Known Recall Investigations
  • Air bag non-deployment investigation # PE14017

There is no summary currently available

  • Fleet vehicle recall completion audit investigation # AQ10001

On november 18, 2010, nhtsas recall management division (rmd) opened an audit query (aq10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.Rmd queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (ford, chrysler, and general motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated documents link above. In december 2015, congress enacted the fixing americas surface transportation (fast) act.One section of the act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the fast act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.

  • Engine stalling investigation # EA07007

On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.According to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.Chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. Information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.Odis analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.Odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.Information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once. The interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. Although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim. The stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).Chryslers recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate. The remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. Odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents. This analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged. No specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. This investigation is closed with chryslers recall.

  • Engine stall investigation # PE07009

Odi has received 76 vehicle owner complaints alleging incidents of engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles (subject vehicles). Some of the complaints reported one or more incidents of engine stall with a simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems, including headlamps. Two engine stalls resulted in a vehicle crash. In its response to a request for information, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) indicated that it has not determined the cause of engine stalling in the subject vehicles and that it hasformed a multi-disciplinary task force to investigate the issue. This investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea07-007) to further assess the frequency, scope and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.

  • Petition re: unintended acceleration investigation # DP06002

Odi received a petition requesting a defect investigation concerning unintended acceleration in the 2006 jeep commander stemming from a fatal incident that occurred in delaware in december 2005.After a careful review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, odi finds no evidence to indicate the influence of a manufacturing defect.Likewise, no similar complaints concerning this model exist in the odi complaint database.Accordingly, the petition is denied.Odi reserves the right to revisit this issue in the future should circumstances warrant.

Ignition switch recall which was issued on my jeep commander was addressed and ultimately an appointment was made upon availability. However, since the recall, the jeep will not function normally upon initial start up attempt progressively into more attempts thereafter. Connection between key switch and cylinder not responding to connection, lack thereof. This occurred at first seldom to more and more random periodic "no signal, no start". Recalls are supposed to fix the initial severe problem, correct? Not result into another problem that wasn't present before, right? Found my time fruitless in getting clarity of this issue resolved from dealer. What can i do? What should be done? As the consumer we will feel the job done wasn't done correctly. Fact is there were not any start up issues prior to the recall addressed and ignition switch replaced/fixed?

The fuel tank skid plate is rotting away, this could cause the tank tank to fall out of the vehicle, this looks like a very common problem with a number of jeeps and dodge products.

2006 jeep commander limited 5.7l v8 message as appears on dash - transmission over temp while driving a short distance the message transmission over temp appears, the fan kicks on high & is very loud, and it feels like the transmission disengages like being thrown into neutral, but is still drivable. About 2 weeks prior, i noticed smoke coming out from under hood & the engine coolant tank was almost empty. There were no visible leaks on carport. I refilled the tank & immediately called kilby automotive repair shop, then took it in. They said that the radiator cap needed to be replaced. The also said the valve cover gasket was leaking. They replaced the radiator cap & made an appointment for june 3rd to replace the valve cover gasket. Before that appointment the vehicle started displaying the transmission over temp message. I took it into kilby automotive on may 27, 2021. They said it was a faulty transmission temperature sensor, but they could not repair. They have done a lot of repairs on the vehicle for several years. I called ultimate luxury auto service explaining the issue. The man said that he could put a new sensor in & there is a broken transmission mount. He replaced the sensor. Fix mount later. When i was driving home, the same message appeared & the fan kicked on as before. I messaged the shop & took the vehicle back in. They put a 2nd sensor in, drove it & received the same transmission over temp message. They returned the 2 new sensors & put my original sensor back in. They said they were sorry they could not fix it & dropped the price of repairs. I entered the make, model, & message online & found out a lot of people have the same problem. Some people have said they replaced numerous parts & it did not fix it, and others say they replaced the pcm. I am disabled and do not want to be stranded or have a vehicle fire. I am afraid that it would pose a risk to me & others, as transmission oil can ignite on hot surfaces and cause a fire in the engine.

My vehicle died in the middle of me driving without warning. I was on a main road turning into a mcdonald's when my car died. I was going about 20 when my car died. My steering locked up, couldn't brake or accelerate, and had to pull over and turn my car off to and back on to get it running again. Once i got my car started again the idle kept pulsating above one thousand rpm and would have to keep it in neutral at a stop so it would lurk forward.
