NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 76550 [USA]: Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.
Mitsubishi is recalling 45,988 my 2005-2007 endeavor, galant, eclipse coupe, and my 2007 eclipse spyder vehicles. The bracket that is the attachment point for the left rear fuel tank mounting strap may have been improperly formed during a metal stamping process. The process may have caused the metal to have a split in the area where the bolt that holds one of the two fuel tank straps to the underside of the vehicle is located. In the event the fuel tank is full and the vehicle is subject to a severe collision, the bracket may break and allow the fuel tank to drop down, possibly causing a fuel leak.
dealers will inspect to see if the left rear fuel tank strap mounting bracket has splitting beyond a specific limit. Vehicles with moderate to severe splitting will be repaired using a reinforcement cap, a special structural adhesive, and a rivet to reinforce the fuel tank mounting bracket. The recall began on september 20, 2008. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.
mitsubishi recall no. Sr-08-005.Customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 76223 [USA]: If the driver does not shift to park before removing the key and fails to engage the parking brake, the vehicle could roll and a crash could occur.
Mitsubishi is recalling 73,000 my 2004-2006 gallant passenger vehicles. During vehicle use, the ignition key interlock cable (which is a component of the interlock system) may allow the interlocking cam to fall forward and allow the ignition key to be removed from the ignition switch when the gearshift mechanism is not in the park position.
dealers will inspect and correct these vehicles for the reported condition. The recall began on september 2, 2008. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.
mitsubishi recall no. Sr-08-004.Customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 36167 [USA]: This may result in a partial loss of braking, increased stopping distances, and could lead to a vehicle crash.
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes, the brake master cylinder, which controls the fluid pressure to the vehicle's brakes, may allow brake fluid to bypass internally during stopping.
dealers will replace the brake master cylinder. The recall began on october 3, 2005. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.
customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236; (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall R/2000/090 [UK]: Fuel tank may crack and leak
There is a possibility that the fuel tank may be incorrectly welded on its upper panel and baffle plate in the tank causing it to crack on the welded position. In the worst case this may cause the fuel tank to leak fuel.
inspect the vehicles replace the fuel tanks if leaking and in cases where no abnormality is found apply a protector plate.

  • Recall 2008264 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, the ignition key interlock cable may allow the interlocking cam to fall forward and allow the ignition key to be removed from the ignition when the gearshift mechanism is not in the park position. If the driver does not shift to park before removing the key, and fails to engage the parking brake, the vehicle could roll and a crash could occur. This could result in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

  • Recall 2008374 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, the bracket that is the anchor point for the left rear fuel tank mounting strap may have been improperly formed during the manufacturing process. This may have caused the metal to spilt in the area where the bolt holds the fuel strap to the underside of the vehicle. In the event the tank is full of fuel and the vehicle is involved in a serious collision the bracket could break and the tank could drop down. This situation could result in a fuel leak and the possibility of a fire. Correction: dealers will inspect and if necessary install a reinforcement cap to the fuel tank bracket.

  • Recall 2005268 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, the brake master cylinder was improperly assembled which can result in reduced braking pressure and increase brake pedal stroke. Should this condition occur, the braking distance required to stop the vehicle will increase and may lead to a vehicle crash. Correction: dealers will replace the brake master cylinder.

Good morning, i purchased my 2005 mitsubishi galant es in june or july of 2005 with approximately 1,400 miles and for the pasted few weeks i've notice the passenger air bag is rising/separating more and more of the dashboard exactly above the glove compartment silver trimming. I contact the mitsubishi dealer (866-346-0796) on sept. 10, 2013 where i my purchased the vehicle and explained to them in detail the problem with the passenger air bag. The service writer asked for the last eight digit of the vehicle vin # which i provided. The service writer pulled up the history in his computer and advised me that the car was out of warranty and there is nothing they can do about. I was very surprised by his answer and told him i will contact mitsubishi corp. Office to find a resolution to this problem before it get worst. And for the record i've previously owned two montero mitsubishi suv. *tr

I have a 2006 mitsubishi galant that is out of warranty and only has 65k miles on the odometer. It a black galant and the paint is fading in spots, it looks like oxydation is setting in, i've tried over the counter polishes to correct the problem to no avail. This imho, is a paint defect and i feel that mitsubishi should correct the problem. The car looks like like crap now and i am not likely to purchase another galant if this is not remedied. *tr

Paint is coming off even though it is properly cared for, garaged etc. This is a known paint issue and i'm wanting it fixed.. No one will buy this vehicle in this condition. Owned since new in 2005. *tr

I have a black 2005 mitsubishi galant. Within the past year the paint has been fading by turning a off white in some areas and it is spreading like cancer. I even have a spot that is getting rusted. I am not sure what to do but there needs to be a paint recall. I need my paint fixed please before it spreads everywhere. I have three children and am not able to purchase a new car at this time. *tr

