    • Ford Motor Company - Electric power steering failure Defect Investigation # PE14030

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation to investigate complaints of the loss of power steering while driving. The subject vehicles are equipped with a rack mounted electric power assisted steering (epas) unit. Some of the complaints alleged that the steering assist failed and resulted in increased steering efforts that contributed to a loss of control and in some cases a crash. The epas system was manufactured by trw automotive for ford and was designated as generation i.These units were first produced and put into vehicle production in july 2008 beginning with the model year (my) 2010 ford fusion and mercury milan. The system is comprised of a mechanical steering rack-and-pinion gear with torque sensor, electric assist motor, motor position sensor and a power steering control module (pscm). The pscm is self-monitoring and designed to detect faults within the system and can store diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) if a problem is detected. There are 29 potential dtcs the system can detect. Many of these allow the system to go into reduced-assist steering mode by using the default vehicle speed signal should the live speed signal be lost, if voltage to epas system falls below 10.7 or goes above 17 volts, the temperature at the pscm goes above 105c (221f), or if high friction is detected. Some dtcs will cause the system to go into manual steering mode (no assist). On july 1, 2015, ford filed a defect information report (dir) identifying a safety related defect in trw gen i epas systems installed in some of the subject vehicles (nhtsa recall 15v-340, ford no. 15s18).The dir indicated that intermittent electrical connections caused by quality issues associated with conformal coat contamination and ribbon cable pin misalignment within the steering gear motor may lead to a loss of the motor position sensor signal, resulting in a sudden loss of power assist while driving. The recall covers approximately 393,623 vehicles built from september 2010 through february 2012:2011-12 fusion built sep 2010 - feb 2012; 2011-12 lincoln mkz built sep 2010 - feb 2012; 2011 milan built sep 2010 - dec 2010; 2011-13 taurus built sep 2010 - feb 2012; 2011-13 flex with 3.5l gtdi engine built sep 2010 - feb 2012; and 2011-13 mks, mkt with 3.5l gtdi engine built sep 2010 - feb 2012.The repair consists of updating the pscm software to prevent a loss of steering assist while driving. The revised software will provide audible and visual warnings to the driver. If one or more of the following dtcs are stored, C1B00-62, C200B-2f, C200B-61, C200B-62, C200C-2f, C200D-49, U0300-00, U2011-49, U2011-61, U3000-46, U3000-49, U3000-61, U3000-72, U3000-96, P07AE-09, the dealer will replace the epas system at no charge to the owner.Odis analysis of failure data for this pe identified a total of 2,584 complaints to odi and ford and 9,967 ford warranty claims related to the alleged defect. The recalled vehicles account for 1,634 of the complaints and 7,311 of the warranty claims.Odis analysis identified 40 complaints alleging crashes that may be related to loss of steering assist while driving, 20 of which involved vehicles included in fords recall. The information available for the alleged crashes were not sufficient to assess specific causes of the incidents or to verify epas malfunctions in each case. Most of the crashes were low-speed impacts with curbs or roadside objects resulting in wheel or minor body damage.None of the injury claims indicated medical attention was required. In addition, statistical modeling of the failure data by nhtsas national center for statistics and analysis projected 10-year failur

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 60 mph, the 'lane detection failure' message suddenly appeared and the power steering failed. The steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. After stopping the vehicle and restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found diagnostic code: C200D and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the local dealer. The vehicle was taken to jones Ford of north charleston (5757 rivers ave, north charleston, south carolina), but the code was no longer present after restarting the vehicle several times. The cause of the failure could not be determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.

Steering fault service now and service advancedtrac warning lights came on while driving 40-50 mph on highway. Steering became very difficult and unsafe. Slowing down and taking a corner on side street to get home was extremely hard to turn steering wheel. Turned car off. Restarted and everything back to normal. Brought in to dealer as my wife has some upcoming trips and wanted car safe. They said scan showed U0420 and C200D. The dealer said fault was the angle sensor and that was part of steering gear assembly. Whole assembly required replacement. Dealer advised there was a recall applying to same issue on 2013 Taurus but not currently on 2015. Called Ford customer service and they advised the same as dealer and recommended reporting it to nhtsa. Cost $2757.43 to fix a serious safety issue and re-alignment.

Was pulling up to a stoplight in town, the in dash lit up with "electric steering assist fail" and my steering wheel stiffened up as if i lost power steering, i stopped, cycled the key and the power steering returned. There was no prior warning or in dash lights to this incident. A week went by with no incident or sign of trouble. Was reversing out of a parking spot 7 days later and the same problem occurred. I cycled the key again, and the problem went away. I just left the Ford service center and and they pulled the code C200D:49. Since the latest incident, there has been no problem. I declined the repairs as they were $2200 and i know Ford has recalled previous years of my vehicle for the same exact problem.

Lost steering assist during turn into driveway. It was extremely difficult to manually steer the vehicle, which i was able to stop due to the low speed. The next morning it was again very difficult to steer the vehicle when i backed out of the garage, however, after stopping and starting the vehicle 2-3 times the power steering begin working again allowing me to drive the vehicle to the Ford dealership. While driving the vehicle forward in their maintenance bay the steering assist failed again, at which time two computer failure codes where present, which i read and then showed to their maintenance representative. The code listed on the receipt was C200D. The second issue involves erratic shifts and loss of power when accelerating from a stop up to 35 mph. A Ford dealership has completed two-three computer software upgrades. The most serious shifting problem occurs when pulling out or turning onto a roadway and there is minimal acceleration when the accelerator pedal is pressed down, and the vehicle is unable to adjust as expected to the traffic flow. This problem was first reported 02/2013 and most recently during 09/2013.

