Vehicle has a recall on replacement of fuel tank. Mercedes benz dealer did not want to honor the recall. When i fill car up with gas it leaks out of the tank and on the ground. Mercedes-benz dealer said i missed the time for the recall. I went to the dealership before the recall ended in 2019 spoke with the service advisor at the mckinney mercedes-benz dealership and i informed him the car was not drivable due to the braking system failure call the spc hydraulic pump. Turns out that is also a recall that is widely known. At that time the car was not drivable and then the pandemic hit so there was no need to take it up there at the time due to covid. Mercedes benz should honor this since this is a safety issue that could lead to a deadly situation if not addressed. They have been deceptive by marking this is an extended warranty issue and not a safety recall issue. They pretty much told me since i don't have my car worked on at the dealership, they don't want to help me in this situation. They mentioned had the car been serviced at the dealership and not at the independent shoo that i used i may have had a better chance at them covering the charges for this tank replacement.

The problem with my vehicle is that with its current tcm( transmission control module) in a 722.9 transmission, the conductor plate that holds the sensors in place become defective and creates a problem in which the transmission gets stuck in 2nd gear. This causes a major problem driving on road ways that are +45mph because the vehicle cannot drive over 25mph further causing more problems that may actually freeze up the engine causing the car to stop. If the car is stopped and begins to go again, the rmp's can go very high without any power or motion in the vehicle. This has happened to 2 of my personal friends already with the 722.9 transmission. In particular the conductor plate or valve body was corrupted and caused the vehicle to fail. I am reporting this because the part can fail anytime during operation of the vehicle and is a safety issue to the driver and others around when this may occur. Many other owners (i've read online) with this 722.9 transmission conductor plate fault is also frustrated by the fact that not only mercedes-benz doesn't allow for a consumer to buy the part but many warranties are voided with this fault. My vehicle (mercedes-benz e500 2004) also is only at 56,000 miles on the speedometer. Considering the mileage, this is a problem that seems to be premature due to the fact that the vehicle has been serviced by a mercedes-benz dealer but has no service for the very commonly faulted part.

Airmatic suspension dropped while driving on the highway. Red light warning flashed that vehicle was low. Tried to raise car but it would not raise. Car was very close to ground and would not raise..Began looking up, if other same models as ours have this problem and they do. Read several consumers compliants/ concerns who also own a mercedes benz they seem to have this similar problem. It's very expensive to fix at a dearlership. Looks like this vehicle may have a problem/defect with their airmatic suspension and it is very dangerous driving on the highway unknowing that your vehicle is dropping to ground. This really needs to be investigated to see if there is a problem with their airmatic suspension before someone gets hurt or killed while driving.

While i was driving down the road, the brakes completely failed. There was a sudden 100% pressure loss in the brake pedal. I was less than 20 ft from getting on the highway. Had this happened to me while i was on the highway, i would have met with a tragic accident. This car only has 92,392 miles. It is a 1-owner with all maintenance and services done only by mercedes dealer and authorized repair facilities. The vehicle is 100% upto date on all repairs and maintenance and there is absolutely no reason for such failure. Upon further investigation, it was found there are other mercedes benz users experiencing the same issue. Not only will i ever buy a mercedes benz again, but i will never ride in a mercedes benz product for the sake of my safety!!! *tr

This complaint relates to a prior government investigation and related extension of warranty. The government investigation determined leaks could occur from the gas tank pressure sensor, the outlet of the gas tank filling limiter valve and at the top of the fuel pump. Determined leaks could occur from the gas tank pressure sensor, the outlet of the gas tank filling limiter valve and at the top of the fuel pump. As a result, benz extended its warranty to 15 years on gas tank components in 2003-2009 e-class vehicles and 2006-2011 cls-class vehicles. Consistent with the problem, my fuel pump failed last week; the car would not start. I had the car towed to oakland mercedes for service under the warranty. Benz was notified and inspected the car last wednesday. The dealer took possession on friday. I have called the service dept many times to learn status of the car. Benz tells me the car still has not even been assigned a service advisor. They refuse to give me any information re the status of my car and when it will be repaired. This amounts to a refusal to fulfill their promises given upon the discovery of their faulty fuel tanks.

