Vehicle description: bi-fuel vehicles modified to run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (cng). The natural gas fuel tanks have a solenoid shut-off valve that stops fuel flow from the fuel tank in the event of certain moderate to severe collisions. If the vehicle is in a collision and the natural gas fuel line is damaged, the system could leak natural gas.
ford has requested owners of these vehicles to have the cng fuel system disabled under a previous recall campaign and to only use gasoline fuel until a permanent corrective action is developed. Owners are being alerted to this solenoid valve concern at this time. The timing of corrective actions is being delayed to allow both conditions to be remedied at one time. In the meantime, there is not risk as long as the natural gas system has been disabled and the vheicle is only operated on gasoline.
owner notification began february 9, 1998.Owners will be notified when service kits are available.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 2001195 [Canada]: Powertrain

The wiring harness has deteriorated to where the engine runs lean and dies. The check engine light came on while driving. Once home i checked everything i could until the engine compartment cooled then noticed the wiring on the number 1 cylinder. The more i looked i could see all the injector plugs were deteriorated badly with number 4 being worse. Just touching the harness causes the insulation to flake off and bare wires to be exposed. I purchased a code reader to allow proper indications of what codes were indicated when the check engine light illuminated. Now ford wants me to take the vehicle to a dealer so they can charge me and tell me what i already know and can plainly see! *tr

I have 1997 ford contour se. I have had several problems with it, check engine light comes on constantly, radiator light comes on constantly, runs poorly. I had all checked when they happen on multilple occasions. After doing some research on the internet, i found that there may be a problem with the wiring harness in the engine compartment. I was told by a freind that he had heard of a problem like this and ford was fixing them, and i should call the dealer. I called the dealer and they confirmed there was a recall but based on my vin i was not included due to the age of my car. This was done at brandon ford around the july/august time frame. Thinking that i had to do the repair myself, due to the cost at the dealership (over $3000.00), i started looking for parts myself on the internet. There i found the recall/ext. Warranty info. 99m03 and in this it states 10 years or 100,000 mile. I again got hope that maybe they had missread the recall at the dealer ship. I then returned with vin and the info 99m03 in had and one of their service advisers confirmed that it should be covered. I then made an appointment for the next day to drop the car off at 8:30am to have it done. I call that same day at 2:30pm to check to see if and for how long i wounld need a rental car. I was told at that time that my car was not covered due to it's age and that it ran out on 10/26/06. Had the first person looked the info. Up properly back in the july/august time frame it would have been fixed. I was also told by the service manager that the repair would take them approx. 3 days to do, and for only gives them 6-7 hrs to do it, so they lose money to do these repairs. Based on the 99m03 info i should have recieved a letter stating the ext. Warranty which i did not, but had recieved other recall info. *nm

22 yr. Old son matt crashed his 1997 ford contour into utility pole-feels bearings caused him to lose control of steering. Inner windshield driver's side post at corner came apart, plastic on interior-which stopped at top of post and wasn't connected to anything on inside of roof-popped out and lacerated his left eyeball. The eyeball interior was protruding and surgery was necessary to stitch the eyeball back together. He will eventually need a cornea transplant to get decent vision from that eye. The right eye sustained blunt trauma which caused a hematoma to develop which caused blindness until it's recent removal. Restoration of eyesight in the right eye is a slow progress.*ak

Cd4e transmission in 1998 ford contour gl (same complaint as the c4de in the mazda 626). Transmission needed to be rebuilt due to the tss sensor breaking and falling inside the transmission - which stopped the pump and caused vehicle to become inoperable. The sensor is in the driver's side fenderwell, where it is exposed to road hazards and environmental conditions. Not a good design. Furthermore, the repair costs $3000 for a new transmission and all this happened because ford put the sensor in a position where it can break and cause significant damage. It's a lousy design. The sensor should be somewhere under the hood - not in the fenderwell. *la

In october 2001 (at 67000 miles), coolant was leaking from the water pump on my 1997 2.5-liter v6 ford contour. Water pump was replaced. On june 2002 (at 73000 miles), the water pump started leaking again. Water pump was replaced again. On december 2002 (at 80000 miles), the same thing happened again, i.E. The pump was leaking. Water pump was replaced. On april 2003 (at 85000 miles), the water pump again began to leak from around the same spot (per the service technician). Water pump was replaced. With this latest occurrence the ford dealership technician (@ century ford in rockville, md) called ford hotline with the history of the problems. The hot line called back later and informed the technician that they had discovered that the fiber material from inside the radiator hose was shredding, with the end result being that the particles would flow into the water pump and ruin the seals, thus necessitating changing the water pump. No ford technical bulletin exists on defective radiator hose. At no time did dealership recommend that radiator hose be replaced because it was defective or because it looked worn out. *jb

This automobile is giving off a horrific burning smell anytime that the heater is turned on. No one at the ford motor company wants to take responsibility for any of the defects with their products. I would just like to say that, that is beyond poor customer service on the part of ford. I would also like to let it be known that this is not the only major.*ak manufacture defect with this vehicle that i have found. The entire front-end suspension of this vehicle needs to be recalled. I less that 1 week ago replaced front wheel bearings because of a loud rubbing, roaring noise and they are starting to make the same unbearable noise again. You, at ford, advised me that there were no other complaints for this type of problem. Well i would like to make you all aware that there are. If you would take the time to look through your complaints under anything having to deal with the tires, front-end suspension, wheels, wheel bearings or bearings themselves i am certain that you will find additional complaints. When your poor unfortunate and miseducated customers call with their comments concerns and issues, they are asked what is their concern. They, not knowing what the problems are state what it is they hear while driving the death trap they have been sold or have been told by your dealers. Leaving every thing too broad and wide open to be scattered and incorrectly categorized. Which works out to your benefit. As i understand it, anytime ford has a recall or admits that they have a problem with a vehicle they are fined and has to pay several penalties. Well i should think that ford would want to pay the paucity of fees and penalties now and make the repairs needed rather than have another firestone tire incident on the hands and conscience. But who knows maybe you all dont care.

