Known Recall Investigations
  • Idle instability investigation as of 20110511

On november 29, 2012, ford motor company (ford) initiated customer satisfaction program 12n03 to extend warranty coverage terms for repair of engine idle rpm surge caused by throttle body deposits in all model year (my) 2005 through 2007 ford freestyle, five hundred and mercury montego vehicles. The program extends the coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle (all vehicles are eligible for the program through may 31, 2013, regardless of mileage).Dealers will repair vehicles exhibiting the condition by removing and cleaning the throttle body and reprogramming the pcm with software containing an updated idle speed control strategy.According to ford, some of the affected vehicles may experience momentary, intermittent engine idle rpm surge (idle flare) when stopped or during low speed driving maneuvers such as in a parking lot or driveway.Unstable idle speed control (dips and flares) around the target engine speed (700 rpm) can occur in vehicles with deposit build-up in the throttle body when the system adjusts engine speed in response to changes in engine load, typically from power steering application or air-conditioner compressor cycling.Idle speed control logic is only active at vehicle speeds below 3.5 mph and when the accelerator pedal is not applied.Ford testing of a vehicle with a "worst case" throttle body measured a maximum idle flare of 1360 rpm lasting approximately 1 second, which ford indicated was consistent with system design to limit vehicle speed and acceleration in idle control mode.Ford indicated that the test vehicle was held in place with normal brake effort and that vehicle speed remained under 4 mph without the brake pedal applied. In addition to throttle body deposit accumulation, symptoms associated with the condition may include check engine lamp illumination and diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) P0505, P0506 or P061B.Ford attributed the surge condition to changes in idle air flow resulting from the progressive buildup of deposits in the throttle body from normal positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) system operation. This condition was not adequately compensated for in the original powertrain control module (pcm) calibration.Ford issued a technical service bulletin on august 15, 2011 (tsb 11-8-5), releasing an updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with cvt transmissions. On october 19, 2011, ford issued a second bulletin (tsb 11-10-21) superseding tsb 11-8-5 and including updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with 6-speed transmissions.Prior to ford issuing the tsb’s, owner’s experiencing the alleged defect either received no repairs, if dealers could not duplicate the condition, or had the throttle body cleaned or replaced, which only provided temporary correction until the throttle deposit build-up returned.Ford’s revised powertrain calibrations appear to be effective remedies for the idle instability caused by build-up of throttle body deposits. However, even after the tsb’s were released, many owners experiencing the condition continued to have difficulty with proper diagnosis and repair as dealers were often either unable to duplicate the condition or were unfamiliar with the new repair procedures.Fords new program addresses those concerns.Nhtsas testing and complaint analysis indicate that the idle speed control issue in the subject vehicles can only occur at very low speeds, are very brief events, are easily controlled by moderate brake pedal forces and result in minor increases in vehicle speed even with no braking. This investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see complete closing resume in the document file for pe11-018.

  • Tire valve cracking investigation as of 20081014

On october 14, 2008, odi opened pe08-060 to investigate allegations of cracked and leaking snap-in tire valves in model year (my) 2007 vehicles manufactured by ford motor company. The valves were supplied to ford by topseal auto-parts, a subsidiary of the shanghai baolong automotive corporation in china.Valves made by topseal for aftermarket sale were the subject of two recent safety recalls by tech international (08t-018) and dill air controls (08t-028), the latter of which was investigated by odi in pe08-036 and ea08-022.The defect conditions addressed by the aftermarket tire valve recalls both involved inadequate resistance to ozone cracking due to issues with the supply of anti-ozonant chemicals to topseal for a period from july to mid-november 2006.The aftermarket valves were compounded with a blend of epdm and natural rubber, using a relatively low percentage of epdm (epdm provides inherent resistance to ozone cracking).Hence, the need for anti-ozonant chemicals and the problems with cracking when those chemicals were missing or out of specification in some lots of valves. Both recall campaigns involved inspection programs to identify and replace valves with visible surface cracking.Although the topseal valves supplied to ford also appear to have been affected by the anti-ozonant supply issues in mid to late-2006, ford indicated that its valves were made at a different topseal production line and were compounded with a higher percentage of epdm rubber to meet more stringent specifications from ford.Odis analysis of complaint and warranty data provided by ford showed that problems with cracked tire valves were significantly higher for my 2007 vehicles produced from december 2006 through march 2007.Ford responded by implementing changes in its material specifications for snap-in rubber tire valves and also increasing the quality and acceptance standards for valves imported for use in its vehicles. While the complaint and warranty claim rates are elevated for subject vehicles produced from december 2006 through march 2007, the rates of leaking valves are well below one percent of production for each of the peak months for all of the affected models.A substantial majority of the subject vehicles are equipped with tire pressure monitoring systems (tpms) which warn the driver when any tire pressures drops below 25 percent of recommended inflation pressure. As outlined in a letter to odi dated april 6, 2009, ford has agreed to send letters to owners of certain my 2007 and 2008 ford, lincoln and mercury vehicles to provide information about the cracking concern. Letters will be sent to owners of vehicles built from november 2006 through may 2007.Owners can opt for a free dealer inspection.Valves exhibiting surface cracks or air leakage related to ozone attack will be replaced by ford under its normal warranty terms.Ford expects to send the letter by approximately mid-may 2009. Based on the use of tpms in the majority of subject vehicles and the relatively low rates of repairs associated with leaking valves and resultant tire damage, odi believes that the actions ford has agreed to take will provide effective and expeditious resolution for vehicles that were built during the period when valves with inadequate resistance to ozone cracking were most likely to have been used in vehicle production.Further investigation of this matter would not be an efficient allocation of agency resources.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

When driving the car suddenly lurches forward. I have had the car 3 days and it has done this twice. Both times i was on city streets driving up a slight incline. The first time i was driving about 35 mph. Two different towns two different hills. The first was a freeway overpass and the second was just a street on a hill. Today i had just pulled out from a stop sign and was accelerating up the hill between 20-30 mph it lurched/surged again!

