• Recall 41164 [USA]: If this occurs, the tire may rupture resulting in a rapid air loss, which could result in a crash.
  On certain passenger vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia, the front coil springs could fracture due to corrosion associated with salt used on the roadways during the winter. A fractured spring could move past the spring seat and contact a front tire.
  dealers will install protective spring shields. In addition, ford is extending the warranty coverage of the front coil springs in all other states, for fracture only, up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. If the vehicle has already accumulated more than 150,000 miles, this coverage will last until july 31, 2005. If either front coil spring fractures, dealers will replace both front springs at no charge to the owner. An interim notice was sent to owners on august 2, 2004. Parts are now available for the 2000-2001 my vehicles and owners were sent a letter on january 10, 2005, advising them to bring in their vehicles for repair parts are expected to be available for the 1999 my vehicles by the end of february 2005 and owners of these vehicles will be notified then. • Recall 9805 [USA]: If the mechanism malfunctions and does not allow the webbing to be extracted, the lap and shoulder belt could not be worn by a vehicle occupant. in the event that the mechanism does not allow the alr mode to be engaged, the operator may be unable to properly install a child seat in that seating position.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The seat belt retractor may have a pin shaft in the switchable elr/alr mechanism that is incorrectly formed. In some circumstances, the switching mechanism could become nonfunctional, preventing the seat belt webbing from being extracted from the retractor. It is also possible that malfunction of the mechanism could prevent the belt from being switched into the alr mode. The elr mechanism is not affected by this condition.
  dealers will inspect the lap and shoulder belt assemblies. Assemblies with julian date codes of 200 through 223 are suspect and will be replaced.

• Recall 11852 [USA]: Transmission fluid leakage onto the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter can result in a fire.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equpped with the "california" emissions package. An incorrect transmission oil cooler line was installed. The line contacts the anti-lock braking system module support bracket and over time, can wear and develop a leak.

• Recall 10495 [USA]: If this condition occurs, the engine may not fully return to idle. also, the insulator may not stay in the intended location and could interfere with the accelerator cable.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. A dash insulator retainer clip was not fully assembled to the accelerator cable dash fitting. The clip can disengage from the accelerator cable and fall into the accelerator pedal arm pivot area.
  dealers will inspect these vehicles to ensure proper installation of the accelerator cable clip, and re-install if needed.

• Recall 2004252 [Canada]: Suspension
  On certain vehicles, the front coil springs may fracture when operated in high corrosion areas (where salt is used on the roadways in winter). The potential for corrosion causing a spring to fracture increases with the number of kilometres and years in service on the vehicle. A fractured spring could move past the spring seat and contact a front tire causing a rupture resulting in a rapid air loss. Correction: for vehicles sold in or are currently registered in the provinces of ontario, quebec, new brunswick, prince edward island, nova scotia, newfoundland and labrador, dealers will install protective spring shields as specified in recall campaign 04s17. In addition, ford will notify nationwide all 1999 to 2001 taurus and sable owners of a customer satisfaction program 04m04 in which ford will provide additional repair coverage for replacement of fractured front coil springs for a period of 10 years from the original date of sale of the vehicle, or up to 240 000 kilometres, whichever occurs first.

• Recall 1999176 [Canada]: Seats and restraints
  On certain vehicles, the seat belt retractor in certain seating positions may have a pin shaft in the switchable elr/alr(emergency locking retractor/automatic locking retractor) mechanism that is incorrectly formed. In some circumstances, the switching mechanism could become non-functional, which could prevent the seat belt webbing from being extracted from the retractor. Correction: affected vehicles will be inspected and suspect lap and shoulder belt assemblies will be replaced.

• Recall 1998173 [Canada]: Seats and restraints
  These vehicles may have a front seat belt buckle attaching stud that may have been improperly heat treated. This heat treating may have resulted in cracks developing in the stud. If the stud is cracked, there is the potential for less than the intended level of occupant restraint in the event of a vehicle crash. Correction: seat belt buckle mounting bracket and stud assembly will be replaced on affected vehicles.

• Recall 1998182 [Canada]: Structure
  The dash insulator retainer may not have been fully engaged. The retainer may disengage, and in some cases it could become lodged above the accelerator pedal pivot. This could prevent the engine from fully returning to idle. Correction: vehicles will be inspected for proper installation of the dash insulator retainer and re-install if required.

