  • Recall 2021024 [Canada]: Structure
Issue: on certain vehicles, the rear frame could rust. In extreme cases, this could result in a rear trailing arm separating from the vehicle. This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage (ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island, and newfoundland & labrador). Safety risk: a rear trailing arm that separates could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: honda will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the rear trailing arm front mount bolts. If the vehicle passes the inspection, the dealer will apply corrosion protection and install support braces. Honda will offer to repurchase vehicles that do not pass the inspection. In the event the repurchase is declined by an owner, a secondary inspection and body shop repair method may be possible.

  • Recall 2019117 [Canada]: Airbag
Issue: on certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the driver-front airbag inflator. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, pieces could be propelled toward the occupants. This could also cause damage to the airbag assembly and prevent it from inflating properly. Note: this recall only affects certain vehicles that had a takata airbag inflator installed during a previous airbag recall or collision repair. Safety risk: in a crash where the airbag deploys, there could be an increased risk of injury. Corrective action: the company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the driver-front airbag inflator replaced.

  • Recall 2018523 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator.

  • Recall 2015225 [Canada]: Airbag
On certain vehicles, the driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Note: this recall supersedes special service campaign 2014567. Correction: dealers will inspect/replace the driver's frontal airbag inflator. All vehicles having received a replacement inflator as part of any previous driver's inflator campaign will have a replacement inflator installed. Note: honda canada has created a special airbag inflator hotline for immediate assistance. For more information, please contact: for honda owners: 1-877-445-7754 for acura owners: 1-877-445-9844

  • Recall 2014567 [Canada]: Airbag
Honda canada is conducting a voluntary safety improvement campaign concerning the driver's airbag inflator on certain vehicles equipped with takata airbags. Honda will replace the driver's inflator on affected vehicles. This action is not being conducted under the requirements of the motor vehicle safety act. Note: this special service campaign was replaced by recall 2015225. Please see recall 2015225 for more information: click here for more information

Known Recall Investigations
  • Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20210917

From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede ea15-001, which remains open.

  • Air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20150224

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe14-016 in june 2014 based on six inflator rupture incidents involving consumer owned vehicles produced by five vehicle manufacturers. All six vehicles were operated in florida or puerto rico at the time of the rupture and for the majority of their service life, and were equipped with inflators produced by takata, a tier-one supplier of automotive air bag systems.During the course of pe14-016, odi determined that five additional vehicle manufacturers used inflators of a similar design and vintage also supplied by takata. No evidence of field failures was found in vehicles produced by these five additional manufacturers.Nonetheless, at odis insistence, all 10 vehicle manufacturers initiated a regional recall within approximately two weeks of the opening of the investigation. The regions recalled initially included florida, puerto rico, hawaii, and the u.S. Virgin islands, areas with high absolute humidity and climatic conditions believed to be a significant factor in the inflator ruptures. As part of the recall actions, inflators removed from remedied vehicles are to be returned to takata for testing.Takatas initial test results on passenger inflators from remedied vehicles indicated a much higher than anticipated rupture frequency for inflators returned from florida.Accordingly odi requested all 10 manufacturers expand the regional recalls for passenger inflators to include other geographic areas where high absolute humidity conditions exist, including the gulf states and other coastal areas.Takatas testing of the passenger inflators to date continues to indicate this geographic area as having the highest risk, with no ruptures occurring from inflators returned from outside the expanded recall regions.During pe14-016 four additional passenger inflator field events occurred, all in vehicles from the same expanded geographic region. Also during pe14-016 four additional driver inflator field events occurred including two in vehicles from regions not known for high absolute humidity, specifically california and north carolina.Accordingly, odi requested all five of the affected vehicle manufacturers currently using the subject takata driver inflators expand to nationwide recalls.Significantly, neither of the affected vehicle manufacturers or takata provided any explanation to account for these two driver air bag inflator ruptures outside the area of high absolute humidity.Takata testing of returned driver inflators indicates a lower rupture frequency as compared to passenger inflator testing. All test ruptures reported by takata to date have occurred on inflators returned from high absolute humidity areas. The investigation now includes all manufacturers and vehicles known to be affected at this time.Odis investigation will focus on, among other things, root cause analysis, other potential defect consequences, identification of affected vehicles scope, and adequacy of the remedy. The five odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification numbers: 10537899, 10568848, 10585224, 10605877, 10651492

My car has an active recall for a trailer wiring harness. I have had the harness inspected by my dealer four times, and they claim it is not a factory-installed harness, despite it being in your database. The harness was on the car when i purchased it. I cannot explain why it is different than the recalled wiring harness. I had a trailer hitch added to my vehicle shortly after purchase, but the shop did not add a wiring harness because one was already on the car. However, i use the hitch only to attach a bike rack. I have never hauled a trailer with this vehicle, and feel there is therefore no safety hazard. Please remove my vehicle from your recall records. The recalled wiring harness apparently was never installed on my vehicle.

