  Daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) is recalling certain 2006-2020 freightliner columbia, 2006-2021 freightliner business class m2, 2007-2020 freightliner coronado, 2014-2021 freightliner 122 sd, 2007 sterling a 9500, 2006 freightliner argosy, 2006-2007 sterling at9500, 2008-2021 freightliner cascadia, 2006-2008 freightliner classic, 2006-2011 freightliner century class, 2006-2010 freightliner fld, and 2017 western star 5700 vehicles. The rear reflective tape may be partially covered by the mudflap hanger bracket, which may reduce the vehicle's visibility to other drivers on the road. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

These vehicles are equipped with kidde plastic-handle or push button 'pindicator' fire extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. The pump to rail high pressure fuel line support system used on these engines is sensitive to assembly torque and may be damaged during service work. As a result of other repairs, the line supports may loosen, potentially leading to fuel line cracking and a fuel leak.

  Daimler trucks is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 freightliner cascadia, columbia, century, coronado, and classic xl trucks manufactured from november 1, 2004, through june 15, 2010 for the rack and pinion steering system. The lower pinion bearing may corrode and fail. A failed bearing may lead to damage of the spool valve seals. A damage spool valve seal may allow hydraulic fluid to flow to the right or left turn port instead of flowing to the return port.

If no corrosion is found, on the bearing, the bearing will be packed with grease and the rubber bellows will be replaced with sealant added between the bellows and the rack housing. Under certain road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may adversely affect the slip angle calculation of the electronic stability control (esc) system. This might cause the esc to perceive an over steering situation and therefore apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived to be stable.

  Issue: on certain trucks equipped with "fleet engineer" mud flaps, the bracket for the mud flaps may partially cover the rear reflective tape. Canadian regulations require that reflective tape must be visible on the rear of the truck. Safety risk: reflective tape that is covered may make the truck less visible to others and could create an increased risk of a crash.   On certain vehicles water intrusion could occur, and corrode and damage inside of the signal-detect and activation module (sam) chassis. This corrosion could cause electrical shorts or intermittent operation of trailer tail lamps, trailer stop lamps, trailer side marker lamps and trailer lighting. Failure of the stop lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Also, under certain conditions, an electrical short in the chassis sam could also cause melting in the sam or other electrical components, which could result in a vehicle fire. Correction: dealers will inspect the signal-detect and activation module (sam) chassis for evidence of corrosion and proper drip loop wire routing, and sam chassis damaged by corrosion will be replaced. A drip shield will be mounted inside the cab over the sam chassis if not previously installed.

  On certain trucks equipped with a detroit diesel dd13, dd15 or dd16 engine, the support system for the high pressure fuel line (between the fuel pump and the fuel delivery rail) may be damaged during a service repair procedure. Incorrect torque applied to the dampener "p" clip fasteners may damage the fasteners, which could allow the clips to loosen. This could result in a cracked fuel line and a diesel fuel leak. Diesel fuel leakage may ignite on a hot engine surface and cause a fire. As well, diesel fuel spilt on the roadway could endanger other road users by making the roadway unexpectedly slippery. These issues could result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the high pressure fuel line and install a more robust fuel line support system.

  On certain trucks equipped with a rack & pinion steering system, the lower pinion bearing may corrode and fail. As a result, the vehicle may require additional steering input while driving in a straight line. This could also cause a loss of steering power assist. These issues could ultimately result in property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect the rack and pinion gear assembly. If it passes the inspection, new bellows will be installed and grease added to the bottom pinion bearing. A steering gear that fails the inspection will be replaced.

• Sam cab water intrusion investigation # RQ20001

  On january 9, 2009, daimler trucks north america (dtna) issued recall 09v-024 on model year (my) 2007-2009 cascadia trucks for water intrusion into the signal-detect and activation (sam) chassis and cab modules resulting in potential electrical shorts that can affect lamp and lighting (tail, stop, side-marker lamps, trailer lighting) functions and possibly result in a fire hazard inside the trucks cabin. Both modules have direct 12-volt power via the powernet distribution box (pndb). The recall remedy involves installing a new plastic drip shield between the sam cab module and the bulkhead, to prevent water intrusion from reaching the module.During the review of customer complaints (voq) and field reports (submitted by dtna through early warning reporting) related to sam cab electrical failures, the office of defects investigation (odi) found multiple reports and four (4) voq on model year 2007-present trucks alleging electrical failures and thermal events related to water intrusion affecting the sam cab module. Some reports described repeated electrical failures, including fires with the ignition on or off. Numerous reports indicate water had entered the cab through the windshield seals. Two complainants alleged multiple repairs of the windshield seal did not prevent water intrusion into the sam cab module.In july 2019, dtna issued a technical service bulletin (tsb) 54-312 instructing technicians to replace the drip shield and the secondary cover on the sam cab module with a new one-piece drip shield.Dtna claims the replacement was a product enhancement and would be a good modification when replacing any sam cab module. Upon review of the tsb, odi became concerned the new replacement shield was intended to correct a problem with the shield installed as a remedy for recall 09v-024 and all new production trucks since the recall was announced. • Air brake reservoir bracket fracture investigation # PE12018

  The office of defects investigation (odi) received early warning reporting (ewr) data from the manufacturer that indicated some number of subject vehicles had allegedly experienced a fracture of one or more support brackets resulting in an unsecured air brake reservoir.This could result in a loss of air pressure necessary for proper service brake application and a potential road hazard if the reservoir separates from the vehicle in operation.By letter dated august 15, 2012, daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) has notified odi that it has initiated a safety recall (identified by nthsa recall no. 12v-405 and dtna recall no. Fl-631) to address a safety defect in approximately 1,663 model year (my) 2009 through 2012 freightliner 114sd, business class m2, cascadia, coronado, sterling 9500 and western star 4700 trucks manufactured from july 7, 2008 through december 15, 2011, originally equipped with a specific perpendicular oriented air brake reservoir support bracket (p/n 12-22981-000).To date odi is unaware of any bracket failures that resulted in a complete separation of the reservoir from the vehicle.Affected owners will be notified by dtna beginning october 15, 2012 and affected vehicles will have the subject air brake reservoir support brackets replaced with a more robust bracket.Repairs will be performed by dtna authorized service facilities.Copies of dtnas reimbursement plan for pre-notification remedies will be submitted to odi as a supplemental report when available.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.

On 06/26/2018 i was driving in chicago on south western ave it was raininig that night i pulled over because my 2012 cascadia was asking for a regen of the def system .. I pulled over in a safe area and started the regen process. About 10 min in to the regen process on the lower driver side dash area heavy smoke and the smell of burning wire was noticed a fire broke out at the fuse box located on the lower driver side it was determined by insurance company that these 2012 cascadias are known for leaks in the cab area causing the moisture or water to leak in and interact or make contact with fuse box area causing a fire ...

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 freightliner cascadia. Upon starting the vehicle, the steering wheel was unable to be turned to the left or right and there was power steering fluid on the pavement. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that the vehicle had been previously repaired four times for the same failure by the same independent mechanic. A freightliner dealer was not contacted for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000,000.

The dealer diagnosed that water penetrated through the windshield and caused the samcap module to fail. The module was not replaced. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 4,081.

The vehicle was merged to the side of the road, where the vehicle was turned off and restarted. The contact stated that when the vehicle was restarted all of the warning lights went away, but after driving for several minutes the warning lights became illuminated again. The vehicle was taken for diagnostic testing. The contact was informed that the signal detection and activation module had malfunctioned due to water getting into contact with the electrical components. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v127000 (electrical system). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 600,000.
