  Newmar corporation (newmar) is recalling certain 2018-2019 essex and new aire, 2019 dutch star, london aire, mountain aire, and ventana motorhomes. The instrument panel brightness cannot be adjusted, possibly causing glare when driving at night. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard number 101, "control and displays."

These motorhomes are equipped with kidde plastic-handle or push button 'pindicator' fire extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable.   Issue: on certain motorhomes built on a freightliner chassis, the driver may not be able to dim the lights on the instrument panel to a low level. As a result, light from the instrument panel could cause glare while driving at night. Canadian regulations require that the instrument panel lights can be dimmed to a lower level. Safety risk: glare from bright instrument panel lights could reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective actions: newmar will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.

  On certain motorhomes built on a freightliner chassis, an incorrect valve stem stabilizer may have been used on the single drive axle. This could result in the incorrect stabilizer to become dislodged from the wheel and allow the valve stem extension for the inner wheel to contact the outer wheel, potentially causing damage to the valve stem. If the valve stem we to be damaged, it could cause a loss of air pressure in the inner tire, which may overload the outer tire and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: daimler trucks north america authorized service facilities will inspect and replace the inner wheel valve stem stabilizer as necessary.

  On certain motorhomes equipped with kidde fire extinguishers with black plastic handles and valves, the fire extinguishers may become clogged or require excessive force to activate. Also, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury, and fail to discharge. In case of fire, failure of the extinguisher to function could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: owners will be provided with instructions on how to inspect the fire extinguisher to see if it is recalled. Replacement fire extinguishers will be supplied by kidde directly. For the 3rd or 4th time, while driving on a straight stretch on the interstate at approximately 70 mph with cruise control enabled, clear skies, no rain, the collision detection system came on for a second or two, without anything in front of the vehicle. The system slammed on the brakes hard enough to throw us forward into our seatbelts, seemed to lock tires, and disengaged cruise. If the cars behind me had been closer it was enough of a brake that it could have caused cars to swerve or also slam on their brakes to avoid me. After realizing what happened i was able to get a picture of the collision detection light illuminated while at 65 mph. I disabled the cruise control and continued to drive. I witnessed the collision light illuminate 2-3 times over the next few minutes, without any obstruction in front of us. No bugs or anything else blocking the radar sensor on the front of the motor home. This occurrence was on i77 south of canton, oh. Previous incidents were on i-71 e near dayton, oh and i71w near columbus, oh. The attached image shows the collision light illuminated at approximately 65mph without obstruction in front of the vehicle.

The freightliner digital dash is too bright for night time driving. There is no way to turn down the brightness of the display enough to safely drive at night. The brightness of the display ruins night vision. It can be adjusted, but not nearly dim enough to make it usable at night.

Blinding instrument display. Unable to reduce brightness to a less then blinding output at night. Dangerous loss of night vision requires the display to be covered making for an additional unsafe condition. This is at all operating speeds and conditions.