My 2007 ford freestyle is lunging when i am stopped and take my foot off brake pedal. Very dangerous situation as this could easily caused other property damage or even bodily injury should someone be walking in front of my vehicle. I see that there have been numerous complaints with regards to this problem. The lunging seems worse when it is hot outside and car ac is on. If vehicle is allowed to idle in hot weather for more than 5-10 minutes the wrench light will generally come out and engine will die. An accident could easily occur which would not be the fault of the driver.

Well i noticed this issue a couple months ago, i bought the car back in july of 2019 with 123,000 miles. Whenever i go to park or reverse with the a/c on or anything my car lunges without me even touching the acceleration and i have to slam on the brakes not to hit anything. And today i reversed out of a parking spot and it lunges as usual and when i started driving down the road a wrench light flashed on and i wasn't getting as much acceleration as usual. I've been researching and this seems to be a problem a lot of people have had with this car. It just scares me with it lunging and speeding up on its own in drive thrus, parking lots/spots, and simply when i'm sitting and turn my wheel just a little bit it decides it wants to accelerate on its on! All this happened mostly when i just start driving, or pulling in somewhere or reversing, and sometimes when i'm stationary at a drive thru.

During low speeds the vehicle surges!. Without holding the brake down hard this would have resulted in damage to my vehicle and in some cases others. This occurs sometimes at a complete stop like in line at a restaurant or even in a parking spot. This obviously only happens when the vehicle is in gear (drive). This has happened many times and usually when the vehicle is warmed up. It has also died after the surge. *tr

Lunging, lugging, while stationary or at low speed, forward or reverse, warning lights come on. I see this same complaint hundreds of times on this nhtsa site as well as internet searches. After reading numerous detailed issues and matching mine to specific complaints, it was determined that the issue is the throttle body. I took my vehicle to my trusted mechanic for removal and thorough cleaning. This inexpensive repair resolved the engine lunging issue. Please provide this information to ford service departments via bulletins or whatever, so this problem can be resolved easily and quickly. The lunging is a serious problem, with the vehicle suddenly surging forward from an idling position with foot on the brake. I see that expensive, unnecessary repairs are being performed which have nothing to do with the issue. It is a throttle body that just needs to be cleaned.

Auto was repaired 2008 by non ford dealer before the recall happened for problem of auto surging forward and backwards. Then ford reimbursed the money $700.00 of repair. Now car has 110k miles and is surging forward and backwards again . Very dangerous for me and family. I would like for ford to repair my vehicle again. Original repair was for the car surging forward and backwards and i feel that with only 110k miles on it, i should not be experiencing this dangerous issue again!!!

Transmission makes a buzzin, whirring sound in park and reverse...From what i read online from many others..This noise preludes transmission failure while driving down the road...Most of the time causing an emergency situation that could cause an accident with personal injury...Ford is aware of the problem, or should be by the numerous complaints over the years, but has yet to owe up to the transmission failures, causing a monetary hardship for the owners of said vehicles or the almost total loss of the vehicles value. It is the responsibility of the nhtsa to investigate complaints such as these, then demand the manufacturers start the recall process to permanently repair said transmissions ( cvt ) or replace complete unit at manufacturers expense. Start the job you people are paid generously to do. U tube has many videos of people telling their problems, and videos of mechanics explaining the problems

Driving down street. My car felt like it was resisting my giving it gas. @ warning lights came on. (the engine and the wrench) pulled over and called a tow truck. Had it towed to a mechanic. Fault codes for cvt transmission, range performance, control solenoid, control sys. No parts available to repair. No way to rebuild transmission or purchase rebuilt. Must replace with used transmission that will most likely have the same problems.

I left work at 8:10 p.M. Starting driving home and my battery light came on while driving on a major highway and then everything shut down radio a.C. All gauges windows power locks lights . I was panicked i had just picked up the car the afternoon before from the ford dealership for a recall fix because this same thing happened already i was told the recall fix would solve the problem obviously it did not. Now ford wants to charge a diagnostic fee to find the problem after failing to fix the problem to begin with . This is a real safety issue and should be dealt with i am a mom and a grand mother and always have a child in my car this issue should be a great concern to ford .

My freestyle accelerators/ lunges forward for "no reason" when i'm pushing on brake to park. This has happened numerous times at grocery store, wal-mary etc. Last tuesday was the scariest. I was with my mom driving to the bank and as i was parking it accelerated much more than it normally does. We hopped the curb and almost crashed into the bank wall. My foot was on the brake! I have seen several mechanics who have no clue and can't find anything wrong. I went immediately to seen another recommend seasoned mechanic who said he had no idea what it could be and saw nothing wrong. I'm scared to drive my cat or even park it. I only park away from other cars now. If someone would have been in front of my cat at the bank, they would have been seriously injured. I googled the problem and saw other people had reported the same thing and i'm hoping that you guys can tell me what the issue was since there were numerous other complaints. Thank you so much for your time.

The car is self accelerating!! It is very scary. It does it when i am on drive trying to slow down and stop or when i have been parked and try to backup slowly to move in reverse. It therefore, happens mostly at red lights, stop signs, and in parking lots. I am terrified the car will run over a person crossing the street or walking behind my car in a parking space. When the car self accelerates, it does it suddenly and forcefully. In that split second i slam on the brakes to avoid running over a crossing pedestrian or winding up at crossroads and cause an accident. When i step on the brakes, the car shakes and dies. I have to quickly restart the car again. This constant dying and restarting of the car at red lights and parking lots had drained my battery. This exact self accelerating problem happened in 2011. It was "fixed" at the maxwell ford dealership in 5000 south i-35 78745. They said it was the throttle. I had a new ac compressor put in recently and suddenly the problem came back. The last four years the ac has not worked well. I wonder if there is a a connection between the proper functionality of both parts - the throttle and the ac. I am desperate to have it repaired again, and of course at no expense of mine since it has been obviously a continuous factory/design defect. Please help, i have less than $200 in my account and i depend on my car for my livelihood.

My daughter was driving the car at the time and felt a large bang then shuddering with the vehicle becoming difficult to steer and losing control, veering off the road edge. She regained control and brought the car to a safe stop. She called me for assistance and i found the rear sub frame is inferior in construction and had extensive perforation inconsistent with the rest of the vehicle. This caused the rear control arm to separate from the sub frame. The rear wheel became unstable causing the vehicle to lose control. I have contacted ford on the issue, they have recalls on the escape and windstar for the same problem. I have also found the same reports from other freestyle owners. Ford refused to assist on the matter. This is a serious safety issue. This occurred at relatively low speed approx. 35 miles per our. Had this occurred at highway speeds my daughter may have been injured or killed.

