Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel leakage from the fuel tank investigation as of 20130315

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation on january 23, 2012 as pe12-001 based on 20 consumer reports in model year (my) 2003-2006 e55 amg vehicles.Based on new reports in other e-class vehicles, odi upgraded the investigation to engineering analysis (ea) 13-003 on march 15, 2013, and expanded the scope to all e-class vehicles through my 2008.The complainants alleged a strong odor of gasoline fuel both inside and outside of their vehicle, particularly after refilling the fuel tank. Many of the complainants noted that the odor subsided or went away after driving some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank.Other owners reported they would only fill the tank to about three quarters full to avoid the odor altogether. Some complainants alleged fuel leaked from the fuel filter/sender, located on the top of the fuel tank on the drivers side, and collected on top of the tank. There were also allegations that the fuel leaks were associated with an emissions recall campaign (no. 2008020001) conducted by mercedes-benz usa, llc (mercedes) in 2008 on my 2003-2006 e-class and cls-class amg models. The issue in the recall involved small cracks in the pressurized outlet fitting of the fuel filter/sender.Amg vehicles are high performance models that operate at higher fuel pressure and use a different fuel filter/sender and fuel pump than non-amg models.Information on recall no. 2008020001 is available from the u.S. Environmental protection agency (epa) website at www.Epa.Gov.Odis investigation found various leak sources that are unrelated to the outlet fitting cited in the epa recall campaign.Through interviews with complainants, field inspections of complaint vehicles, and the collection and laboratory analysis of failed parts, three identifiable leak sources were found. The component parts and areas of the leaks involve the on-board diagnostic fuel tank pressure sensor (located on top of the fuel filter/sender), the outlet of the centrally mounted fuel tank fuel filling limiter valve, and the top of the fuel pump. These areas of leakage are located at the top of the fuel tank in unpressurized parts of the fuel system. When the tank is full, fuel can slowly weep/seep from micro-cracks in these components and may collect in cavities on top of the filter/sender, pump, or tank.Contrary to complainants allegations that fuel entered the inside of their vehicle under the rear seat bench, neither odi nor mercedes found a plausible way for this to occur. The fuel tank is located outside of the passenger compartment, attached to the underside of the vehicle. The service access ports for the fuel filter/sender (drivers side) and fuel pump (passengers side) are located under the rear seat bench, covered by a steel plate, sealed and bolted to the vehicle floor. When technicians service the fuel filter/sender, which has a regularly scheduled 60,000 mile service interval, and/or the fuel pump, the work is performed from inside the vehicle by working through the access ports.By letter dated september 4, 2014, mercedes has notified the agency that it will extend the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on "covered fuel tank components" in e-class vehicles in my 2003-2009 and cls-class vehicles in my 2006-2011.The covered fuel tank components for the warranty extension include the fuel tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump, and all related gaskets/seals and retention rings.Odi is closing this investigation based on the manufacturers extend warranty of the affected fuel system components and in consideration that the nature of the leaks does not appear to present an un

The protective lacquer finish has failed causing wheel corrosion and rust from the inside out starting around the wheel hubs. This corrosion is like a metal cancer that is starting to deteriorate the properties of the metals and alloys. This is a high performance vehicle with high performance wheels. This mfg defect poses serious safety concerns and is a product liability that daimler north america corporation dba mercedes benz usa's has known about but yet has done nothing. This defect has affected several other mercedes benz vehicles of the amg performance line. Other models include slk 55 and slk 350 from 2000-2009. In addition to rust and corrosion forming from the inside out on some wheels, the bolts that hold the wheels to the hub assembly tend to rust as well furthering this safety issue. Note: vehicle is usually parked and covered in a climatically controlled garage which is not exposed to the usual elements of nature.

I just purchased the vehicle used from a dealership. I drove the vehicle 2000 miles home and i parked the car in my garage. I filled the gas tank prior to parking in my garage. The next morning i entered my garage and smelled a strong odor of gasoline. I could see gas underneath my car by the rear drivers side wheel and the odor of gasoline was so strong my eyes were watering and i couldn't breath well. I opened the garage door and moved the car outside(pushed it outside to avoid an explosion). The odor of gasoline is very strong by the driver's side rear compartment. I keep the fuel tank at half full or less to minimize the gasoline vaporous smell. I bought the car in chicago and drove it home to washington state. *tr

There is a strong smell of gasoline over 1/2 tank full, and frequent check engine lights on for an evap system leak. This is a known issue with these cars, and i am concerned to drive the vehicle with gasoline fumes coming inside the car and creating a fire hazard. Mercedes knows about this problem and needs to address it. *tr

