owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 105863 [USA]: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain model year 2002-2005 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi sedans, and 325xi and 325i sportswagons, 2002-2006 330ci, 325ci, and m3 convertibles and 325i, 330i, and m3 coupes, 2002-2003 m5, 540i, 525i sedan, and 530i sedans, and 540i and 525i sportswagons, and 2003 x5 3.0i and 4.4i sports activity vehicles. Please note that the 5-series and x5 vehicles are only included if they are equipped with the optional sports steering wheel. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the vehicle has been remedied. Bmw will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driver air bag module, free of charge. The recall began aug 2016. Owners may contact bmw customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Note: this recall supersedes recall 14v-348 in its entirety. Additionally, vehicles that have had their driver side frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Note: on december 17, 2015 bmw removed the model year 2004 x5 3.0i and 4.4i sports activity vehicle from this recall. Those vehicles were mistakenly identified as including the air bags that are subject to this recall.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Air bag inflator rupture investigation as of 20150224

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe14-016 in june 2014 based on six inflator rupture incidents involving consumer owned vehicles produced by five vehicle manufacturers. All six vehicles were operated in florida or puerto rico at the time of the rupture and for the majority of their service life, and were equipped with inflators produced by takata, a tier-one supplier of automotive air bag systems.During the course of pe14-016, odi determined that five additional vehicle manufacturers used inflators of a similar design and vintage also supplied by takata. No evidence of field failures was found in vehicles produced by these five additional manufacturers.Nonetheless, at odis insistence, all 10 vehicle manufacturers initiated a regional recall within approximately two weeks of the opening of the investigation. The regions recalled initially included florida, puerto rico, hawaii, and the u.S. Virgin islands, areas with high absolute humidity and climatic conditions believed to be a significant factor in the inflator ruptures. As part of the recall actions, inflators removed from remedied vehicles are to be returned to takata for testing.Takatas initial test results on passenger inflators from remedied vehicles indicated a much higher than anticipated rupture frequency for inflators returned from florida.Accordingly odi requested all 10 manufacturers expand the regional recalls for passenger inflators to include other geographic areas where high absolute humidity conditions exist, including the gulf states and other coastal areas.Takatas testing of the passenger inflators to date continues to indicate this geographic area as having the highest risk, with no ruptures occurring from inflators returned from outside the expanded recall regions.During pe14-016 four additional passenger inflator field events occurred, all in vehicles from the same expanded geographic region. Also during pe14-016 four additional driver inflator field events occurred including two in vehicles from regions not known for high absolute humidity, specifically california and north carolina.Accordingly, odi requested all five of the affected vehicle manufacturers currently using the subject takata driver inflators expand to nationwide recalls.Significantly, neither of the affected vehicle manufacturers or takata provided any explanation to account for these two driver air bag inflator ruptures outside the area of high absolute humidity.Takata testing of returned driver inflators indicates a lower rupture frequency as compared to passenger inflator testing. All test ruptures reported by takata to date have occurred on inflators returned from high absolute humidity areas. The investigation now includes all manufacturers and vehicles known to be affected at this time.Odis investigation will focus on, among other things, root cause analysis, other potential defect consequences, identification of affected vehicles scope, and adequacy of the remedy. The five odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification numbers: 10537899, 10568848, 10585224, 10605877, 10651492

  • Rear lamp illumination investigation as of 20091218

In a letter submitted to the office of defects investigation (odi) dated august25, 2011, bmwindicated that it will conduct a voluntary recall campaign to remedy the subject vehicles. The issue involves the rear lamps in the vehicles body panel.Through normal vehicle use over time, the rear lamps ground wiring and associated 8-pin connector can experience an increase of the resistance at the electrical contact points. This can lead to intermittent or permanent loss of the rear lamp functions which include tail, brake, and turn signal operation. The recall consists of modifying the rear lamps in the vehicles body panel by adding a secondary ground connection in parallel to the existing primary ground connection. An 8-pin connector that attaches the primary ground wiring to the rear lamp assembly will also be inspected and replaced if necessary.Bmw will complete dealer notification in september 2011 and will begin owner notification in october 2011.All 3 series sedans (except for the m3 sedan which utilized a different rear lamp assembly) that were built between september 1, 2001 and march 1, 2005 are included in this recall, totalling approximately 241,000 vehicles. The action taken by bmw is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.

