While leaving a parking lot. Lost steering capability. During troubleshooting found the drivers side outer tie rod had separated from the adjust tube. Both lock nuts were tight and in the original positions and the adjust tube and inner tie rod were tight. Threads of the tie rod did not appear to be stripped but the adjust tube would not tighten to the outer tie rod lock nut. This is the first and only instance of this failure on this car. Dealer is replacing both drivers and passenger side inner tie rod, outer tie rod and adjust tube at my cost. My concern is the severity of the failure. If this would have happened while on the highway it would have been a major accident with deaths or major injury occurring. Auto is 10 years old with approx 120000 miles. Manufacturer and dealer both indicated that this is a wear item but is not part of an inspection. *tr

The 2000 montero sport had the same problem as the 1995-1999 model. The crankshaft has come off the vehicle on four different occasions. Had to pay thousands of dollars ,including $1400.00 on the last visit to mitsubishi dealership. Now it happened again and the dealer tells me the crankshaft itself has to be replace and while they are doing that , they might as well replaced the piston to,which will cause thousands more dollars in repairs. Mitisi needs to own up to there responsibilities, and honor these repairs. Why will a dealership service department tell a customer they can not fix the problem. *ak

Mitsubishi montero sport, year 2000 - automatic transmission temperature light came on after driving ~ 200 miles at 70 mph. Stopped after driving 20 more miles. Smoke was coming from engine compartment near transmission. Appears transmission fluid was venting and hitting hot engine. Allowed car to cool down, as recommended in owners manual. Then proceeded to auto mechanic who confirmed vehicle was shifting hard between 2 & 3rd gear and was not locking in the torque converter after going into overdrive. Vehicle has ~ 118,000 miles at the time. Same thing occurred back when vehicle only had ~ 30,000 miles and dealer did something at that time. I notice there are a number of complaints about this on nhtsa website. Suggest mitsubishi should be required to rectify the problem at their expense. *jb

My son fell asleep while driving. He veered into the median and flipped 5 to 6 times. On first impact his seat belt released, therefore he was thrown up and down each time he flipped. On inspection of the seat belt, it was found that the red release button was ripped out of the receiver part of the seat belt. My son missed five days of work because of the accident. If his seat belt would have held up he might have missed only one day of work. The only lingering injury that he sustained was an injured tail bone that still bothers him. I contacted mitsubishi the day after the wreck and explained to them what happened. The wreck happened on april 25, and it took mitsubishi until september 13th to render a decision. They decided that external forces were applied by some undetermined object in the vehicle to the red release button at the top of the buckle. There was no way anything hit the red release button, because on initial impact my son was thrown to the top of the car. I do still have the vehicle, and it is tarped so nothing could happen to it. I would like to know if i need to keep it or sell it for parts. *nm

The wheel screws are also all rusted and the lug nuts have a tendency to get bent when trying to remove them. The last time i had to pay for the screw replacement. July, 2005 a/transmission shifting erratic, slipping, creating hazardous driving conditions due to loss of control. Mitsubishi dealership performed a/t flush and erratic behavior was cleared. On first road trip after this repair, the neutral shift indicator, "n", began to flash after vehicle was traveling on highway for 45 minutes. According to the owners manual, this indicates the a/t is overheating and vehicle should be brought to a stop to avoid damage and/or injury. I have taken the vehicle back several times without any resolution as the dealership claims they were not able to duplicate my complaint. On my last visit of 12/19/06, the dealership recommends i upgrade the a/t oil pan to a larger one per tsb 00-23-008 at my cost. This potential fire hazard is not due to a damage or a part that has worn out. This is an obvious design defect that the manufacturer should correct at no cost to the consumer. Initially there was a rattling sound when the gear selector was pushed a certain way. The mitsubishi tech's would not even look at the problem till i figured out how to reproduce the noise for them. Then on long trips the a/t lamp would come on. I would pull over and let the engine cool the proceed until the next a/t incident. Some of the problem was caused by the transmission having bolt heads rattling around inside the trans housing. Other problems were caused by porosity of the trans bell housing leaking trans fluid. Mitsubishi 'fixed' the leaks and bolts rattling around inside the trans, but now on trips of 100 miles or so when you accelerate from a stop during the rev up to shifting around the 2nd to 3rd gear shift the tach will indicate a high rev then fall back when the shift is accomplished by the trans. The vehicle will 'buck' in response to this shifting anomaly. This effect will not happen unless the engine has been running for an hour or so. I now no long take this vehicle on long trips unless compelled to do so. *jb

