• Recall 110642 [USA]: If the ignition switch overheats there would be an increased risk of a fire.
  Mazda north american operations (mazda) is recalling certain model year 1989-1998 mpv, 1990-1995 323, 1990-1998 protege, 1992-1993 mx-3, 1993-1995 929, 1993-1997 mx-6, and 1993-1998 626 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, grease applied to the contact points inside the ignition switch may become conductive and overheat.
  mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on december 17, 2015. Owners may contact mazda customer experience center at 1-800-222-5500, option#6. Mazda's number for this recall is 8715j.

• Recall 60260 [USA]: In the presence of an ignition source, a vehicle fire can occur.
  Certain spx filtran fuel filters with a 45-degree angle inlet tube, model 800f350-s1, sold as replacement filters for 1993-1997 ford probe,1993-2001 mazda 626 and mx-6, and 1983-1994 loyal, 3-door coupe, hatchback, sedan, wagon, brat, dl, gl, gl-10, rx, xt, and xt6 passenger vehicles with efi or turbo engines. These filters are packaged as wix, napa, and carquest brand fuel filters. Certain spx filtran fuel filters with a 90-degree angle inlet tube, model 800f300-s2, sold as replacement filters for 19983-1994 subaru vehicles with efi or turbo engines. These filters are packaged as wix, napa, and carquest brand fuel filters. Fuel may leak from the filter due to non-conforming brazing welds where the inlet tube is connected to the filter can.

  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with the sas sensor unit. These vehicles can experience air bag deployments in minor undercarriage impacts.
  dealers will reprogram the sas unit to reduce the probability of unnecessary deployments in low speed undercarriage impacts.

  Carbonised grease may accumulate between the contact points in the ignition switch reducing the insulation performance inside the switch. In this condition the switch may generate heat resulting in smoke and in the worst case a fire.

  On certain vehicles, a defect in the ignition switch could cause an electrical short to develop over time. This could result in smoke and/or fire, increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will replace the ignition switch.

• Recall 1999057 [Canada]: Fuel supply
  Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements of cmvss 1105 - evaporative emissions. Fuel vapour may leak from between the fuel cap and the fuel filler pipe. The gap could be generated by improper dimensions between the top ends of the inner and outer pipe of the fuel filler pipe. In some cases, raw fuel would be released into the atmosphere. Correction: dealers will install a modified fuel cap o-ring.

  In may of 1997, odi upgraded to an engineering analysis with 51 complaints.Odi is now aware of 88 complaints of alleged inappropriate airbag deployments.Typical complaints allege that the airbags deployed after the vehicle hit a pot hole at between 20 and 45 mph, or that the airbags deployed while driving at between 20 or 60 mph for no apparent reason.Approximately 25 drivers alleged that they did not hit anything in the roadway.Mazda will conduct a safety recall ofall 1995 and 1996 models of the mazda 626 and mx-6, as well as a small number of 1997 mazda 626 models, equipped with the same sas unit.The sas unit controls the airbag systemit contains a built-in crash sensor to detect vehicle deceleration during a collision.Affected models were assembled from june 1, 1994 through september 10, 1996 and have a vin within the following ranges: mazda 626:1yvge22**s5300001 through 1yvge22**v5599030 mazda mx-6: 1yvge31**s5300001 through 1yvge31**t5589965all owners will be notified of the possibility that their vehicle may experience an unnecessary airbag depoyment in certain situations.They will be instructed to bring their vehicle to a mazda dealer to reprogram the sas unit to reduce the frequency of unnecessary deployments.

  In january of 1997, odi opened a pe based on 9 odi complaints.Odi is now aware of 51 complaints of alleged inappropriate air bag deployments.Typical complaints include air bag deployments after the vehicle hit a pot hole while driving between 20 and 45 mph and air bag deployments while driving at speeds between 20 and 60 mph for no apparent reason.Approximately 21 drivers alleged that they did not hit anything prior to the air bag deployment.In four of these incidents the driver claims to have lost control and hit a curb after the air bags deployed.In addition there are four incidents where the driver alleges that the air bags deployed after a tire blowout while driving.Less common incidents include allegations of the air bags deploying after parking the vehicle and removing the key, crossing railroad tracks, while being towed, while braking, after hitting a curb, and after hitting a manhole cover.Odi is upgrading this investigation to obtain additional information about the reports gathered to date, the sensors used in the vehicles, and to assess the impact that the alleged defect has on highway safety.