  Odi possesses 130 vehicle owners questionnaires (voq) alleging front suspension coil spring failure in the subject (model year 1999-2000) vehicles.An additional 11 voqs concerning my 2001 vehicles have been found, bringing the total to 141.More than 75% of these reports allege that the broken spring damaged or punctured the adjacent tire.All of these reports originated in the salt belt states located in the northeast quadrant of the united states and canada.Ford will conduct a safety recall (04v-332) covering vehicles soldor currently registered in connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia, to install spring shields in my 1999-2001 taurus/sable vehicles to prevent a fractured spring from damaging the nearby tire.Ford will additionally notify owners of all my 1999-2001 taurus/sable vehicles that warranty coverage for spring fractures has been extended to 10 years of age or 150,000 miles.Odi analyzed ford¿s warranty and complaint data and found that 99% of the spring fractures occurred in the states covered by the recall.The other incidents occurred in the states of florida, north carolina, texas, alabama, and georgia.In view of the coverage of the spring failures by the recall campaign, odi is closing the preliminary evaluation.Odi will continue to monitor the performance of the subject vehicles throughout the remainder of the country.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 mercury sable wagon. While driving 40 mph, the steering wheel became loose and was unable to control the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact was able to depress the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and then to an independent mechanic who stated that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 149,000. The vin was not available.

While driving the steering wheel became loose and made it very hard to steer almost causing me to have a accident after coming to a stop the steering wheel was off center and very hard to turn had to get car towed.I find this to be a complete rip off because i see numerous complaints of steering problems of the same matter

Rear subframe connection passenger side rusted through due to factory put air conditioner condensate line so that it constantly dumps condensate on this area instead of draining condensate beyond and to the ground. The result is a rusted out severed connection thereby causing the engine and transmission to be held by only three of the four connections needed to safely hold engine and transmission as designed from the factory.

The steering is horible, about 3years ago changed rack appion steering, and just a week ago, put new steering pump on, still.

Even after replacing the second power steering pump , it is horrible turning the steering wheel most of the time. Also, it is noisy while i'm driving it. It had a new rack and pinion on it when i bought it . Parking in a parking lot is awful as it is almost impossible to maneuver around other cars. Turning corners ,sometimes it's okay and other times really hard. Not sure if this complaint belongs here, but heater doesn't work ,either. Feels like a/c is on . Had a friend check it and he is having a hard time figuring it out. Don't know how to answer "date happened" as it has been doing this since i bought it in august.

After rains the car got a wet floor on the passenger side ,no wet spots on roof or windows. It was leaking water from the dash board compartment bottom.While driving ,the heater was on and it started smoking from under the dashboard compartment by passenger side i turned everything off . I took it for repair and now, on may it rained heavy again and it has a puddle in the passenger side again ,same situation as before, water came from inside.Is this a safety hazard? I bought this car on november 2013 ,and i knew too late about the heating system recall ,i don't know if it was ever repaired on that recall.Ford dealer in colorado says there is no way to check it.According to some websites it needs something to have a protection under the wipers vents(cowl) and it is a factory mistake. I have had the heating system repaired 2 times,too expensive for me.I am under employed. I want to know if this is a safety hazard. It is the only way i could make ford to fix this recalled if the car was never fixed for this before.Thanks for your help. *tr

Vehicle spring fractured breaking the bottom part off the coil spring on the front left drivers side of the car.The left front is now lower and tires show wear. I have stopped driving as a result. *tr

Sub frame rusted through around front lower control arm bolts causing excessive play in steering and possible separation of control arm from sub frame. Front mount bolt is recessed 1/2 inch in to the sub frame where water/salt can collect and has no where to drain. *tr

My 99 sable gs has a recall on the front coil springs and ford will not replace them because it has exceeded the time frame. Which is ridiculous! I never even received a recall notice on the car we found the recall online. Also the rear coil springs are broken and the tires are messed up and ford won't recall them if salt is going to get in the front coil springs and make them crack then what makes you think that it won't get in the rear? We have small children and are worried about their safety. We will be getting a lawyer and file a complaint through him because this car is not safe for anyone to be in let alone children. I think they should worry about safety and not mass production. *tr

Subframe of vehicle is severely rusted to the point where it is structurally unsound. Most of the body rot is covered by the plastic molding under the doors, and is not visible until the molding is removed. It seems that water and road salt must get trapped between the molding and metal leading to the extensive rust. The frame breaking while driving at highway speeds would lead to a catastrophic failure which could cause a potentially fatal accident. *tr

Complete brake failure. Pedal went to the floor and car would not stop. I used the emergency brake to safely stop the vehicle. This happened once before about three years ago and a repair center was unable to duplicate. Brake master cylinder failed and needed to be replaced. *tr