I was on the parkway going about 65 mph. I stopped at a light to turn. As i pressed on the pedal the car did not accelerate normally. It was sluggish. I pulled over to let traffic pass. I turned off the car and turned it on again. The car started and i was able to drive it about a 1/4 mile before it stopped accelerating. In that 1/4 mile the car barely accelerated. I had to press the pedal far to raise the rpms a little bit. Had i continued to drive down that parkway i would have been hit by another car. I had to be towed home.

On may 27th, 2017, we were traveling at 50-55 mph with cruise control engaged on the highway when our ford freestyle began lurching badly and the rpm began surging. In a a few minutes the wrench light came on along with the engine light, battery light, abs light and airbag light. Our speedometer began flipping back and forth uncontrollably. At that point the vehicle would not exceed 25-30 mph even at full speed. We could have been rear-ended! We immediately pulled off at a gas station to check the oil levels and check to see what was wrong. We started the vehicle back and returned home cautiously. We took the vehicle to the nearest lube place and got the oil changed. We returned home and researched about the issue. My husband (who is very mechanically inclined) decided to follow a mechanic's advice and cleaned the throttle body thoroughly with seafoam and a toothbrush. It was filthy and had lots of deposits built up on it. He unplugged the battery to reset everything and reinstalled the throttle body. It proved ineffective so we purchased a new throttle body for $320 from advanced auto parts. He installed it today and the problem has not been solved. We are at a loss and are not sure what to do. This issue should have been recalled. I am a mother of 3 and am currently pregnant with my fourth child and i do not feel safe driving this vehicle!

Unknown reason: on dec.28 2016 i@ 1535 i was driving on interstate #30 in arkansas. I was driving @ a speed of 70 mph when all the power went off in my car. I was unable to turn on flashers or restart car. Behind me was a 18 wheeler and on my right side was a car. I immediately began to lose speed. It just so happened that the other drivers noticed i was in trouble. Both drivers put their hazard lights on and slowed traffic enabling me to steer the car ( with no power) to the shoulder. I put the car in park turned the radio and heater off and tried to restart it. It did restart but i left the radio and heater off. I was 34.1 mi from home. I prayed all the way home and did not drive over 60 mph.( i could have been killed !!!). When i finally arrived at home, i put my car in park and the car turned itself off. Our 2007 ford freestyle is lunging when it is idling or at low speeds, especially when you turn the steering wheel. This happens in forward and reverse. It has been happening increasingly for the past few months. There has not been an accident yet, but several close calls. It is difficult to control and not always predictable. We are very cautious where we park and try to avoid parking next to cars(nearly impossible) and especially expensive vehicles because it is likely this will cause us to hit another vehicle at some point.

From the 1st day i leased the vehicle from progressive auto, i could hear it raving high, steering wheel really heavy, brakes seemed strange and heavy to move. But the sales man kept telling and showing me a report that the vehicle is fine, and kept saying, its the type of engine in the vehicle (cvt) that's why it all seems strange. I kept going back to them advising them that i know something is wrong, but they kept saying they cannot find anything wrong. Finally i took it to a ford dealership, and they advised me it was a transmission, brakes and suspension problem. And this was not even 2 months down the road. I was very upset and wanted to return the vehicle. So they decided to claim to fix the transmission by installing a used one. I had to get the other things fixed myself. Not even a year and some later, i have to replace the transmission again. Before the transmission completely died, as i was driving it started to stall to a point i almost got into a car accident with kids in the back, as the car kept jerking and i didn't know what was happening. This was the worst vehicle i have ever purchased in my life time. And the best part, is one one wants to take ownership of the problem with the vehicle that seems to be very very common. I wish the problems were easily diagnosed when first happening, and it would have saved me alot of headaches. I am usually a import vehicle individual, but i choose ford as i heard great things about them. But now i will never buy a ford again as it has been the worst experience i have had. I need over $3000 to fix the transmission and the vehicle is not even worth that much!

I had bought a used ford freestyle 2007 for a little over $6,000.00 with 102,000 miles on it and after almost exactly a year later, i was going to take off from a stop sign near my house and without even reaching 30 miles per hour the suv made a loud winding sound and the cvt transmission completely shut down without any warning and the transmission icon on the dash popped on. I tried to roll to the side of the road but ended up stuck in the middle. I tried shutting down the whole car and turning it back on with no luck. Luckily family lived near by and they helped me by pulling it with a rope home. We had it checked out and the transmission is bad now to get it fixed would cost $5,000+ pretty much totaling the suv unfortunately we have no insurance and we are left with a $6,000.00 lemon in our driveway thanks ford. When looking up to see if other people had the problem we did we were shocked that the 2005-2007 ford freestyles have thousands of complaints for the same thing and no recall what is going on they should either recall the cvt transmission or take the suv off the market. Family's with more than three kids are going to be in the market for those cars and to completely shut down without warning is very dangerous. Luckily i was near home in the summer months but what are they waiting for. What if it was the dead of winter i was on the freeway and had all my children with and it was bad traffic everyone in the car would most likely die. Please get the recall for this worthless cvt transmission.

The cvt transmission in this vehicle is not safe. Not sure why there hasn't been an investigation as of yet. My car started out making a humming sound and now has progressed to the point i need a new transmission. After lengthy research online i have found this is a common problem with this vehicle as well as in other ford vehicles. I have read of failures in these types of transmission as early as 15,000 miles on the vehicle. This is a well known problem including the fact that there is a class action suit on this matter which as far as i know is still pending. Apparently ford has known of the problem, hence they stopped using and manufacturing this transmission making the parts to repair this transmission outrageously priced. So not only is ford profiting from the sale of these vehicles, now they are profiting from the sale of the parts as well. Now i have my vehicle in for repair for an outrageous amount of money. This vehicle is not safe. Failure can come at any time under any situation without warning. This vehicle can cause an accident or even worse bodily harm or even death when this transmission fails completely. I am quite sure by the shear numbers of complaints i have read that someone has contacted you in regards to this product. If not i am. Please help the small guy out.

