The wall of the flared fitting of the fuel pump is not thick enough to prevent the mating threaded fittings from bottoming out before an adequate seal is achieved. This condition may result in leakage of fuel at the connection of the vehicle fuel line and the fuel pump module assembly.

• Recall 2696 [USA]: This condition could cause the lower lateral arm ball joint to separate, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. this campaign supercedes mmc's previous safety recall campaign, see 99v-066.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. If the rubber boots on the lower lateral arm ball joints of the front suspension were damaged during assembly, dirt and water can intrude. Also, mmc has added the potential of leaking moisture, which can cause the ball stud to corrode.

  The transfer case of the all wheel drive (awd), mitsubishi galant, allegedly leaks oil causing one or more wheels to lockup; or the inability to transmit engine power to the drive wheels.The vehicles have the same transfer case design as the eclipse vehicles which have been recalled for the same alleged defect.

This vehicle has a recall for the lower ball joint. After calling to set up an appointment to fix this issue the vehicle shows up as already serviced, which may have only been as little as an inspection that was done. The ball joint in this vehicle is currently failing and is extremely noticeable while driving. I am in search of a record for who filed the service for this recall or a confirmation that this issue can be "fixed" once again under the same recall.

I never received a recall alert from the dealer. Right now the dealer was sold to a new owner. I went to the dealer to buy a fender and my vin number does not appear in the mitsubishi computer system here in puerto rico either in usa. So i would like an advise. What i have to do. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the turn signal was still stuck. The dealer stated that a new turn signal switch needed to be purchased. Unable to find a suitable booster seat for my 5y/o son weighing 45lbs that will rest in the deep seated contours of the rear bucket seats for 1997 mitsubishi eclipse . *jb

Squealing belts at startup, inconsistent small leaks of coolant, hesitation at 2k rpm were only pre-cursors. Out of nowhere, while driving on highway, i looked at gauges for no particular reason....Noticed the temperature was rising, eventually going as far as it could above h. So i look for smoke in rear view....Nothing. I turn down the radio to listen for noises......Nothing. Everything seems fine. Hoping that air through the radiator would cool the engine......Not working. I decided i better pull over.....The second i safely stopped, huge puffs of white smoke billowed out the hood edges. I jumped out, opened the hood......Huge clouds of smoke and smell of burning rubber, i thought the car was on fire. Once the smoke settled, oil could be seen splattered all over the engine. Tow truck comes and while putting on flatbed.....Oil drained out like a water faucet. Found out later from the dealer that oil line burst, causing the head gaskets to blow and most likely damaged totaled the engine. New engine quoted at $5000, used 71,000 mile engine in some salvage yard in alabama quoted at $2-3000. Nice chunk of money and the engine still needs to be shipped and installed. What a deal? I actually spoke highly about mitsubishi's in the past, but now i'm having second thoughts. Too bad mitsubishi company has such a bad history of failures, recalls, and poor repair service. I was actually thinking of buying a 2006 eclipse........Not any more. I'll miss my 97 eclipse......It was pretty good to me, but this recent event with no warning, did me in and it is just wrong that i have read similar incidents on the internet and mitsubishi does nothing. Time for an american car...............Too bad we don't have the sense to make oil and gas-free vehicles though.......The technology is there. This vehicle was included in recall # 00v421001 for suspension: lower ball joints. The vehicle contained the same ball joints from the last recall. Speed control issue, gas pedal sticking, car consistently idles between 1500 to 3000 rpms engine revving up and down while at a stop and while in park. Manual shift very stiff. *jb

While driving my car at morning 9:00 am on 11/7/2005, all sudden my driver side window glass broken into pieces. I have stopped my car and checked. There is no one around also. But all of a sudden it is broken into pieces completely. *jb

Paint job defects. I have owned several mitsubishis vehicles in my family. All resulting in paint defects on the car. Only one has not, dealership said because there is a defect and that one vehicle not affected was made and painted in japan. Transmission was slipping so i stop driving it. When i tested it out again, it was even worst and i can't even go past 40 mph. So far there hasn't been any repairs done to the car since i was told by a mechanic that there are transmission recalls on the automatic 97 gs eclipse and was advise not to drive it anymore because it can result in a accident. Car fails mandatory obd-ii smog test due to non-continuous readiness monitors failing to set to complete during normal driving. Dealer must use mut-ii diagnostic tool to set monitors to ready state. When diagnostic mode is exited and ignition turned off monitors revert to not-ready state. Problem common to 1997 mitsubishi eclipse gst according to dealer. No remedy available. Car does not meet federal emission requirements.*jb

Convertible top will not open all the way. Support bracket is bent and will not let top lower completely into housing. There is no complete fix for this. Dealer says, this is a manufacture defect, support brackets are to thin for this type of top.

