2012 FORD FUSION with 60000.0 miles

Vehicle loss power steering while driving. Vehicle revert to manual steering mode while driving. It was so dangerous, not able to drive safely. During my investigation i found that Ford already had recalled for similar fault for certain vins range but not for all vins ( recall notice : 15s18/nhtsa recall 15v-340). Unfortunately my vin is included in the recall vins. This already happened three time in my car, i took my car to mechanic they found following two error code C1277 (power steering angle sensor) C1963 (stability calibration - 1&2 circuit failure) i am attaching all three invoices from all mechanic garages where you can find their findings.

Reversing vehicle as in a parallel parking maneuver with steering locked, service advancetrac warning displayed. Vehicle operated normally but turn signals would not stay on when activated. System automatically reset later after vehicle was shut off and restarted but warning returned during same type of maneuver. Dealer diagnosed code C1963 and C1B00. Steering rack and pinion (aka steering gear) was replaced. Code C1B00 indicates issue with steering angle sensor. The electric power assisted steering (epas) in the f150 has no serviceable parts so when the sensor goes bad, the rack goes bad. Very coincidental that Ford recalled 2014 f150s for a similar problem (see nhtsa recaii14v316.)

While turning onto a highway my car began to lurch. I pulled over and had assumed there was an issue with my brakes. As a precaution, i had the car towed back to my home. I then took the car to an auto shop to have the breaks inspected. The technician told me that the breaks were fine but that he had found the following codes: C1963, C1963-eo, and C1278-20. I discovered that there was a recall for steering related issues with 2012 Ford Fusions. While at a Ford dealership i was told my car did not apply to the recall and was quoted $3,800 for the repair. I was told the car was not safe to drive and that the wheel could come off without notice.

Known issue, safety recall for sudden loss of power steering 15s18, 14s06 and supplement and15n01 extended. Ford motor company will only repair the safety issue if certain internal fault codes are present indicating that certain components are defective, unfortunately there are more components that fail causing power steering loss, 2 codes that presented that resulted in power steering loss are C1277 and C1963 but these are not covered by the safety recall according to Ford. The issue is safety and all components that cause the sudden loss of power steering need to be covered under the safety recall and repaired at no charge to the consumer. I believe that Ford is skirting their responsibility to repair the the defective autos using the internal fault codes as an excuse. It doesn't matter what code is present when power steering fails as the codes are not the safety issue. The steering gear in this Fusion was replaced 8/2017. The power steering failed again and was towed to Ford in 3/2018, and the software was updated at owners expense and once again the power steering failed and was towed to Ford in 3/2018 and according to Ford the steering gear was replaced yet again at the owners expense, then the next day failed once more and the towed once more to Ford. Ford claiming that the first gear replacement closed out the recall. That is 4 power steering failures in the same car. Ford refuses to take responsibility for the defective components and has instead shifted to cost to the owners. There are hundreds of consumers that have faced this issue. The safety recall is not having the desired effect of repairing the issue and now Ford is playing a waiting game as the vehicles are reaching the 150 thousand mile threshold where by Ford will refuse to repair the problem. There are about 500 thousand of these defective cars on the road today and we are no safer.

I was traveling 45 mph on a dry, 2 lane, macadam road no shoulders when my power steering went out. "advance trac" light on, chimes & message: "no power assist". I drove with no power steering for 5 miles,10 mph to a safe place to park. Car off for over an hour, started & had power steering. Slowly drove 33 mile home. Ford dealer next day: no definite codes, power steering now working, could need a pscm, they called Ford engineers hot line. We were told it could be a fluke, never happen again; best to drive car in with power steering not working. Repair cost $1500. We did not repair, knowing others had this problem even after repairs. Didn't drive car except for short, low-speed trips. 5/1/15, needed to drive the turnpike 65-70 mph & reached destination with power steering, but 7 hrs later, we started the car, "no power assist", no power steering. I called the dealership to have it towed - told them i wouldn't drive without power steering on the turnpike. They said to let it rest a bit - we did, 20 min, and it worked. Drove home; did not drive again until i took it to the dealership and told them they could have it until it did it to them. Which it did eventually. Dealership notes from 1st service: "cau ids tested fault codes U0100-20 C1963 -20 abs lost communication with". Notes from 2nd service: "cor pcm C1277-20 C200D rotation angle sensor circuit malfunction fault traced and replaced power steering control module steering gear assembly program and verified repairs." i had informed service of the recall pending, and they assured me, we would be reimbursed if recall does happen. No problem with power steering since 5/12/15 (repair date) however, the windshield wipers quit working 5/18/15 and did not go on until next day. I wonder if this is another 'glitch' & fear for what will glitch out next. If i could, i wouldn't drive this car, even though it had the repair.

Traveling at 55mph, when the service power steering now and advance trac light came on,, no power steering,,made it home,, tried it again in the morning still no power steering, had it towed to a Ford dealer, who said they cleared the codes and cant duplicate the problem,, the 4 codes stored were P07AE, U0415,, C1277,, C1963,, we live a rural area with no guard rails and between 20 to 150 foot drop offs,, if this would have happened to the wife,, which is her car to drive,, she wouldn't be able to steer this vehicle,, took me all i had to get it home,, not very confidant on letting her drive this car,, Ford needs to resolve this problem.

While driving and under no particular common conditions, the dashboard, instrument gauges, interior lighting, headlights, navigation panel suddenly begin flashing and blacking out. Then after a few seconds, come back to normal, but typically with a "traction control service" message on with the trouble light remaining on. This happens about every 10 minutes of driving. Once in a while, it lasted longer and clunking noises seemed to come from the drive train. However, a few occurrences were while turning and the power steering was out. I took it to a belle tire nearby and they could not fix the problem, saying the dealer had to update the abs module and gave me a printout of tsb 12-11-18 [attached scan]. They circled diagnostic trouble codes C1278 and C1963 as the ones that popped up in their analysis. I find no recalls of this item, but the steering issue is certainly dangerous.

While traveling on a side road, the dic stated 'service power steering' then ' service advanced trac', shortly after the steering locked up and it displayed 'service power steering now'. Luckily i wasn't mid turn or my vehicle would have gone off the road or into on coming traffic. After restarting the vehicle there was no change in the condition. My obd reader displayed codes C1277 and C1963.

Driver error notice "service power steering now" displayed immediately, followed soon by "service advancetrac." just barely kept the vehicle on the road, avoiding a rather large ditch. Local mechanic diag revealed the following relevant diag codes: * C1277 (invalid or missing data for steering wheel angle sensor) * C1963 (stability control inhibit warning).

From a stop, i rapidly accelerated to 40 mph. While attempting to stop at red light i had to apply excessive brake force to stop. The engine was running at high rpm with foot off accelerator. I had to turn off ignition to prevent going into intersection. Then a few minutes later i was on highway going 70 mph and set cruise. I took my exit, pressed on brake to turn off cruise. The exit speed was 45 mph. I was not slowing down and pressed brakes very hard to reduce speed. The engine was still racing high speed as i was approaching a stop light. I had to place trans. In neutral and switch off ignition. After starting engine again rpm idle was normal and problem did not re-occur all the way home. On 7/25/13 i turned in truck to homer skelton Ford in olive branch, ms. With a detailed description of the event to service personnel to inspect or repair vehicle. (this was a first event since oct. 2012) i found a code C1963 in computer using car md and loaded defect onto web site for my records.