I am having trouble with the cvt transmission in my car when i put it in gear it lunges almost over powering the breaks. It also will stall if i have to hit the breaks hard to come to a stop real fast. I will be getting in the highway and every so often it will not shift it just runs at really high rpm. It will also loose power suddenly and a wrench light will come on that limits me to 2000 rpm and i have had to pull off to the side of the highway many times because of this. I have been doing some research and i have come to find out that thousands of people have had some of these same problems and ford won't do anything about them. I feel unsafe while driving my car but it is my only transportation at the time so i have no other option is have also experienced problems with my awd and i feel it can't work because of the problems of my transmissio .

Put car in drive started down the street when all of a sudden the transmission started making noise and the car started slowing down. I pulled over and parked the car then turned it off, try to start it back up but the car would not move when put in drive. It would reverse but it would not go forward. Had to call fro a tow truck and have vehicle towed to dealer. The following codes showed up when the repair shop checked the transmission: po 218, po 701, po868, po871, po961. The ford dealership said that the transmission would have to be replaced because the transmission was dead. I have looked up the ford freestyle and have found that there are many vehicles with this same problem. I could have had a bad accident i was on the highway because the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road and traffic had to veer around me to keep from hitting me. I had children in the vehicle we could have died. A new transmission cost me $2200.00 and the cost to have it replaced was $900.00. I have 2007 ford freestyle, on multiple occasions when you have the brake pressed waiting to back up or start forward the car surges and lunges forward like it's trying to go on it's own. We have had the throttle system cleaned and it helped for a little bit now it's getting worse. And recently it does the lunging surge then the wrench light comes on and the car loses all power and cuts off , you have to put it in gear , restart the car and try again. I'm scared with the surging that i'm going to get in a accident. Ford says it's not a recall and they investigated and don't know the cause.

April 2015, my vehicle started making knocking/grinding/ticking noises once it was started. Sometimes the transmission would fail to shift into gear(s). I prodeeded to physically move my shifter into gear(s) a few times. The transmission then shifted into gear(s), making a hard "clunk" sound. Sounding like the transmission had 'dropped' into gear; as if it had a low trasmission fluid level. Mind you, recently, a local shop changed my oil and all fluids were checked and refilled if needed. The shop informed me about code P0942, because they had never seen this code before in their life! Engine-codes.Com states: "P0942 - hydraulic pressure unit" with a rating of 3/3 (3=high). I called a local ford dealership, and was informed about this code; which doesn't identify the actual problem/issue; resulting in no specifics. On thursday, august 20, 2015, while driving on the highway, my vehicle started to surge, and the rpm's continuously fluctuated (while the cruise was on). My vehicle then started to shake, and made a thumping/crunching noise, followed with the forward propulsion ceasing to exist. I frantically turned my fore ways on, and drifted until at a complete stop on the sholder of the highway. Again, while i physically shifted gear(s), the transmission sounded low on fluid, as if no (valid) shifting of gear(s)s and also maintained a humming noise. From the passenger seat, my 12 year old son, grabbed my hand and asked me to pray with him; pray that we'd make it home without getting hurt (our safety). Numerous times our vehicle shook tremendously when other vehicles passed by. Once home, i was still calming my son down, we both needed to sleep. That night, my son and i experienced a tramatic (nightmare like) situation. Now, ford customers are forced upon (a) safety hazzard(s). Yes, preventable safety hazzard(s), if dealt with asap.

I purchased this vehicle 01/20/15 from a used lot in raleigh nc, 'something you should never do in the first place''. I had just got off maternity leave and i needed a car so i could be able to get to work. On the 4th of april 2015. I was driving the car on the highway when it started to jerk back and make a very loud roaring sound. The car started to slow down and jerk back and forth if you went over 20 miles per hour. I pulled over to check the car and i could not figure out what was wrong with it so i called my husband and he came. The car could still drive but very slowly while making the same sound so he drove very slowly behind me. Keep in mind i had my two month old in the back seat when all of this craziness was happening. Next day i couldn't even drive the car because of the poor condition it was in. When we took it to a specialized mechanic for this cvt transmission it has, they notified us after waiting four to five hours to replace this unique engine it would cost $4-$6,000 dollars. That is insane to have to replace the entire transmission after only having it for two months and to replace it because ''ford'' is too cheap and inconsiderate to not recall this piece of crap of a car. How can ford ignore this issue that it is causing world wide. It is not just one or two minor issues it is the entire transmission that needs to be replaced. Wake up ford!! This is a terrible vehicle to sell to the american people!! I wouldn't even sale this vehicle in foreign countries!! My advice to anyone is to never ever buy any ford vehicles!! I have not had a catastrophic incident, yet, but certain to after researching the issue i am experiencing from the cvt transmission in this vehicle. Since about january 2015, while in park or neutral, there is a loud whirring sound, similar to a helicopter. After extensive online research, it seems that most, if not all others who experienced this same issue eventually led to catastrophic failure of the transmission. I have also experienced the cold weather related issue where once drive is engaged, the check engine light and wrench light illuminate and the car just stumbles when the accelerator is depressed. Letting it run for about 10 to 15 minutes temporarily resolves the issue. *tr

I got into my car, turned the key in the ignition and it started sounding like a helicopter. This noise happens while the vehicle is in park, neutral and while reversing. I have spoken with a transmission shop and have been told it is a known problem with the internal components of the transmission. It will cost around $6000.00 to fix. There is still plenty of life left in my car. No body or interior or damage/issues. I still have 2 years left on my loan. If ford knows about this issue it should have been repaired. This is dangerous and now i am not able to drive my car for fear of getting hurt or being stranded. *tr

No loss of power this vehicle gets driven about 100 miles a day. Last week had dealer look and tell me the torque converter about to break. Can only fix it with complete new tranny install. $6300!!! Took it to independent transmission guy and tells me same thing with lower price. 2 hours later after i stopped car and went into store and started car up and the wrench was lit up on dash. No power. Revving really high. Bucking and undriveable. Got a code reader and code p042-hydraulic pressure unit came up let car sit for 30 mins then turned car on and wrench display gone! Moved car out of road to safety and there it sits. Should i be fixing a car that cannot be guaranteed to never do this again as all cvt transmissions do this? How can ford be ok with this? My vehicle is amazing and roomy and safe and i hate to think its ready for the junkyard at 140k. So disappointed with ford. Please join me in hopes that ford will step up to the plate and acknowledge this. *js

I have two 2007 ford one is a freestyle and the other is a sport trac and they are having the same problem. The inside lights come on and off by themselves. They stay on for a few minutes then they click back off then back on and off again. The freestyle does not have a auto switch for the lights but the sport trac does. It happens all the while that you are driving which in the state of texas if the inside lights are on while driving you can get a ticket.

