Tl* the contact owns a 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt. Upon opening the hood of the vehicle, the contact noticed fluid leaking from the transfer case. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 93v033000 (power train), but it failed to remedy the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transfer case bearing was faulty. The dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.

Transfer case failed, dealer oked replacement under recall, a week later they said the part they got wasn't right and the transmission output shaft is damaged and they can't repair. Contacted mitsubishi 4/6, back & forth via phone, on 4/20 was told "waiting for a reply from legal", will get back to me in couple days, nothing since then. The tc is a recall and the tc failure commonly causes output shaft damage. They oked the recall, have had the car weeks, and done nothing.

I have previously entered a complaint concerning this, but no evidence has been seen proving effort being made toward this issue. Seat belts will not properly retract! Many 3000gt and stealth owners have this problem. This must be addressed immediately! When the belt is buckled usually only the lower half is tight enough to restrain passenger and driver. For the average height driver this means a sudden stop (or crash of course) will result in his or her head slamming into the top of the steering wheel or dashboard for passenger (yum, brains all over my car, cant wait). Many 3000gt and stealth owners have filed this complaint nationwide and we will be heard! This is not of course a threat, but an affirmation that we will be staying on top of this until it is properly handled. Most of our belts or not worn, and lots of us have found (those who have checked) that our belt spools are in fact properly lubricated but yet, still we would be better of using twine to tie ourselves to the seats. Please, please, please take this into consideration because if our belts don't work, there really isn't any reason for us to even have them. Cant say for sure how many failures, just think this...Every time. Thank you *jb

Seat belts in 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 do not retract!!! Widespread issue among 3000gt and gto owners! Please open investigation as this is highly dangerous since seat belts do nothing if they fail to cinch-up as designed. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 1991 mitsubishi 3000 gt. While making a right turn at 25 mph, the powertrain locked up and disabled the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that it was previously repaired in 2005 according to nhtsa campaign id number 02v143001 (powertrain:transfer case (4-wheel drive)) and would not assume liability. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact filed a formal complaint with the manufacturer. The current and failure mileages were 140,000.

While nothing serious has come of my issue yet, the potential is there. My 91 mitsubishi 3000gt (with 72,000 miles) is having problems retracting it's seat belt. I noticed it was a safety issue when i was forced to suddenly stop (due to a cat crossing the road) and the seat belt did not want to lock and retract in satisfactory time. There was a significant amount of slack left in the seat belt that could potentially cause injury in the event of an accident. When i talked with my local mitsubishi dealership about it they told me they would have to change out the mechanism that retracts the belt, but that it was not covered under warranty. As a safety issue i believe it should be a a recall as i have talked with many other 3000gt owners who have the same problem. *jb

Tl* - the contact purchased a 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 december 9, 2006. The contact stated that while driving at 75 mph under dry road conditions and light traffic, the vehicle shook and vibrated a few times. The contact slowed down to stop the vehicle, while reducing speed to 10 mph the vehicle rear wheels locked causing the vehicle to skid about 20 feet. No one was struck or injured during this incident. The vehicle was taken by flat bed truck to a local shop where the drive shaft was removed allowing the wheels to move. There was a trace of liquid on the transfer case that had a burnt smell. The contact found out about the recall while researching www.3si.Org. There is a recall on the transfer case and relates to oil leaking out that may cause the rear wheels to lock. The contact called mitsubishi in regards to the recall. Mitsubishi informed the contact of a recall issued in jan 2003. The repairs for his car were made july 8th 2003. Mitsubishi explained that they could not pay for these repairs since the vehicle was already seen for the recall. The consumer stated paid over $2,000 for repairs. Updated 08/13/07 *tr

NoNoN NoneNone20061014

I am one of the members of 3si.Org which is a website covering the 3000gt/stealth models from 1991-1999. I have noticed that a largely shared majority of us have the same problem. The problem is that the seat belt does not retract into place when pulled out. The seat belt is therfore either loose on the driver and passanger which can lead to death/injury or when the person is exiting the car the person has to wind the belt back into the position so it doesnt fall out of the door. This is a serious safety issue and i think a must for recall. I was in a accident recently and the seat belt did not engage in time and i hit my head on the steering wheel and had to go to the er even though it was a slight fender bender. Please issue an investigation on this belt. Btw my car has only 65,000 miles and the seat belt wore out at 22,000 miles.

