2017 CHEVROLET CAMARO with 27280 miles

Steering wheel torque sensor failed open causing loss of power steering. Error code C0545. There is an active gm factory recall for power steering failure, recall number: n182182760 and nhtsa campaign number: 19v086000. Unfortunately, my vin was not part of that recall. Power steering failure occurred at 27,280 miles on vehicle. My vehicle is a 2017 chevy Camaro ss convertible. The failure occurred while sitting at a stop light on naval station norfolk in norfolk va. A message flashed on the console reading service power steering, drive with care. At that point steering the car at low speed required significant amount of force to turn the steering wheel. Fortunately, the failure did not occur while the car was in motion or on an on/off ramp or in traffic as it could have caused an accident.

My power steering stopped working while driving around a curve at approximately 35 mph. Fortunately, i was able to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road and stop by applying significant physical force to the steering wheel. The instrument panel displayed two warnings. The first indicated the power steering system required service and the second indicated the traction control system required service. I then turned the ignition off and then restarted the vehicle. The power steering and traction control warnings were no longer present and the power steering was again functional. I then contacted the dealer and arranged for them to diagnose the problems the following morning. Their service record indicated a code C0545 (steering torque sensor corrupt) had been logged. They cleared the error code and indicated they could not find anything else wrong. The service record also stated that "if the issue reoccurs, advised on steering gear $1800.00". I picked up the vehicle that afternoon and once again experienced the same issue at approximately 65 mph while on the way home. As before, i pulled off to the side of road, turned off the ignition, restarted the vehicle and drove the rest of the way home without further incident.

While driving the vehicle has lost power steering assist and stabilitrak intermittently on multiple occasions. Alerts flash on the screen and warning lights illuminate and ofcourse the steering will jerk back from a turn (if you're actively in one). Fortunately, i have taken photos in the past and actually had it occur on my way to an oil change today. They checked the code it comes back to "C0545" which can be found on gm bulletin "pit5437b" that identifies this problem back in september 2015. The cherolet service technician who diagnosed this on my vehicle informed my service department adviser that the vehicle is not safe with the problem, which of course was relayed back to me. So, if a problem chevy identified in 9/15 makes a vehicle unsafe to operate, why does Chevrolet want me to pay $1700 + tax instead of including my vehicle in the recall that addressed the same issue (nhtsa campaign number: 16v054000)?

When in motion the trucks power steering stops working at random speeds making the vehicle difficult to steer. Took the vehicle to a gm dealer for diagnostic and repair. The technician explained that the code dtc-C0545 steering wheel torque sensor is faulty. Cost of repair $2100.00 i asked for the faulty parts and was informed i would need to pay for them as the dealer is required to send them back to gm because they are faulty. The vehicle has about 52,000 miles on it. This power steering failure would make it difficult to manage the vehicle at lower speeds therefore making the vehicle unsafe. The dealer/technician very strongly recommended the repair because the vehicle is unsafe to drive without this repair.

My 2015 Gmc Canyon lost power steering traveling approximately 50mph on a mountain road on one of the first rainy days of the season. It felt like losing more than just steering assistance, as even at that rate of speed the wheel was nearly impossible to turn. I was lucky to be on one of the limited sections of straight road. Rebooting the vehicle returned steering functionality. Dealer found code "C0545 - steering torque sensor" and performed safety recall #15595 where they replaced the torque sensor cover. I was charged $200 for the repair despite the recall notice explicitly stating it should be performed free of charge. I have not experienced loss of power steering in the month since the repair. I contacted the gm regional rep, who stated that cars can have the same problem as a safety recall, and the same solution as a safety recall, but not be part of the safety recall. That was the justification for the $200 charge and the denial of reimbursement. Gm further stated that they don't determine the criteria for a safety recall, it is all up to the nhtsa. In other words, they won't do the right thing unless the government forces them to. In my opinion as an engineer, sensor + rain sounds like a plausible match for the symptoms and the problem identified by the safety recall that the dealer performed. I question whether the recall is missing some vin numbers, or if a very similar but independent problem exists on the same components, warranting a separate recall.

