P0217

Engine Overtemp Condition

DTC P0217, sometimes indicated as P021700 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the air/fuel mixture causing engine overtemp condition.

There are a few things that could cause this code: a faulty cooling fan, a clogged radiator, a faulty thermostat, or low coolant levels. If you have an overheating problem, it's best to have a professional mechanic diagnose and fix the issue.

2017 FORD EDGE with 60100.0 miles

My engine had to be replaced because coolant was leaking into cylinder 2. This is a known issue to Ford and a recall should have been issued. 2017 FORD EDGE with 60000.0 miles

Ford Edge ecoboost 2.0l coolant light came on around 60k miles, while driving. Service shop found code P0217(engine coolant excess temperature). Later took it to Ford dealership and they advised coolant is leaking from engine and a new engine would be required.

2017 FORD FUSION with 72890.0 miles

I have a 2017 Ford Fusion titanium with the 2.0l ecoboost engine that has 72,890 miles. I experienced rough idle for about a week then my check engine light came on. I had the engine light checked and showed the code P0302 which is a misfire in cylinder 2. When i proceeded to leave the place of business where i had the light checked white smoke came out of my exhaust upon start up and was still coming out by the time i drove home. I proceeded to do my research over the next couple of weeks following and found out it is a known issue and Ford will only cover if under power train warranty, even though it happens outside the warranty time frame just as much as with in the warranty window. I proceeded to have my car towed to the dealership and a diagnostic done and they said that everything i stated above is exactly the issue along with the pcm self-test showing P0217 engine over temperature condition was detected, and the engine long block assembly does have to be replaced.Nothing showed up on my dash to warn me of overheating or anything of the nature. Only the check engine light appeared.

2017 FORD EDGE

Coolant leak into cylinder. Manufacture defect. Known issue by Ford but will not cover any replacement as vehicle is out of warranty by 7000 miles. A 2017 with 67000 driven by a grandma 5 mph under the speed limit should not need a new engine. Engine light comes on. Misfires. Puffs of white smoke. Didn’t take to dealer as closest if 1/2 hour away. Took to local repair shop. They ran codes and said it is a known problem from Ford. Nhtsa id number: 10162071 manufacturer communication number: tsb 19-2208 summary some 2015-2018 Edge and 2017-2019 fusion/mkz/escape/mkc vehicles equipped with a 2.0l ecoboost engine may exhibit a low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and/or a runs rough condition with or without an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (mil). To correct the condition, follow the service procedure steps to replace the long block engine assembly. This needs to be a recall or at least Ford needs to cover the replacement costs for those with issues.

2003 NISSAN ALTIMA with 66000.0 miles

My 2003 Nissan Altima with 83,700 miles was driven to a local dealership where i bought it used a little over one year ago. But prior to leaving home i read at the nhtsa website about similar problems i was already having, hoping this dealership would also have similar, if not, identical results. To my dismay, they had neither. Thereby no type of recall was showing on my model's history via the manufacturer, so i was told. My vehicle problems are as follows, per dealer diagnosis: tw catalyst sys-b1 (code P0420), engine over temp (code P0217), and cyl 1 misfire (code P0301). Furthermore, my complain essentially was about the car over-heating and taking longer than usual periods to restart, usually up to 10 minutes. This dealer said it could cost upward from at least $400.00 to fix either one of the problems which may still not correct them all. But the most serious was the catalytic problem that involves hot gases and debris being drawn into the engine instead of going out the exhaust, resulting in engine damage. The problems began when the check engine light remained lit after about 6 months of ownership. But the problem with starting didn't show up until the one year point. Just recently, i have purchased a tune-up as well as a new battery for my vehicle in order to remedy what i thought were owner service issues. Sadly, this local dealer either does not know about your recall or somebody is hiding this from not just them but from owners like me as well. I plan to call Nissan-1 tomorrow as they were closed after leaving the dealership. I hope no fire results from this or any serious problems relating to injuries as we try and resolve this issue. Thank you for your service in advance.