Hi i have a 1996 mazda 626 lx and the o/d light just went off at 176,000 miles. I read several forums online and they all said its most likely a an electrical problem in the transmission. This can b very dangerous to us drivers as well as drivers next to us on the road. The automatic transmission in my 1996 mazda 626 failed. As i did research i found that the transmission had failed once before with a previous owner. Further research has shown me that the "cd4e" transmission in my car is a "known" defective part among owners of this particular car. I only had enough money to have it replaced with a used transmission that was the same "cd4e" and can only hope that this one will hold up for awhile. The total cost was about $1200 and i still have the old transmission just in case i need to have it rebuilt. This particular transmission is very hard to find due to its unreliability, meaning they are in great demand because they fail frequently. Thank you for your time. *tr

I purchased my 626 in 2003. I wish i would have done research beforehand. I installed a transmission oil cooler the same week. I'm also religious about changing the fluid. I only drive in town, less than 10 miles per day. My o/d light started blinking as i was driving at 25 mph. I stopped at a light to make a turn and my car would not drive. The transmission would not allow the car to move forward. I shut the car off hoping that when i started it again that it would go. Thankfully it went this time and i made it home. I have a 96 mazda 626 that is having constant problems with the transmission. I had it checked out and am being told that it was the catalytic converter that would cost well over $400 because i needed the mazda branded one from a dealership. Also the transmission switch is faulty. Which the guy i had looking at the car, had no idea what that was and had never heard of it. When you start driving it's fine then about 15 minutes in to it starts jumping like as if i am pressing on the gas to go 50 from 15. It has done this on several occasions and every time i try to fix it something else comes up. I was told by another person that the transmission is failing and that mazda 626's have a faulty transmission from years 95-00. *tr

The transmission on my 96 mazda 626 just started acting up one day it will work fine until it warms up then it starts slipping badly eventually acting like its in neutral. On my 1996 my mazda 626 i was driving on the highway and my overdrive light started flashing. I am having problems with my automatic transmission in my mazda 626 lx 1996 model. I bought this used car on jan 2006 and it started to give problems by showing o/d lights off. Then check sign popped up and i fixed that one. Again popped up and found torque converter failure. I took it to transmission shop and they quoted $1700 to change the transmission. In online, i read many complaints about transmission and it advised to use this site to file a complaint against mazda company. Many people had the same problem like me and this raises safety aspect of this vehicle, which is a manufacturing defect. 4th time in 6 years, od light starts flashing after driving for approx 1 hour on highway. Shifting is not with motor, temp remedy is to manual shift. I was driving on 131 north about 75-80 mph and my airbags (both sides) deployed. There is no damage and i did not hit anything. I received burns on my nose, on my lips, sprained jaw, bloody nose, burns on my wrist, and facial scrapes and contusions. My car has a little less than 90,000 miles. Every time i drive this car for more than 30 miles or so, sometimes less if having to speed and slow often, my over drive light begins to flash which also makes the transmission shift erratically. If i pull over and restart the engine to stop the light from flashing and it begins to flash again shortly after my check engine light will also comes on. Normally after a week or so the check engine light will turn off by itself. My husband and i had the throttle body cleaned about a year ago thinking that was the problem when one day my car decided while sitting at a stop light that i could not keep an idle strong enough to keep the motor running and i then have had to start placing my car in neutral for stop lights and rev the engine while the light was red to keep from stalling. We have not replaced the transmission, though i am aware it should have been done long before now. We simply do not drive the car for more than 20 miles at a time. If we are going 30 miles or more, i have to stop half way to turn the engine off for several minutes to let the transmission rest. I feel that mazda has been completely irresponsible, unethical, and reckless in allowing loyal customers to continue to loose faith in mazda's quality of standards. I would assume that the loss in amount of profits and business for years of past and years to come would easily outweigh the damper to profits that would have resulted from doing the right thing and compensating mazda owners for the hard ships that have been caused by a much needed recall and lack there of. My husband and i now are in the market for a new vehicle, most likely an suv, and while mazda before now was our first vehicle make of choice, it will now not only be last but mazda will not be an option at all. As i assume others have come to the same terms, we will not place trust in a vehicle used to transport our children that we can not rely on for safety and dependability. *nm

I have 1996 mazda 626 lx, 4 cylinder. At 100,000 (in 2004) transmission had to be replaced. I got new one with 30,000 miles on it. It lasted only 10,000 miles more. My friend with a mazda 626 from 1996 had the transmission replaced after only 50,000 miles. *jb

I brought my 1996 mazda 626 into hoehn mazda of carlsbad, ca for a specific code (P0441-evap emissions control-incorrect purge flow). The dealership mechanic pulled a code of P0741- slipping torque converter. They said i would need a transmission replacement (which would be the third or fourth for this vehicle). I stated that may be a problem since the overdrive light had been blinking and also stated that there was a service bulletin on these particular transmissions. Soon after i checked my car's vin number on carfax and noticed a note placed by mazda that this car had no recalls on it. Hoehn mazda told me that this was a good thing as it meant that my particular type car was ok. I interpreted it to mean that this was a warning to dealerships not to do any "free work" on my mazda. These ford transmissions (cd4e) really do need a recall. I believe the fix is a better pump (sonnax) and have seen many, many complaints regarding this particular transmission over the years. I just want to add my own complaint and dissatisfaction with this particular dealerships treatment of a customer. They never diagnosed the original P0441 complaint and charged me $88 for the advice on replacing my transmission. How was this transmission treated? Fluid change annually or even more often; driven extremely gently, and failed like clockwork. *jb