  • Rear lamp illumination investigation as of 20090807

Odi has received complaints from consumers stating that their tail light assembly is not properly illuminating. The tail light assembly consists of a turn signal lamp, a tail lamp and a brake lamp. The complainants have indicated that the issue is with an 8 pin connector and associated ground wiring. These components are allegedly overheating and melting due to excessive electrical current that runs through the system.Bmw issued a technical service bulletin (tsb) sib-630306 on february 2007 to address the condition by adding supplementary ground wiring to the tail lamp assembly.Odi is upgrading to an ea to further investigate the issue.

  • Delayed transmission engagement investigation as of 20040203

Ms. Claire m. Tieder of reston, va, submitted a defect petition to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) by letter dated january 11, 2004, requesting a defect investigation be conducted into delayed transmission engagement on model year 2004 bmw xi vehicles.Bmws response to nhtsas information request indicated that certain bmw 3-series vehicles equipped with the gm5 transmission may exhibited a forward park to drive engagement delay from2 to 30 seconds. However, the condition can occur only during a vehicle "cold start," after the vehicle has been at rest for more than eight hours.Drivers experiencing the delay have learned to take precautionary and compensatory measures.Bwm will replace affected transmissions exhibiting the delay, after the condition has been verified, with an improved unit.No alleged crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported to either bmw or nhtsa relating to this issue.Based on analysis of nhtsas consumer complaints and bmws data, the petition is denied. For details, see federal register, vol. 69, no. 91 (may 11, 2004).

"takata recall" i received notice of the recall by mail on 8/24/16 stating that i needed the driver and passenger side airbags replaced. I then proceeded to make an appointment on august 29th with global imports bmw located at 500 interstate n pkwy, atlanta, ga 30339. The service representative informed me that the parts were not in stock and would need to be ordered. However the recall notice did state that the parts were in stock and ready to be installed. I waited 2 weeks and never received a follow up phone call on the status of the air bags. I then called global bmw again, and they had no record of me calling, and claimed that they needed to order the airbags. This same exact issue re-occurred on my follow up phone calls on september 12th and 23rd. Then finally on october 3rd i placed another follow up phone call where once again they did not have my information, but did have a driver side airbag in stock. The customer service representative informed me that she would be checking on the status of the passenger air bag and give me a call. I called back the next day to check, and was told that they were not sure when they could obtain a passenger airbag. Over a month of phone calls and still nothing done. I am less than pleased and very concerned for the safety of me and my family while driving our vehicle. It has become obvious that bmw doesn't care about fixing the issue.

Nhtsa does not recognize the recalls on my 2004 bmw 325xi 4dr sedan. There were 2 recalls that are related to air bags. The nhtsa campaign numbers are #15v318000 and #14v428000. I would like to receive official confirmation that these recalls are valid so i can get the manufacturer to fix this. Please see the supporting docs attached. Also, i have been having weird electrical issues happening to the point the car wont shut off at times, headlights go out after a day, turn signal goes out, car dies, stereo wont work etc. I was wondering if other recalls were placed on this car as well?

The vehicle (1.6 turbo) has a hesitancy to engage in acceleration relative to pressing the accelerator pedal. Once engaged, it immediately jumps out to a quick, jolting and what feels like an uncontrollable start. This typically happens at stop/start intersections where the car comes to a full and complete stop. Yesterday, (07.20.16) the vehicle choked and sputtered and almost stalled on a small rise when traffic started moving through a just-turned green light at a very busy intersection during rush hour. The tachometer winds out in a manner disproportionate to the speedometer reading. This does not mimic the effects of a turbo lag. Rather, it feels like the vehicle isn't getting a timely delivery of gas to the engine firing mechanisms (we would liken it to a dirty fuel line or a clogged carburetor on older cars), or the dual clutch system is debating whether or not to get in gear when demanded, or whatever device that interprets driver commands (pedal pushing) to engine performance isn't responding efficiently. The car has had one shop visit for this issue and the dealer (werner hyundai, tallahassee) stated they 'reset the software." i will be taking the car back to the dealer the week of july 25, 2016. Unfortunately, i anticipate this issue will lead to a wreck, most likely from 1) being hit from behind as the car tries to figure out whether or not to accelerate, or 2) being t-boned at an intersection because the car won't accelerate through a rush-hour yellow light, or 3) being t-boned because my car launched (literally) out into oncoming traffic (that initially was at a safe distance away) once it got past the choke/sputter/stall point....Updated 08/01/16 *bf *tr