Description of failure ford motor case no. [xxx] december 2, 2014 2007 ford freestyle sel fwd ' 89,800 miles very good condition- original owner on november 26, 2014 owner experienced problem with passenger rear wheel. Wheel was swaying in an outward direction on the base of the wheel and driver was not able to control the automobile. Upon inspection at metro ford sales (where automobile was purchased) on december 2, 2014 it was found that the rear suspension sub-frame had failed through extensive rust. The lower control arm bracket had broken free of the actual suspension sub-frame body. This allowed the base of the wheel system to project in an outward direction and caused the loss of control and traction. The maintenance personal determined that they would not be able to repair the sub-frame assembly. The corrective action would be the removal of the sub-frame assembly and the replacement with a serviceable assembly. There is no doubt in the minds of the service personal that the cause of the failure was extensive and unusual rust. Upon inspection of the remainder of the undercarriage framework there was comparatively little rust to other components. The exhaust system, which is adjacent to the failed sub-frame system, had very little rust and was still very serviceable this is a very troubling situation since the car was rarely driven in the snow. Furthermore, the automobile has always been housed in a climatically controlled garage system throughout its lifespan. At this juncture, it is very obvious to all parties concerned that the sub-frame in question was manufactured with sub-standard steel and alloys. While lifting the vehicle to change a flat tire, the service jack buckled about one inch from the pivot where the saddle the pinch rail rests on and the vehicle dropped. The vehicle was on level ground with the emergency brake set. This is disturbing as i was a ford mechanic for five years and have worked in numerous shops and have never come close to dropping a vehicle. The jack creased at the buckle point and besides the buckled section still appears new. The jack will be saved if the unit or pictures are needed. *tr

So i used to have problems with the rpm surge in my car then a customer satisfaction program (csp) came out and i had the throttle body deposits cleaned as per the csp12n03 in april of 2013. I have not had any issues until july 2014. Major issue- i was on the interstate on july 27th and my car began decelerating really quickly. The wrench light came on during this deceleration and i had to come to a stop in the v where cars are merging onto the interstate. I had to stop because my car slowed so drastically that i would have not made it to the shoulder of the road and would have gotten hit by another motorist. When i came to a stop my car was actually still running, i manually turned the car off. After i sat for a moment, i decided i would see if my car would crank. The car cranked and died and finally stayed cranked, i decided to try to move the car. The wrench light was no longer on and the car did exactly what a normal car would do. I was able to get up to speed and exit and drive the rest of the way home. I took it for diagnostics, the ford dealership where i live say that it is the throttle body (the part that had a csp on it). I do not feel that i should have to pay 1000 dollars or more to have a faulty part replaced. Obviously something is wrong with this otherwise ford would not have had the part cleaned. I would like for ford to replace the part on my car and anyone else's vehicles that is having the throttle issues. Even though after some of the parts have been replaced, the issue starts again. I noticed that some of the investigations into ford throttle issues include years 2009 and newer for that limp mode thing, however, my car is a 2007 and totally did the decelerating on the interstate. It was very frightening and i would like this issue to become a recall for a replacement. I called ford and filed a complaint today, 9/15/2014. *tr

I was driving through a very busy intersection and heard a thump. My 2007 ford freestyle stopped in its tracks and would not move. I just about caused a major accident. One of the vehicles behind me ran over a sidewalk to avoid this. Luckily no one was walking. I had some people push me to the side of the road and had it towed to dealer. There they let me know my cvt transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $6500. There was no warning it was about to break, no noises or funny things happened just died. *tr

I was driving out of the driveway and onto a somewhat busy street. As i attempted to accelerate, i noticed i could not go any faster than about 10 mph despite being in a zone of approximately 35 mph. After traveling less than a mile at this speed, i turned around and return the car to the driveway. I then proceeded to have it towed to a repair shop, who reported this was a transmission issue. This repair shop asked for our permission to tow the vehicle to another shop who specializes in transmission issues. We agreed then later received word that the transmission was "shot" and the cost to repair would be in the area of approximately $4,500. When i looked up the value of the car on line, it was showing it's running value of approximately the same amount. The transmission repair shop stated that they were told by a local ford dealer that the models of 2005 through 2007 ford freestyle's cvt type of transmission was the cause of the problem. They were also told that ford didn't have sufficient inventory of parts to repair the transmission, and by the way there was no recall notice out on them since parts weren't available. I am now stuck with a car that will not run, nor can i sell or trade in as it has little to no value at this time. Ford needs to step up and take responsibility for this faulty designed cvt transmission's. *tr

There's a warning sticker saying no one should sit in the third row while the seat in front is folded. I'm still going to have to put my kids in the third row. I have 3 kids. Ewald said it would be $600 some to fix it and i don't think i should be responsible. I know it's an older car but it's not like i have ever folded the seat down before where it would wear out. I fold the second row 1/3 seat down all the time to let someone in the back. I believe this is a safety issue that ford should recall or the ewald dealership should take care of. *tr

About month later same problem and engine code. Replaced fuel sensor myself. Problem returned 2 days later without engine code. People need to petition ford .... Or start a mass lawsuit against what should be a massive re-call , why is the government not jumping in to force action , like they are now doing with gm ..... A 35k car should be built safer, to worried about everyone wearing seatbelts, but not about vehicles that lunge forward or just can't accelerate , the transmission is junk and we pay for it. *tr

