P0176

Fuel Composition Sensor Circuit Malfunction

DTC P0176, sometimes indicated as P017600 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the air/fuel mixture causing fuel composition sensor circuit malfunction.

The fuel composition sensor (FCS) is used to determine the percentage of ethanol in fuel. When the FCS fails, the ECU may not be able to correctly determine the fuel composition, which can cause the engine to run rough or stall.
The most common cause of a P0176 code is a failed fuel composition sensor. Other causes can include a failed wiring harness, a failed ECU, or a failed fuel pump.
If the code is caused by a failed fuel composition sensor, the most common solution is to replace the sensor. If the wiring harness is at fault, the harness should be replaced. If the ECU is at fault, the ECU should be replaced. If the fuel pump is at fault, the fuel pump should be replaced.