NoNoN NoneNone20060827

On my 1991 dodge stealth r/t tt i have had numerous occasions of a slack in both of my seat belts. The seat belts do not retract properly at all. Most of the time the seat belts just hang loose and you have manually try and retract them (not easy). This is a huge problem with safety. If i was to get in a crash the seat belt would not be able to function properly. This is scary for my passengers and myself. It could cause death and needs attention. This is an on going problem. My seat belts and other owners seat belts of the dodge stealth and mitsubishi 3000gt's are having the same seat belt problem. This issue should be fixed under a recall. *nm

NoNoN NoneNone20060504

I have a 91 mitsubishi 3000gt sl. The seat belts in it have a problem locking up and not releasing. The seat belts in my car do not function properly sometimes. When the seat belt is pulled on it does not retract, leaving enough slack in the belt that if an accident were to occur, it would not serve its purpose as a safety restraint. In my opinion this should be included in a lifetime warranty. Safety was an issue when building cars of these types so they should always be as safe as possible. I have heard many people say put armor all on the belts and they will work just fine, but like many other 3000gt owners i have tried this and it doesn't work. I haven't owned my car long but this was one of the first things i noticed about my car. It wouldn't bother me that much if i didn't wear my seat belt that often but i never go somewhere without my seat belt on. I also haven't really drove anybody around in my car so im not real sure on how the passenger side or back seat belts work. Right now im just having problems with the driver side seat belt. *jb

NoNoN NoneNone20060410

When i purchased my 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt vr-4 in june of 2004. The seat belts would not retract on their own and would have to be fed back into the reel by hand. Both the drivers side and the passenger side do no retract. I have disassembled the entire unit and attempted to free up and lubricate it, but the mechanism was not repaired. It seems that it is a failure in the design of the seatbelt and a stronger spring is needed. The seat belt not retracting poses a serious safety risk as in the event of an accident there would be no shoulder restraint. This is a very common problem amount 3000gt's and dodge stealths. Almost all cars are affected. I believe that a dealer recall should be installed. *jb

My mother owns a 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4, since she isn't competent in using the computer i am sending this in for her. This model car has a common problem in the transaxle with the 18-spline shaft. This part of the car is considered the weak link. The shaft snapped while driving the car and almost caused an accident since it was on a highway with no shoulders to pull over on. Luckily there was not a lot of traffic and the car was able to change lanes and put the hazard lights on without incident. I am hoping that nhtsa can assist owners of this car in getting a recall for these 18-spline transmissions. Thanks. *ak

I have a 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 twin turbo. I had to replace the 18 spline output shaft in the transmission. In 1993 (2 years after production), mitsubishi realized that they made a flaw in the output shafts and went ot the 24 spline. I know of very many people that have had to pay "out of pocket" for this design flaw. Many have to replace it with another 18 spline due to the fact that the 24 spline conversion requires a whole new transmission casing ($$). Description of problem - getrag awd transfer case: the subject transfer case on my 1991 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 is leaking. According to certified auto repair facilities, this leakage will eventually cause the unit to fail. If the vehicle is in motion at the time of failure, injury or death may occur as failure of the transfer case while the vehicle is moving will cause the wheels to lock up suddenly. As aresult, the driver may lose control of the vehicle. I contacted mitsubishi customer service regarding this problem on july 7, 2000 and described the problem. I asked the representative if the problem could be addressed under mitsubishi's technical service bulletin (tsb)# sr93003r; however, the respresentative refused to authorize the repair of my vehicle in conjunction with the tsb, in spite of my reminding him of the risk to myself and any passengers riding in my car at the time of failure. Consequently, i wrote mitsubishi customer relations support in cypress, ca. To express my concerns. Misubishi has never responded to my letter and has simply chosen to ignore my concerns.

The transmission is made by a german company called "getrag". They only will sell a complete new unit and will not sell replacement parts. The parts are weak from the start with many known failures of these transmissions, and also their weak output shafts. The syncronizers are the most common thing to go with my 2nd and 3rd gear being replaced with used ones twice with no success. These transmissions are garbage and without individual replacement parts being available buying a whole new unit for $5,000 is not a very good solution. I am representing the stealth / 3000gt community. Our cars have major safety concerns with the transmissions. I would send the entire letter we as a community have composed, but i am only limited to 2000 characters. To be brief, our cars transmission systems are sub-standard quality. They have broken while people are driving the cars, and the break again. We cannot get replacement parts for our transmissions either, due to mitsubishi not providing them. Please email me at [email protected] or [email protected] so i can send in the full detailed letter. I have a spreadsheet that i compiled over the week of almost 50 names/information of people who have re-occuring transmission problems. And i got those names in only 5 days time. We have been dealing with our cars constantly breaking down and being worried about them breaking down while driving. Some people have had gears and other parts break right through the transmission casing walls while the car is moving. Luckily, nothing serious in terms of an accident has happened. I will send the entire letter to you [nhtsa] if you email me back. I will also attach the spreadsheet of names and info i have received of supporters that have transmission problems as well. As i said before, please email me at [email protected] and/or [email protected] so i can send you the letter. Thanks, stealth/3000gt community.

Now vehicle has no braking ability/leaks, at dealership to be corrected. 96v143002. *ak consumer states there were no problems with braking system until she took it into dealership for recall, they left air in the brakes and the brake hose was not fastened on tightly, which resulted in no brakes.*jb