Mistubishi montero sport 2000- automatic transmission temperature light comes on when there are more than 2 persons in the vehicle, or when there is cargo in the back of the vehicle when driving distances over 1 hour in length. Pulling over and stopping would let light go off after a/t temp cooled down. Also, would leak a/t fluid when light comes on. Took vehicle to dealer, they told me it is a common problem with this make/model and that in order to prevent a/t damage, i had to have a larger a/t fluid pan installed to allow for the "overheating of the fliud", or else i was not to travel with more than one other person or cargo in my vehicle or it would damange the transmission. My complaint concerns a technical service bulletin #tsb-00-23-008, issued november 2000. In the bulletin, mitsubishi motors addresses the need to replace the a/t oil pan due to overheating that is caused by the shallowness of the pan. Just prior to this bulletin, in october 2000, production vehicles were equipped with a larger oil drainage pan to eliminate overheating cause by the prior pan. After having my 2000 mitsubishi montero sport given the 60,000 mile servicing in june 2004, i was driving out of town and noticed (for the first time ever) that the a/t temperature light was on, signaling that the automatic transmission was overheating. I pulled over to the side of the road (95 south - 38 miles from richmond, va) and immediately contacted darcars mitsubishi in silver spring, maryland, the dealership that had just serviced my vehicle. My service advisor, becky subsequently informed me of the service bulletin that had been issued regarding this overheat problem. Since i was out of the area, i also contacted mitsubishi dealers in both richmond and fredericksburg, va. Both service department personnel wanted me to bring in the vehicle due to the service bulletin addressing the issue of overheating due to the shallow transmission pan. None, not even the dealership that serviced my car, however, were willing to perform the service free of charge since this is obviously a manufacturers defect. The fredericksburg dealership even wanted me to bring the vehicle in to be serviced again should transmission fluid need to be changed. The fact that all of the dealerships are aware of this manufacturers defect and obviously perform the repair with some degree of consistency, screams the need for this matter to be covered as a recall. The consumer should not be required to pay for something that mitsubishi acknowledges causes potential damage to the powertrain; this is apparently a manufacturers defect and should be covered as such.*ak

I am very disappointed in my 2000 montero sport and the lack of answers that i have received in the past. In addition my check engine light came on for the first time, when i took the car in i was told the problem had been fixed. Later the same day it came back on, i returned the following day, and was told to find out what was wrong i would have to leave the car one complete day to determine what the problem was since nothing appeared to be wrong. I left it and when i picked it up i was told that the cars computer was trying to place the car in 2 different gears at the same time and the problem was resolved. A few days later while driving on the highway on my way to work the car shuddered and shifted into neutral on its own and refused to move, subsequently the air-condition started blowing hot air. When i was finally able to get the car to drive it remained in 1st gear and would not shift to second. At that point i took the car to the dealership to find out what was going on, i was told that something was wrong with the transmission but they couldnt diagnose what exactly was wrong and the car was returned to me. The car was then taken to aamco transmission to find the problem since the cause could not be found at the dealership. I was told the following occurred over time and in this order: torque converter failed (causing the shuddering and jerking when gears were changed), pump failed due to converter problem, transmission failed due to pump failure, bushings and plastic parts were warped due to high temperature caused by pump failure. Currently they are unable to locate replacement parts that will fit my car which is extremely frustrating. The reason i am writing this letter is because i have spent over $3000 this year on my car and now i have to purchase a transmission, torque converter, transmission pump, and air-condition unit. I am a student, i am not rich or well off. *ak

