  • Recall 15964 [USA]: Consequence of non-compliance: the driver of the vehicle would not be able to see the actual position of the transaxle gear selector resulting in a driver either inadvertently leaving a parked or idling vehicle in drive, reverse, or neutral rather than park, or selecting an incorrect transaxle shift position while driving the vehicle.
The instrument panel cluster trim plate/bezel can sag and cover the light emitting diode portion (lighted pointed above panel) of the transaxle shift indicator display. This does not comply with fmvss no. 101, "control location, identification, and illumination."
dealers are to install a new instrument panel cluster trim plate/bezel assembly which is not subject to this condition.
system: powertrain; transmission; automatic; indicator; fmvss no. 101.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmission.Note: owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time, should contact pontiac at 1-800-762-2737. Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 17040 [USA]: Consequence of non-compliance: if a vehicle crash should occur, occupant protection levels could be reduced.

system: structure; frame; members and body; fmvss no.208.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles.Note: all vehicles have been repurchased. No other owners will be contacted.

  • Recall 16639 [USA]: This condition can result in separation of the frontbushing sleeve subassembly from the control arm increasing the potential for a vehicle crash.
These vehicles have been built with welds missing from the front suspension lower control arm assemblies causing excessive loads on the existing welds.
dealers will inspect both left-hand and right-hand front suspension lower control arm assemblies and replace all control arm assemblies found with omitted welds.
system: suspension; independent front control arm; lower.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles.Note: if your vehicle is presented to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and the remedy is not provided free of charge within a reasonable time, contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or pontiac at 1-800-762-2737. • Recall 2002041 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain passenger vehicles if the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts. If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. Correction: dealers will install a relay kit in these vehicles to prevent high current from flowing through the ignition switch.

  • Recall 2000109 [Canada]: Engine
Note: certain 1997-99 vehicles in ontario, quebec and the atlantic provinces and 1995-99 vehicles in all other provinces and territories. Moisture may enter the powertrain control module (pcm) as a result of corrosion after extended exposure to road salt. This can lead to symptoms including illumination of the "check engine" light or the engine running rough. If these symptoms are ignored the engine may stall and may not be able to be restarted. Correction: dealers will seal the powertrain control module (pcm) in a protective shield/cover assembly.

  • Recall 1999016 [Canada]: Engine
On certain vehicles located in ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island and newfoundland, moisture entering the powertrain control module (pcm) as a result of corrosion can cause illumination of the "check engine" light or cause the engine to run rough. If these symptoms are ignored, the engine may stall and may not be able to be restarted. Correction: dealers will inspect, clean and/or replace the powertrain control module (pcm), then seal the pcm in a protective shield/cover assembly.

  • Recall 1996005 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
Note: vehicles with automatic transmissions. These vehicles do not comply with c.M.V.S.S. 101 - control location and identification. The instrument panel trim plate may sag and cover the light emitting diode of the shift indicator display. If this occurs, the driver may not be able to determine the actual position of the transaxle gear selector and could inadvertently leave an idling vehicle in drive, reverse or neutral rather than in park. This could result in a vehicle crash. Correction: a new instrument panel cluster trim plate/bezel assembly will be installed on affected vehicles.

  • Recall 1996208 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
These vehicles may not comply with c.M.V.S.S. 108 - lighting equipment. Vehicles may exhibit a condition in which the front and/or rear hazard warning lamps (four-way flashers) do not flash when the hazard switch is activated. Correction: vehicles will be inspected and hazard lamp switch replaced if necessary.

  • Recall 1995023 [Canada]: Suspension
These vehicles may have been built with welds omitted from the front suspension lower control arm assemblies. This condition could cause excessive loads on existing control arm welds, and could result in separation of the front bushing-sleeve subassembly from the control arm. This could result in reduced steering control and a crash without prior warning. Correction: suspension lower control arms will be inspected and those found with omitted welds will be replaced.

Head gasket leaked coolant and was replaced at 44,941 miles. It started leaking again at 54,313 and had to be replaced. Pontiac won't cover it because the car is more than 7 years old and dealer won't cover it because it was more than one year when it had to be replaced the second time. What's the problem with this head gasket anyway??

In fulfillment of recall 02008-s, a gm dealership claims that replacement of the starter wiring harness will destroy the terminal on the solenoid, resulting in the required replacement of both the solenoid and starter motor. Both parts are in good working order but gm will not cover the cost of this damage, approx $260. In short, a rusty terminal will probably break when removed. For this, gm wants to sell a new starter with solenoid at full price. I have confirmed the likelihood of the damage with an independent mechanic. Gm refused me directly upon appeal. This is a very important recall, though relatively simple to implement. The car is only 7 years old. Gm should be required to cover the full cost of implementation, without profiting on an otherwise unnecessary replacement of expensive components. Gm could replace just the solenoid or perhaps even just the terminal. The wire lead could be properly spliced without terminal removal. This possibility (or perhaps probability) was not mentioned in the recall notice or in converations with the dealer prior to the recall work. I am arranging to have the solenoid alone replaced for approx. $140. I suggest that gm be ordered to reimburse customers for this and other costs required to implement the recall fully and to cover them directly from this point forward. I would not be surprised to learn that gm has already installed a significant number of new starters at owners' expense.

We have had this car for about 2 years, and have had problems since the beginning. First thing was the cooling fan. It quit working about 6 months after we bought the car. We had that fixed then started having other electrical problems. The brake lights would work here and there, the turn signals would work one day and not the next, now they don't work at all. The abs light would flash off and on and the brake light would come on also. We know that filing this complaint will not fix the problems we are having with the car, we just wanted to make it known that we will never buy another pontiac due to the problems we are having with this one. Thank you for your time. *jb

Torque converter clutch failure caused a vibration in the drivetrain from 35mph to 50mph. The dealer suggested disconecting the clutch as the cheapest way to stop the problem. The car has since lost about 3mpg. This was not the right way to fix this problem. The head gasket started leaking around 55,000 miles. A pontiac service manger told me it would cost about $500.00 to fix the leak,,or i could put some "bars leak' in the coolant to seal up the leak. Again this is the cheap way out for a while, but not the correct way to fix the problem. The dealerships i dealt with already knew that these problems were found in this model car,but stopped short of saying it was a manufacturing problem. *ak

NoNoN NoneNone

Problem: knocking noise heard from front suspension when going over bumps. I have had the car inspected by three different auto repair shops, including the dealer where the car was purchased. The dealer said he would start with the front strut and mount (no garantee that the problem will be corrected). I have received a total of three different diagnosis over the last two weeks. These include, the lower tie rod, the rack and pinnion steering system and a front strut and mount. Since i can't get consensus, i have not had the problem corrected as yet. If i repaired the components they said were defective, it would cost me in excess of $1500. All the auto shops have told me this is not a safety concern and that the component(s) will not fail catastrophically. I'm not necessarily convinced. The noise is very disturbing. This condition has only been audible for about 1 month. Your database indicates that others have had the same complaint (see service bulletin no. Gm53-32-02).