I purchased my 97 eclipse sypder convertible in june 04. After 3 months the check engine came on. Diagonosed as small evap leak code 0442. Took to dealer. The fuel cut off valve is cracked and the vapor hose is separated (has a leak) parts are on order and total cost $475.00. How can a valve crack and a vapor hose have a leak? Are these parts defective? Please note that i was told that if i was in an accident, the car would explode because of these 2 problems. I purchased my vehicle at desert chrysler jeep, here in las vegas, nv, 702-457-0293. When i called them about this, the service department referred me to courtesy mitsubishi. Consumer's vehicle swerved to keep from striking another vehicle at 45 mph. Then, vehicle went into a ditchand turned over. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. Consumer sustained injuries.*ak

Roof leaked & would not fully retract due to deformation of structural roof members (roof pillars). Required replacement of 3 major roof members plus installation of straps (as defined in technical service bulletin). This was a structural failure of the roof design known to mitsubishi, but no recall or consumer alert was communicated.*jb

I have owned my care for 3 years. In that time i have had a leaking sunroof, broken passenger rear view mirror, broken passenger window "wont roll up", numerous tire changes, bad vibration, horrible noises when turning wheel, have replaced 2 transmissions, both tie rod ends, 1 lower ball joint and control arm suspension bar"more info on this below", alternator, both headlights, 4 differant seats of breaks, 2 seats constintly running low on oil, replaced the fuel filter, seat belts don't stop, battery cables keep caroding, replace spark plugs atleast 3 to 4 times a year, vibrates when going down road. Those are just the things off the top of my head that i have done to this car. Now to the accident. After i got off work i was on my way home when i decided to go to my friends so while driving to her house i hear a loud pop and the next thing i know my car is controling itself and i can't steer it. This was all do to my lower ball joint shattering and my wheel almost completly detaching from my car. Now the other side is starting to make that horrible noise. The control arm swung on the bottum of my car after it broke during this and tore out my oil filter, oil pan, and oxygen senseor. Have yet to recieve any information from mitsubishi.*ak

Front left tire continuously deflating, leading to rapid deflation because of a seven inch cut along the seam of the tire. Fortunately it happened at a very low speed and i was able to get off the road safely. I had just left the highway and was driving 70 mph. Replaced all four tires.*ak

Lug:nuts put on to specification when tires replaced. Within 1 month front driver tire almost came off due to loose nuts. Mechanic tightened to specification. Ith 1 month both front tires almost fell off on freeway due to loose nuts.*ak called mitsubshi motors. They suggested i have them replaced by dealer since they are custom nuts, at my expense.*ak

97 spyder convertible - i am the owner since 08/03. Rear window was leaking a bit and last week literally fell out. Had to replace top, window could not be repaired. Corners of driver and passenger sides are leaking seriously despite top replacement. Seals may have to be replaced. Cost so far - $2001 plus rental car. Passenger seat slides and is difficult to lock.*ak

Complaint received via e-mail."the convertible top literally leaks so bad that the whole interior is moldy. There is a "lake" in the trunk under the spare tire. On more than one occasion, the top will become unlocked and fly up. The support bars are bent and the straps are just hanging. The top does go up and down, but very slowly and not straight. I have to adjust the top as it is going up and down. Mitsubishi has looked at the car and said there is absolutely nothing wrong with the convertible top. I feel that this is a serious safety defect and i am beginning to feel very unsafe in my car. The top has gotten so unstable that i can't go over 60 mph. 1997 mitsibishi convertible. Brackets on both sides of convertible top have bent preventing top from opening completely. It happens on all convetibles of this type and has already been identified by manufacturer, however, they won't do anything about it.*ak

October 20, 2003 i purchased a 1997 eclipse gst from city limit auto in johnston, ri. March 14, 2004 i was driving home when a small click formed in 1st and 2nd gear after reaching 3,500 rpms. With-in minutes the click developed into what sounded like a small hole in the exhaust, probably the cat. Not wanting to risk it i pulled off the next exit to bring the car to my friend's house and have it towed. A street away from his house (doing 10mph in 1st gear), the noise grew into a loud constant electrical buzzing or clicking noise, no high oil presue on the dash light or gauge and no overheating according to gauge, with-in 5 seconds the oil pan blew, white billows of smoke puffed out and the engine seized. I tried to turn the car over, but all it did was clink, and when i got out i found a large oil puddle under my car. I went back to the dealer, but he refuses to fix it. I don't know the exact reason the engine blew, for lack of money, but after reading some websites i have concluded it was either the fuel pump, oil pump, or crankwalk. I was driving home from work on the highway when my transmission went out of gear i was in the process of passing a long line of trucks and had to pull off into the left side breakdown lane and was nearly hit by numerous cars due to sensors in the car shutting the transmission off due to transmission failure. I have replaced 4 transmissions in the last 2 years and am getting rid of this car as soon as possible. Its a very reliable car except for the transmissions, they are total junk and mitsubishi should recall all of them. They definately are a safety hazard and i have had transmissions lock up on me going through intersections just about colliding into other vehicles. Im surprised that car hasnt caused a wreck yet. *ak

