Known Recall Investigations
  • Failing headlights investigation # PE04020

Nissan and ford found that the original equipment headlight stainless steel bulb terminals may over time cause elevated contact resistance and overheat the electrical connector housing. This can result in a headlight flickering, bulb outage and heat deformation to the headlight connector. In april 1999, the supplier of the headlight for nissan and ford changed to a bulb using the stainless steel terminals that did not meet original specifications. On july 17, 2000, the supplier began using a bulb meeting the vehicle manufacturers specifications. This problem can affect independently either headlight but does not cause simultaneous failure of both headlights. The problem also does not affect front parking lamps. As a result, the complaints typical report single failure of one headlight. There are no crashes or loss of vehicle control reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 nissan quest. While driving 70 mph, the front driver's side brakes locked up. The contact had a difficult time controlling the vehicle, but managed to drive to the dealer. The dealer stated that the brake hose was the cause of the failure and the braking components overheated. The dealer suggested that the rotors, pads, caliper, and hose on both sides of the vehicle be replaced. The repairs were made, but the failure recurred 8,000 miles later. He took the vehicle to a repair shop and they replaced the pads and turned the rotors. The mechanic test drove the vehicle and the driver's side brakes locked up again. The dealer replaced all the components again and recharged the contact over $300. The dealer currently states that the abs actuator needs to be replaced. The failure mileage was 108,000.

My wife was driving our 1999 nissan quest on the interstate the first time the driver front brake locked up. She drove the vehicle to stones river nissan of murfreesboro, tn where they replaced the brake calipers, hoses, rotors, and pads. The brake pads wore out after only 8k miles. Took the vehicle to a different shop to have a tire repaired and the pads replaced and the driver's front locked up again on the technician while road testing his repair. This shop insisted on replacing the driver front brake hose despite knowing it was relatively new. This did not work & they replaced the brake caliper (again) and gave up after it locked up yet again. They towed it to sr nissan, who diagnosed a bad master cylinder & replaced it. Driver front brake still locked up at the shop, now diagnosing bad abs actuator they say was caused by the seals inside the mc deteriorating. My opinion is that this is a design defect, if particulates from a mc can float and clog an abs actuator to the point that lockup of an individual brake occurs. Abs is supposed to prevent lockup, not cause it. The brakes are actually ford design and implementation. I know someone who also had a ford explorer and the passenger front brake locked up on her intermittently like my wife's has. The abs actuator is not available new anymore, my only recourse is to install a junk part which is most likely defective. I think both companies need to be investigated and i think nissan should have to find a new part and pay for installation costs. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 nissan quest. While driving approximately 15 mph, the engine shut off. The contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, it shut off again and was towed to a mechanic. Twenty minutes after the engine shut off the check engine light illuminated. Four mechanics have diagnosed the failure and stated that the distributor cap was blown and caused by the ignition. The vehicle was purchased with a black box on the right side under the steering wheel. The black box allowed the dealer to shut the engine off if the payments were not made. A mechanic also stated that the black box should be checked and could also have caused the failure. The dealers mechanic quoted her $1,000 to replace the distributor cap and ordered the part for a higher price than quoted without her approval. The failure and current mileages were 155,000.

In may 1999, nissan corp sold me defective nissan quest. Every 2-3 years this vehicle develops excessive carbonous deposits in the part of the engine called the throttle-body assembly. These deposits cause the accelerator pedal to require increased effort to push the pedal accelerator down (sticky pedal). Being the only owner of this vehicle, i already had to clean the throttle-body 3 times. This defect was recognized and settled by nissan corp in class action in 2003, please see the copy of the first page of settlement letter enclosed. My dealership, rothrock, in allentown pa cleaned the throttle for the last, 3rd time in december 2003 at no charge, please see the copy of invoice enclosed. The throttle needs to be cleaned again. My latest discussion with nissan rep, erica, 1-800-647-7261 ext 57741, file n 5812745 was on 8/10/07. Nissan refuses to clean at nissan's expense explaining that a diagnosis must be performed first for $70.00 per hour. I consider this nissan?S offer as a deceptive way to avoid the responsibility to fix the nissan's defect at no charge to me. *tr