We had just stopped the vehicle in a parking space at a grccery. As we exited the vehicle and were walkng away from it we heard a loud pop as if a tire had a blown. We looked around but did not notice any low tire from loss of air. When i started the vehicle i noticed the red warning light on the dash instrument panel "stop, car too low!" i turned the steering wheel to see if the wheel/tire would rub against the wheel well and it did not, so we drove home which was only one mile. I parked the vehicle in the garage. After reading a nmber of other similar complaints, it appears this malfunction should be a manufacturer recall for a deficient part or engineering design flaw for the malfunction.

Turning into a shopping center when all of a sudden my brakes totally went out. I had just a tiny bit of breaks and couldn't stop to make the turn into the shopping center safely. I had to go into the shopping center parking lot and see what happens. What had happened was my spc brakes went out on my mercedes and i had to get it towed to my mechanic to get it repaired. This was scary as heck sense if i was on the freeway i'm going freeway speeds i probably would have crashed , but since i was slow enough and was able to maneuver i didn't crash. They're definitely should be a recall for this spc braking system.

The cars brakes just quit without any warning which i was driving, as described below. This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. I have sent a copy of the mercedes service bulletin s142.46-p-0012a which addresses this issue. Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them at the dealer's expense. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed. *tr

Benz2004 e500.Original owner/55k miles.Driving back from a long road trip, the "service brake" message came on.Thinking it was just the pads, thought we could reach home.Later, we realized what a dangerous thing we had done, by driving a car with sbc pump failure. We could have taken off a bridge or thrown into a swamp or put someone else in danger. This problem cannot be fixed at any auto shop, it has to be towed to the dealer, from wherever you are stuck and only dealer can fix it.Dealer said mfr, will not assist in repair because it is past 10 years. And we have to pay $2350. There were two recalls in 2004/05 regarding sbc pump, but mercedes benz has conveniently designed a 10 year warranty to their advantage and dealers advantage. When they know all cars equipped with it, is guaranteed to fail in 10 -15 years and in some cases, even before that.It was not court ordered or govt. Ordered, but set up by them for them.Once there was a recall, there should have been lifetime warranty on these. It is a safety issue.Tried negotiating with mbusa to reimburse, but they refused. And they refused to give me in writing about the refusal or anything related. After paying to fix it, they don't even install a new unit, they install a re manufactured unit. They threaten you with core charges for the old part and recycle again for the next customer. When i left the dealer ship, i had this feeling like i was set up and mugged by benz/dealer, since they were expecting it.Since they have discontinued sbc pump, they know it has a problem, but they never admit it.When they call back they don't even leave message with any substance. They expect you call back and they will deny it over the phone or do some tap dancing. They will stone wall you, play dump or talk to you like a 5th grader. They are so guilty that they try to cover every track and watch what they say, what they do and what they write. *tr

While traveling along a 2 lane highway in a snow storm, the sbc pump failed and caused the abs to fail as well as the brakes to barely work. The subsequent skid forced a very close call with a fully laden logging truck, and could have easily been a fatal accident were it not for good luck. Under nhtsa recall 2004 050014, and recall campaign 2005070007 apr06 by mercedes, the sbc pump failure is a known safety issue. The local mercedes benz has offered to sell me a new one for $1700 as mercedes benz usa is not willing to replace this failed part under the recall as they only offer a 10 year window. Isn't a safety recall a recall? Brakes are a vital aspect of safety... *tr

I purchased my car used at 132000 miles. This was a pre existing condition that dealer didn't mention anything about, because the next day i filled the tank as it was sold to me with less than 1/4 tank, now i know why, i got a very strong odor of gas that filled my garage and smelled inside the car as well. This happens every time i fill the tank. It also sets a check engine light. Dealership i purchased the car from (not a mercedes benz dealership) refuses any responsibility for the problem. Check engine light code is "evaporative emission leak detected (small leak)". Also because of the issue my gas light will randomly start blinking and when i accelerate the center display beeps lights up red and said check fuel cap. Fuel cap is fine, i think it's related to the leak.