She noticed the issue after the vehicle failed inspection. The manufacturer stated that nothing could be done because the contact did not purchase an extended service plan. I have a 1999 mercury sable. In january 11, 2008, i have replaced the windshield washer pump. On july 15, 2008, the pump stopped again. I have noticed that some of the 2000 mercury sables are on recall for the same problem. Might the 1999 mercury sable be looked at in this light to ascertain if this is a recurring problem? *tr

Rear passenger seat belt restraints do not work. It is not possible to extend the seat belt across the lap and shoulder of the passenger. Thus it is unsafe for all passengers riding in the rear of the vehicle, and prevents proper installation of any and all child safety seats.*cn

Front coil spring on a '99 sable, the recall was only good up to 150 miles and my car already had 197 miles. Ford would not pay for the spring because the had a recall limit. I have driven over 1.3 miles never broke a spring. How can ford set a limit for this recall. *jb

The contact stated that this happened on 1/7/07 and was worried that this may cause a fire. The failure occurred after the vehicles power was off and the vehicle was locked.*ak

I took my car to the dealer to have a rear suspension squeak diagnosed and repaired. The mechanic discovered that a broken rear coil spring was the cause of the squeak. The part of the spring that rested in the spring seat had fractured several inches from the end of the coil. The mechanic recommended replacing both coil springs to reduce the risk of the unbroken spring fracturing, puncturing the tire and causing an accident. I paid for replacement of both coil springs and had the rear struts replaced at the same time to restore the car's original ride quality. *jb

Tl* - the contact has a 1999 mercury sable. The contact stated that when she purchased the vehicle may 22 2006, the vehicle did not have heat. The contact stated that she has had many problems with this vehicle since she purchased it. The vehicle operates with a high temperature reading, and the transmission seems to slip gears when you apply the gas pedal and back fires while switching gears. The dealer has not addressed the failures that the contact has experienced with her vehicle. The contact stated that october of 2006 was the last time she corresponded with the dealer and they still have done nothing to help her.

Dt*: the contact stated the gas pedal stuck to the floorboard at an unknown speed causing the vehicle to hit a house. The contact attempted to brake but it did not help in preventing the accident. The vehicle was not taken to a service dealer for inspection of the pedals. The contact sustained injuries and a police report was taken. Dt*: the contact stated when the vehicle was taken to a service dealer for a broken rod, it was determined the fuel tank was leaking from the center seam. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of the leak, but the fuel tank was replaced.

Transmission temporarily fails to shift when accelerating or braking. *jb

Was driving in stop-and-go traffic near holland tunnels in nyc when brakes failed without warning. Went to stop and pedal traveled completely to floor. Had to use emergency brake to stop. 2 hour wait for tow truck, so decided to try driving again after 1 hour. Brakes appeared to function normally thereafter, although a little spongy at first. *jb

When i drive my vehicle through any puddle of water, the power steering fails, the car can not be driven, and the battery light comes on. Extremely dangerous; the steering fails as you try to make a turn!!!!!*jb

My mercury sable front windshield wipers turn on intermittently when you use the blinker and sometimes when you are just holding the steering wheel. Especially on a sunny day, this defect is a startling occurrence and could lead to an accident. I experienced the same problem on my other two 1999 ford vehicles. My 1999 expedition did the same thing and the multifunction switch was replaced under the ford program number 00b40. My 1999 taurus also did the same thing and the multifunction switch was replaced under the 36,000-mile warranty. This is obviously a known problem to ford and should be addressed. If it has happened to three 1999 vehicles in the same household, i am sure the problem is much more widespread and a safety recall is in order. *nm

Air bags did not deploy on our 1999 mercury sable [xxx] after an accident. The front of our car hit the side of a mini-van with enough force to tip the mini-van over. Dt*: the contact stated the cover over the passenger side airbag is separating from the dash. The vehicle has not been in an accident. The dealership was alerted, but the vehicle has not been seen by a mechanic.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35mph, the vehicle was involved in a front impact collision and the airbags did not deploy. Although both occupants were wearing seatbelts, the buckle assembly did not lock resulting in forward motion, which caused the occupants to strike the dash panel area. Minor injuries were sustained. The vehicle had moderate damage. The police were on the scene and a report was taken. The vehicle was not seen by a dealer.

