  • Recall 2494 [USA]: Loss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash.
Vehicle description: passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and light and medium duty pickup trucks. A switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat, potentially resulting in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, or ignition of the plastic cover material. Switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the "parked" position at the bottom of the windshield. These vehicles were built at the following assembly plants: atlanta plant from 2/11/00 through 7/31/00; chicago plant from 2/14/00 through 8/4/00; kansas city plant from 2/26/00 to 9/4/00; kentucky truck plant from 2/18/00 to 8/31/00; michigan truck plant from 2/23/00 through 8/3/00; norfolk plant from 2/21/00 through 7/27/00; wayne stamping and assembly plant from 2/25/00 through 8/15/00; and wixom plant from 2/15/00 through 8/8/00.
dealers will inspect the date code on the wiper motor. Motors built with the suspect time frame will have the wiper motor gear case cover replaced. Owner notification began august 20, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.

  • Recall 7509 [USA]: The trailer hitch could then separate from the vehicle.
Vehicle description: multi-purpose vehicles. The trailer hitch assembly to the frame attaching bolts could lose the clamp load.
dealers will replace the trailer hitch mounting bolts and nut plates.
owner notification began may 15, 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 2005028 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the speed control deactivation switch may overheat, smoke, or burn, potentially resulting in an underhood fire. The condition may occur either when the vehicle is parked or when it is in operation. Correction: initially as an interim repair, owners will be instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected. As soon as replacement parts are available, owners will be instructed to return to the dealers for installation of a new switch or fused wiring harness.

  • Recall 2004164 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles, ford has issued a scheduled maintenance guide update which specifies that every 20 000 kms, the steering linkage, which includes tie-rod ends, should be inspected. The vehicle owner is asked to place the tie-rod end inspection procedure supplied with this maintenance guide update in the vehicle's glove box for reference and safekeeping. The vehicle owner is to provide the inspection procedure to their repair facility to help properly identify worn tie-rod ends. Performing the vehicle scheduled maintenance, including maintenance inspections, is the responsibility of the vehicle owner. Failure to replace worn tie-rod ends may eventually result in a tie-rod end separation that could adversely affect steering control. If the inspection reveals that a tie-rod end is worn and must be replaced, the repair will be at the owner's expense unless the vehicle is still covered by the basic vehicle warranty, or has an extended service plan coverage that includes these components.

  • Recall 2001204 [Canada]: Other
Certain passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and light and medium duty pickup trucks. A switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat, potentially resulting in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, smoke or, potentially, ignition of the plastic cover material. Switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the "parked" position at the bottom of the windshield. Loss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash. Correction: dealers will inspect the date code on the wiper motor. Motors built with the suspect time frame will have the wiper motor gear case cover replaced.

  • Recall 2000079 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles, the trailer hitch assembly attachment bolts may lose clamp load. If the operator does not notice the condition due to rattle or other looseness of the trailer hitch assembly, there is a potential for the trailer hitch to separate from the vehicle. Correction: trailer hitch mounting bolts and nut plates will be replaced with higher strength mounting bolts and nut plates installed at a higher torque and including an adhesive patch.

  • Recall 2000281 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
On certain vehicles, the daytime running lamp circuit contains a resistor that is corroding. If this occurs, the resistive element can open, resulting in a loss of daytime running lamp (drl) function. If drl function is lost, there may be reduced vehicle conspicuity, which could increase the risk of a vehicle crash. Correction: dealers will install a sealed daytime running lamp resistor.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Spark plug ejection from cylinder head investigation as of 20050922

On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.Odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine. As of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles. In addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.Information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall. In the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine. In one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.In another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.None of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident. As the petitioner noted, and odi¿s analysis showed, it is possible for a spark plug to detach from the engine cylinder threads in the subject vehicles. However, odi¿s analysis of 474 complaints describing such incidents found only a very few alleged any safety-related consequences.None of these showed any evidence of a serious safety consequence.Given the large population and relatively long exposure time of the subject vehicles, the complaint analysis indicates that the risk to motor vehicle safety from the alleged defect is very low.In view of the foregoing, it is unlikely that nhtsa would issue an order for the notification and remedy of the alleged defect at the conclusion of the investigation requested in the petition. Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsa¿s limited resources to best accomplish the agency¿s safety mission, the petition is denied.

  • Speed control deactivation switch fire investigation as of 20041119

In its letter dated january 27, 2005 to odi, ford indicated that it would conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall # 05v-017) to remedy an overheating speed control deactivation switch in approximately 738,490 subject vehicles. The vehicles affected by the recall are certain 2000 model year (my) ford f150, ford expedition and lincoln navigator equipped with speed control and certain 2001 model year f150 supercrew vehicles built through august 7, 2000.Since opening pe04-078, odi has identified other reports of "key off" engine compartment fires in ford vehicles with similar speed control deactivation switches that were not the subject of this preliminary evaluation or fords recall 05v-017.Fords response to the odi information request letter dated december 3, 2004, provided an additional 107 allegations of "key off" engine compartment fires that were also in vehicles not subject to this investigation or included in the ford recall 05v-017.An engineering analysis (ea) is warranted to determine if a safety defect trend exists relating to "key off" engine compartment fires in vehicles outside the scope of this preliminary evaluation.Odi will expand the scope of its investigation at the ea phase to include the 1995 through 2002 model years of the ford f150, ford expedition and lincoln navigator vehicles.

