  • Recall 2005028 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the speed control deactivation switch may overheat, smoke, or burn, potentially resulting in an underhood fire. The condition may occur either when the vehicle is parked or when it is in operation. Correction: initially as an interim repair, owners will be instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected. As soon as replacement parts are available, owners will be instructed to return to the dealers for installation of a new switch or fused wiring harness.

  • Recall 2004164 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles, ford has issued a scheduled maintenance guide update which specifies that every 20 000 kms, the steering linkage, which includes tie-rod ends, should be inspected. The vehicle owner is asked to place the tie-rod end inspection procedure supplied with this maintenance guide update in the vehicle's glove box for reference and safekeeping. The vehicle owner is to provide the inspection procedure to their repair facility to help properly identify worn tie-rod ends. Performing the vehicle scheduled maintenance, including maintenance inspections, is the responsibility of the vehicle owner. Failure to replace worn tie-rod ends may eventually result in a tie-rod end separation that could adversely affect steering control. If the inspection reveals that a tie-rod end is worn and must be replaced, the repair will be at the owner's expense unless the vehicle is still covered by the basic vehicle warranty, or has an extended service plan coverage that includes these components.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

On 12/03/11 when my husband started our 2002 lincoln navigator a loud bang happened, my seat belt tightened across my chest so tight it hurt and i couldn't breathe, the car started smoking so bad that my oldest daughter jumped out of the truck because it scared her so bad. The seat belt was so tight it wouldn't come off at first which scared me because the smoke was by the side of my head! Now the seat belt won't work and i don't want to use my car without it. In the past year, 2011, my truck keeps blowing fuses on the automatic lights and air bag for the passenger side. I keep replacing the fuse but they only last about a week and then they blow out. Once the fuse is replaced the automatic lights work, the airbag light goes off. But, no sooner do i change it, it blows again. So, i haven't replaced it. In february i have to go for emissions and i won't pass with this light on. In the last 6 months, my bright lights have turned on by themselves. I thought it only happened when we use the turn signals, but my husband told me it does it all the time. I didn't believe him until three days ago when i hit a bump and they went on. Then, yesterday i was sitting in our running, parked car and the brights just turned on while the car was on and not moving. That really scared me. What kind of electrical problems does this vehicle have? I have done the one recall on my truck for engine fire. Are there more recalls i should know about? *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving on the highway 75 mph the driver's side tie rod snapped. As a result, the vehicle shook and the contact lost control of the steering. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who determined the driver and passenger side tie rods needed to be replaced. Updated 10/17/2006 - the passenger's side tie rod was loose. *nm

Used car purchased with new car warranty (36000 miles). Car inspected after purchase by lincoln dealer, but 4000 miles later engine seized. Sludge was found to be in engine. No warning of engine shut-down prior to seizure. Ford denies warranty claim due to sludge in engine despite proof of vehicle being serviced by prior owner. *ak

I won a 2002 lincoln navigator on an ebay auction and paid $19,000 for the vehicle via direct wire transfer through my bank. The lincoln navigator advertisement represented the vehicle as "like new in every way", "our mechanics have inspected this truck and found everything to be in excellent working condition" & "options: driver & passenger airbags". The vehicle is in poor condition. The airbags were deployed and not replaced. Radiator has two holes in it, the manufacturer warranty is voided, keyless remote missing, cd magazine missing, owners manual missing, floor mats do not match, numerous scratches, dings & nicks. I was told it had climate controlled seats and it does not. I was also told that the seller is a private party. Unfortunately he is a dealer thus i will have to pay sales tax of $1,064. I have corresponded with the seller via email and telephone numerous times. I have asked him to buy the vehicle back from me or pay for the repairs and he says that he does not have the money. All-in-all the seller's misrepresentation of this vehicle will cost me $8,647. *ak

I think this is a common tactic by ford and the justice department should look into it. I leased a new 2002 navigator and had a similar situation. On a road trip in 2004 with 32000 miles, the engine seized. The dealer claimed there was sludge in the engine and ford would not honor the warranty. Apparently, the lease included free oil changes at the dealer, which i was not aware of. I produced all of the receipts to show that i had the oil changed every 3000 miles (more frequently than required) but was told it was irrelevant since i didn't have the dealer do the oil changes. I was told the engine replacement would cost $12,000. The ford dealer was so upset by this he offered to do it for cost, about $4500, but i just walked away, even though they sued and put a $15,000 blot on my credit rating. This was my third navigator lease, including a 1998 and 2000 model before this. I paid top dollar for their most expensive vehicle and this is how they treat good customers. Not to mention being stranded in the desert with my wife and five kids. I will never buy another ford again. One last point - i had just had the oil changed before i left and had less than 1000 miles on the car when it broke down. I checked the oil and it was more than 1/2 quart down. Clearly the car was using oil at just 32000 miles. Funny thing is, i have a 97 explorer with roughly the same engine, and it finally threw a rod at 250,000 miles of excellent service. *tr

Complete tread came off the tire leaving it to drive wtih exposed steel. Tire did not lose air and vehicle was safely brought to a stop. Tire was returned to dealership where after serious negotiation (arguement) they agreed ford had warranty and they replaced tire and are going to repair body damage from the incident.*ak

When initially starting motor it revs high, and upon take off engine continues to rev high. After having the motor mounts replaced, the problem still persists! The dealership has now found a "knocking" sound in the engine and said it would need to be torn down. Since then they are now saying that they cannot duplicate the noises and nothing is wrong. Only a few days ago they notified me of the knocking noise, which i was unaware of.*ak