I had to replace all the associated parts (cable harness, auxiliary pump, bracket, seal ring, etc. Parts: $710.13 and labor: $496.80 = 1206.93. This issue should be reviewed as a manufacturer defect. I have a fuel leak on the left side of my fuel tank. The fumes are so strong that i cannot operate the vehicle due the amount of fuel that settles on top of the pump/ regulator access outlet. The stream is emitting from the area of leakage so quickly that it takes about a minute to puddle and drip to the ground. The danger of a metal object being picked up by a tire and caught up on a piece of metal under my vehicle, at that location, would create a spark that would surely cause a blazing fire to erupt. Also, there is the danger of a passerby tossing a cigarette out of his/ her window, being caught up by the wind and sucked underneath my car, causing a fire. *tr

While my wife was driving the vehicle at approximately 45 mph the dash warning system turned bright red with the following message, brake malfunction, stop the vehicle. She tried to apply the brakes but the brake system had completely failed, she had no brakes. She let off the accelerator to help slow the vehicle as she slowed down she pulled onto the shoulder of the road and the slowly applied the emergency brake to bring the vehicle to a stop and shifted it into park. She then shut the vehicle off and cycled the ignition key. There was no longer the red warning light or message displayed and when testing the brakes everything was functioning normal again. She then slowly drove the vehicle home. I then researched the symptoms online and found many complaints for this exact complaint. I found where the sbc (sensotronic brake control) unit had a safety recall (2005070007) along with an extended warranty of 10 years with unlimited mileage. I then contacted mbusa customer service and was advised to take the vehicle to my local mb dealer. The vehicle was taken to the mb dealer on 7/14/14 to be checked. The dealer service adviser advise that the sbc unit was defective and needed to be replaced. My vehicles in service date is 4/20/04, so it is now past the 10 year warranty by 2 1/2 months. I then contacted mbusa for post warranty review on 7/15/14. On my way back from virginia, after parking my 2004 e500 benz car at the welcome center in wilmington, delaware, for a break, a big popping noise was heard from the front of the car. I thought it was a flat tire, but i saw the front of the car low (almost touch the ground) the only thing is that the passenger side was not as much low as the driver side. Then when i started the car engine, from the car control panel, i received the following error message: "stop, the car is too low to drive" as a result, i had to get the car towed to my home for nearly $500.00. This is the 3rd time i have experience this air suspension issue; and every time that happened, i had to have the car towed. The two previous time the issue happened, the car was under the extended warranty; and i did not to pay any out of pocket money to get the issue fixed. Now that the car no longer under any extended warranty, i know it's going to cost me a lot of money to get the issue fixed by the dealer. Based on many reports i have read from people who experienced the same problem, i, as they do, strongly believe mercedes should have a recall to address this issue. As it is commonly agreed, the car is too expensive to have to pay for this constant headache that comes when it wants to with no warning. Luckily for me, during the time of this recent incident, my car was not being driven. Otherwise, i have no doubt in my mind that the car would go out of control and thus cause an accident. Please help to get this issue address by mercedes benz company before someone get hurt or die because of this problem. *tr

This is very dangerous not only the inhalation of the fumes & gas leaking in a car with electrical wiring & parts that get extremely hot. I don't understand why there hasn't been a recall to fix this since mercedes are aware that the car was manufactured properly. Why should we have to pay to repair poor manufactured products that put our lives in danger. *tr

For the past several months after filling the vehicle a strong gas smell/fumes are present in the vehicle. The smell/fumes subside when approximately 1/4 of the fuel in the tank has been used. On friday may 31st 2013 the vehicle was filled with fuel. Parked the vehicle in the garage friday night and was knocked over by gas smell/fumes on saturday morning, june 1st 2013. The vehicle was parked outside overnight. After researching the issue, i found fuel around the sending unit under the drive side back seat. The fuel was removed and the sending unit cleaned. The sending unit was observed see if a leak could be detected on the unit. The leak is at the top part of the sending unit. The part where the small wire plug is attached to the sending unit. It looks like this part is "glued" to the body of the sending unit. Short term fix is to only fill the fuel tank half way. This hazard, if not rectified by the manufacture makes mine and all other vehicles unsafe and un-sellable on the used car market.

