Purpose:
This bulletin provides information for vehicle owners that have a Dana series 172 or 175 rear axle without a
lubricant drain plug in the bottom of the axle housing.
Notice:
• This bulletin should be read and understood in its entirety.
• All procedures outlined in the bulletin must be performed by skilled service personnel. Refer to the product
service manual for descriptions of maintenance procedures.

Perform your company’s Lockout/Tagout
procedure. If your company does not have a
Lockout/Tagout procedure, follow OSHA
1910.147 and 1910.146 Confined Space as
appropriate.

Information:
Upon release of the Dana Series 172 and 175 axles, the lubricant drain hole/plug was incorporated into the carrier
of the axle assembly, see Figure 1. Dana eliminated the bottom drain hole/plug in the axle housing bowl to avoid a
potential leak path.
The axle housing incorporates a large high-powered magnet to prevent metallic wear particles from flowing within
the axle system.
Drain the lubricant from a Dana Series 172 or 175 axle using the drain hole/plug located in the carrier of the axle
assembly.
Drain plug torque: 250 ± 15 ft. lbs.