The steering gear assy broke under normal driving conditions. We drove straight to the merc dealer. The mechanic would not even test drive the car because he said it was too dangerous. *nm

1999 mercury sable ls vin - [xxx] car was bought new from copper country ford 12/16/98 warranty - 36,000 miles / 6 years ----------------------------------------------- at approx 36,095 miles oct 2004 i had to replace the rack and pinion steering. Seeing as how i was over the warranty, i called the ford mo. Co and asked if there was anything they would do. Town & country ford (local ford dealer in my town) said they would charge me for the labor only. April 11, 2005 with approx 38,000 miles it started to leak oil. I took it to town & country and they said it needed a new oil pan gasket. They repaired it at my expense. Approx a month later, it was leaking again. Took it in, and they said they fixed it... Oil pan gasket needed some tweeking, so they said. I took it to have its normal 3000 mi oil check days later, and the man who looked at my engine said the fan belt was shredded, and could not believe someone was working on my engine days prior and did not fix it or tell me about it. I had the fan belt replaced. Oct 13, 2005 my car is still leaking oil. I took it to town & country ford, and now they tell me i need a new engine.....Because the block is cracked. I asked if maybe the oil leak that had started in april may have been due to the cracked block, to which i never got an answer. When i asked why the block was cracked, the answer i got was "its made of aluminum, and sometimes these things happen." current mileage is approx 40,000. I just called the ford motor co and they said there are no programs associated with this car to help me and that there is nothing they can do. I realize that im over mileage, and that im over the warranty....But i have replaced the rack and pinion and now i have to replace the engine? Dt: the consumer received recall 04517 from ford in august 2004. Tried last year to have recall repairs done, but ford informed the consumer they did not have the parts in. Now, they have the parts and wanted to charge the consumer for the parts that have to be taken off. Received another postcard in may 2005 saying that the dealer could now order the parts. Took the vehicle to dealer on august 22, 2005 because they just got the parts for the vehicle. Contacted manufacturer, they said the linkage were not part of the recall, but had to remove the old coil springs order to put the new ones on. *ak

Total casastropic brake faiure. With my wife driving we encountered a toll plaza on the garden state parkway in new jersey. My wife attemped to slow the car and at that point exclaimed, "i have no brakes"....We went though the toll booths and stopped the car about 100 feet away using the emergency/parking brake. I opened the hood, and checked the level of brake fluid, it was full. I got behind the wheel and started the car and put it in drive. I too found the brake pedal on 'on the floor' with no stopping power, even at low crawl/idle speed. I again stopped the car using the only means, the parking brake. We had the car towed using a new jersey authorized tow company to their facilities. They cheked the car, drove it, pulled all four wheels and found no problem. They test drove the car and found they were unable to duplicate my problem, brakes worked normally. We drove home about 150 miles using caution and the brakes worked normally as they are working now. We are two mature, well experienced drivers, and i am in the auto parts/repair business. I know with certainty that i had no brakes at the toll plaza, and my wife confirms that. Brake pedal was on the floor and would not even hold the car still at idle speed. I do not know what went wrong, but it is obviously a very dangerious defect, which can cause many fatalities. There should be redundantcy in the brakke system and this should not have happened, whatever the reason. The car is available for inspection if necessary. I have not decided on a further course of action at this point. Thank you

Consumer had coil spring shields installed under safety recall, vehicle would make a loud noise when hitting a dip. *ts the shields that were installed under the recall was causing the noise, so therefore the consumer requested that the dealer remove them. Once they were removed, the noise stopped. The dealer did advise the consumer that driving without the shields could be very dangerous. *jb

The check engine light came on. The car started smoking from under the hood. Then the smoke started coming inside the car from the dashboard. After that the car caught fire under the hood and the car was on fire. Almost everything under the hood burned up. The car is not drivable. *nm

Last thursday or friday, i had left my house to fill the gas tank on my 1999 mercury sable wagon. The tank was just about full when a child walked by and shouted, hey mister, somethings coming out from under your car. Sure enough, the service station attendant and i both looked, and gasoline was pouring, and i mean pouring from the top of the gas tank. I called aaa and immediately had them tow the car to the local dealer, chapman ford, in bridgeton, nj. They have replaced a cannister having to do with the emissions, and some other parts. I am just lucky that this kid came by, or i might have been driving a firebomb. I am waiting, and have been waiting for one week, to have the ford factory rep call me. I am complaining about the bill, since the car has only 42,000 miles on it, but that has nothing to do with the safety issue. The car is still at the dealers location as of today.*ak

Steering very noisy and it is very difficult to make a right turn. You practically have to enter the other lane to make a right turn at a corner. This is not good. *jb

Report of catasropic failure of stering system on 1999 mecury sable / rack and pinion gear fracture/ seems there is major defalt with stering system, total crack in frame /gear system, all had to be replaced, didnt see any recalls, mechanic who fixed say this need to be reported to manafuture, milage is 100k, no accidents in vehicle, just failed while driving. *ak