I have noticed strong gasoline odors emanating from my car after refueling. I purchased a new mercedes benz gas cap and installed it. Filled the gas tank and gasoline odor was still very strong. I do not 'top off' when refueling. Researched issue online at benzworld.Org and discovered that the gas odor issue i am experiencing may be related to a problem being seen in numerous mercedes benz e-model vehicles. As advised by the other owners having this issue i detached the rear seat cushion from the car and removed the bolts from the circular access panel that covers a portion of the fuel tank on the driver's side of the vehicle. In the depression on top of the gas tank where numerous electrical wires attach to the fuel pump i found a significant quantity of raw gasoline pooled. This presents a very unsafe situation and i am no longer willing to park the vehicle in my garage due to the potential fire hazard. The pooling of raw gasoline also represents an environmental issue due to the evaporation and creation of toxic fumes. I understand that mercedes benz dealers are demanding $2,000. Or more to rectify the problem by removing and replacing the gas tanks in impacted vehicles. I feel that the manufacturer of this defective component should be held responsible to recall it and replace it. I understand that the nhtsa's current investigation action no. After filling my car with fuel, i have notice a strong odor of gas fumes in my garage which smells throughout my entire home and inside my car. But i don't see any leaks on the floor. After the gas tank drops to 3/4 of a tank, the smell of fumes goes away. This has been going on for a very long time. I believe this is a safety issue and that mercedes should repair it asap. Thanks. Also the fuel cap sensor constantly stays blinking as if there is something wrong with the connection to the fuel tank opening, every time i re fuel. I have even had the fuel cap replaced with a new one and the sensor in the car still comes on every day. *tr

Car was not moving when we noticed a strong odor of gasoline coming from the rear seat area, when we pulled into our garage the odor was so strong we moved the car to the outside to prevent a possible fire in our home, i called the dealer and the service manager immediately told me that he thought the gas tank sender/sensor was leaking and possibly that both sensors were leaking and possibly the tank. He also told me that gasoline could be pooling on top of the gas tank causing the odor. He later called me and confirmed that all of the above had happened and could be repaired for approximately $3250.00 i ask if this was a recurring problem on this model he said that there were no recalls or warning but they had seen this problem before. I then went on line and found a lot of blogs describing my problem almost identically. In my opinion this is a serious defect in the construction of this car and could and probably will cause serious injury and possibly death to some one riding in this model. I believe there is enough evidence in the recurring blogs that mercedes is quite aware of this serious safety problem and are probably ignoring this very expensive fix, please do not ignore this complaint until someone or several are hurt or killed. *tr

After refueling, fuel fumes were emitted into the vehicle and garage where parked. Extremely overwhelming smell and danger obvious. Taken to mechanic and fuel tank has leak at sensor and sending unit seals. The dealer has refused to repair as no recall issued. Owner found many others with exact same issue on this model series and year online and with mechanics experience. Strong potential for imminent fire hazard. Gasoline fumes are hazardous to vehicle passengers, with numerous medical issues noted in research. Strong enough in cabin to cause dizziness, illness or loss of consciousness. *tr

There is a strong fuel smell in the vehicle after filling up gas tank. Mercedes benz dealer found the issue associated to left side fuel sending unit, which seem to be a recurrent issue with this model in mercedes. Dealer requires $875.34 to fix the issue. I have contacted mbusa to see if they can help with this repair. In 2008 there was a voluntary recall #2008-020001,on some e and cls class for 03-06 vehicles, however i was told my car vin is not part of this recall. Web forums of mercedes benz owners are filled with same complaint for all e class models with chassis w211. Please investigate this issue. I understand there is an open nhtsa case pe12-001 that may be related to my complaint. Thank you for your prompt attention. This is my second mercedes w211 model vehicle with the same issue. *tr