My montero has had significant problems from day one with repeated/numerous visits to several mitsubishi dealerships in my area. I have had all of the same complaints i have read from other owners and am very disappointed that i bought this sport utility and have spent thousands of dollars to repair. The montero has had pull to the right as described, a vibration when driving at any speeds, and a horrible performance of braking that has almost caused several accidents that could have resulted in my life and my daughters and countless other families. I have a lifetime purchase plan for alignments which are performed on a bi-weekly basis and i have also gone through 4 sets of brakes. I have also experienced my montero to just die, completely shut off in the middle of traffic- dangerous!! Then after about 10 minutes and everyone honking and cursing me out it starts after i restart it. Also, with this comes a fire burning smell that i have been told by various mechanics that i have an oil leak in my engine. I have since taken the montero back and the dealership has repaired a melted gasket in the engine. I have also replaced all my belts and sparkplugs. The sunroof has had it's share of problems of leaking uncontrolallably when it rains and here in florida it has been better to stand in the rain than in my suv. Now my front reading lights under my rear mirror is leaking buckets of water and the dealership wants to charge me over $500.00 for a new sunroof after i paid over invoice for this luxury! All of my brake lights in the rear have blown out numerous times to have to replace. This suv ia the million dollar money pit mistake and do not reccommend anyone to buy! With less than 40k miles on my 2000 mitsubishi montero sport, the brake pads have been replaced three times, the rotors replaced once. Now two local mechanics tell me that my vehicle's brake pads cover less than 50% of the rotor, causing significantly reduced braking capability. The root cause appears to be that the vehicle has 14" rotors on trucks designed for 15" rotors (and 15" wheels). So now i am driving a possible damaged transmission and who knows what else will happen. I would like to request and investigation into this, the mechanic at the dealership told me other vehicles(montero's) have been doing the same thing as well not just mine. I believe this is mitsubishi's responsiblity to fix this even if it means a new transmission!! If you would like to talk further on this problem please feel free to contact me at the given numbers. Thanks and have a great day. --- concerned consumer

The front wheel bearings have been adjusted twice by mitsubishi dealership mechanics. First time by "courtesy mitsubishi" on stevens creek blvd., san jose ca. The second attempt to have this repaired was again at courtesy mitsu with no cooperation from the service dept. They claimed that the eratic steering and the low grumbling sound was eminating from the front tires. And they further claimed that they could not diagnose the problem due to "tread separation" on the front tires. This was confirmed at a later date to be false as i took the vehicle to a yokohama dealership and had the owner inspect the tires. He found no defects. I had the tires rotated and balanced to eliminate any doubt as to the tires condition. The vehicle continued to progressively get worse. Loud clunking noises, wheel bearing growl, and extremely erratic steering behavior at all speeds. I am not able to take my family out on the freeway in this vehicle as i am afraid for their safety. I took the truck to another, larger dealer, "capitol mitsubishi". They kept the vehicle for 48 hrs and concluded that the front wheel bearings were indeed loose again. However they refused to admit that there was any other problem and only retightened the bearings on the right side. The manager went for a test drive with me and i told him that the problem was not solved. He refused to do the work under warrantee and billed me $90.00 labor for retightening the bearings. This vehicle is dangerous to drive and the front suspension components are rapidly deteriorating. Ball joints, control arm bushings, wheel bearings... Mitsubishi is violating the warrantee by avoiding and delaying a full and complete repair of these problems!*ak

I just bought my montero sport 3 months ago. When testing driving the vehicle i felt pulling to the right and shaking at higher speeds. The dealer said it was just the tires and they would do an aligment. I purchased the vehicle and bought new tires. My warranty was out by the time i figured out it was not the tires. This vehicle always shakes and feels like a fish out of water, after serveral aligments it still pulls very hard to the right when u let go of the steering wheel. I wish the company would look into what the problem is and fix it. *ak

In february, 2000, i had pulled up underneath my home. The car was in park when the motor excelled. I thought something must be wrong with the timing. I turned off the car. I didn't think any more about it until 9-20-2000 when the engine did it again. I was picking my child up from football practice i pulled into a parking place. The spaces are close together and you go into the parking area with your foot on the brake. I had pulled straight up in the space and was getting ready to put it in park when the motor excelled again. I braked as hard as i could but the car would not stop. I did not have my foot on the gas as mitsubishi has suggested i might have done. I ran over a metal fence. I was headed toward a bleacher when i did a 90 degree turn and headed down a path. The only thing that was working was the steering. I heard a click and the motor died down and i was able to stop the car. I have a number of witnesses who saw me pull in. I have a very good driving record and i am 49 years old. By the police suggestions i had the vechilde towed to a towing place until i could contact my insurance company. I contacted liberty mutual. I asked them to have the car inspected before they towed it to mitsubishi dealership in charleston. They were on an off about this for several days then they said it had to go to the dealership, that they did not have a place that could check it out. It was towed to the dealership and they went over it. I was told by the manager it could be many things but when they checked it out, everything was okay. The manger said it could be air flow from the computer that is shot into diffferent sysytems, but there was no evidence. Liberty mutual then sent someone out. Why they didn't do this before, i don't know. Their engineer looked over everything with mitsubishi and guess what nothing is wrong with it. Wrong! 7 months between the incidences. When will be the next time??? Mitsubishi says i have to take a leased car bac

