• Recall 249005 [USA]: Loose or broken vanos unit bolts can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain 2010-2012 1 series coupe, 1 series convertible, 3 series sedan, 3 series convertible, 2010-2011 3 series sportswagon, 3 series coupe, 5 series sedan, x3 xdrive 28i, x3 xdrive 30i, x5 xdrive30i, and z4 sdrive30i vehicles. The aluminum bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (vanos) unit can loosen over time and possibly break.
  dealers will replace the four vanos bolts, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed december 18, 2023. Second letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. Owners may contact bmw customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

• Recall 93254 [USA]: This condition could cause the fan motor to become inoperative, or cause the motor circuit board in the assembly to overheat, potentially leading to a fire in the engine compartment.
  This recall involves aftermarket parts sold by valeo. Valeo is recalling certain engine cooling fans, part numbers 696121, 696273, and 696275, used as service replacement parts for model year 2008-2011 bmw 1-series, 2006-2011 bmw 3-series, 2000-2009 bmw 5-series, 2004-2005 bmw 6-series, and 2006-2007 bmw 7-series vehicles. A metal-oxide semiconductor may overheat due to insufficient screwing of the semiconductor on the aluminum heat sink. This primary failure could cause adjacent components on the fan assembly motor circuit board to overheat and short.

  The positive battery cable to the front distribution box behind the glove box can become damaged by vibrations and frictional corrosion. This may cause a loss of electrical connection to the distributions box. Symptoms include being unable to gain entry or start the car but the most common are a flickering instrument panel or uneven engine performance. However if the electrical connection is completely lost this will also affect the operation of the vehicles lighting systems; e.G. Sidelights or hazard warning lamps.

• Recall R/2014/068 [UK]: Engine emergency mode may be activated during driving
  The screws retaining the variable camshaft timing (vanos) housing may loosen and under certain circumstances the heads may break off. This can lead to the vanos leaking oil internally and adversely affect the valve timing adjustment. If found to deviating from targeted data the engine emergency mode will be activated. This will be indicated by a distinct change in engine running. The orange engine management warning lamp and a check message; on vehicles with n51/n52 engines this will appear at ignition recycle on n55 engine it will display immediately.

  It is possible that the connection between the b+ cable and the power distribution box can become damaged by wear and heat which is caused by high current flow and high contact resistance. Normally this will result in a non-start situation after parking the vehicle. However it is possible that this could in extreme cases occur whilst the vehicle is in motion. The driver should be made aware of the issue by flickering of the instrument cluster (dash) or an engine mis-fire; but if the driver does not then the engine could cut-out without warning.

  Issue: on certain vehicles, the connector for the blower motor regulator may corrode. If this happens, the wiring could overheat and melt. Potential warnings include a blower motor that does not work, a burning smell, or smoke in the cabin. Safety risk: wiring that overheats could create a risk of a fire. Corrective actions: bmw will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the blower regulator wiring harness. Other components will be inspected for damage, and replaced as necessary.

If this occurs, the surrounding plastics could overheat, melt and potentially cause a fire, which could increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will replace the pcv valve heater.

  On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will replace the front driver air bag inflator or air bag module, depending on the vehicle model.

  On certain vehicles, housing bolts for the variable camshaft timing system could break, allowing camshaft timing to deviate. If this occurs, the engine would revert to "limp home mode", limiting available engine power. In rare instances the engine could stall, increasing the risk of a collision causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will replace housing bolts that break and perform associated repairs for 10 years/unlimited mileage from the vehicle's in-service date. Note: this applies only to vehicles not covered by recall 2014-127.

  On certain vehicles, the sound insulation in the "b" pillar (around the seatbelt pre-tensioner) may ignite during a crash severe enough to deploy the pre-tensioner.   Issue: on certain vehicles equipped with an n52 or n52k 6-cylinder engine, a manufacturing problem could cause the pcv valve heater (blow-by heater) to short circuit and overheat. Note: this replaces transport canada recalls 2017-470 and 2019-170. Only vehicles equipped with an n52 or n52k engine require this repair. Safety risk: an overheated engine pcv valve heater could create the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective actions: bmw will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development. Bmw recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors, until the recall repairs have been completed.

• Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation # EA21002

  From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). I received a letter from bmw advising that parts are available and to contact my local dealer to have them installed. I have contacted my dealer and they said that due to limited availability of parts, i could not have them installed until march 2018.

Failed passenger seat occupancy sensor. Does not detect passenger. "airbag off" is illuminated when passenger is present.

My wife was driving her car on the free way at night by her self and it went from 65 miles to hour to 25 miles an hour and then it stopped. I had to have the vehicle towed to my home and my wife was very scared. I then had the car towed to mag bmw in dublin ohio. Once there i was told that it had a gas leak in the inside of the fuel tank that is causing the car to loose power and that is why it stopped. I was told by the service person that it would cost me $3000 to get it repaired. I was also told that bmw does not use that fuel tank anymore so i would have to replace the fuel pump also. I asked if you no longer use the fuel tank it must be something wrong with it and then bmw should be responsible. I was told that was not the case and that i was responsible. As you can see this could have turned out very bad if my wife would have been in heavy traffic going 65 miles per hour and then just starts to slow down with no notice or no issue. The car is still in my garage with no work been done just incase some one needs to look at the car. I did have to pay $400 dollars to be told about the gas tank problem. The car has 40,000 miles on it.

The tail lights and 3rd brake light fail. There is no indicator on dash that notifies of such failure, creates a very dangerous situation. *tr

Radio not always going on when turned on or turning off by itself or changing stations. Ongoing problem. Brought to dealer who had me wait for over 5 hrs. For the "controller" to be changed. Problem continued along with one occasion of loud buzzing coming from rear of vehicle. Brought to attention of dealer several times when in for servicing but was told there was no problem. Discovered only too late that i was beyond the time of filing a complaint under the lemon law. Brought vehicle it to dealer for appraisal and possible "buy back" but was offered only about half its value. Now i am encountering problem of "service engine soon" light going on and remaining on (over several thousand mi.), paid to have checked but received code only. Tired of going around in circles with this car and company so am now considering trading with another company. *tr