The fuel tank cannot be filled up completely. Doing so causes the car to smell like gasoline. There seems to be a fuel leak on the tank which causes the gasoline to spill. The odor comes mostly from the back seat of the car. If the tank is filled, the car will have the gasoline odor for weeks even with the windows left open. This is quite dangerous in many ways since i have an infant who is required by law to sit in the backseat rear faced. *tr

We purchased this vehicle recently from a private seller. The first time we filled up the tank, we noticed a very strong gasoline odor. I called the seller and he told me that the only way to avoid that is by not topping off the tank. I figured this wasn't normal, so i started doing some research. Turns out mercedes e class vehicles have a problem with the fuel seal. In fact, there was a recall for this problem, but the local mercedes dealer does not want to honor it because they say it is only for the amg models. But my model has the same problem. Then, upon further investigation, i found that a class action lawsuit against mercedes was being filed this year for the same exact issue concerning e class vehicles from 2003-2009. *tr

Noticed a strong gasoline smell in my garage and inside my vehicle. Also noticed that my left rear passenger seat was discolored with dark yellow staining. Check engine light appeared on car and took to local mercedes-benz dealer to check problem and was told that the fuel sending unit had failed and that raw fuel was leaking in passenger compartment causing the gasoline odor and staining to upholstery. Was strongly urged by service advisor at mercedes-benz to replace the sending unit "anytime you're leaking fuel that's a safety issue". Had sending unit replaced as advised and was told to keep windows down to air the car of gasoline fumes. Mercedes- benz attempted to clean upholstery however this was unsuccessful and will likely need to be replaced. *tr

Upon getting out of my vehicle, the drivers side front fender was lowered down to the top of the tire. A strong gas smell in the passenger cabin as well as outside driver side passenger door and the check engine light prompted me to take the car to a local dealer. After diagnostic test, dealer indicated there was a leaking fuel purge valve and shut off valve. After a $1,600 quote, i requested they not do the work so i could take it for a second opinion. Was called back later that day and informed of a "miscommunication" and that the car was fixed with a $1,600 bill awaiting me. I worked out a payment agreement with the dealer and never took the car back despite intermittent gas smells in and outside the car and check engine light going on and off. The check engine light came back on for good less than 12 months later. Took car to another local shop where i was told one of the fuel pumps needed to be replaced. $600 later, and 4 more trips back to the shop, the check engine light and strong gas fumes still permeate the car. Took it to shop #3 today and was told there is a crack in the fuel tank. The quote is $1,700. I don't trust the dealer, and believe that the fuel pump replace by shop #2 was not the issue. It appears as if it's been the fuel tank all along. This is clearly a defect in the part as the car has never been in an accident and has less than 70k miles on it currently. It's a safety hazard and with two children, i don't have a choice but to fix the problem. Please let me know if there is anything additional necessary to help conclude this investigation. I'm hoping there will be recourse with mbusa to reimburse it's customers for the faulty part replacement and labor costs. Thank you. *tr

Catastrophic failure of front left suspension strut on a 2004 mercedes e500 station wagon. The car has an air ride system which maintains the right height of all four corners of the car. It has been serviced regularly by mercedes since purchase. The air bladder inside the strut blew out while parked in front of my home. I starting smelling a gassy smell seeping into my house at night and after a few days concluded in had to be coming from the attached garage and subsequently after eliminating all other variables i narrowed it down to the car. I parked it outside for a couple of nights and the smell ceased in the house and garage. I then took the vehicle to pompano mercedes to have them check it out and was informed my seals were bad/leaking at the fuel line connections, so without a choice i had them repaired at a cost of $968.21 on 9/13/2010. This resolved the problem for about 2 months, then the gassy smell returned. I took the car back to pompano mercedes again and explained that i had the car had the same symptoms of a gassy smell. They checked out the vehicle and informed me at this time i had a different fuel leak and that would require them to replace the entire gas tank and internal fuel pumps and seals at a cost of $3000 this time. Quite unhappy with this diagnosis considering i was just there 2 months prior and thought they had repaired the problem only to find out now it was more encompassing than their first attempt at a fix and it was going to cost a boatload of money to re-repair the problem as i was just over the 50k warranty to boot. With the news of the extended warranty settlement at this time i strongly feel my vehicle issues are as described in the class action suit and i should be entitled to reimbursement for the $968.21 i spent at mercedes discretion. *tr