Fumes inside car noticed, and a slight strange sound from car when running. When taken to shop to find problem, a crack was noticed at the y shaped pipe connecting to both catalytic converters. In order to repair this the whole system has to be replaced even though the converters are fine.*ak

The vehicle was loosing power steering fluid through the rack and pinion steering. The owner took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was informed that the fluid was leaking through the rack and pinion steering assembly. *ak the turning radius was not adequate enough to make a right turn without the front of the vehicle entering the left lane of traffic on the road being turned onto. *sc *jb

On several occasions, after driving my 1999 mercury sable station wagon in moderate to heavy rain, i lose power steering during turns. The alternator light also comes on. I believe the problem is related to excessive belt slippage from water. It goes away if i stop for a few seconds to let the belt regain traction. This condition occurs unexpectedly is a risk to loss of control during the period of time without power steering. *jb

A burning odor was coming from the vents. Consumer noticed while turning on the heater this problem occurred more than once. The front windshield wiper turns on by itself, sometimes it only goes on once and other times it will do it for a few times. It used to only happen once every few months, now there are days that it happens every few minutes. Engine cooling system is faulty. I have had 3 freeze plugs replaced in engine over past year and a half at cost of $500.00 i am told if the others rust behind the engine it will be another $500.00 just had the system flushed last year, now it is rusty again. Cooling system is corrosive! Does that make sense?*ak

Car has always shifted hard. At approximately 90k miles automatic transmission started to fail evidenced by gear slippage and car decellerating while being driven. Transmission pump was also "knocking". Car was taken to transmission shop and they stated that a 10 cent "o" ring had failed in the transmission pump and that the transmission pump had literally "come apart". Also, the transmission pan had a smal, shiny indention where the pump was located, further evidence of where the problem possibly originated. They had also stated that they have seen numerous tuarus' and sables with the same problem. Transmission was completely rebuilt at a cost of $1700.00 and the pump was replaced with one with a metallic "o" ring to help eliminate further failures. I personally take great care and pride with my vehicles and on average have checked all fluid levels, including the transmission fluid on a bimonthly bases. The transmission failure was rather sudden with no warning, to include an engine light.

Ford safety recall 04s17 letter to me states: we expect that these shields will be available in december 2004." this "shield" is, in my opinion, a cheap, ineffective rube goldberg, attempt by ford to cover up a life-threatening situation caused by the fracture of front coil springs puncturing the front tires and in ford's own words: "...Which could increase the risk of a crash without warning." ford also states it would replace a coil spring which fractures. This is an irresponsible position: replace the coild spring only after the accident. Are we owners of 1999 through 2002 sables and tauruses to avoid driving out cars until the non-solution "container" parts might arrive in december? And then wait until the service department can schedule the non-solution? Action by your agency is required to force ford to begin replacement of both front coil springs now! Anything less will result in accidents, injuries and deaths on our roads.*ak

Power steering failed while driving. Consumer heard a winding coming from the front. Consumer pulled over, lifted up the hood, and noticed power steering fluid was dry inside of the canister pump. Consumer was able to drive the vehicle to a local repair shop for steering fluid. Vehicle is 1999 mercury sable,power steering pump started making noise. Examining pump showed no leaks although fluid was low. Fluid added to proper level. Within driving 2 miles pump again made noise. Backing up car allowed visual confirmation of fluid leak on ground. Although some fluid was in steering pump, power assist was lost while driving making the car hard to steer and control. Trip to mechanic revealed rack and pinion failure and massive fluid leak. Milage on vehicle is 67,100 miles. Mechanic feels premature failure should not have occured at 67k miles. Price to replace is approx $500 to $800 should hydraulic hoses also need to be replaced. *ak

I was driving my car when the passenger front spring broke and fell down puncturing the tire causing a blowout, luckily i was able to pull over without crashing. This was a very dangerous thing to happen and i was very lucky to escape without being seriously hurt. *jb

There were no events leading up to the failure. Coil spring failed and broke going out of our driveway, puncturing inner side wall of front left tire. We got a replacement strut and coil spring assembly from a salvage yard costing $53.30. New tire costing $59.73. Old coil spring showed no signs of abnormal corrosion so it should not have failed. Fuel was leaking from the fuel filter line onto the exhaust pipe while driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for repairs. *ak the vehicle was leaving the driveway when gas was smelled. The consumer looked underneath the vehicle and viewed gasoline squirting across the entire width of the vehicle. When i drive in the rain or through a puddle, the steering completely fails and my battery light comes on. Twice i have come severely close to crashing my car as a result of loss of steering completely! *ak