My 1996 mazda 626 lx has 86k miles on it. I noticed a couple of months ago, it was leaking fluid (i thought it was oil), but it turned out to be transmission fluid, so i made an appointment to have it fixed. My car was finally fixed after almost 2-weeks in the shop and without a vehicle to drive. A couple weeks after having it repaired, and costing me $2,000 - i noticed that it is still leaking transmission fluid. My car gave me no warning (no lights ever came on saying there was a problem). 1996 mazda 626 with automatic transmission. The car has had what i consider early transmission failure. From what i have found out this is very common on this model and year mazda and was advised to file this complaint. *jb

Passenger side seat belt buckle split open causing the metal pin that holds buckle to the belt portion to fall out, causing entire buckle to fall off. The plastic casing is the only thing holding the pin in place but the plastic dries out with age and splits open. Reported to mazda, but they don't care. *nm

After already replacing my transmission once, i have to again due to another failure. The car has 125,000 miles and so far i have been out $2,900 just on prior repairs and am facing another $2,500. *jb

My over drive light has been blinking lately, and my wife two weeks ago had the light come on and stay on when returning from a trip on the interstate driving about 72 mph. At 121,000 miles and regular maintenance, my automatic transmission is about to completely fail in my 1996 mazda 626 lx. Doing online research and talking with the specialty transmission shop, i have learned that the issue with the mazda transmission type cd4e is well known by the company and documented in numerous complaints, yet mazda has done nothing about it. I am lucky to have this many miles on the car, where others have failed much worse, but as a consumer that does not drive abusively and that regularly (every 30,000 miles) has the transmission fluid flushed and replaced and the filter serviced, this is an expense that is definitely not my fault. And given that the manufacturer has known about this since the mid 1990's, it is frustrating. I am now spending between $1500 and $1800 to get a rebuilt transmission put in my car, along with an atx cooler that mazda recommended in 2002 but did not cover under warranty or even provide an extended warranty to install.*jb

First my transmission was slipping now the od light flashes when i drive on the thruway or any situation where im goin 50mph or more i have owned the car for less than a year

My car would not movie even if i keep it in r or d. Sometimes it move but after reaching a certain speed say 30 mph even if i press the accelerator it would not accelerate. It just sounds like i am pushing the accelerator in the neutral gear. I took it to the mechanic and he said that my transmission broke down and i have to replace it. *nm

My 1996 mazda 626 had transmission failure, it failed without warning, while driving. I contacted mazda and ford and was told that transmission failure was common with that model transmission and vehicle. I was also told that any repair of the transmission would be at my expense. I had the transmission repaired, to be correct it was rebuilt. My concern is that if ford and mazda know that there or problems with these transmissions why don't they extend warranties and inform there customers. Secondly why hasn't the federal government stepped in and forced them to take corrective action. My parents on a honda accord, honda has admitted that they have a problem with their v6 transmissions, my parents car had problems after 50,000 miles. Honda replaced their transmission with and updated one and extended the transmission warranty for an additional 100,000 mile after the repair. I feel that ford and mazda should do the same thing. With your help i hope that will happen. *nm

Drove the vehicle under normal operating conditions for 108,000 mile. Changed the transmission fluid at 100,000 miles. Transmission came apart at 108,000 miles. Had transmission rebuilt at a cost of $2600.00. *nm

I bought a mazda 626 new in 1996 i drive the car twice a week... The car has about 60,000 miles on it.. The transmission went bad. And i was told it was a common problem with the car... I looked this up and there are hundreds of complaints about this problem... Please do something about this, as i do not have the $2500.. And 3 1/2 weeks it take to do this repair... I have to do it.. I am the original owner of a 1996 mazda 626. I have already replaced my transmission 3 times in 8 years and looking at replacing it again for a 4th time. The car only has 150k miles on it. Purchased the vehicle (1996 mazda 626) at 27,000mi on odometer - transmission had gone bad. Because it was still in warrantee, the mazda dealership replaced the transmission. I took it back a few times over the past few years because of leaking transmission fluid and engine light being on. Nothing was found or done. Last december, at 96,000mi, the transmission burned out again. I took it to the dealership who said the transmission would have to be replaced again. This would be the 3rd transmission in under 100,000 miles!! As mazda would not assist in the cost of replacement, in july i had the car towed to a local mechanic who replaced the transmission with a rebuilt one. A few weeks ago (october 2004) the o/d light started blinking and i took it back to the mechanic who replaced the transmission. He searched deeper and found that the cupholder is placed directly over the car's computer, and had been leaking any spilled fluid onto it, shorting out the overdrive, causing the transmission solonoid to burn out. He cleaned the computer and replaced the tcc solenoid, mazda takes no responsibility even though their technicians had the car several times without properly diagnosing the problem.*ak