Benz e500 2004 (54k miles) safety issue1: nov 2008(36k miles), the car used to lose power and shut down while driving with all the lights blinking on the dash board. But i was able to break ansdstop . Sometimes it started back on and sometimes it did not.Dealer replaced the crankshaft sensor and the sender unit. Had to pay the bill of $600 plus towing. They did not inspect other safety issues like the sbc pump or let me know about the 10 year warranty. Neither did they tell me if sbc pump failure or its malfunction has any impact on other parts of the car. Safety issue 2: jan 6th 2015.(refer to complaint #10676289)sbc pump failed during a long road trip and thinking it was just brake pads, could have been fatal. Dealer/mb refused any assistance in repairs. Cost us $2200. When the dealer refused to look at the sbc pump before the warranty expired and they know it is going to fail, customer is in a very uncomfortable position with safety aspect, huge repair costs involved and possible impact on other parts and situations. They designed a warranty on this programmable unit that is programmed to lend certain cycles or service. Mercedes benz has turned this major defect into a money making opportunity lately. They are installing reman units with a high repair cost of $2000-3000. Sometimes, more than the worth of the car. Regulators should revisit the case and have them provide life time warranty on this major flaw and maybe more. When there were two recalls just a year after it was bought, how can they get away with a 10 year warranty and a huge repair cost. Since they have more lawyers than any common man, only regulators can help the citizens and protect their interests and safety. *tr

There has been a strong gasoline smell following a tank fill that fills the garage with gasoline fumes. This problem has been occurring for at least the last 5 years. I entered 1/1/2009 on the form data as an approximate begin date. The fuel smell can be detected in the vehicle at times, but is extremely strong immediately after fill-up. An internet search has revealed that this is a common problem on all mercedes e class models from 2003-2009. I have asked continually about this problem at the mercedes dealer, now mercedes of natick, formerly foreign motors west in natick, massachusetts. Service personnel have denied that there was/is any pattern or problem and indicated that this problem seemed to affect my car only. Only recently have they indicated that at times they have had to replace the fuel tank and both sending units at an out of pocket cost of $850 -$2000. All this for a problem that current research indicates that mercedes has known about for more than 7 years. A class action lawsuit was filed in texas in 2012 for this exact problem. The dealer has offered no financial assistance in this repair, but did indicate that after i paid for the repair, that they would try to contact mercedes benz for assistance. While nice, this still puts the entire financial burden on me with only a hope that assistance would come later. So far i have declined the repair. While some vehicles were included under a voluntary recall in 2008, my vehicle was not one of them. In fact, i have never been contacted by mercedes benz for this problem. I asked about this issue only 2 weeks ago, late june 2014, and was told that there is no factory repair campaign or recall at this time. This morning i removed the bench portion of the rear seat, folded back the insulating pad and removed the metal access plate for the left side fuel sending/fuel pump unit. Gas was visible. *tr

I took the car to the mercedes dealer, told them of the battery dyeing problem and their diagnosis was the same, "audio gateway". I paid the dealer to fix the problem and they stated that replaced the part. The total cost was approx. $1,258.00, which included labor. *tr