I own a 1999 ,mercury sable.On may 13, 1999, while backing out of my driveway,i heard a very loud popping sound then a very loud grinding noise. I called my dealership and was told to bring my vehicle in. I then had it towed there. When they called to inform me of the problem, iwas told that the front right coil spring had broke and in the process had ruined my tire also. I wastold it would cost about $300.00 to fix and that it was not covered under my extended warrenty. I gave them the okay to fix it. Later that day, i was talking to an individual who told me about two other incidents that he had heard of this happening. Being a parent, with small children,i became concerned of their safety. I started looking for this problem came across some other incidents that this had happened but found no recall of this nature.I will have my vehicle back on monday, but have to wonder if i should be responsible for the expense or if the manfacture should be paying the expense. Rear left tire consistently low, even after being filled and re-filled on a weekly basis. After taking to a service station, mechanic stated the rim was faulty and tire was separating from the rim. They sealed the tire to the rim. After having all tires replaced a few months later, same issue with same rear left tire. Different mechanic also stated upon inspection that rim was warped. Car has not been in an accident, nor abused. Rims are standard manufacturers. *nm

Seat belt retractors are failing in order of most frequent use (e.G. Driver, front passenger, rear passengers). The driver's belt retractor fails to pull the seat belt back into the columnar storage area 100% of the time (front passenger belt 50% and rear passengers ~10%). This presents a safety hazard as the belts will not provide the life saving tension required during an accident. The belt hangs limp over the wearer. Seat belts are required to be worn by law. Yet, auto manufacturers are not required to warranty these parts for the life of the car. The great majority of manufacturers only warrant seat belts for 3 years or 36000 miles. As consumers, are we to believe that this means manufacturers only expect the seat belts to function during this time period. This is absurd and should be changed via legislation requiring auto makers to warranty legally required safety devices for the life of the car. It would force manufacturers to make these parts to last instead of engineering them to last until just after the warranty period is over.*ak

The brakes on the 1999 mercury sable that i purchased 4 years ago have been repaired and/or replaced 4 times! Now they are going out again. I have had the rotors turned, and every other thing that has been suggested. When i asked the last mechanic why my brakes keep going out, he stated that this size of ford was not supplied with an appropriate brake for the size of car. I asked what could be done to remedy the situation, and was informed that i would have to keep replacing the brakes. I think this is a horrible answer. I would like to know what ford will do for me. I live in oregon and am surrounded by mountains, but i don't dare go over any of the mountain ranges because going downhill and applying the brakes makes the entire car shimmy and it feels like i will lose control of the car and that it won't stop. I have to make weekly trips over the mountains, so i always rent a car. This is getting to be too expensive. I own my car free and clear and would like the brakes to stay fixed once i get them fixed before there is an accident. *tr

While driving in heavy rain storm, engine crankshaft pulley assy broke causing the loss of power steering immediately, i struggled to maintain control of vehicle. I had repaired at local shop in long island ,ny , mechanic said new replacement unit was much different than original indicating that there was problem with design of original unit.Had i not been able to steer vehicle there could have been a collision resulting in injuries , etc. I checked recalls & there were non related to this mechanical failure. I paid $309.91 for repairs to vehicle. On sunday aug. 17th i drove onto a steep exit from a 4 lane highway to a fiveline highway. I had no brakes. The light at the bottom of the ramp stayed green (there were about 40 cars waiting to enter the intersection)--i crossed all five lanes and crashed my car into a dirt bank. I had no brakes --the man following me said (and told the police) that he smelled a burning ordor or brake smell and had commented to his wife that he thought something was wrong with my brakes before the incident. He advised the police. The police checked the brakes and the pedal was on the floor. I was advised yesterday (8/19) that state farm is totalling the car--that they can find nothing wrong with the brakes. Now there is no way that something did not go wrong with those brakes--my father and i were almost killed. I want to know if other ford sables or taurus--1999 models have had a similar problem?*ak

