Technical Background
Transmission fluid temperature sensor malfunction leading to increased throttle needed to maintain performance with
possible decreased fuel economy.
Service
If the transmission fluid temperature sensor has excessively low resistance, the Transmission Control Module (TCM)
will falsely interpret a high transmission fluid temperature reading. This may not be a sufficient variance to set a fault
code but will result in the torque converter clutch constantly attempting to lock up to reduce the fluid temperature. The
driver will likely interpret this behavior as a lack of performance and react by applying more throttle, which may also
lead to poor fuel economy.
To diagnose the issue:

Check transmission fluid temperature in measured value blocks against the engine coolant temperature
reading, after an overnight cold soak. They should read the same.
If transmission fluid temperature is significantly higher:

The sensor is likely defective and should be replaced.
You also may see that the sensor reads consistently high and does not vary during a test drive. This sensor is often
integrated into the valve body harness. See Elsa for replacement procedures.