Driving at about 60 mph and start decelerating to turn and the transmission shifted out of gear or to first gear the initial time. I had to pull over, cut the car off completely and then re-start the vehicle for it to shift correctly. Went about a month and it happened again. At first i thought that i had done something, but it started happening more often like once a week and then daily. I was traveling at one time on i-64 and decelerated a bit to go through the hampton tunnel and realized that it happened again as i was accelerating at the end of the tunnel. Once again, i had to pull over, shut the vehicle off and restart it for the transmission to reset. It also happened at traffic lights. One time while my son and i were riding we actually felt the car jolt as it shifted out of the proper gear. The last time it happened i was on busy rt. 29 right at rush hour. I stopped at a light and when the light changed green i stepped on the gas to accelerate and all i could hear was the engine revving. I tried the usual, cutting the vehicle off and restarting it, but this time the transmission didn't reset itself at all and i ended up getting towed to a shop. My car is in the shop now and the transmission is being replaced. The car will go when it happens, but it will not shift from first gear at all. I just looked at a couple sites online and see where at least three other people had this same issue. I also found a tsb (technical service bulletin) on the allworldauto.Com website, for transmissions downshifting for the mercedes benz e class. *tr

I own a mercedes-benz e500 bought new in 2004. 3 days ago i was driving the vehicle at about 35 miles an hour and car stalled and came to an abrupt stop in the middle of the road with no warning. I could not start the engine back for about 5 minutes. Luckily there were no other vehicles behind me, which would have hit me from behind. I later towed the car to the mercedes service station. They reported it as an electircal failure due to failing of the crankshaft position sensor. They have replaced the faulty sensor and the car is running ok now. I am still wondering why did the car come to an abrupt stop and did not allow me to coast the car to the side of the road, which should have been the backup safety mechanism in a failure like this to avoid a major accident. I am worried whether there is a design fault in this vehicle that did not allow that back up mechanism to kick-in. My service advisor says this fault is unlikely to recur. I feel that the sensors can fail at any time and the vehicle should have a safety mechanism to avoid abrrupt stops like this. If i was on a free way this would have created a major accident with so many vehicles piled up on top of me! My car has done only 40,000 miles within the last 4 years. It has new tires, a new battery and new brakes -all taken care of by the mercedes dealer at my last service about 2 weeks ago.

On 12/6/07 my family was involved in a head on collision that caused both front airbags to deploy. My concern is regarding the passenger airbag that should not have deployed according to the dashboard console. When my 7 year old daughter is in the passenger seat the ?Passenger air bag off? Light stayed on and this was the only reason we let her ride in the front passenger seat. Unfortunately in this accident the airbag deployed which caused minor head injuries. I contacted mercedes benz of sacramento to look into this and they indicated that if the light indicated the airbag was off, the airbag should not have deployed. They also indicated that the airbag should not have deployed if the passenger weighed less than 60 lbs. In this situation the passenger weighed approximately 50 lbs. I asked mercedes benz to check the vehicle for defects, but i was told that they did not have equipment to check the car in the field. I would have to bring the car into the dealership to be checked. Unfortunately the vehicle is no longer drivable and was considered a total loss by my insurance company so i am no longer the legal owner. My car picked up a nail on the highway and it blew a round hole about the size of a quarter in the tire rim. These are aluminum alloy low profile rims that came with my e500 2004 mercedes benz as standard equipment. Two months later i had a new set of tires put on the car and the dealer told me that two more rims were bent. I am an experienced driver (over 1.5 million miles of driving experience) and i have never had a rim go bad. Suddenly i have three rims go bad. I did not hit any pot holes or curbs or any thing other than normal bumpy roads. The dealer said i would have to pay for new rims and mounting. I complained to m b and their answer has been that the problem was caused by road hazard. I said that i know that the road had something to do with it but that this is not an excuse for using materials that obviously cannot take the strain of reasonable driving. Anecdotally i can tell you that a close friend is driving an s500 with the same low profile tire and he too has had to replace three wheels over a period of two years. I feel certain that it is the composition of the rim which is at fault since it cannot stand up to the road surface problems as well as a rim of the same material that is not of the low profile design. *nm