Bmw 325xi 2004, after substantial or unreasonable delay in the bmw return, was perceived to be rendered unsafe/unsatisfactory/incomplete, with airbag defects/spillover effects, or released with known defects to the vehicle that put the driver and unsuspecting occupants at risk of serious bodily injury up to death. Bmw was to send a 'consent form', then vehicle owner was to review/sign/return, bmw would then order 'interim airbag' parts, and repair. The consent form was not received or signed, june 2016, bmw enter/repair without authorization, or signed consent forms, and made unknown changes to the airbag/systems. The toxins remain has corroded it or released toxins/odor. The vehicle was on a 'cease & desist' airbag repair pending the receipt and execution of the consent form as agreed. Bmw failed to make the repairs per quote and airbag [i.E. Explosive device; sodium azide azium; shrapnel, etc.] was left in an unsafe state. The vehicle needs an inspection by nhtsa, as it is believed to be contaminated or corroded, by unknown toxins (i.E sodium azide or azium?). Persons exposed have contacted cdc/poison center who stated that persons not have further contact with bmw till inspected? See claim 10881628 for same/similar background. The owners were subjected to foreseeable toxins, from the airbag defects/recalls/ unauthorized repairs to the bmw, pending a "consent form", and has resulted in injury or medical care or poison control center consultations. The toxins had a 'sharp odor', overwhelming as reported, and exposure resulted in damages to persons or property, awaiting estimates to be completed. Importantly, exposure to sodium azide can be fatal and the vehicle needs an inspection by nhtsa or dot. If you do not inspect unsafe vehicles, with perceived safety concerns, please provide a referral or preferred source due to the serious public health and safety issues.

CrashNoY 1 InjuredNone20160623

Vehicle defects reported or recalled, bmw, oem, or other, yet with known defects was requested to drive an unsafe vehicle that is 'imminent danger' that can cause serious injury or death: airbags. Bmw replaced driver side airbag in 9/ 2014 then passenger side. Yet in 2015 accident, the airbags failed to detonate, and injury to persons/property occurred. Bmw recalled driver's side airbag (2nd repair/3rd airbag) in 2015 and parts are on back order. Bmw has the 'defective vehicle' (i.E. Other issues engine, seat belts, etc. Remain) and provided a bmw loaner car through their affiliated partner (toyota's jv alliance) enterprise in good faith pending repair. In june 2016, a 'cease & desist' was placed on the bmw, in part, due to a federal investigation or injury (i.E. Defective airbag- explosive device~shooting shrapnel) that leaves 'driver in harm's way'. One could infer 'attempted murder' if the driver is placed behind the wheel of a defective vehicle or airbag: millions of recalls. I am a material witness and am reporting intimidation, threats, hostility, and bullying over the bmw or defective airbags. This has resulted in professional defamation, personal injury, financial distress, and sabotage in various instances (to be reported in separate package to be sent to investigator due to confidentiality). The most recent occurred around june 23, 2016 when bmw/enterprise rental car stating "grand theft" of the vehicle in their possession or awaiting a swap? Simple fact that bmw stated that an 'interim fix' was approved by dots but needed signed consent forms-- was sending them to me. Bmw did not follow procedures, 'unauthorized entry, removal, destruction' of airbag with a 'cease & desist'. On 6/24/16 going to enterprise/alamo-orlando was no issue/no unpaid bill. This did not stop continuation of harassment or retaliation (e.G. Asef) unconstitutional or uncivil conduct.

While driving in normal rush hour traffic my wife heard a loud pop from the engine compartment. The car lost power, brakes. She started to coast to the side of the road when other commuters started to yell at here to get out of the vehicle, at that time the cabin started to fill up with smoke. She tried to lower the window but that had lost power also. She was able to drive the car into the snow at the side of the road to stop it and then exited the vehicle. The 325xi started to burn and shortly was a total loss. Thank god she got out ok but was traumatized by the incident. Since this happened we have found many similar fires documented on the web. *tr

The driver's side seat belt repeatedly stops when extending. It can take 10 to 15 attempts to get it to extend long enough. These failures cause drivers to "give up" and not bother to use the seat belt. I have spoken with bmw and they want $500 to replace the seat belt. I believe this is dangerous and a flaw in the design. *tr

The driver's side seat belt does not extend from the housing. It stops repeatedly and only after several tries will it extend long enough to be latched. The situation may cause a driver to not use seat belts as this can take a long time to finally extend. I contacted the dealer and they suggest it might be a mechanical problem which they are willing to diagnose for $150 and then fix for an unknown amount. It would this is a potentially serious safety issue. There has been recalls for a similar problem in other bmws but not this model. For example, refer to nhtsa item number: 10041411 and nhtsa item number: 10037487 *js