There is a recall on certain 2005 galants but i was told not mine. I am having the same problems with my brakes as the recall states. I have had it to the dealer and told the first time that there was nothing wrong. The second time they ordered a timing part but i feel that is not the problem. I go tomorrow to have the part put on. I fear for my safety with these malfunctioning brakes. They make a terrible grinding noise and my car lurches forward about 4 inches and is only getting worse. I asked just because my car isn't in the recall it doesn't mean i am not having the same problem. How long do i need to ride around in a car with damaged brakes before the problem is corrected. I have not had an accident yet and would like to get this problem fixed so i don't end up in one. *tr

My car would not start at all. After it being towed to a garage, they diagnosed the problem to be the electrical wiring harness. It was chafing against the engine and causing a short. When they replaced all the fuses the car sparked and smelled of smoke with small flames by the fuse box. The mechanic ended having to replace the harness. But said that this maybe a universal problem as my car is only a 2005 mitsubishi galant. Of course it has 72,000 miles so it is out of warranty. *tr

Car stopped while driving. I took the car to the dealership and 8 hours later they said that the car was overfilled causing the filter and canister to be saturated with fuel making the vehicle stop. (although i know i did not overfill my vehicle) there is nothing in the owners manual or warranty warning not to overfill the gas tanks and that it will cause car failure while driving. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 mitsubishi galant. The driver side headlights have failed three times within the past 12 months. The first failure occurred while driving 15 mph. The contact has taken the vehicle to the dealer everytime the failure occurs, but they could not determine the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was 31,000 and current mileage was 51,000. Dt*: the contact stated, on two separate occasions there have been multiple times the abs/tcl (traction control) has disengaged without warning. Each occurrence was at different speeds. The dealer's service technicians have inspected the vehicle on several occasions. Updated 8/9/2006 - the traction control light disengages while at speed with or without cruise control on, the consumer feels that the abs system is also at question. The dealer inspected the vehicle and did a diagnostic check. There were no signs of corrosion, dtc's and all pcm's were ok. The passenger rear door makes noise when opening.*nm

I feel there is a dangerous defect in anti-skid brakes. I have contacted mitsubishi and feel their response is inadequate. Anti-skid function failed during two emergency stops and almost resulted in rear-end collisions. Anti-skid function also actuates when there is no braking condition that warrants it to activate. *jb

The vehicle has a consant squeaking noise and a slight vibration when braking. I have contacted the local mitsubitsi service department 4 times about this concern. I know that it is not the brake pads because i have changed them 4 times and the vehicle only has 27000 miles. I was told at my last visit that i should have reproted this problem before the vehicle had 10000 miles. However, when i told the service clerk that i had, he advised me that they had no record of it, only that i had taken the car in for oil changes. I feel that my vehicle is unsafe. It is not normal for a vehicle do the above described when braking.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 mitsubishi galant. The contact stated that the vehicle pulled to the right when being driven. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and had it test driven. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was performing as designed. The contact believed that the torque on the front passenger side axle was too tight and causing the failure. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 15,000.

My son became trapped in the rear passenger seat belt of my 05 galant while driving. I pulled over to release the seat belt and it refused to unlock. Every attempt to remove my son from the seat belt caused his breathing to be further cut off, at which time we had no choice but to cut him out of the seat belt. *jb

Nothing extraordinary leading up to this failure but on the morning of oct 4th i was driving my 2005 mitsubishi galant ls at 55 mph and experienced a total power steering failure. Fortunately i was able to slow the vehicle down and pull off to the side of the road. I then opened the hood and there was a fluid covering the underside of the hood. I called roadside assistance and a tow truck was dispatched to pickup the vehicle and deliver it to a mitsubishi dealership, which happened to be metro mitsubishi in bloomington minnesota. Not that a statement by a tow truck driver is law but he mentioned that this is not the first time he has seen this issue and that it was his belief that there should be a recall on this vehicle as a result of this issue. Metro mitsubishi called me a few hours later to notify me that it was indeed a steering pump failure and they would not be able to get replacement parts until the next day which meant that i was now without a vehicle because this vehicle that i'm leasing is my only means of transportation. The pump was replaced but a steering failure at any time and at any speed is a very serious safety issue and needs to be investigated. I look forward to you response to this issue. Thank you douglas niznick. *nm

Bought a new mitsubishi galant 2005. At about 150 miles during the break in period i started to notice a vibration in the front. After the break in period when i could take it to a higher speed i also noticed a distinct shimmy in the steering wheel. The vibration is very pronounced between 70 and 80 mph. At this speed the vibration is noticeable on just about any road surface. The vibration is felt in the steering wheel shimmy and in the seat of the pants vibration emanating from the front. The complaint was initially addressed by the mitsubishi dealer by noting that two tires were out of balance and re-balancing. This did not work. Then the vehicle was sent to a tire specialist where a road balance was done and one tire wheel combination that could not be balanced the tire was replaced under warranty through yokohama. The problem did not go away. Mitsubishi was contacted and the regional manager for mitsubishi ordered to replace the yokohama tires with michelin. I allowed a break in period for the tires and this has not solved the problem. The tire specialist noted that it could be a bad front axel or transmission engine mounts. At this point i feel it is a defect since the work done while consistent with bad tires or unbalanced tires has not solved the problem even though there has been several re-balancings and a new set of tires by michelin. The problem of front vibration and the shimmy in the steering wheel continues. *nm