2/28/15 twitch in steering at 55 mph. (5 twitch/8 mi.) had been snowy with subzero temps, and suspected ice in steering linkage. Following day exhibited same twitches, but fewer. Backing out of parking space when steering became very difficult. Messages on driver information: power steering failure, esc requires service, and a yellow triangle with wavy marks was illuminated. Drove 2.25 mi to relative's home. Turned car off & restarted; power steering worked again. Next day checked fuse connections on passenger side of console, and under hood near battery. 80a power steering fuse was loose on one side. Nuts securely tightened, but rivets on fuse body were loose; lug could be moved approx 1/32". Replaced fuse, and worked better. Then noticed that twitching had returned; was prevalent with vehicle stopped and running. On wed drove vehicle to pickup lunch,; steering wheel was twitching with car in park and engine running. Used remote start system to let engine run as it was near 0 f and had only driven 3 mi. Returned to car within 10 min remote start run time, inserted key; power steering didn't work & same messages displayed. Stopped & restarted car; power steering didn't work. Arranged for repair, and drove car to shop later that afternoon; power steering worked, but lots of twitching. Steering column replaced due to steering wheel torque sensor code C0545. Power steering failed and fought me as evidenced by uneven jerky turning force. System allowed steering wheel to run about 1/8 turn, and then dampened turning. Have a sore right shoulder. Force required to steer without power steering is inexcusable. System does not disengage when it fails, and intermittently interacts while display indicates it's out of commission. System is inherently dangerous due to function during failure.

While driving downhill at approximately 50 mph, the power steering warning indicator went off and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn, shorty followed by the electronic stability control warning indicator. I pulled off on the shoulder of the road and turned the engine off and restarted the engine, and the power steering worked again, but the same thing happened once more on my 35 mile commute to work. On the way home, however, the power steering would only work for about 15 seconds each time i turned the engine off and back on. Now both the power steering and esc dont work at all. I took the vehicle to the gm dealer where i live, and was informed that the car was displaying error code C0545, indicating that the steering shaft torque sensor, the torque position sensor in the steering, needs replacement, and that there is a recall out on other years of Pontiac G6's for the same problem, but 2010 was left off the recall. No word yet on whether gm is going to own up to their problem and take care of it, but after reading all the other complaints on here related to the same problem, i am not too optimistic. It is unbelievable that gm can manufacture and sell vehicles with problems like this. It's a wonder that there was not an accident involved when this happened, the vehicle is completely unsafe to drive. *js

When i started the engine on my 2010 Chevrolet Malibu, the information center displayed the message "power steering" and service esc" and when trying to drive the car, it was extremely difficult to steer. After driving about 200 feet in a parking lot, i realized steering was too difficult and driving the car was unsafe. I turned off the ignition and restarted the engine, and luckily the problem temporarily went away. However, i had this problem reoccur again over 20 times between 2/2014 to 4/2014. For my own safety and fear that the issue could worsen and appear at any time while driving, i proactively took the car into my local Chevrolet dealer, where they diagnosed and fixed the problem. Here is their diagnosis and fix: cause code: C0545 torque sensor corrective action: replaced steering column i have also opened a case# with general motors/Chevrolet customer assistance and repeatedly contacted them about the issue because i feel it is the same symptoms and resolution as outlined in the recent 31mar2014 (electric) power steering recall found at the following link: [ http://media.Gm.Com/media/us/en/gm/news.Detail.Html/content/pages/news/us/en/2014/mar/0331-power-steering.Html ]. Chevrolet customer assistance, however, indicated that my vin number/vehicle is not covered under the recall and will not reimburse me for the repair. I am contacting the nhtsa to inform them that vehicles not listed under the above recall, namely the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu, potentially have the same problem/safety issue and require the same repair. I hope that the nhtsa encourages general motors to reassess the vehicles covered under the current recall and extend the recall to also include the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu model year. *js