When starting, console displayed "power assist steering failure". Power steering would not work. Required turning car off and on again (sometimes multiple cycles) to get the power steering working. Ford dealer read code C200D (steering gear internal failure), which required a new power steering rack. Ford did pay half of the bill, but my half was still high at $863. I was told this failure would not occur during driving, however i had read and heard this was not always the case. Therefore i had it fixed before it failed while driving or completely failed which would require a tow. This should not happen with a car with 40,000 miles on it and just over 3 years after purchase. This component has no dealer replaceable parts which means the consumer has an expensive repair.

2011 FORD FUSION with 69000.0 miles

Sudden loss of power steering. Messages show power steering assist fault and service advancetrac. Advantrac led is lit on console. This is an intermittent problem that started on 10/23/2013 at 69,000 miles until it finally failed completely on 7/14/2014 at 86,700 miles. Between october, 2013 and july, 2014, it could fail at any moment at any speed. There were approximately 30 instances of power steering loss during this time. I found out that the problem would go away when i stopped the car, turned it off, and restarted. It would clear the messages and the power steering would work fine until the next incident. My Ford dealer stated that they couldn't fix it until they got the fault code. I would have to bring in when it was in the failed state. Needless to say, it didn't conveniently fail when i was near my Ford dealer during business hours. This is a serious safety issue that many other Ford Fusion drivers have experienced. It was very stressful driving the car without power steering. The code fault is C200D. The steering rack (ae5z*3504*ce) needed to be replaced to fix the problem. I had to pay for the repair. My Ford dealer provided some reimbursement, but i think this should have been a recall to cover all costs because it was a known a safety issue. There is a recall for sudden loss of power steering on explorer and escape, but not Fusion. Why not? It's okay for Fusion owners to drive with an increase risk of crashing, but not explorer or escape owners? The car is awful to drive without power steering especially at low speeds.

I was making a left turn at approximately 20mph when my power steering went out. Luckily there was no car to my right and i was able to muscle the car to the right side of the road and onto a side street. The dash board was flashing power steering assist fault, then service advance trac. I turned off the car and restarted it and the message cleared. I went straight to the dealership and showed them the pictures, the dealer did a epas diagnosis, it said code C200D:49, and an interactive diagnosis pinpoint test, it said internal electrical failure, they replaced the epas rack and pinion. I received my car back today and it appears and feels like it's turning fine.

I was traveling 45 mph on a dry, 2 lane, macadam road no shoulders when my power steering went out. "advance trac" light on, chimes & message: "no power assist". I drove with no power steering for 5 miles,10 mph to a safe place to park. Car off for over an hour, started & had power steering. Slowly drove 33 mile home. Ford dealer next day: no definite codes, power steering now working, could need a pscm, they called Ford engineers hot line. We were told it could be a fluke, never happen again; best to drive car in with power steering not working. Repair cost $1500. We did not repair, knowing others had this problem even after repairs. Didn't drive car except for short, low-speed trips. 5/1/15, needed to drive the turnpike 65-70 mph & reached destination with power steering, but 7 hrs later, we started the car, "no power assist", no power steering. I called the dealership to have it towed - told them i wouldn't drive without power steering on the turnpike. They said to let it rest a bit - we did, 20 min, and it worked. Drove home; did not drive again until i took it to the dealership and told them they could have it until it did it to them. Which it did eventually. Dealership notes from 1st service: "cau ids tested fault codes U0100-20 C1963 -20 abs lost communication with". Notes from 2nd service: "cor pcm C1277-20 C200D rotation angle sensor circuit malfunction fault traced and replaced power steering control module steering gear assembly program and verified repairs." i had informed service of the recall pending, and they assured me, we would be reimbursed if recall does happen. No problem with power steering since 5/12/15 (repair date) however, the windshield wipers quit working 5/18/15 and did not go on until next day. I wonder if this is another 'glitch' & fear for what will glitch out next. If i could, i wouldn't drive this car, even though it had the repair.

Went to back out of the driveway for work, and got an alarm and the power steering assist fault indication. Turned the wheel and had no assist. Returned to the driveway, shut the car off, and contacted ford dealer. Was informed that while there was a recall in effect (15s18) my car was not covered, so i would have to pay full price. Not sure how i can have the exact problem, including the dtc C200D which indicates replacement is required. And not be covered. Was able to drive to the dealer (about 2 miles) for the repair. I am hoping you insist that ford expand this recall since it is occurring outside the current vin listings. I'm just glad it didn't happen at speed on the highway at rush hour.

Upon leaving a stop sign during a left hand turn, i experienced complete power steering failure. I was able to get off the car road where a restart of the engine returned the steering . A "power steering assist failure" and "check advance trac" illuminated on the dash. It happened twice more without the check advance trac light. A trouble code of " C200D" motor rotation angle sensor was set. Ford remedies the problem by erasing the trouble code. The problem returned once more on october 6th, 2014.

Power steering failed multiple times over the past year while daughter driving on highway between 60 - 70 mph. Display was power steering assist fault and service advancetrac. She was able to pull over and restart car to clear and problem went away. Power steering failed for the last time sept 27, 2017 and cannot be reset. Mileage is close to 114,000 now. I "muscled" the car to the Ford house on september 30 for diagnosis. Codes Ford pulled are C200D:49 and U3000:96. Ford recommended "replace steering gear (internal failure) and 4 wheel alignment after replacement". Cost roughly $1825.00 plus tax. I declined service and i now have a 7 year old car i am still making payments on sitting my driveway. Some "great first car" for my college student. Seems like this car should have been included in the safety recall i read about on here. I have a 1997 Ford truck with 315,000 miles on it - i have taken great care to keep it on the road and the power steering has never once failed in that amount of mileage / years.