I purchased the used vehicle april 03. Early august, i went out to lunch with a friend-when he attempted to put on the vehicle seat belt in the front passenger seat it would not work. We drove his car instead. I thought it was a fluke. I decided to check the internet and located this problem as a manufacturer recall and figured it would be no problem for the dealer to take care of it. This problem continued to happen but because of my work schedule i was unable to get the vehicle to the dealer because of the hours of the service department. From august to date no one has been able to ride in the front seat. I was on vacation and i contacted the dealer to schedule a service appointment. I took the car in on 12/30/03 and was told that i needed to pay a $75 diagnostic fee as no information came up for this vehicle indicating a recall or a warranty. The warranty situation was corrected but i received a message from tonia cooper (service department) after i faxed over the recall information from nhtsa that my vehicle would not be covered under the recall. I thought this was absurd; i am experiencing the same problem that is noted on all of the documentation of the recall but because ford neglected to include my vin number no one would help me. What's worse is that i called fords' customer relations on 12/30/03 and spoke with syed who refused to give me a last name or an id# and he told me there was nothing i could do and no one outside of customer relations at the dealership that i could contact to get this matter resolved. I find it most irritationg that no one could conceive the notion that this vin# (& perhaps others) were erroneously omitted from the recall. I looked at the 3 complaints from other owners & one has a vin# very similiar to mine. Thank you for your assistance in this matter, i only wish that i could have resolved this matter with ford directly. Passenger safety & michigan's "click it or ticket it" law has makes this an extrememly important issue!*ak

Total loss of braking while travelling 50 mph. Pedal went completely to the floor. No lights indicating brake failure lit. Put on flashers, moved to brakedown lane, exited hwy, up hill speed dropped, allowed driver to come against a curb and stop. Brake fluid in resevoir is all very black. Vehicle ha been towed to a shop.

Hesitation in transmission. Excessive leak in trans fluid, made a large puddle. Had a wobble as vehicle accelerated. Had front trans seal and axle seals replace, as well as one axle

My son, john, has had the accelerator cable on his 1999 mercury sable, fail three times in the last three years. The most recent failure was yesterday in the middle lane of the gulf freeway while traveling at 65 mph. The faillure results in disconnection of the accelerator cable from the pedal, resulting in total loss of manual throttle control. He was fortunate to reach the freeway shoulder before he stopped. We called the dealer who had replaced the cable twice before for the same failure and he said his only fix was to replace the same cable again. Since we already knew that to be unsafe, we "jury rigged" a fix ourselfves that we think is ok. I am a retired nasa engineer and my assessment of the design, especially in view of the three failures, is that it is inadequate and unsafe. I cannot tell whether the failure mode is generic or for some reason, peculiar to our car. The dealer could only offer that we should call ford customer relations. I talked to them and they could only refer me back to the dealer. After some argument they finally agreed to take down the information and forward it to some appropriate party. They offered be no assurance that there would be follow-up or way for me to follow-up their action. I am filing this complaint to insure some kind of follow-up on these failures. *ak

Driver's seat belt does not latch securely everytime. Seat belt becomes unlatched while driving for no apparant reason. This problem occurred many times since the purchase two years ago. I rarely have passengers so it is unknown if problem extends to the other seat belts. *ak

Car was two years old when purchased, and had 60k miles. I noted that car would shake, especially during braking. I also noted that vehicle pulled to one side during braking. I took car to shop and found that the brake discs had to be turned due to warpage. (i was told that this was common on these vehicles, including tuarus') this eleviated most of the problems, but was told that the tie rods, and tie rod ends were wore out and had to be replaced. I personally looked at the original tie rods after they were replaced and noted that they were wore out. This problem could have possibly resulted in premature braking and lose of control of the vehicle. There was a notable difference in the braking distance and ability to control vehicle at higher speeds. I still have the original tie rods, and ends.

Rims on 1999 mercury sable are corroding (not easily visable, but when you pull the tires off). Will cause leakage of air out of tires. Dealerships will not even look at problem, says they are not covered.*ak also windshield wipers will occasionally just come on.

Consumer experienced a flat on the right front tire. The consumer changed tire to an unused spare and attempted to drive to service station. While driving, the spare blew out. Upon inspection by dealer, it was discovered the coil spring had broken and pierced both tires, and caused damage. *ak found the rotors out of round. The drivers side seat belt on my 99 mercury sable does not latch and lock all the time. It goes in and acts like it latches (seat belt light goes out) until a fair amount of force is applied to the seat belt and it release's from the seat belt latch. I've had this happen multitudes of times even thought i try and remember to double check that the seat belt is secure.*ak

Arriving home from dinner, found rear glass of my 1999 mercury sable wagon had exploded. There was glass all over my drive way. The glass was found up to 5 feet from the vehicle. Police investigated and determined that the rear glass panel in fact exploded from the inside of the vehicle outward, probably due to a change in temperature.*jb