We had this vehicle for 3 yrs and during those years we have come across a number of problems with it.After the first few months of purchase the vehicle was unable to shift into the proper gear, it would get stuck on park and we were unable a drive it a number of times. We then problems with the tires in which one of the front tire split , we then replace all four. We then had problems with the heater and front lights. After seeing all the negative reports others have given on this particurlar vehicle online we feel this is a very unsafe vehicle to drive. We have major concerns as to whether we should even put this vehicle on the road without having an investigation done.We took the vehicle to the dealer and we couldn't believe their attitude, they showed no concern to our problem and proceeded to give us a quote for 2200. To get a new transmission. When we asked if there were any recalls on this vehicle they stated no. We then saw a recall on the transmission online, so we contacted ford customer svc in which they then said that our vin number wasn't included on this recall. We explained that we were having the same problems this recall stated. They in turn called the manager at crowell's who stated that he didn't offer any discount because of our attitudes. He then offer to charge 495.For a new transmission plus 200.For any service charge, also a 28. Per day rental. When we asked why he lowered his price so drastically they stated that if the work was over 2200. That was the amount of the discount(1500.) however, she also stated that if our vehicle was over 75,000 miles it did not apply to us. So we are left with no vehicle to drive no way of paying this amount of money and to our surprise a vehicle with so many recalls it shouldn't to be allow on the road.I feel we should get our money back being that this vehicle is too unsafe for my family to be in.*ak

Compressor "froze-up" which locked up the engine and would not run. The dealer that i took my car to, said that they had had other contours with the same problem. I was fortunate that i was stopped, at my sister's house and not on the road. I had just travelled 130 miles, when the car cratered. My problem with this is that if ford knew the design would render the engine useless, it would be a design problem. There's no way to by-pass the compressor as it is on a pulley system with one serpentine belt for everything. My bill for repairs is in excess of $800.00, of which the compressor is over $500.00. The dealer stated that the rack and pinion component would have to be replaced. Then they changed their mind ford told dealer not to change the unit. Stated that ford was working on a fix for problem. May take up to six months. I had a lawyer write a letter to ford asking for a buy back. They refused and stated that the noise was "normal." well, which is it? A noise that a dealer was going to replace the unit to fix, that the ford engineering is suposedly working on, or a normal noise? My wife is scared to drive vehicle says the noise is getting worse. I thought steering system is a safety sensitive system. *ak

While slowing to turn, vehicle was struck from behind, other vehicle was moving from 35-40 mph. At impact, driver seatbelt came unlatched, causing driver to slide forward, hitting knee on dashboard hard enough to dislodge radio. After main repairs, vehicle was taken to martin ford sales, union grove, wi. Their inspection found a small piece of plastic or cellophane, no more than an 1/8" thick and 1/2" long. After being unable to duplicate the problem with panic stops, they said the debris 'might have caused the concern'. They would not replace the seatbelt or look into it further. We do not feel that the small piece of cellophane could have caused the problem, nor do we feel that panic stops duplicate a rear-end collison.

Hi, we have had so many problems i can't believe that ford dosen't recall the 97 contours. We only had the car 1 month and the e.G.R valve to the exhaust manifold was replaced. The p.C. Valve has been serviced 4 times. The egr pressure feedback /back pressure was replaced. The rotor on the brakes was cracked and had to be replaced. We have had the car in the shop a total of 58 days.We took the car in 5 times telling them about this burning odor coming from the a/c vents. Recall about wire harness. They said could not verify concern. Untill my husband took it for the 4 time when the car was full of this foggy smoke. He made a service advisior come out and look at the car full of smoke. For three months 10-9-99 untill present .We have had to endure headaches vomiting and loss of our voices because they said they could not verify concern. We now have pictures of neglect of the safety of my husband and 5 children. The burned melted parts they should have replaced back on 10-9-99 it took untill 1-22-00 and as of right now 2- 10-00 another dealership has had the car for 7 day's. Major defects with the 97 contour. We think they sold all there cng cars to people and didn't tell them. I know they sure didn't tell us. 3 times on the oil change paper they mention about the selenoid. You don't have that done with a oil change.Maybe you guy's can check into it? Why else would owners of just the 97 contours have so many problems? Check your t s b pages. Please let us know what we can do we can't trust anyone to fix it right when we were told by ford service people they couldn't find the problem.Something is really wrong with all of these cars.

1. Parking brake seized without warning in wet weather with outside temperatures below freezing, especially when parking brake was left engaged for several hours while car was parked outdoors. Left rear wheel would lock up intermittently, causing difficulty in maintaining control of vehicle and nearly causing two accidents. Also made ascending icy hills from a stop very difficult, as both rear wheels would lock. This sometimes caused the vehicle to slowly roll backward into path of oncoming traffic. 2. Transmission shifted only at very low engine speeds (less than 2500 rpm), causing much slower than normal acceleration, and excess use of brakes when descending long, steep grades. Driving with knowledge of problem allowed me to avoid situations where rapid acceleration or extended periods of brake use were necessary, but problem still reduced margin of safety. Both these problems were eventually repaired under warranty after numerous dealership denials and delays. Dates and mileages of components failures are estimates, and not exact. *ak