2009 Saturn Aura xe, approximately 124,400 miles. When i started the car, the dic power steering light was on. I was unable to turn the steering wheel at all. I got a ride home from work. The next day, a friend changed the power steering fuse. The indicator light went out and i was able to drive the car home. This didn't fix the problem, though. I had to have it towed to a repair shop when it went out for good. Code: C0545-steering wheel toggle sensor. They blamed the power steering issue on having the battery replaced. They did some resetting of codes and did a relearn. They said there were no recalls posted. My son picked up the car 3 days later, was able to drive 5 miles before the steering froze up again. He was strong enough to be able to turn the steering wheel and get the car back to the shop. They determined the problem was with the steering column and the entire thing had to be replaced, stating there were no serviceable parts. After another week, i picked up my car. This entire event cost me $1300+ in repairs and rental car fees. If gm had posted a recall sooner, they would have fixed it right the first time. Now, Saturn is saying my car isn't included in the latest recall for power steering assist and they refuse to reimburse me even though my car had a defective part and could have caused an accident had it gone out while i was driving on the interstate. They say the recall is vin specific and the part in my car wasn't defective. Maybe my car didn't have the previously identified part that failed, but mine still failed, which means the part was defective, too. Gm needs to acknowledge this failure and the potential to harm or kill people. If you own a Saturn Aura and the power steering assist has gone out, report it here, write to gm, post it on Saturn's and gm's facebook pages, write to your local newspapers. Make some noise & make gm take responsibility.

On sunday, november 3, 2013, the warning light came on warning me that we had no power steering for the first time. On monday, november 4, 2013, we again received the message that we had no power steering. And we did not have power steering. You had to turn the ignition off and restart numerous times for the warning light not to come on. On tuesday, november 5, 2013, my intent was to make an appointment to have the Malibu checked out, when my wife called on her way to work and said that she had trouble starting the Malibu without the power steering warning, that something was wrong with the steering as she was driving, and we should exchange vehicles at a local repair shop. They looked at the error code (dtc C0545), printed me a copy of the technical bulletin (09-02-36-001), and recommended that i take the Malibu to a dealer. It took five starts before the Malibu would start on their parking lot before the power steering warning went off. As i drove to the dealer the car was drivable, but there was definitely something wrong with the steering. When i arrived at the dealer, i placed the transmission in park and set the emergency brake; when i took my hands off the steering wheel to turn off the ignition, the steering wheel was going left and right on its own ? I can?T emphasize this enough. I have never witnessed (or have even heard of) a car?S steering wheel performing in this manner before. In addressing the situation with the technician writing up my problem, we discussed payment and warranty and he said he would call gm and call me back. He called me back later and said that gm would pay half the repair and that my cost eventually worked out to $497.66.

Thankfully i was able to pull off to the side of the road and shut the car off. When i restarted the car the steering was normal for about 15 miles then it cut out again. I had my ex husband who is a certified toyota technician check the car. He found a code for the steering C0545. This code and problem is a common problem with this car line as general motors issued a safety recall (recall 14116b) also your organization issued a safety campaign ( ntsa campaign # 14v153000) when this was discovered we called keller Chevrolet in buffalo ny to have them double check the issue and payed their diagnostic fee, they concurred with my ex husbands diagnosis and ran the vin for coverage under the recalls for this failure they advised us our car is not covered under these safety recalls and we would have to pay over $1000.00 to have it repaired. Now i would like to know who would be responsible if god forbid we lost control of the car when this failure occurred and someone was injured or killed? How is it that the same year make and model car can be covered for this failure and our car that has the same symptoms and failure is not? Is it asking to much for gm to fix a known safety defect? Around march 2013, i first began to encounter problems with my power steering. It began at a low speed with a chime, a message display saying to check the power steering, and my wheel locking up (power steering fail). At the time, i did not think much of it because after restarting the car, the power steering seemed fine. After this incident, there were many times when the chime would sound and the message would flash but the power steering still seemed to work. I took my car in for other issues and had this checked out at the same time. The trouble code in the system was C0545 for torque sensor input failure. My mechanic explained that this was a common problem and even checked for a recall at that time. I left with my car that day due to having to wait for parts. Two days later while driving 45mph, the power steering entirely failed. It felt as if my wheel locked entirely. Luckily there were not many cars on the road and i was able to direct it into a parking lot. My car was taken back in immediately and they had to replace the entire steering column. This repair cost around $500. In july 2014, it was brought to my attention that gm finally issued a recall for this problem. So, i called gm to to submit my information to be reimbursed. I was told that only some 2006 Malibus were being recalled for this issue and that my 2006 Malibu was not one of them...Even though my 2006 Malibu had the problem they were recalling for! Come to find out, this has happened to many other 2006 Malibu owners. Needless to say, gm has done a terrible job correcting a serious mistake. *js