On 7/13/00, while travelling on city street @ 25-30 mph & maintaining adequate distance ( at least 2 car lengths )from vehicle in front, driver of said vehicle stopped in lane ( at a green light )to avoid hitting cars in front of him that had stopped, i pressed down on my brakes & it failed to stop my vehicle. I pressed the pedal all the way to the floor (while bruising 3 toes on my right foot);was unable to stop, vehicle continued to roll into the back of the other vehilce. Brakes definitely failed. Was recorded by police officer in his report and i was cited for the accident. I have reported the details of the accident to the dealer and to the national 800 # customer service re: failing brakes & possible concealed defect by mitsubishi caused my accident. According to various articles in print and on tv, mitsubishi has concealed defects for the past 20 years & its own government (japan) is investigating. When i discussed the defect articles & recall #'s to the mitsu rep. She claimed that those figures were incorrect & did not apply to vehicles exported to the us, even though the ap wire reports stated that more than 45,000 defected vehicles were sold in the us?!?!?! I have been driving for 36 years, accident-free, never even coming close to an accident, and then my brand-new mitsu has brake failure under emergency conditions & i have this accident that was not my fault. I do not drive recklessly, nor too close, always defensively & apparently trusting too much in the quality & integrity of my vehicle and the safety features that i paid for & presumed would be effective in times of crisis. Not the case! If the executives/management of mitsubishi have concealed defects in their vehicles for the past 20 years, what's to say that the 2000 montero sports aren't hiding something! I need some answers! I am contesting the citation with a hearing before the traffic court next month for it was not my fault! Please contact me confirming your receipt & resolution. Thank you!!!

Approaching highway speeds, a vibration occurs at the front end of the vehicle, most noticeable in the steering wheel. Moreover, a looseness is noticeable in the steering column exhibiting "play" in the steering. Vehicles tends to shimmy on downsloping roads.( dot number: tire size: 255/70sr16 )

The vehicle was sold with inadequate rear coil suspension resulting in the vehicle "bottoming out" with rear passengers. The vehicle was represented to be able to tow 5000#. But due to the improper suspension, towing anything is dangerous as a result of the inability of the suspension to accommodate minimal tongue weight. Supposed repair did not fix the problem. A cushion was installed rather than increasing the coil strength or otherwise "repairing" the problem. The cushion merely attempts to "mask" the inadequate suspension and does not resolve anything.

The consumer feels that the clearance from the ground to the bottom of the vehicle is too high, the consumer does not feel secure in the vehicle when encountering sharp curves and unexpectedly needs to swerve while driving 10-15 mph clearance from the ground to the bottom of the vehicle is too high. The consumer stated that when he encounter sharp curves and unexpectedly needs to swerve at speeds over 10-15 mph, especially when the roads are wet, the consumer also wants to downsize the 16 inch tires to 15 inch tires hoping this will lower the vehicle giving the consumer a safer feel and more control (255/70r16 bridgestone/firestone). The entire vehicle vibrates around 60mph. The wheels have been balanced twice now, and an alignment perormed. I am working with the dealer to determine the problem. I visit a montero sport owner's bulletin board often (www.Montero-sport.Com), and many others on the board complain of the same problem. These other people have montero sports that range in year from 1997 to 2000. Mitsubishi is aware of the problem, but the dealer repair techs don't know what to do to fix the problem. Most others with the problem have had the same work performed that i have, with no improvement. One person just completed a buy back with mitsubishi. A lawyer that visits the board gathered a list of names and sent an official complaint letter to mmca (mitsubishi). I'm complaining to the nhsta in the hope that a governmental entity can get something done. This vibration problem could potentially cause someone to lose control of their vehicle.

The vehicle started creaking after the second month , we were originally told that it was new and that it was the interior plastic that was adjusting do to temp. Changes. This continued and than the second issue the abs brakes almost caused 2 accidents when going less than 5 mph and the vehicle slid. The brake pedal shook excessively and the noise and shaking from underneath made it seem like it was going to fall apart. By the sixth month their was other noises coming from the suspension in the front and rear . The creaking /clicking noise was apparant in both the front and rear. August marks having this vehicle for 1 1/2 years and both my wife and i can not take its issues anymore. This was a major purchase for us and we feel the events justify it as a "lemon".*ak