The driver's side rear tail light assembly failed. Received a warning indicator light on the dash panel. Replacing the bulbs in the assembly failed to correct the problem. Researching this issue i discovered there has been an equipment recall for failed tail light assemblies. *tr

2004 bmw 325xi electronic door locks fail to unlock intermittently whether i am outside the car or inside the car. The key fob will intermittently not unlock the doors. The internal mechanisms will not unlock the door including the door handles themselves once the lock is engaged. The failure is an electronic issue and is a significant safety issue if i cannot get out of the car. *tr

A year ago, i brought my 2004 bmw 325 xi in for routine maintenance. When i picked the car up, the bmw shop explained that they found premature failure of the cv outer axle boots. Both boots were split and leaking grease, and the axles were turning dry.. They replaced both boots under warranty. In december 2010, car was vibrating while riding. They stated they had to replace the right front cv shaft (axle). They did this and the vibration stopped. Naturally, this was not covered since my certified car warranty expired in july 2010. I believe bmw should have discovered the defect to the axle when they found it running dry in january. In driving the car before the repair, i believe bmw put me in jeopardy by not repairing the axle. This could definitely be a hazard, riding on a shaky defective axle. *tr

This is a very common problem for this year and model bmw car. At just under 45k miles, the exterior tail lights at times fail to work. The lights have been changed etc. I get notified from the inside dash board. However, at times it is a false positive (dash says it doesn't work but in fact it is working). Then at times the warning lights switch from the left to the right tail lights. I am not sure when it is actually working and when it is not working - this is dangerous and bmw should fix this design flaw. This failure is due to poor materials usage (corrosion problem) and grounding like the other posts have mentioned. Apparently there is a class lawsuit against bmw for this. With all these complaints for the same problem, i don't understand how it has not been recalled for fixing b/c failure to signal when changing lanes is a violation because it is dangerous. Bmw needs to fix this. *tr

E46 bmw 2004 325xi and 2000 323i both have issues unlocking doors when weather is above 50 degrees. Vehicle wont let you unlock doors from inside and manual unlock is only for drivers door and must do so through window. If there were an accident in the car i don't know how i would have escaped in a reasonable amount of time. People in the back seat are forced to crawl into the front of the car and out the driver door. No manual unlock is available to any door but the drivers door. *tr

My 2004 bmw 325xi sedan was about to carefully back into a service bay from just outside the garage door. Aware of the need for precision and care (there were people and items near the bay), i shifted into reverse, then very gently stepped on the accelerator pedal. There was a momentary hesitation, then the car began to go backward slowly for about a half second and then, without any action on my part, the engine suddenly roared to life and the car went backwards at tremendous speed. Within about two seconds it had gone back some 40+ feet and, because i had turned the wheel a bit before moving the car, the rear pivoted almost 90 degrees and ran into a garage side wall another 40 or so feet away. An employee may have been brushed as the car hit the wall near him. The event happened so quickly and unexpectedly that i had no time to even step on the brake. I am a skilled driver and at no time did i step hard on the accelerator pedal. Major damage to trunk, rear panel and two doors occurred. In my ca 50 years of driving i have had only one previous accident. That was in february 2007 when, as i shifted into reverse in an icy parking lot, a gentle push on the accelerator resulted in a sudden racing of the engine and resulted in very rapid backward rush of the car. It hit a brick wall behind it and resulted in major rear end damage. It was the very same car as in the 2009 accident described above. The 2007 event was attributed to ice on the pavement and not further investigated. The car was then fully repaired by bmw in rochester ny. *tr

Unreliable taillight/brakelight/turn signal functioning in 2004 bmw 325xi. Problem began in early 2008. Lighting indicators kept coming on suggesting taillights were out. Replaced all applicable bulbs several times over the past year then finally brought to dealer. They said that they have seen many of these instances where they need to replace carrier, harness and add a ground wire to fix the issue in order to get lights working again. Dangerous at night. Unfortunately no recalls, however, this is not a normal wear item and if a dealership needs to go back in and change wiring to make it work, than it's simply a design flaw and the consumer should not be responsible. Needless to say, $700 later, i had to get it fixed to ensure safe driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 bmw 325xi. The wire that plugs into the driver side rear tail light harness burned which makes it impossible for the driver to alert others of his intentions regarding direction of travel and speed. Technical service bulletin # 10020856(exterior lighting:tail lights) summarizes the failure. The failure has not been remedied. The current and failure mileages were 59,770. Updated 12/09/09 *bf the consumer stated the same failure happened on the passenger side. There was insufficient grounding which caused the burnout of the tail light wiring.