When starting the vehicle a loud rattling noise can be heard. This noise stops temporarily when the car is shifted from "park" to "drive". The noise then becomes progressively louder when the accelerator is pressed. Gas mileage has declined when driving. When parking on one occasion the car lunged forward without accelerating the gas pedal. I took the car into a automotive repair shop to see what the problem was and they indicated that the entire transmission needs to be replaced because of defective design/materials in the "continuously variable transmission" (cvt). Ford has done nothing to provide a replacement transmission at no charge and has not modified cvt to correct this obvious manufacturing defect. *tr

Over the last couple of years, i've noticed that the vehicle would jump a little when shifted into gear. Occasionally, the same little lurch would happen at a stoplight. Today, while stopped at idle the engine repeatedly revved over the course of about 10 seconds causing the vehicle to jump forward even with the brakes applied. Shortly after, a similar problem occurred, but not as pronounced as the previous event. After the incident, the performance of the engine seemed to have degraded and the vehicle was only able to accelerate very slowly. *tr

After starting the 2007 ford freestyle it idols about 1000rpms. Upon putting it into drive or reverse when you lift off the brake the car will rev up the engine to about 2000rpms and speed forward or backward. This rev of the engine last approximately 1 second and then the car returns to normal idol speed. This creates a dangerous situation in which if you do not anticipate the acceleration you could have an accident. *tr

I have had my 2007 ford freestyle since 2008. This car has been a money pit. I have had to get a water pump, ac compressor, and throttle body, now it needs an expensive faulty transmission replaced called cvt transmission. The car is now parked for safety and to avoid further damage. The issue that i have experienced is while my foot completely on the break, the car has darted forward with out my ability to stop it. I have had this happen with people walking in front of me in the cross walk while at the stop light and my car has darted at them. Scary!! To say the least. I would not be surprised if anyone else has hit someone due to this problem. I don't drive the car anymore because it shut off on me while in traffic, unexpectedly, gratefully the person behind me was paying attention. I have fixed the ac compressor, throttle body, and water pump, i cannot possibly replace the transmission, i have 3 children and now without a car. I would not feel safe even after it is fixed. From reading other complaints this car is made faulty, and is going to fell me in some other expensive or dangerous way. To my knowledge ford has discontinued making the freestyle and is now making taurus in its place. They should have recalled every single ford freestyle, this car is dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!! It has been made to fail, i hope ford can restore my trust in them. I do not want any other ford because of this. *tr

First happened the day i bought the vehicle used with 93,000 miles. I was backing out of a parking space and the vehicle lunged. It also turned off. It did it twice in a row. Then no problems for another few hundred miles. It does it every tank or so of gas. Occasionally it will be accompanied with the wrench light. I brought it to a local auto shop when the light was on (pure luck because it turns off quickly after) and it coded something but then when the searched the code it came up as not matching my vehicle! I am bringing it to a dealership next week for service before a long road trip and hope to have the throttle body cleaned. From what i gather this is a known and widespread problem with this vehicle. I really wish they would recall it and fix it! *tr

I had bought a freestyle in 2012, the vehicle started make a noise from the transmission. Had it checked out to were i was told it needed to be flushed. After the service the trans was alright for about another month and started again while on the highway.. The trans then proceeded to make a terrible noise and then started to sound like a helicopter and lost the drive gear. This transmission is not safe to be in a vehicle, also has been said by many employees that it is unsafe. I hope this can get looked into again and be taken care of! *tr

The cvt transmission in the 2007 ford freestyle are useless. I am not the only one having to replace a transmission way before time. I had a 1996 camry with 230, 000 miles on it and i never had to replace a transmission or the engine. Now, i am left to replace a transmission that ford knew was a bad product (hence, stopping the manufacturing of the freestyle, revamping the transmission and other problems areas and putting it back into rotation as the taurus x). I still owe alot of money on this car. I know that ford finally did a rebate of sorts for the poorly designed throttle body and thankful i have received a refund for that expense. How long will it take for ford to compensate us freestyle owners with a horribly designed transmission? I really wished i had never given up my toyota camry. I felt safer in that car than my freestyle. *tr

My 2007 ford freestyle began lunging while sitting in traffic and soon after that began making a grinding noise. I took my car to a local ford dealership and was told that it would be around $5000 to pull and check the transmission. This is crazy. I had several problems with the lunging forward and now this noise which ford states they are not responsible for. The car only has 50,000 miles on it. I do believe this is a safety issue and now i'm left without a car to drive because i'm afraid i will do further damage to the transmission or even yet hurt someone with the lunging problem. I don't think i should be responsible for a problem that ford needs to correct and it is a safety issue. *tr

At 49,660 miles we had to have the throttle body changed because the car lunged forward and stalled out. On june 19, 2012 our 2007 ford freestyle was serviced with a transmission flush and fluid change, and a multi-point inspection. Everything looked good. On nov. 5, 2012 it would rev up when driving and would not accelerate. After researching, we found out that the cvt transmission that was put in the 2005-2007 ford freestyle is a defective design that poses numerous safety concerns. Ford does not even make the transmission any more, so our only choice is to pay over $5000 for a used/rebuilt one that may have the same problems. Our car is only 5 years old. We have taken good care of it. We need a reliable vehicle and do not have the money to fix this. Please have ford recall these faulty cvt transmissions and have more concern for safety and customer satisfaction. *tr

While driving on vacation to our destination in south carolina, with my wife, daughter, dog, and myself and a car full of luggage. Traveling at approximately 60 mph in the hills of west virginia, i applied more throttle approximately 3/4 of the way up one of the large hills. The cvt transmission 'downshifted' (actually it doesn't downshift, rather it just adjusted it's ratio quickly to improve torque output to the wheels -- i'm an engineer) and there was a huge clunk and the accelerator no longer affected acceleration. Fortunately, i had enough momentum to crest the top of the hill and coasted down the hill on the other side. At 67,000 miles, our extended warranty of 5 years or 75,000 miles that we paid ford for had just expired months before. The outcome? A tow to a ford dealer, a 40 mile drive to the nearest car rental agency that was open (it was a saturday), certainly a big bill coming from the ford dealer, and a 6 hour delay in reaching our destination left me frazzled. Maybe this is a one-off, issue, i thought. However, when i got to our destination today, i went on-line looking to see about typical repair costs for ford's cvt transmission and instead i am finding dozens of similar stories on-line about the freestyle cvt. What's going on here, i thought? How can this be occurring at a mileage so far below the mileage that the oems design for (at ford this is typically 150,000 miles). Something seems amiss here to me with nhtsa regarding this component design at ford. I realize that you should and must prioritize the most serious issues first regarding injury and/or death but your mission also speaks of reducing economic losses. I encourage you to respond to me directly if at all possible. As an engineer in the automotive market for 20 years, i am very confident there is a design or manufacturing flaw that consumers are living with. *tr