After buying the car (used) a year ago i first had to replace the 02 sensor, then while driving the o/d light would start flashing and the rpms went crazy between gears, after a restart it would go away only to do it again. This only lasted 2 days, so i thought it must not have been a big deal. Then this past weekend up in the mountains, it was driving fine until i came to a stop light, and the car would not go forward, i put it in the auto 1st gear then 2nd and it lurched forward only to go a mile before never moving again. I purchased this car used in november of 2002 with approximately 90,000 miles, transmission failed me in traffic in october of 2004, it presently has 131,000 miles. Transmission would seem to engage and then disengage very rapidly until it finally completely failed, and no longer would engage. I was just able to get off the street. Transmission shops est. Cost to be between $1200.00 and $2500.00 dollars to repair. I have not had it repaired yet. I have no knowledge of prior failures or complaints. I have since searched the internet and discovered that this is a common problem for this car and other cars such as the ford probe, which uses the same transmission.*ak

June 28, 2002 -- wellings mazda, richmond, in "performed recall ssp-34 air bag campaign. March 2004, matt castrucci's auto mall, "body electrical: customer states air bag light is on please check out and adv," and "custormer states car is running rough, was told valve cover gaskets are leaking and on the spark plugs please check out." results were: "checked out light is not on, no correction at this time." and "checked out replaced valave {sic} cover gaskets and intake gaskets cleaned spark plug wires and plugs. Rechecked ok" sept. 19, 2004 -- while motionless at a traffic light, both front air bags deployed. We do have reliable witnesses. The driver (me) is a physics professor, the right front passenger is a ph.D. Candidate, the left rear passenger is a psychology professor, and the right rear passenger just finished law school. There was also a pedestrian standing 3 feet away and a helpful driver in the adjacent (also motionless) car.*ak

Everytime i drive the overdrive light comes on and while driving it hesitste on freeyway i check to the mechenic he say its transmission problem and it is the problem with mazada 626 and never been corrected and they didnt buil t it correctly so i think mazada should bring them back

I bought a 1996 mazda 626 in the summer of 2004. I have had problems with the overdrive light coming on when i drive about 55 m.P.H. I do not have the time or money to replace a transmission! I bought the car for less than what a new transmission would cost. Now i am trying to sell this car and its not possible because it cannot be driven on the freeway. Something needs to be done about this, we need to be able to be given something to do to fix this problem.

I have a mazda 1996 626 lx sedan 2.0 liter engine with automatic transmission, 4 cylinder, front wheel drive. I bought it from a private party about 3 months ago at 93400 miles. I now have only about 96000 mikes and my transmission failed today. I was not able to get it out of the overnight parking spot in my apartment complex. I had it towed to a mechanic(a very reliable one), who after an extensive checkup, determined that the transmission had "broken down" and that it had to be replaced. He informed that a new transmission replacement inclusive of installation charges would cost about $2500 to $3000, which is extremely expensive for a full-time graduate student like me. I performed my research on the advice of the mechanic and came across a lot of people who have had problems with the automatic transmissions of mazda 626 manufactured between 93-97. This is frustrating because, ford (ford probe is the transmission used in the above said vehicles) and mazda are aware of this matter and have never found it so much as being responsible to make their customers aware of these problems. I want justice to be done and i would very much love ford and mazda for being so askance in this matter. I also want all the owners of the mazda vehicles involved in changing theor transmissions to be compensated adequately. But more than that, i want federal agencies to be aware of these evasive tactics of mazda and ford and punitive damages arising from federal case to be so inhibitive as to almost shut off their operations.

I bought a used 1996 mazda 626lx from rierson motors in clovis, new mexico and have had the car less than one month and the engine light stays on , it loses power on the interstate when i accelerate above 55 mph and lurches and goes in to next gear very hard. I think mazda should be held liable for these defects in this paticular model. I own a 1996 mazda 626 that i purchased from the original owner at 20k in 1999. My transmission finally just failed at 101k and i spent $2000 for a rebuilt trans. The od light has been coming on for over 12 months but would go off when car is restarted.I recently discovered the chronic transmission problems with the 626 and will get rid of it asap. Problems with the automatic transmission. Original transmission started to fail at 45,000. Finally was unable to drive the car at 84,000. Mazda dealer replaced transmission with rebuilt transmission which failed at 86,000 (only two months in service). Next transmission has 11,000 miles on it and it is beginning to fail. I will be bringing it back to mazda in june 2005 (still in warranty 12k/12 months).

