Note:
Vehicles with the N55 engine: only those equipped with the Bosch high-pressure pump are affected.
The different N55 variants can be determined by the vehicle's plant integration level:
N55 with Continental HDP - older (less) than Xxxx-12-03-500
N55 with Bosch HDP - Xxxx-12-03-500 and newer (higher)
The exception is the F30, which began production with the MEVD1726 DME (Bosch HDP) at plant integration
level F020-11-11-500.
SITUATION
The Service Engine Soon light (MIL) can be illuminated with the erroneous internal and Valvetronic faults stored
in the DME.
The MIL will only come on if the fault has been detected on two (or more) consecutive drive cycles.
The following fault codes may be stored in the DME:
E Series
z
36AE – DME, internal fault, Valvetronic: Current implausible
One or more of the following secondary faults may also be stored:

2DE2 – Valvetronic, actuation, voltage phase: Line disconnection
z
2DE3 – Valvetronic, actuation, volt phase: Line disconnection
z
2DE4 – Valvetronic, actuation, volt phase: Line disconnection
F Series
z
1F0905 – DME, internal fault, Valvetronic: Current implausible
One or more of the following secondary faults may also be stored:

135B10 – Valvetronic, actuation, voltage phase: Line disconnection
z
135B11 – Valvetronic, actuation, volt phase: Line disconnection

Engine performance and driving characteristics are not affected.
CAUSE
DME software diagnostic sensitivity
CORRECTION
Perform diagnosis using the latest version of ISTA.
Program the vehicle using the latest version of ISTA/P.
The erroneous faults will no longer occur with DME software integration levels equal to or higher than those listed
below:

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

If a vehicle control module or component was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to vehicle
programming and it fails to program correctly and/or requires initialization, this additional work must be claimed
with separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.
Repairs to address control modules and/or components with pre-existing conditions are not eligible to be claimed
under the defect code listed in this bulletin.
Other Repairs
If performing ISTA diagnostics and related test plans results in other eligible and covered work, claim this work
with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