We purchased this vehicle on wednesday august 8th, 2012. We were backing up out of a parking spot and as my husband turned the steering wheel the car accelerated backwards and the car shut off after he hit the brakes. He did not have his foot on the accelerator at all. In fact, he was in transition from the brake and his foot hadn't even hit the accelerator pedal yet. This is the only problem we have experienced since having the vehicle. I would not say it lunges forward or reverse- i would say it hops forward or reverse. It's seems to be a spurt of acceleration. The vehicle shifts fine into gear, no stalls, no grinding noises, just little spurts when it's backing up. The only difference between my husbands driving and mine is that i always engage the emergency brake when i park. I'm used to driving manual transmissions. So, when i put the vehicle into reverse i still have the emergency brake on and the spurts do not occur with my driving. I did find it alarming that with my particular vehicle it does not require my foot to be on the brake pedal in order to start the vehicle. I can start the vehicle by simply turning the key. This is not something i'm used to seeing in modern vehicles as i am used to driving volkswagen's. I'm concerned because i don't know if this problem will get worse. Will i drive down the road and not be able to stop? I can't afford extra parts. I love everything about this vehicle (and from a volkswagen enthusiast that says a lot). I just don't know what to do or what the worst case scenario is. I don't want to lose my life. *tr

The freestyle will rev and surge forward or backwards when in gear and idle. This primarily occurs when the a/c unit is on. I have to apply the brakes until the car goes back to normal rpm. Typically this happens in parking lots or drive-thru lanes and has caused me several close calls for collisions. Sometimes after the surge happens, the wrench light on the dash comes on. I am not able to drive as the car feels underpowered and i cannot accelerate well. Turning off the car, waiting a bit, then restarting seems to reset it. In june 2011 i had to bring my vehicle in for service, i noticed prior to my vehicle breaking down the vehicle would lurch even thou my foot was not on the accelerator pedal (in forward or reverse). The temp outside was in the low 90's. I had bought this vehicle in the fall of 2010. Now today (18 july 2012) i am once again taking my car in for the same repairs (parts replacement). The temp yesterday was near 90, i had the air on and was backing into a parking spot when my vehicle lurched back instantly without my foot on the accelerator (i had to slam on the brakes) so i did not crash into the other vehicle in the stall behind the one i was baking into. All the sudden the engine stalled; i re-started the vehicle (and the check engine light came on and is now on constantly as it was back in 2011). When i left the parking slot i was in i attempted to go home; the vehicle lurched the whole time i was in the parking lot, once i was on the main road the vehicle would not accelerate normally; also the cruise control would not work. Again; these are the same problems i had in 2011. I crept my car to the superior ford dealership where i had the work done before. I was stopped and waiting for an on-coming metro bus to pass. I had three passengers in my vehicle and the air conditioner was running. The bus needed to move into my lane to pass a car that was trying to parallel park. I had my steering wheel already turned to the right and stepped off of my brake to coast a little to the right. When i stepped off the brake, the vehicle lurched forward as if i had stepped on the gas pedal. There was a line of parked cars to my right, which is why i chose to not use the gas to move the car over. After the bus passed, i drove forward a few blocks at a low speed and realized i was unable to accelerate and the wrench light had come on. My vehicle was towed back the ford dealership and the problem was solved by the mechanic following tsb 11-10-21 for P061B. *tr

Bought 2007 used ford freestyle with 22,000 miles on jan 31, 2009 from ford dealership replaced throttle body in july 2011 and again in march 2012 due to surging forward replaced converter and compressor in the same 13 month time period as the two throttle body replacement wrench light comes on intermittently, took to dealership for them to diagnose hydraulic pressure unit failure, stated that part is no longer made therefore only option is to replace entire transmission at a cost of 5600-7000 dollars. This car is not safe, has surged forward multiple times, when taking off car will not accelerate which almost caused me to be t-boned with my four small children in the car, at times will not start or dies and have to pull over on side of road -- much more details documented if needed for investigation. *tr

I have had the throttle replaced last year around june 2011 and lately (only a year later july 2012) the throttle is accelerating on its on own once again when i'm parking my vehicle and while backing out (reverse). Why isn't this on a recall list by now??? *tr

My transmission light came on and when i took it to the shop, they told me that i had to replace the entire transmission and that it would cost me $5000. They also stated that these cars are known for this. That is when i began to research this particular issue. I can not believe that this is a known issue and thousands of people are having this problem and ford has not recalled this. I understand this would cost ford a lot of money but they made a defected transmission and should be liable to replace them. They have plenty of money. People like me cant just afford $5000 to replace a transmission in a car. I have no idea what i am going to do. This is life altering for me. A single mom of five children and very disappointing to find out a name as big as ford is allowed to do this to people. *tr

After several hours of sitting in the heat (90+ f) the car failed to start. The engine never turned over, or made any sound indicating the starter was even doing anything. After closing the drivers door and turning off the a/c, the engine started up as it would normally. This has happened on 3 separate occasions. *tr

We had noticed that the car would surge from time to time at lower speeds. I found some information on the wed that indicated that nhtsa was investigating a lunging problem. I took that information to the dealership and was sure that they would repair because of the safety issues. I found that they would not, but they have a tsb 11-10-21 for the problem that appears to be like what we are experiencing. I am a professor in the automotive engineering technology department at minnesota state university, mankato and this is a definite safety issue. Yesterday while hooking up a trailer, the car lunged in reverse.....My wife was trying to hook up a trailer with someone between the car and trailer. No one was injured, but it is a safety problem. *tr

