P043E

Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Reference Orifice Low Flow

DTC P043E, sometimes indicated as P043E00 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the auxiliary emissions system causing evaporative emission system leak detection reference orifice low flow.

Possible causes for this DTC include:
- A leak in the evaporative emission system
- A plugged evaporative emission system
- A low reference orifice in the evaporative emission system
If a leak is detected in the evaporative emission system, it will need to be repaired in order to clear the DTC. If the system is plugged, it will need to be cleaned or replaced in order to clear the DTC. If the reference orifice is low, it will need to be replaced in order to clear the DTC.

I own a 2006 scion xa. I bought the car new off of the show room. After 5 months of owning the car the check engine light came on. I took the car back to the dealership that it was purchased from. They checked it with the code reader. The codes were P2401- evap leak detection pump stuck on, P043E- evap leak detection orifice low flow, evap leak detection pump stuck off, P2419- evap pressure switching valve stuck on, P043F- evap leak detection orifice flow high. The dealer replaced 4 parts fuel tank filler pipe cover, filler pipe cover holder, charcoal caniste, and charcoal canister filter. They replaced the parts at no charge. I drove the car for almost 2 years and now the light has come back on for the same codes. I now have to replace the same four parts in a car that is less then 3 years old.

2007 TOYOTA COROLLA with 130000. miles

Started car this morning and the check engine light came on. Took to parts store and hooked it up to the computer and found codes (P2401, P043E, P043F, P2402, P2419) everything i have researched comes back to evap canister failure, and possible wiring failure. More research shows these issues causing people getting stranded and others with no problem other then light, and others with a strong gas smell. If this causes a gas smell, then a potential fire hazard is formed.

2007 TOYOTA YARIS H/B with 125000. miles

Experienced failure of emissions evap system due to water intrusion through poorly designed components. Check engine lamp (cel) illuminated constant on during highway travel. Stored dtcs of P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, and P2419. Internet search reveled existing issue in tsb eg048-07 which notes water enters filler pipe cover, contaminates canister filter, then damages the evap pump located in charcoal canister. Repair requires an updated filler cover ($6), replacement of filter ($50), new canister ($600), plus 0.5hr of labor charges. Applicable warranty is 3year/36000miles. During repair replaced filler cover, filter, then cleaned entire system of water. Note: this yaris was already built using the updated filler cover p/n. Yaris failed the following test drive done in attempt to avoid expensive canister replacement. Followed Toyota service manual to troubleshoot canister which lead to permanent damage. Three bolts attach the pump valve to the canister via plastic threaded inserts. These inserts stripped inside the plastic, rendering the canister unusable. Replacing with new canister and retesting for repair. This portion of the emissions system is related to a mandated requirement. This failure should be covered under the longer term emissions warranty period and not this shorter term period. Failure of a $6 component resulting in victim failures of $650 in additional components is irritating to the consumer and irresponsible of the manufacturer. Customer has already noted that this event will affect (negatively) future vehicle purchase decisions. Note: this failure does not seem to affect mpg or operation but does illuminate the cel. Consumers might operate w/o repair which will condition them to accept an illuminated cel. They might not be notified of other obd malfunctions and partially disabled emissions control system.

2006 SCION XA with 46500.0 miles

Scion Xa 2006 with just 46000 (mostly highway!) miles did not pass emissions test due to diagnostic codes: P2401, P043E, po43f, P2419, P2402 indicating 'evaporation leak/emission problems. Toyota customer relations stated the repair was not under warranty and refused to help me with the cost of repair - see case #: 1310120509. The dealer charged me $588.39 (after a discount of $95.00 diagnostic fee) to install 'charcoal canister, fuel filler neck, fuel tank filler holder, & charcoal filter sub-assy.' the fact that it is standard for a car with less than 50,000 miles to fail an emissions test should not be considered in compliance with epa standards. Toyota is charging consumers the cost of repairing a defective evaporation system in order to comply with epa standards therefore the nhtsa should issue a recall of the defective product(s) - see tsb #: eg047-06. 2006 SCION XA with 60000.0 miles

Check engine light comes on. Dealership comes up with codes P043E, P043F, P0456, P0401,P0402, P2419 evap codes related to tsb eg047-06. However, this is not restricted to just this model and is caused due to a defect in the design of the fuel system, that allows water intrusion into the charcoal canister and the filter, leading to expensive repairs. Many other Scion models as well as other economy sized toyota vehicles share the same defect in the design leading to the service bulletin, which actually should be a recall so that this design defect can be fixed properly at the dealership by toyota. If neglected by consumers or if the fix is postponed due to it being so expensive, it can lead to serious safety issues related to the fuel system of the vehicle.

P043e, po444f, P2401,P2402,P2419 codes charcoal canister assembly failed seems to be a very common problem with this particular toyota model and toyota should pay for the replacement. Faulty equipment expensive to replace. Want toyota to replace these parts / tsb notice.

2006 Scion Xa check engine light with diagnostic codes: P2401, P043E, P043F, P2419, P2402 indicating "evaporation leak/emission problems." there apparently are service bulletins out on this issue and toyota will not acknowledge that this is a widespread issue with the Xa model. Toyota wants over $700 to repair a known defect and will not help with cost of repair. Toyota is charging consumers the cost of repairing a defective evaporation system in order to comply with epa standards therefore the nhtsa should issue a recall of the defective product(s) - see tsb #: eg047-06. 2006 SCION XA with 105000. miles

Bought a 2006 Scion Xa that previously had the charcoal canister assembly and fuel filler pipe cover replaced under tsb eg047-06. Cel was on when i bought the car, and the codes P043E, P043F, P2401, P2401, P2419 indicated the same components were damaged again. I replaced the components affected by the tsb, which included un updated part number for the fuel tank filler pipe cover holder (77248-52050). After clearing the codes, the car was fine for several thousands of miles until the cel came back on with the same codes. It doesn't make sense to continue replacing the charcoal canister every time these codes reappear. I cannot find any new information to indicate toyota has a permanent fix for this recurring issue, and i haven't come across any alternate fix on the internet that resolves it. I am contemplating some sort of work around to seal the canister and the electrical connections to prevent the water intrusion into the canister, but i also don't want to doing anything that will prevent the canister from functioning properly. I also don't want to ignore the cel in the event the cel stores other codes unrelated to this issue.
