23PBB – Bendix 2.1m Medium Duty Brake Pedal Plunger: NHTSA #23V087, TC #2023-070 Number Edit Clone 23PBB Supplier Bendix Description Bendix 2.1m Medium Duty Brake Pedal Plunger Date 2/17/2023 What’s New Safety Recall The brake pedal plunger which connects the brake pedal to the brake valve may dislodge after the pedal is fully depressed, and rapidly released (side slip foot brake release). If the plunger in the brake pedal assembly dislodges the driver may be unable to apply the service brakes, which may increase the risk of a crash. Introduction If the brake pedal plunger becomes disconnected or jammed, the operator may not be able to apply the service brakes. Situation 4,209 (4,015 U.S. and 194 Canada) 536, 537, and 548 chassis manufactured between 6/16/2020 and 01/25/2023. Resolution Safety Recall Service all affected chassis that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis. 1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list. 2. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” or "In Process" next to the “23PBB” campaign code prior to performing this repair. 3. Follow the procedure to add the brake pedal restraint within the repair procedure. Federal Law It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected. Warranty There is no time or mileage limit for this recall. Peterbilt will pay for parts at dealer net plus applicable mark up and labor: • 0.3 hours labor to add the brake pedal restraint per the repair procedure and ensure working status of the brakes. Peterbilt has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020 through 2023 Model Year 536, 537, and 548 chassis built from 6/16/2020 through 1/25/2023 and equipped with Bendix air brakes. The brake pedal plunger which connects the brake pedal to the brake valve may dislodge after the pedal is fully depressed, and rapidly released (side slip foot brake release). If the plunger in the brake pedal assembly dislodges the driver may be unable to apply the service brakes, which may increase the risk of a crash. The risk of the brake plunger dislodging may be reduced by slowly releasing the service brakes and not allowing the pedal to release rapidly. What is the problem? The plunger dislodging in the brake pedal assembly may result in the driver being unable to apply the service brakes. What will your dealer do? Add a brake pedal retention device per the repair procedure. What should you do? Please contact your closest dealer to schedule this repair. Peterbilt Motors Company has initiated this recall to remedy the issue with no charge to you. Your dealer will add a brake pedal retention device to the existing brake pedal assembly so that the pedal plunger remains in its proper place during braking events. Peterbilt a constaté qu’une défectuosité reliée à la sécurité automobile est présente dans certains châssis de modèles 536, 537 et 548 des années 2020 à 2023, construits entre le 16/06/2020 et le 25/01/2023 et équipés de freins pneumatiques Bendix. Il est possible que le piston de la pédale de frein qui relie la pédale de frein au clapet de frein se déplace une fois que la pédale est entièrement enclenchée et relâchée rapidement (dégagement du frein au pied par glissement latéral). Si le piston dans l’assemblage de la pédale de frein se déplace, il est possible que le chauffeur ne puisse pas appliquer les freins de service, ce qui pourrait augmenter le risque d’accident. Le risque que le piston du frein se déplace peut être atténué en relâchant lentement les freins de service et en ne permettant pas à la pédale de se relâcher rapidement. Quel est le problème ? Un piston que se déplace dans l’assemblage de la pédale de frein peut faire en sorte que le chauffeur soit incapable d’appliquer les freins de service. Que fera votre concessionnaire ? Ajoutera un dispositif de retenue de la pédale de frein selon la procédure de réparation. Que devriez-vous faire ?