My car has 79,170 miles on it. I borrowed money & worked 2 jobs to make the pymt. I was okay with that b/c i thought i purchased a dependable & reliable car. Two years ago w/o warning, while sitting at a stoplight, my car lunged forward. I called my dealership, & had the car serviced. It wasnt diagnosed that i had trans. Problems til i was traveling down a busy hwy. In early morning rush hour traffic, that my car lunged forward again & lost almost 50% of its power. In an instant my car went from traveling at 70+ miles per hour to 40 miles per hour. I lost my entire trans. At 57,000 miles. Mazda corp. Helped that time. I paid $700 for labor, mazda picked up the rest. Note  i had already paid @ $1300 in other repairs. Two years & 22,000 miles later i am facing the same problem again. I was traveling for the christmas holiday. About an hour into my trip, my overdrive light flashed off & my car downshifted by 20 miles. When i returned home, i took it to the dealership again. After the 2nd visit & my persistence to dig for the true problem, the news from mazda corp. Is trans. Failure & its my problem. As i listen to other non- mazda car owners, saying their cars have close to 200,000 miles on them with little or no problems, i am hurt, disappointed & frustrated to know my car will never make it. I am being forced to buy another vehicle that i had no plans to buy for a few more years. I am now going have to take a hard financial hit b/c mazda corp. Built a car with repeated trans. Failures, & they will not help their cust. When it fails more than one time. They should replace the trans. Free of charge; labor included, & tell the cust. The fix will not last. I trusted mazda corp. To build a reliable, dependable & safe vehicle. What i have is a car with trans. Failures that has nearly cost me my life, & is putting in me in debt. This was now the 4th transmission on a car with exactly 60,000 miles. Front pump failed on this transmission after only 6,000 miles in one year. *tt

I have a 96 626 that has 125,000 miles. I purchased my car in 98 with 60,000 miles. In may of 2000 i had to replace the oxygen sensor. I have also had to replace the left front axel and the right cv joint boot in feb. 2003. Now i have replace my entire transmission which is going to cost around 2300. I had no indications that i had transmission problems until it just quit. On my way to work my car just stopped moving on the interstate. When i pressed the accelerator it wouldn't pull. So i got off the road safely and attempted to see what the problem was. The car was not moving forward or backwards. I had to have it towed to the transmission shop to be told the wonderful news. I have been doing research and i'm finding this car has lots of problems. I am also having problems with oil leaking and occasionally the accelerator pedal appears to be hard to press as if it's stuck for a few minutes or it's real tight. I would not advise anyone to purchase a mazda. Don't even take it if it's free because it would be cheaper to purchase a car. I realize my car has 125,000 miles but i had a nissan that i drove 180,000 miles for before major problems occurred. I'm filing this complaint in hopes something can be done because this is a major problem. *jb

My 1996 mazda 626 transmission burned up approximately 100 miles into a road trip to houston. The transmission had been rebuilt in dec 2001 and only had 11,000 miles put on since the repair. I brought the car to a mechanic in houston who said the transmission would have to be replaced, at around $2200. I called my dealer in austin and was told to bring the car back to them and if the transmission was failing we would contact mazda and maybe they would work with me on the cost. I had the car towed back to austin and left it at the dealer. The next morning the service writer calls to tell me all my transmission needed was a "cooler" installed and i would be good to go. Although i felt this could not be anything but a band-aid, i paid for the repair and went on my way. I decided to do some research and found countless stories similar to mine on the internet. Mazda was aware of this transmission problem when the transmission was rebuilt and should have offered me the cooler then. I did complain to the general manager of the dealer and he reimbursed me for the cooler. My purpose in filing this complaint is just to get the word out there about these crummy transmissions. I used to believe mazdas were reliable, safe cars but my confidence has been shaken. I plan to sell the car and buy another kind of vehicle just for peace of mind.*jb

Mazda 1996 626 automatic transmission horror story here! Why is the nhtsa.Dot not forcing mazda to recall or pay damages to the hundreds and hundreds of folks like me who are out thousands for repeated transmission failures? Bought used car from transmission shop owner 2 years ago now. He warranted transmission (claimed "new") one year. This itself shows transmission was failed and replaced once already. Brought it in twice under warranty, told me "he didn't know what work was done because mechanic was not in that day". For all i know, he did nothing and waited until warranty lapsed on purpose. Now after warranty on transmission completely failed. Fluid was black sign of burning. Only 2nd year from purchase now, expensive price. Unmatching ford transmission has different liquid/pressure specs which do not match mazda engine specs. This is how mazda is selling it, the two parts don't work together. This is why even the "rebuilds" and "replacements" still fail 1-2 years.(ridiculous!!!!) the website www.Carreviews.Com contains hundreds of similar horror stories about this transmission on this model, all automatic. Exploding transmission fluid on my way home from repair/replace, failing at only 100 miles on brand new mazda for another new buyer!!!!, 3-4-5 replacements per consumer in 2-3 years is the most typical complaint!!! This is outrageous that you have done nothing to punish them< they know all about it!!!!! Why is there no investigation in your investigations page?