Fuel relay switch on my mitsuibishi eclipse 1997 gs has failed on several occasions. In order to get my car to start, i have to go under the hood, "wiggle" the relay switch and lightly tap on the top of it. This fuel relay has been replaced by dealer and the problem continues to occur, even causing the car to go dead during travel. Dealership claims they do not know why it occurs. (20+ occurrences) enormous amounts of "bluish" gas fumes coming from the tail pipe, regardless of idle or in motion. (always occurring) sunroof sticks (5-10 occurrences) both driver and passenger windows rattle when car is in motion and as the door is being shut (continuous occurrence) clutch failure, hard shifting (1 occurrence). *jb

Front suspension lower control arms ball joint. Loud knocking sound evident on drivers side. Wheel base on drivers side is 1998" while passenger side is still at 1999" previous recall concerns did not state which lower control arm to be replaced. Dealer replaced the smaller straight arm and not the l-shaped one. The lower l-shaped arm ball joint controls the wheelbase when seperated could send the vehicle airborn by wheel to frame contact.*ak

Transmission fluid was leaking from underneath the vehicle. There were no visible warnings at this time. *ak

On august 8, 2003, my son purchased a 1997 mitsubishi eclipse, 97037 miles, from [xxx]-owner, south bay auto-[xxx]. We purchased the car for $8,849.21. On august 11, 2003, the engine blow because there was no oil in the car, and the dealer stated that the car had been serviced and it was in good mechanical condition. Just this week the warranty investigator said that the oil leak was there before we purchased the car, and that they will not be replacing the engine, and that the car is the dealers problems. Needless to say, the dealer does not want to do the moral thing and give us back our hard earned money, nor does he wants to replace the engine. This same dealer, loan us an unsafe car that we found out that it has been declared by the state of california as a salvaged. The car is a 1991 honda, vin #[xxx]. Last saturday, on the way home from san jose, ca, to vallejo, ca, the brakes were starting to give out on the car. This week, i could not stop the car and ran into a wall to stop it. Thank god, i was not hurt. I then called the dealer and told him what had happen, and the only thing he told me that i will pay for any damages done to the car. He had the car towed and stated that he would charge me for the tow and the repairs. Now he wants me to compensate him for putting my life, and the life of my family at risk while driving his unsafe, salvaged car. Steering rod broke while driving, causing right front wheel to "pop" out, resulting in a collision.*ak

Consumer noticed oil in the driveway. Vehicle was taken to a mechanic to detect where the oil was leaking from. Mechanic determined that the head gasket blew out. Head gasket has was revised twice by the manufacturer before they had one that worked. Defective head gasket was replaced with the revised head gasket. However, leak hasn't recurred.*ak

Evaporative emission control system leak. *ak

Consumer stated that during a recall replacement of the lower control arms, the dealer discovered that the left side upper control arm was failing due to excessively worn ball joint and should be replaced. The consumer was seeking reimbursement from the manufacturer since these suspension parts failed at the same time. *yh

The thrust washer is welded to the crankshaft in my car. For whatever reason, there is a defect in the thrust washers that cause there to be an increase in the amount of play in the crankshaft. This causes what had been termed the "crankshaft walk". Among other symptoms, common and what happened to my car was that the 5 speed manual transmission started to lock up on me where i could not even get the car in gear. The movement in the crankshaft caused the crankshaft positioning sensor to go out, and when it did, i was driving on the freeway at 65 mph and the car shut off on me causing me to lose my power brakes and steering. I did not get into an accident, but i could have. I had the thrust washer replaced and now have the same problem. I am not alone. The 17" mitsubishi eclipse wheels bend under normal driving conditions. On three different occasions i have experienced serious problems with these wheels. These problems have also caused me to buy new tires when it might not have been needed.*ak

I was going on us-101 north and got side-swiped by an suv which was trying to get into my lane (car pool lane). I was at a speed of 60-65 mph. I lost control of the car and rear-ended another suv. Driver noticed smoke coming from under vehicle. Driver stopped vehicle/ put vehicle in park/ looked under car and saw oil was leaking. When pressing gas consumer could see a flame of fire. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated that vehicle needed a head gasket. *ak

The mechanic was unable to diagnose the cause of failure. Approximately three years later, the vehicle jerked to the right and the left. The mechanic stated that the lower control arm and rod ends needed to be replaced. There is a recall for the lower ball joint (recall # 00v421001). The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage is 130,000 and failure mileage was 80,000.