At 118,000 miles the engine in my 2010 honda element suffered a catastrophic engine failure. After the engine was removed, it showed that a piston had stopped creating heat significant enough to fuse it to the cylinder. Prior to stopping the only sign of an issue was odd revving during times of consistent speeds (55 mph on a flat surface).

After the rear driver's side seat has been disconnected from the floor latch, it will not reconnect, so the seat will not connect to the floor. There's something wrong with either the latch or the bar on the floor that the latch connects to. This happened when the vehicle was stationary and in my driveway.

Tl* takata recall. The contact owned a 2010 honda element. While driving approximately 20 mph, a second vehicle crashed into the front driver's side of the contact's vehicle. The side curtain air bags failed to deploy. The driver and rear driver side occupant sustained multiple lacerations to the face and neck. The contact indicated that the injuries were caused by debris from the air bag deploying. The vehicle was destroyed and towed. A police report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 84,000.

Brakes very spongy, going almost down to floor, causing a dangerous increase in stopping distance on the highway my mechanic bled the system several times to no avail. Then changed the master cylinder. Still spongy, then the mechanic checked for honda service bulletins regarding this problem. He found a service bulletin that addresses a similar problem on 2007-2008 elements (https://www.Skidmore.Edu/~pdwyer/e/files/campaign_and_recall_bulletins/a10-017.Pdf). There is also a nhtsa recall regarding this problem (nhtsa campaign number: 10v098000 ). I think the problem with my 2010 honda element may be similar to that of the 2007-2008 year models and require a similar recall and fix. I feel this should be investigated because the loss of braking power ability put myself and family in a very dangerous situation.

Honda has been non responsive to nhtsa recall 14v-351. After receiving the recall notice which said the defect could kill or injure me i called the dealership to schedule the replacement of the airbag. Honda refused to schedule an appointment because the parts were back ordered. Since then they have never called or contacted me. Each week i call and they repeat the back order scenario and refuse to make an appointment for the recall. I have tried to contact honda customer service. I have not been able to get through. I hang up after holding in excess of 30 minutes. It appears that they are delaying the recall. The dealer involved is dublin honda, dublin, california.

At this time my car has a recall on its airbag. Recently i received a letter to call my local honda dealer. In calling i was told that the car could not be fixed till december 10th and to call the day before to make sure the part was even available. This is unacceptable as it effects the safety of my entire family. I wish to know what can be done to rectify this matter. *tr

I was mowing my lawn when the lawn-mower kicked up a small (less than 1.5 cm diameter) pebble and threw it into the rear window. The entire window shattered, the sides fell out, the middle cracked all the way across. You could see a small white area(size of a dime) where the impact was, it was nowhere near where the glass fell out. Then about 1 hour later the entire window fell out. Normal glass should have been able to withstand, perhaps chip or crack, but not blow out the entire window. This was defective glass. Also, this is a 2011 honda element, not a 2010, but that was the only option on the site. *tr

2/27/10 purchased new honda element, delivered with windshield chips, dealer subcontracted. New windshield install & gave guarantee of customer satisfaction. Took delivery 3/8/10, noted excessive dash/windshield rattle. Called dealer next day-was asked to 'monitor through summer mos. As rattle would 'settle'. It only got worse. Contacted dealer several times over summer & was assured if problem persisted they would 'stand behind it until it was done right'. Returned. To dealer for 'repair' 3 times 11/15/10, 12/7/10, 12/29/10 (car was repaired three separate times during this visit (kept at dealership 12/29-1/10/11). Broken windshield clips found/replaced on 11/15/10 & 12/29/10 visit, re-padded dash on 12/7/10 visit. Rattle still persistent. Contacted honda corp. Customer service & was told all elements have dash/windshield rattles in cold weather...Honda considers this 'normal'...Dealership now stating they have 'done all they can'. Car had less than 3500 mi. At last service date. Problem has never been corrected and dealer states they are unsure if problem is in the dash, windshield or both areas. Honda customer service states only option available is to take it to another dealership and 'keep trying' to see if another dealer is willing to try to fix the problem. *tr