While traveling at approximately 35 miles per hour on a two lane road i saw a tire tread shoot in front of my vechicle. I then heard a loud noise coming from the rear of my automobile i attempted to pull over and stop. The entire cap part of the tire was missing. Only the side walls remained. It took me quite some time to obtain tow service because i has in a dead zone for my cell phone. The tow truck driver which changed my tire said he would take care of the old cap. I was so tired from this ordeal and long wait for the tow truck after having to walk until i was able to get a cell signal that i did not think to save the cap. Controlling the car to a stop was very stressfull. There is damage to the mag whell and to the guards that surround that tire. I had the dealer examine the remaining 3 tires but found them to look ok. The car had been serviced by this dealer at a little of 35000 miles.I am fearfull that the remaing tires will fail without warning. 1) rack & pionion rod: at approximately 55000 miles, the rack and pinion seal blew out. This could have caused the power steering to fail and result in an accident. There was no viable reason for this componenet to fail. The car has never been in any kind of an accident. Repairs were approximately $700. 2) front axle/abs: a problem with braking began and resulted in brakes slipping and vibrating, causing a sound of metal on metal. Upon inspection it was determined that the ring/gear on the front drivers side of the axel was originally installed incorrectly. The gear should be approximately 3/8" from the bolts for the front wheels. However, in this instance, the gear has been grinding away the bolts. There is no evidence of the gear "slipping" it is and has always been in the same spot. This causes metal shavings to fall onto the abs sensor and results in the abs not working. This is a safety issue and could result in a crash due to the abs not working. Ford does not seem to want to fix this item even though it is clear that the car originally came from the manufacturer with this problem.*ak

Hard upshift and downshift while coming to a stop or pulling away. Once vehicle was stopped it would have a tendency at times to lurch forward while brake was on.. Upon taking the transmission down, the dealer found clutch material in transmission the ss3 was sticking, the accumulator o-ring was cut the forward drum ck.Vall sticint overdrive band burned and needed to exchange the entire transmission. Thankfully the trany was under warranty. However, now the repaired assy is only covered for 12000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first and we are naturally concerned that this might be a defect as the ford taures seemed to have trany problems in the 1197 to 1999 range which is why we did not buy one but went with the sable after checking nhtsa reports re: the vehicle itself. *ak

The rear center shoulder belt hooks over a pin on the buckle. There is no positive lock or unlock mechanism. We followed the instructions in the owner's manual about how to connect the rear center shoulder belt. The shoulder belt suddenly disconnects when the passenger happens to move a certain way. The belt rapidly retracts and the metal buckle hits the right rear passenger in the face or eye. A positve lock should be installed so the rear center shoulder belt will stay latched until it is intentionally released. This car was rented from hertz company in maui, hawaii, so i do not know details such as vin number. *ak

When shifting the car into reverse it would hesitate and would eventually shift after repeated attempts. After a couple days the car would not shift into reverse from park but would if it was first put into drive and then reverse. The car pulls sharply to the right under accelleration. Then when it is freewheeling it pulls to the left. The car has been in for repairs 3 times and has been out of service for almost 60 days. On a recently purchased 1999 mercury sable there are minute scratches within the area of the windshield swept by the wipers. These scratches act as a refractor causing glare when traveling toward the sun and from oncoming vehicles lights and overhead street lights, etc. Upon further investigation it was noted that when the washer was actuated that the wipers would make an upward sweep prior to fluid being dispensed onto the windshield. The wiper action scoured the windshield with the dirt or deposits on the glass causing these scratches. My wife stated the glare is similar to that she experience prior to her cataract surgeries. From a recent discussion with a service manager of a ford dealer it was learned that most late model ford products washer operate the same way, i.E. The washer pump motor and wiper motor are energized simultaneously and the delay of the fluid application is due the fluid having to be pumped from a remote reservoir. Nlm

It had to be pushed into position then juggled in order for it to latch correctly. Note******i did not have any failures!! My reason for writing is to complain about the frequent shifting of the automatic transmission. In addition, the brakes vibrate at high speed usually between 55-70 when braking. To be fair i reported and had the car serviced when the brakes first vibrated. The service manager reported that there were heat marks on the disc's. My principal driving is highway with limited braking. The dealer shaved the rotors (which bothered me given that there was less then 10,000 miles at the time), and the vibration disappeared. I am however once again seeing some slight vibration. Tire wear appears to be normal. Getting back to the rotors, i am concerned that the life of the rotors having been cut will be short. As for the transmission this has just started, and i haven't yet scheduled a service call. I have spoken to several people who own either taurus's or sables's and the recurring problem seems to be the transmissions. What do you guys say?