On june 18,2001 first tire peeled off.Continental tire ,charlotte,nc 28273, mrs kimberly somerville, 704-588-4164would not pay for damanged, stated some road hazard punctured the tire. Again, on june 13, 2001 a second tire peeled off and cause damange.My attorney wrote them about the damage on july 30,2001. They refused to answer her letter.I still have the two peeled off tires in my father's garage.First tire claim number with continental was c-10-343. Well, its one of the defaults that mitsubishi is hiding. Its a failure in the crank bearing which causes the clutch not to work properly and a very annoying taping sound when the clutch is pressed. The main dangerous problem is that you cannot shift properly while driving making it unsafe and frustrating. I took my car to the dealer and they said i need to replace the whole engine(shortblock) and it will be under my cost around $3500. The workers there addmitted to me that its a default that they dont have a recall on. I bought the car under the intention that mitsubishi makes very reliable products. Unfortunatly i was very mistaken especially after the few incidents on the news. Please help me because i am losing a lot of money with this problem. Thank you.

The front bumper has crack in half on driverside to low ground

There was no indication prior to the engine blowing that there was a problem. The mechanic said there was plenty of oil in it. Only a used engine with 63,000 miles on it could be located to repair the car at a cost of $3474.17. Mitsibushi was called and their only response was there were no recalls involving this particular car. A letter was mailed to them with the auto shop bill on august 30, 2000. There has been no response from them.

The manual gear shifter locked up in the position of third gear, shifter has been a chronic problem since ownership, dealer claims failure resulted in the need for a complete transmission rebuild as the bottom section broke off and fell into the gear works. Two top brackets in the convertible top have bent, preventing top from lowering completely. I was told by the dealer that this is a very common problem caused by stretching in a pair of straps in the top. These straps have been replaced in subsequent models. 1 and 1/2 years after i bought my "brand new" car, the check engine light went on. I was told that my water pump and gasket needed to be replaced. One week later i experienced a problem with the power steering, i was told the power steering pully, bracket and belt had gone and would need to be replaced. Since then i have had the brake pads and the roters resurfaced more times then i care to remember. On july 26, 1999, i had noticed a problem with my transmission. I immediately brought it to the dealership, they told me that the trans was "operating to manufacture's specs". On november 3, 1999 the dearlership advises me i need a new trans.

I own a 1997 mitsubishi eclipse gsx all-wheel-drive. I have a leak in the transfer case, which prematurely causes wear on the case housing and can lead to a part failure resulting in wheel lockage while driving. This is a huge safety hazard and the dealership in my area has ignored my concerns and causing me grow very concerned when i drive my vehicle. In june of 1998 i began experiencing the clutch intermittently sticking (sometimes to the ground and i would have to manually pull the clutch up while driving) at speeds of anywhere from 5 to 65 miles an hour. After numerous attempts to fix my car in a period of four months the dealer i have been having my car serviced at (todey mitsubihi in ventura, ca) has finally diagnosed the problem as a faulty engine, apparently the engine is actually shifting and this was causing my clutch problems. I am aware that todey mitsubishi has seen at least one other vehicle with this same engine flaw (shifting) manifesting itself in a fluid leak.

The rear right tail light blinks really fast causing the bulb to blow. Vehicle has been taken to the dealer & mechanic and they only replace the bulb, they will not check any of the electric components. Owner has noticed that the light bulb socket contacts are corroded, this is what she believes is causing the problem.

I have had several wheels on this mitsubishi eclipse damaged. I have owned several eclipses in the past and have never had a wheel bend as easily as these. It seems once they installed the 17 inch wheels they used softer material to manufacturer the wheels which will not stand up to daily driving and usual road surface conditions.*ak

About a week after purchasing the car, it sat for 3 days while i was away on navy business. When i returned, i had to sit in heavy traffic. I noticed the engine temp gauge was full hot. I finally got to a road to let the engine breath, and the gauge didn't go down. I took the car to kelly mitsubishi the next day and told them what happen. I also told them that the heater didn't put out hot air. They replaced the thermostat and everything was fine. No problems since then.

Brakes: driving approximately 25mph, truck ahead of the eclipse had come to stop, applied brakes and there were no brakes. Car accelerated as if the cruise control was on, kept pumping brakes, but car kept accelerating. When brakes finally kicked in car slid underneath truck, demolishing front end and the air bags did not deploy. *ak