On october 4, 2017 at approximately 3:45 pm, i departed from the sacramento children's home through an adjacent alley traveling through the south bound entrance. As i made the left turn into the alley as i gradually got up to speed my vehicle suddenly began to accelerate. I was startled by the sudden increase of speed and immediate made an attempt to put the vehicle in neutral and shut the vehicle down and apply the brakes. Before i could make the corrections the vehicle had veered off to the left hand side of the alley and struck an oak tree. To my guess the vehicle was traveling at a rate of speed of about 25-30 mph. On impact i slammed into my motorola speaker that was attached to my sun visor and split my head open which required 8 staples to close.

I am the owner of a 2000 navigator. I bought it from a private owner about a year and a half ago. When go to change gears, the vehicle sometimes won't go into gear or if i put it in park, it sometimes won't go. Then i tried to use my emergency brake when parking, which is what i had to resort to due to the vehicle not staying in gear, it also would not work. I went to get my vehicle safety inspection and of course it did not pass. So that prompted my online research as to how to fix the problem. Then i came across the recall in formation for this vehicle and similar models and i see that some recalls were made, but not for my vehicle's year. I was wondering if my vehicle's year model should be included in some of the other recalls because i have the exact same problem but my vehicle is a 2000 and the recall was for a 1998 and so on. Thank you. *tr

Upon driving down the road, with no aaparent preliminary warnings, a screw fell from under my dash onto my feet. I dismissed it as a dash cover screw and kept driving. On jan 14, 2006 , i came out in the am and started my 2000 lincoln navigator. I turned on wiper and started to drive in a few minutes the truck was filled with smoke. I immediately turn it off and got out. I return and started truck turned wipers back on and they worked except for intermittent mode. I then took truck to dealer the next day. They informed me that water leak past the windshield onto the fuse box and gem unit. They would have to replace windshield with a different type. ( not reseal. They said this was common on these trucks. They also needed to replace fuse box and gem total was $1200.00, i contacted ford because why would they have to replace windshield if it was original and not cracked. I was told there is no recall and they could not reimburse me. After loosing 2 other trucks in a 2 year period to fire both fords , i am now extremely annoyed that ford will not acknowledge these problems. I search forums and internet and see that this is common ( windshield leak), why will ford not pay for this. I guess they feel that if they can get away with it then why recall. I have lost 2 trucks because of electrical problems now i have a 3rd truck with similar problems. Force ford to recall or fix these problems at their expense. I have been a mechanic for 15 years and understand a recall like this to replace windshields would be expensive but i the consumer can not keep buying trucks. *nm

I have experienced 2 blowouts on this set of tires. On inspection, the service rep (for the auto dealer, marshall bros.) found a third tire that was about to separate in much the same way. I just thought it was time to buy new tires. I went to my local goodyear dealer to replace the old tires. He told me they were still in very good shape, i did not need new tires. He believed that the one that had blown out was defective. What concerns me most were the comments made by both the lincoln service rep & the independent goodyear dealer. Thay both stated that the expeditions, navigators & explorers are extremely rough on tires. The lincoln service representative showed me an expedition that he was changing out all the tires- it was a 2001 expedition with less than 30,000 miles on the tires. This concerns me...In addition, marshall bros. Lincoln-mercury would not honor the warranty on the tires. I was told i would have to deal with the manufacturer. The continental mfr. Is very hard to locate. I'm still trying. I have possession of the most recent 2 failed tires @ home. The first blow-out was @ approximately 55mph when the car had 12,000 miles on it. Thank you. P.S. The owner of the vehicle is my father. He gave me the vehicle to drive this past december. He will verify or sign this report if needed.*ak

I experience what i believe was a tread separation in the tire while traveling on i 15 in arizona, on the way to las vegas. As the tire noise and vibration increased, i began to let off the gas, preparing to slow the vehicle down, when the tire blew out, and then coasted to a stop along the curved interstate highway. Upon inspection of the tire, it was noted that both sidewalls had separated from the tread, and the vehicle had run a short distance on the aluminum wheel. That friday afternoon we called continental's customer service number, but they were closed until monday. The ford dealer in grand junction advised us to see a linclondealer in las vegas. The desert lincoln dealer 702-257-0687 (russ schoenbeck) said that we would have to talk to a continental tire dealer because lincoln did not warranty the tires on the 2000 navigator, but did now warrant the tires on the 2001 navigator. He said that he has seen three other 17 inch tire failures on the navigators, one with massive tread speration that damaged the customers sheetmetal. The customer, a broker, convinced continental to repair the sheet metal on his vehicle. I had the tire replaced at discount tire in las vegas 702-451-1453 and had to pay full price for a new tire because i would not let discount tire have the damaged tire, in case i had to prove the faulty tire caused the wheel to my vehicle. I have the tire in my possession. If you feel that you would like to inspect it, please get in touch with me propmtly. I did report the tire problem to ford motor company1-800-521-4140 expressing my concerns that the tire is dangerous and should be recalled. She said that ford does not warrant the tires. I said that the tire is not fit for use on the vehicle, and there is an issue with "fitness for purpose" when ford sold me the vehicle with the tires installed (dot number: ad9c448090 tiresize: p255/75r17)