My car had a power steering failure on november 17, 2006. My wife had picked up the car from the dealership, and while attempting to pull out of a parking lot, the steering locked. When she let go of the steering wheel, the wheel turned left to the stop without outside input. She was able to get the car back to a parking lot, and the car was towed back to the dealership and a steering gear replaced. On 11/28/2006, my wife picked up the car, and on the way home, the steering locked while she was driving. She drove off the road, hit a curb and scraped a telephone pole, rendering the car undriveable. Gm sent a technician to assess the problem, and determined that there was no failure of the power steering, despite the first hand information supplied by both my wife, and the tow driver stating that the power steering was locked and the wheel would not turn. phone interview update (march 12, 2007): dealer thought the steering pull was caused by the rack and pinion unit and replaced it. The steering lock-up afterward and the vehicle crashed. Dealer service manager found fault code C0545 from the computer. Gm issued a tsb to address that fault code.

The power steering would stop working periodically, most often upon starting of the car but it failed while driving on the interstate one time. The mechanic read it as a C0545 code, steering wheel torque input sensor. The dealership stated the steering column needed to be replaced. This issue is well know, and it appears some vehicles with the same make and model and year were covered under a recall, but my particular one does not seem to be.

Issues that arose with my 2004 Malibu july 7, 2004. These issues are still worrisome to me even though the problem has been addressed by the fort wayne kelley Chevrolet service people. Ea04018_cat. *ak i encountered several dangerous issues with the automobile. The first issue occurred at a stop sign. I was completely stopped at the stop sign when my steering wheel started to pulsate uncontrollably. Upon acceleration it seemed to subside until i tried to turn left and at that time i had no control over my steering. I was able to get into the correct lane finally and thankfully i was only 1 mile from my home. As i turned into my neighborhood the steering once again began to pulsate leaving me without steering power and i had to break upon someones yard in order not to hit a child playing in the street. This is a huge concern. I immediately called kelley Chevrolet. We were addressed courteously yet i was still very anxious about what had happened&especially considering my daughter had a Malibu just like ours. I have a granddaughter who rides in that car and i was very nervous about the fact that this may also happen to my daughter. Kelley did address the problem promptly and gave us information concerning document id# 1521111 2004 Chevrolet Malibu service information ( noisy steering column, lack of power steering assist, dtcs C0460 and C0545, steering wheel moves slightly by itself #04-02-35-009-may 24, 2004) my steering wheel was not just noisy, it was pulsating to the point i could hardly hold it. Also the issue of the steering wheel moves slightly by itself is also a huge understatement. My steering wheel could be moved by me, however, my wheels did not turn in the direction of my steering. This is something gm must address. Kelleys took care of the problem but i am extremely apprehensive about my car or ever getting another Chevrolet with electronic steering. Ea04018_cat

Upon trying to start car immediately had "wrench" sign on the left of the steering wheel with a message above the radio stating power steering needed to be looked at immediately, however, later that night indicated was working so drove the next week or so,. Took into dealer on september 28 who ran diagnostics on it and found code C0545 but could not duplicate the problem. They did indicate that it was common to the 2004 model. On saturday october 1, 2011 it repeatedly exhibited the same problem so have not driven it since. On thursday, october 6, 2011 we did have to move it for lawn care purposes. It started fine and did not show the problem however, after reading other comments on-line where it indicated power steering had gone out while driving have not been driving it until more can be found out. It seems to me that this is something gm/Chevrolet needs to correct. Should we have corrected and they were to later come out with a recall would we be reimbursed?