Upon exiting the freeway and coming to a complete stop, vehicle was unable to accelerate as usual. Acceleration was very slow and without power. Upon looking at gauge cluster, the vehicle shifted itself into 5th gear it seems. Using the paddle shifter i then proceeded to downshift the transmission to 1st gear to pull away from stop. Car remained in automatic mode, but was not shifting out of gear. Cluster displays automatic comfort mode, but would not leave from what it seems 2nd gear. Stop engine and restart car, drive around and car will not shift out of gear. Upon searching the internet this is a very very common issue with all 7 speed automatic transmissions offered by mercedes benz. They have not assumed responsibility for a defect in part. Many have spent thousands of dollars diagnosing and repairing transmission related issues which revolve around this sub par transmission. If you search online for conductor plate, mercedes you will find countless people who have been dealing with transmission failure's due to this faulty part. This issue affects all mercedes 7 speed transmissions and as seen through online search is a world wide issue. I have read about this in the uk, australia, south america, as well as in the usa. *tr

Strong fuel smell after fill up for over a year. Was brought to mercedes with no fix. Recent inspection resulted in finding a puddle of fuel under the rear seat on the fuel sending unit. Further research shows this is a ongoing problem for other e-class and has been reported to nhtsa, and current fixes if any has been failing and even owners having to pay out of pocket for something mercedes should be fixing under warranty due to this serious potential safety and fire issue. I have two toddlers who sit in this car everyday. *tr

I reported to my independent mechanic a strong fuel smell when filling the vehicle full and parking it. Upon further investigation, my mechanic discovered a fuel leak from the drivers side of the tank onto the left exhaust which of course can create a fire hazard. I immediately contacted my local mb dealership and spent days trying to get in touch with the service manager. Finally after contacting the mb central region office, i left a vm and was contacted by the service manager i had been trying to get in touch with. As of today 4/8/13, i took the vehicle in for inspection. They told me that the drivers side fuel sending unit/pump is leaking and would need to be replaced. I asked if the car was safe to drive, they replied no, but happily sent me on my way anyhow. This problem lines up with every other complaint about the my03-09 w211's that exhibit this problem. I have not had the fuel leaking to the ground and pooling up, but the dealership has confirmed that the sending unit is indeed leaking and pooling up in the depression where the sending unit attaches to the tank, which is now leaking onto my drivers side exhaust, thus creating potential for a fire hazard. Nhtsa action number: ea13003. *tr

I purchased this car late july 2012 and when i went to pick it up i noticed a slight smell of gas from the left rear of car but, didn't think much of it as it was a new to me vehicle, just thought it was freshly filled up. The next time i filled up i noticed that the car smelled both inside the car and outside the car. As a new owner of a newer mb i joined mbworld form and searched this problem with e55 and e63 and found that it is a common problem for the w211 cars. Also, it seems the solution is not as obvious as one would think. On nov 14, 20012 i took it to cal star motors in glendale ca (a mercedes dealer) for repair, they told me that the cause of the problem is the seal between the sending unit and the gas tank. They replaced this part and i drove the car home as i needed to bring in car with half a tank for repair i did not notice any issue. Next time i filled up there was no smell from inside cabin and only slight smell outside. I now have filled up several times and the problem has returned. I should say that after fill up there has never been any leaked gas present when parked as i check drive daily for any evidence of leaks in any fluid. I feel that if there is a gas leak issue with this/these cars which it appears there is based on so many issues reported that mercedes has a responsibility to solve the problem as it is a very dangerous situation to leave unresolved. *tr

Similar to the complaints filed by mercedes benz w211 members owning 2003 - 2006 e55 amg's, my 2007 w211 e63 amg is experiencing fuel leaking from the fuel sender/pump assembly unit. I noticed a distinct gas odor in my garage the morning after i filled up with gas. I checked the fuel sender/pump assembly area as is stated in many forums where owners are complaining about this commonly occurring issue. There was fuel puddled in the cup of the assembly. I replaced the seal hoping that it would correct the issue but it did not. I filled up again with fuel on tuesday, august 14 and within minutes there was fuel puddled again in the assembly area and a distinct fuel smell on the outside of the vehicle. *tr