Transmission problems with 1996 mazda 626: mazda has a very high failure rate on the automatic transmissions in the mazda 626 vehicles. My car is on the second transmission and probably needs a third. I beleive that mazda should fix the problem without cost to the owner. Thanks for listening gary

I own a 1996 mazda 626 the manufacutre refused to admit that there is a defect in the design of the transmisson. It failed while driving the vehicle at the posted city speed limit. Could have caused aserious crash. *ak

'96 mazda 626 (bought new) . Transmission failed at 83,000+/_ mi. Initially took car to a dealer for oil leak (replaced oil pressure switch). They brought car to me, it started & died repeatedly. The speedometer needle jumped all around the dial and odometer would spin, adding mileage. Service writer said the service tech. Noticed the problem when working on it/they could check it out for additional $75 fee. I told her i hadn't had that problem before. She said they didn't repair anything in the area of transmission or speedometer that they might have damaged to cause this. I spoke to the tech. & he had no idea what the problem might be. He opened the hood and checked something as i talked to the service writer and started the car and it ran okay. While driving home, speedometer needle intermittently did the same thing, adding extra mileage, but drove ok. On another day, after driving approx. 15 - 25 mi. & return home, car won't run after stop and restart try. Turned the ignition/speedometer needle jumped all around the dial/the odometer spun/added mileage/car not moving. It starts and dies repeatedly. After sitting a few hours, it starts & drives ok. Drove to another dealer; they say problem won't manifest while they had it. Report: moisture in sensor contacts/dried them & car ok. Drove car home. The next time that i drove the car; same thing happened. Towed it back to the dealer. Their report report: transmission shot/torque converter falling apart & that caused all the problems. $2,900 for madza re-built trans. While researching this, i find that madza 626 (& other models) is notorious for transmission failures. I feel madza is aware of inferior and apparently defective transmissions in their cars. It seems that their replacement transmissions develop same or additional problems and have to be replaced repeatedly. Madza should recall and repair/replace them.

"o/d off" light began flashing, engine revved and would not shift from 1st gear. Diagnosis is that a new transmission is needed at the cost of $2300.00.

Problem with transmission when driven for more than 30 minutes. Most transmission shops want me to rebuild it for about $1600, same as wilkins mazda dealership. One transmission shop says it could be a computer problem. Either way mazda should pay to fix it. This has happened on almost all mazda 626 4cyl 2.0l transmissions from what i can see on the internet and from what i've heard from transmission shops. Currently i can't even drive my car at 45 mph for over 15-20 minutes without having to pull over for at least ten minutes on the highway. I also have to drive on streets without shoulders so i just pull over in the right lane during rush hour thanks to ford's sleek design. It's really a competition to toyota's lexus and honda's accord and nissan's infinity...Sike!!!*jb

While driving the car on the expressway or anywhere for that matter the car engine light comes on and the "over drive off" light begins to blink and my overdrive turn off. I usually have to pull over to the shoulder or at a red light and turn the car off and back on to fix it. This is very unsafe and annoying because it happens almost everyday. I have to do this during rush hour on i-294 in chicago. I am reluctant to take it to mazda repair because they charge $100 just to take the car in the shop and they try to find little ways to slap on a bigger bill. I had them change my transmission fluid and a week later it leaked and they told me there was a hole in the transmission. Apparently it was not there before the transmission fluid change and they did not notice it during. So i had them just refill it and i added sealant from auto zone. I checked my transmission fluid weekly and its just fine. Engine light comes and goes at will. There seems to be a problem with the computer chip or something which is mazda's fault and i should not have to pay to replace or fix. Everything on the car is stocked and i maintain the car better than mazda suggests. I check all fluids, oil change every 2000 miles, etc... I know that many people (thousands of them) that have the same problems with the engine lights and the "over drive off" light blinking. *jb