Bought vehicle used 8 days ago. On two occasions, once yesterday and once today, the vehicle seemed to throttle up with gas pedal not applied and foot on brake. Both instances were in a parking lot. On both instances...Outside temperature was over 100 degrees f and the air conditioner was on in both front/back modes. I simply put the car in drive and as i was turning out of parking spot, foot on brake maneuvering turn...The vehicle lunged forward. Startled me on both occasions. I was able to stop vehicle, but some distance had occurred. Fortunately, no one was in front of me. The "lunge" almost feels like you "stomped" the gas pedal to the floor for just a second. That is the best description of what the discrepancy feels like. I'm very worried...Just purchasing this vehicle. It's the weekend, so i will be in contact with a dealership first thing. *tr

While driving in 90 degree + temperatures, we have noticed that the car lurches while reversing from a parking spot, or at a stop. Braking does stop the unexpected acceleration, however it still feels unsafe. This has happened 3-6 times, and as recently as today (7/17/12). It is not driver error - again has happened enough that we are able to analyze that the foot is not on the gas. Check engine light comes on when this occurs. *tr

After enduring a summer filled with the typical surging issue, the transmission started making a light grinding sound in park and neutral. Come december 2012, i received a recall notice from ford concerning the throttle body issue, and in january 2013 took it in for the recall service. About a week later, the cvt transmission's grinding noise had gotten worse, so i took it into the ford dealer here in town and they said i needed a new transmission to the tune of over $6000. Needless to say, i do not have $6000 to put into a 6 year old car that i still owe $8000 on (bought it in 2010). I've had tires last longer than this transmission, which is currently at 62,000 miles. Unthinkable that ford has produced such a flawed major component like a transmission, and not stood behind it, or supplies parts for it. I am livid, and after owning fords for over 30 years i have no idea what i will get next. I feel like i've been taken advantage of, and this freestyle is indeed a lemon. The car is unsafe to drive, and the cost to repair is not in line with the taurus x of 2008 which they introduced a transmission that actually worked. *tr

My freestyle has started to lunge forward at times when immediately taking my foot off the brake in forward or backward motion. After making a turn today it did it too, but this time the transmission light came on. It has happened many times over the last couple of months. The weather has been very hot too. I have a new teenaged driver so this is disconcerting.

My car (2007 ford freestyle) was stopped at the drive through and a local eatery. My foot was on the brake and the car started surging/lunging several times. I almost hit the car in front of me. It scared me. The wrench light and the engine light came on and the car cut off. I have the extended warranty, but of course the throttle body was not covered. Upon investigating my problem, i found out the lunging has been a problem with many other freestyles and an investigation had been started. Will there be a recall? This repair cost me almost $700 and i feel that ford should pay for this repair. Any help would be appreciated! *tr

During the week of july 2, 2012, we were in cleveland, ohio, and it was exceptionally hot. 100+ degree temperatures every day, so we had the air conditioning on full blast. When driving the car at slow rates of speed -- in parking garages, for instance -- or reversing out of parking spaces, the car lunged as though i'd accelerated, but my foot was either not on the accelerator at all, or on the brake. The following week, temperatures cooled, and the lunging was not as noticeable. The week of july 16, 2012, it was again hot, and the symptoms started again -- lunging when driving at slow rates of speed, reverse, etc. During this particular week, though, the car would stall as well. It always re-started, though. On july 27, 2012, the car again stalled, and then would not go more than 50 mph. When we took it to the dealer, we were told we needed a new transmission. For the lunging issue, research online shows that might be due to a dirty body throttle, but two separate dealers say that it's definitely the transmission. *tr

On and off over the month of july 2012, when i put my car in reverse to pull out of a parking spot or driveway it surges/jumps without my foot touching the gas pedal. It happens only when i try and reverse. This keeps happening and i'm afraid one day i'm going to hit someone or something as i can't control the surges. Also on july 7, 2012 the engine just cut off on me while reversing out of a parking space. I was able to start it back up again after it died. In december 2011 i had a new transmission put in. Also in june 2011 i had to replace the ac compressor. *tr

Over the months, when driving the vehicle there were inconsistent occurrences of surging forward or backward at low speeds without accelerating. Typically this has occurred when parking or backing out of a parking spot/garage. It has increased lately and this past friday, the vehicle surged greatly and then the engine stalled. This has happened after idling. The only "remedy" is shutting the vehicle down completely and then restarting. *tr

Vehicle speed surged without touching accelerator. I had to depress braking hard to stop vehicle. Vehicle cut off and when restarted the throttle light came on along with engine light. Very dangerous. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle lunged forward rapidly even though the accelerator pedal was not applied. The failure recurred several times while driving and while parking. The contact had to brake in order to stop acceleration. The check engine warning light and the service needed warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or repair shop for inspection or repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a diagnostic test was scheduled. The failure mileage was 79,000 and the current mileage was 80,000.

Our car has on several occasions accelerated on it's own. Mostly when it is hot out. It will accelerate either in reverse or forward without even having our foot on the gas pedal. On 6/21/2012 it almost fordced us out into an intersection. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving in reverse. The vehicle was restarted and a light on the instrument panel illuminated, indicating there was a problem. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. The contact was informed that the vehicle would need a new throttle body and a new transmission. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 120,000.

This vehicle will lurch forward, sometimes several feet when i have been stopped with my foot on the brake. If i lift my foot, the car will lurch forward before i touch the accelerator. Reapplying the brakes will stop the car, but sometimes have to turn off the engine before it will stop lurching. Last occurrence was when i was in line at carwash and was moving the car forward slowly. Each time i moved forward, it lunged. I haven't yet hit anyone or anything but this is dangerous and i know from researching that several hundred people have reported similar incidents, this is not normal, it is dangerous and should be recalled before someone is seriously injured. *tr

Loud whirring noise which gets louder with acceleration and is really loud going downhill when the engine is holding back. Also have two rust spots on the hood and the car is only 5 years old and has been kept clean and is waxed at least once per year. *tr

When i move my 2007 ford freestyle from park to reverse or drive, my car lunges forward unexpectedly even though i'm not pressing on the accelerator. I have to brake hard to stop the car. Sometimes the car's engine cuts out and the repair light goes on. When i restart the car it's ok. Seems to happen more in warmer weather. I am concerned that the lunging will cause an accident soon as i must slam on the brakes to stop it. *tr