I had just purchased the car the day before (april 28, 2012). When i filled the fuel tank, i notice a strong smell of gasoline. This has occurred every time i fill the car with fuel. At first i thought it was a fuel injector leaking down and something i would have to address in the near future. However, last week i went to drive the car after i had just filled the tank with fuel. The car was in my garage and the smell of gasoline was very strong. I noticed a puddle of fluid in front of the left rear tire. My first reaction was it was condensation from the air conditioning system. I bent down to look at it and then i notice a separate condensation tail coming from the middle of the car. I sampled the fluid stream from the middle of the car and indeed it was water. However when i looked at the other puddle, i notice a constant and rapid drip coming from the shield under the gas tank. When i sampled the puddle it was pure gasoline. This was most disconcerting as this fuel leak is very close to the exhaust and the brakes. Either one of which could ignite the fuel. I am a mechanical engineer with considerable auto racing experience, so i know how dangerous this can be. I called mercedes benz of sugar land on monday (11/12/12) and talked to a service representative. I told him of the fuel leak and he told me there was no reported issues and no service bulletins for such a problem. I was also told to bring the car in and they would repair it at my expense. Having paid my way through my first degree as a mechanic as well as designing racing equipment for ford motor company, i believe this should be covered under warranty as part of the emission system. This is of course secondary and in addition to the obvious safety hazard this condition presents. *tr

Several tail lamps quit working. I had a warning on the car display listing numerous lights on the trunk inoperative. The license plate lamp, 3rd brake light, and the auto open and close of the trunk were inoperative. Also, the emergency trunk release function inside the trunk would not light up and would not open the trunk. I searched a mb web forum to see if anyone else had the same problem. There are numerous cars from several year groups that are having the same problem. I traced the problem to 1 broken wire in a wiring bundle attached to the left hinge of the trunk. It appears that the design and placement of this wiring bundle is causing the wiring bundle to flex and over time, with the opening and closing of the trunk, the wires are breaking. Since i had reduced capability in brake lights, i accomplished the fix myself to repair the broken wire. This fix only lasted several months before the same thing happened again. I have now "fixed" it myself 3 times. I have my car at the mercedes benz dealer currently and mentioned the problem to them. They are aware of it and want to charge me to fix it. I feel this should be a covered service bulletin since it is happening to numerous cars now. This is a design flaw in the location and placement of this wiring bundle and could lead unexpectedly losing some, if not all, brake lights. Also, if someone gets locked in the trunk and the wire is broken, they have no way of opening the trunk. *tr

Car began smelling of raw fuel after being filled up. Found that the fuel level sending unit was leaking fuel out of the top of the fuel tank. A puddle of fuel was visible on top of the sending unit and was leaking onto the ground. This posed a significant fire risk and the car was moved outside. I have contacted mbusa and they have offered no help, saying this isn't a known issue. After researching the issue i have found it is widespread and affects multiple models. We can no longer fill the fuel tank without having a puddle of fuel left under the car. *tr

Fuel leak in the sending units, pumps and gas tank. Inside of car smells like raw fuel. *tr

NoNoN NoneNone20111027

Normal fill up of gas tank causes fuel to leak out of top of sending unit. The seam just below the electrical connection powering the units motor seems to be weakly and/or improperly joined, allowing raw gas to leak out and pool into a small compartment under the drivers side rear seat. When i purchased car used 14 months ago, i noticed extreme gas smell after 1st night in the garage. I immediatly took vehicle back to dealer where they replaced sending unit under 30 day warrenty. Now only 14months later after a normal fill up at a gas station and then driving home, i noticed a very strong gas smell as i entered the garage the next morning. I have found that i am not the only one with this issue. Online research lead me to information that gave me the details neccesary to locate and remove the access panel under the drivers side rear seat. After removing the top access panel under the seat i found (rough estimate) a measuring cup of gasoline that was pooled around the base of the sending unit. So much fuel had leaked that it had overflowed the pumps recess and had pooled into the surrounding (rubber/plastic) recess that seals the top of the sending unit from the outside. *tr

Gas smell in the my garage and strong inside cabin after filling the car up. Checked under seat and puddle on top of fuel pump area. Cleaned up fuel and consulted internet for diagnose of issue. Found this was a common problem and found some to get fixed with pump replacement or whole tank replacement. Took in to dealer and they said it was the pump and wanted $800 to fix. Per internet opted not to pay for replacement and have left as is just not filling car up with fuel. Only fill to 3/4 tank and no smell since. *tr

Notice a gas smell after filling up the tank. Did not really took it for anything but on the second fill smell again inside the car. Being summer i drive windows down and smell was not bad until i had the ac on. Online research prove it to be the tank. And its a known defect but mb will not fix it. More i check into the problem its an on going issue with these cars. 100k and no one will listen to your issues. I now fill 3/4 as the fix and no issues and can not sell it to someone else knowing this is a problem. *tr