Transmission is slipping badly in lower gears. Shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd is very bad and often the rpms are approx. 5000 before the shift occurs. Transmission problem with 1996 mazda 626-i bought the car (a demonstrator) from allentown mazda in allentown pa. On may15, 1997 with 10,000 miles on it. I stopped at a light 2 miles before i was about to get onto onto the ne extension of the pa turnpike. As i pulled out, the car barely picked up enough speed to make the turn and i pulled to the side of the road. Although the engine revved, the car wouldn't move. Mazda knows they have a problem with their 626's from 1994-1999 and they refuse to fix the problem. Our od light started flashing and we had to pull over because the car was shifting very hard. I called mazda and they told me it was ok to drive the car. The next weekend i recieve a paper telling me to take the car and get a front coil spring gaurd to prevent rust from braking the spring. While at the dealer they said the od light was blinking because of a known mazda transmission flaw. I am now fighting to get a rebuilt transmission in my car with no help from mazda. These transmissions need to be recalled at mazda's expense. I am not the only person who has complained about this problem either. I am going to contact whoever i have to inorder to get these cars recalled. Am the owner of mazda 626, vin 1yvge22c3t5518155. I bought this vehicle new in august 1996 from the rosenthal nissan mazda dealership located in mclean, va. Since the purchase i have had 3 failures of the automatic transmission system. First failure occurred at ~38,000 miles. The second at ~49,000 miles and the third at ~86000 miles. First two transmissions were replaced by the dealership. Presently i am looking for mazda to replace the current transmission free of cost to me and provide me a 5 year warranty on the transmission system. So we bring it home and it wouldn't go into gear so we decide we have to rebuild the transmission. We get on the internet and search for any recalls on the tranny or the car and on some websites we found that the tranny is too small for that particular make of car and it tends to overheat and found a tsb that said the car needed a tranny cooling system b/c when it would overheat it would just crash, and we also saw that a lot of people were having this same problem and that they have had their tranny replaced 2 or 3 times b/c of the overheating, and i would love to know that mazda would stand by their product and help everyone out that is having this problem b/c we think this should have been done right the first time. *nm

I have a 96 mazda 626 and the car had 25,000 miles when it was purchased.I have had the transmission replaced 4 times totaling about 8,200 dollars. It is the notorious cd43 trans. The o/d light comes on then the transmission goes out. I always make sure that it has a trans. Services done around 22,000 miles but this doesn't seem to matter. I would like for the mazda/ford corp. To fix this problem and recall this transmission so i will not have to pay this ridiculous price again. I really love this car and nothing else has ever went wrong with this car.

Purchase auto used with less 48,255 miles on it on 5/1/98. On 5/22/98 the check engine light along with the srs light began burning intermittently. Part was ordered on 5/22/98 and replaced on 6/6/98. Problem still existed and was worked on again 6/10/98. Didn't repair problem and so it was again worked on 6/18/98. My transmission failed and was told by the dealer that it would cost $2,500 to fix the problems with the transmission. The diagnostic codes reported to me were p 1744 (tcc performance), P0741 (tcc stuck) and P0303 (#3 misfire). I am writing to report a problem i have had with our 1996 mazda 626. I had an incident where the driver's seat collaped while driving. The incident caused an accident, resulting in approximately $720 worth of damage. No one was injured in the accident as i was travelling very slowly. The problem happened a second time with no accident, but i am unwilling to let my wife drive the vehicle now due to safety concerns. I am convinced that it is a defect- a dangerous one. Last friday my transmission failed on my 1996 mazda 626 at 55mph on the taconic state parkway. While i was driving and pressingon the gas pedal, the engine did nothing but rev, the o/d light began flashing and i the car slowly came to a stop. I was able to pull over to the side of the road, and i tried putting the car in reverse, 1st and 2nd gear and still nothing, it was just like the car was in neutral. I called a tow truck and was towed to the nearest service station where i was informed that the transmission was "gone". The car has only 83,000 miles and has been serviced regularly at the mazda dealer, the car now needs a new transmission. I hope that this complaint adds to the ammunition of forcing mazda to realize that this tranmission should have been recalled a while back and that they should reimburse those who have been forced to hand over $2000 to fix something that should not fail on a car this young with less than 100,000 miles. Second transmission in under one year. Mazda will not admit to this being a problem that they are responsible for. Meaning, they will not admit that this tranny should have last more than 19,000 miles. Do not consider it anything but coincidence that it has happened twice in under a year. The first time i was covered under warranty. This time i am not, and was told i should feel lucky that they are willing to honor the parts, but i need to pay for labor $545.00 they say is a fair price. I disagree. I have done some research on this make and model and have noticed that there are several people out there that have had the same problems. It appears that this tranny should be recalled and mazda will not admit it. They are being very un-ethical in my opinion.