This is a formal petition for a safety defect investigation. My 2004 bmw 325xi has a left tail light that does not work because of a poor connection at the rear lamp connector (the ground wire receptacle and housing have burnt out because the ground is not strong enough for the current). My right tail light still functions but i am concerned about this side burning out as well and posing a possible fire hazard. Bmw has issued a service bulletin (si b 63 03 06) which addresses this issue and says that the cause is "minor corrosion at the 8-pin rear lamp connector creates high resistance causing damage to the connector housing." bmw has not issued a recall and i am worried about getting into an accident without a properly functioning tail light. *tr

I bought bmw 325xi 2004 on 03/04 and i noticed that it has problem with cold start. In the morning, when i put the car in "d", it doesn't move and then suddenly lurches with a jerk. First i thought, its just because its a new car but when i didn't drive it for 3 days and started it, it was worse. It wouldn't move at all for like a minute and then suddenly lurched forward with a jerk almost hitting the car in front of me. I took the car to the dealership and they told me that all 3 series manufactured between 03-03 to 11-03 have this problem and it is due to the transmission . What i don't understand is if there is a recall on that. They didn't tell me about this problem at all whereas now i read the message boards and there have been a lot of similar complaints. I wonder what my options are? I bought the car because there was a special deal on this car. May be the deal was because of this issue. *jb

I purchased a 2004 bmw 330xi and had two problems that surfaced immediately. When calling the dealership, they brushed off the complaint stating that the car was new and it would "settle" given time. However, after the problems continued, i brought the car into a dealership who, upon inspection, told me i simply needed some new parts. One being a transmission (which i think is more than just a part). Apparently, there is a directive to bmw dealerships highlighting the problem, but to deal with it only upon customer complaint. I find this very troubling given the nature of the problem(s) and the potential safety issue should the transmission completely fail. The issues are as follows: 1. After only 2,000 miles, i had put an additional 7 quarts of oil in the vehicle. Apparently, the oil valve is defective and needs to be replaced. 2. When first operating the vehicle, the vehicle often would not begin to move until the rpm's reached anywhere from 3-5k rpm's. In both instances, the bmw dealer stated this was due to a defective "part". The replacement of the oil filter makes sense as it is a part. The complete replacement of a transmission, however, does not. Although i did not have an accident, i believe that these issues can potentially lead to a major problem and therefore respectfully request an investigation. *jb

I filed a petition for a defects investigation as well as a complaint about problems with a 2004 bmw 325xi with a defective transmission, resulting in delayed engagement as well as "lurching" of the vehicle when accelerating and/or braking. Vehicle went back for repair - after had slight delayed engagement again, part fell out of the steering column, loud flapping noise started in the right side of the dashboard, the transmission failure warning light has been coming on - 2300 miles on it and has been out of my possession 4 weeks of the 3 months. The va office of consumer affairs has suggested pursuing the state's lemon law. The bmwboard on-line has many similar complaints and a portion of my petition (the addendum) was posted, giving the impression that bmw is voluntarily recalling the affected vehicles ... I was told that might happen, but i am not aware that it actually has happened. I have also been told that cars manufactured after december 2003 are free of the defect ... From what i have been reading on this auto safety hotline and the bmwboard, that is not true. Beware. If i am the only one who has filed a petition, but you are reading this and you are having similar problems with your 3 series or x5, file a petition, too ... That's the only way to get some action from bmw ... This is a powder keg. I bought the car on dec. 15, 2003 and have had problems from day 1. This is not going away ... I have given it time; bmw has had the opportunity to correct the problem ... With a lot of input from me ... Because they have told me basically that i'm imagining things ... I'm not ... And still i have a new problem every time i get in the car. This is wrong ... Please speak up. The dealerships seem to be uniformly "pooh-poohing" the problem. That is wrong.

The bmw 325xit (automatic transmission) which i purchased on 2/5/2004 developed a problem with forward gear not engaging on a cold start. The vehicle had less than 1000 miles on it when i first noticed the problem. Typically on a morning when i back the car out of the garage, and then shift the gears from reverse to drive, the vehicle fails to move forward for 3 to 4 seconds upon releasing the brake. I would have to press down on the gas pedal and watch the engine revv to anywhere between 3-5k rpm before the gear would engage. The vehicle creeps forward until the gear fully engages. The problem has no far been rather consistent - it happens quite predictably every morning. I have not however noticed a problem with gear engagement once the car is able to start.*ak
