Customer statement:
Foreign objects inside a headlight or tail light (Figure 1).
Figure 1: View of foreign objects (e.g. insects) inside of the tail light.
Workshop findings:
• Foreign object(s) are visible inside the lamp.
• No external application of force can be detected.
Technical Background
To ensure a temperature exchange can take place, as well as sufficient air circulation, the headlights and tail
lights are designed as open systems. This requires ventilation openings in the housings; these openings are
subject to continuous improvement processes which aim to ensure that foreign objects such as insects cannot get
into the lights, or that it is at least very difficult to do so.
Such foreign objects have absolutely no effect on the condition, function and service life of headlights and tail
lights.
This is a visual complaint which can only be seen with difficulty from a reasonable distance.

Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
Attempt to remove the foreign object(s) before replacing the affected lamp.
Procedure for headlights:
• Open the service flap(s) and remove control units or attachments to gain access to the inside of the headlight.
• Working with the utmost care, try using a vacuum cleaner or a pneumatic gun (oil-free compressed air is a
mandatory requirement) to remove the foreign objects by suction or by blowing them out. If this is not possible,
try to move the foreign objects to where they cannot be seen within the headlight.
Procedure for tail lights:
• Remove the tail light which is the subject of the complaint.
• Where possible, remove the dust caps on the tail light housing.
• Working with the utmost care, try using a vacuum cleaner or a pneumatic gun (oil-free compressed air is a
mandatory requirement) to remove the foreign objects through the ventilation openings by suction or by
blowing them out. Shaking the light slightly may help. If this is not possible, try to move the foreign objects to
where they cannot be seen within the tail light.
Headlights or taillights replaced for this concern are subject to review, which may result in the warranty
claim being denied.