Transmission began whining and then failed at high speed going uphill. Unable to stay in flow of traffic. Very hazardous situation that nearly led to an accident due to sudden deceleration. Mazda is unwilling to assist in any way at this point to remedy the problem. According to other owners even replaced transmissions are known to fail again. I am hesitant to repair the car because i am concerned it will put me and my family in a similar unsafe situation again. I asked for a refund on the mass air flow sensor telling them that the o/d light had been coming on and i think that was the problem, but would not refund me for the cost. They then wanted 6000.00 for it all and i told them, i have replaced so many parts on this car and tried to get you to take it back and they refused. I also asked if they would give me a credit towards another vehicle, since i was sold a lemon. They refused. I had to turn the car back in to the loan company. I was on my way to work at 5:45 p.M. And as i was going over a set of railroad tracks at 15 miles per hour the driver's side and passenger side air bags deployed. I received an abrasion on my cornea in my left eye, a rash and scrapes on my left cheek, a scrape above my left eyelid, and some hearing loss in my left ear. I have been out of work for a week and a day so far. I have been seeing an eye doctor since the night of this incident and he has told me that he doesn't know when i'll be able to go back to work. Since my 1996 mazda 626 purchase i've had 3 transmissions. The 1st breakdown happened on route 70 a highly traveled roadway my wife 7 months pregnant. I was driving on i-10. I made a routine lane change. At that moment i lost complete control of my vehicle. My steering failed. I was rear-ended. I was shoved into another car on my driver side. I came to rest on a concrete barrier. The mechanic at the collision center said the rack and pinion fell apart. A private mechanic examined the mazda and also concluded that the shaft in the rack and pinion unit failed due to a defective part.

An independent mechanic inspected the car and stated:inspect car at body shop and found a broken shaft in the rack and pinion unit. The car has no direct impact to any components related to the steering failure. The shaft failed due to a defective part.The body shop employee stated: the rack and pinion fell apart causing the accident to occur.

1996 mazda 626 transmission problems i.E. Od light flashing when car is driven at speed of 65 mph. Car must be stopped, shut off, and restarted to correct the problem, otherwise once speed is decreased the car shifts erratically. In a two hour car trip, i may have to restart car 3 or 4 times or drive under 60 at all times. I've seen several complaints on the web regarding this problem and the major costs to repair, so i just don't drive my car any long distances and haven't for years! Don't understand why mazda isn't recalling if they know it's such a widespread problem. I worry that because i have to drive slow, i'll get rear-ended on the expressway by someone going the speed limit!! *jb

Transmission failed after owning the car for less than one month. It was covered under warranty, so the dealer replaced all parts and installed free of charge. They assured me at the dealer that this was a fluke, and that they had no knowledge of this being a problem in mazda 626, 1996 4-cylinder automatic transmission models. Little did i know that less than one year later, the transmission would go out again, this time after warranty, and would face mazda corp. Stating that there is no problem with there transmissions, and that technically they don't have to do anythign to help me, but they would do me a favor by replacing the parts, but i would be responsible for the labor $545.00. I'm not even sure if this is a fair price for labor on installing a transmission.

Brake failure- purchased used care 6/98, replaced brake pads 10/98, brakes failed 6/8/99 and had to replace brake pads and rotors (front) after accident. Transmission problems- the car began to jump while accelerating from 0-30mph, so i pulled over and parked (7/20/99) and when i put the car in drive it would not go. I had the car towed to a mechanic who told me that i was having transmission problems and advised me to drive the car w/the overdrive off and that is the only way the car moves in drive. I have been having problems with the hearing knocking noises when turning the steering wheel, and my mechanic told me that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Please advise me, because these are very expensive repairs for a car that does not even have 70k miles. Does the manafacturer have any responsibility, because it appears that there have been serveral simular complaints.

I had been having transmission problems with my 626 for several miles before my mileage rolled over to 50,000. I had taken the car to the dealership and reported problems with the dealer's reply being "we can't find anything wrong". Finally i took it back again at 56,000 miles. The dealership then told me i needed a new transmission! After reporting this problem under warranty, they are telling me after the warranty expired that i needed to pay for a new transmission. I fought this and ended up getting mazda to pay for $2000 of the rebuilt transmission. The company should have replace the whole thing for free seeing as how i had reported the problem plus the fact that my car had only 56,000 miles on it. What kind of transmission goes out at 56,000 miles? From what i hear now, mazda 626s are notorious for transmission problems. I wish the mazda company would take some credit for putting cheap parts in their cars that consumers pay hard-earned money for...I won't buy another mazda. *ak

It is currently at the dealer for a second transmission which failed on 12-29-99. This model year 626 have bad transmission i never seen so many trans. Being replace on one model car do we have to wait for people to die before something is done. None of the first three problems were causing any safety hazards. The transmission failure made the shifting very jerky and rpm to go high. I did not try to experiment on this on the highway. Driving a mazda is the worst experience of my life. Never buy/lease or rent a mazda again.

Consumer has replaced transmission 3 times, starting at 42,000 miles, and it was replaced under warranty. Reported to mazda that in two front-end collisions no airbags deployed. And they said "too bad." car was almost totalled in june 96 wreck, and we were both injured. The car was repaired, and in december 96, we hit two deers/an embankment and rolled 175 feet and the airbags still did not deploy, so what exactly does it take for them to go off. Needless to say, the car was demolished in the second accident and we no longer have it. *ak
