Takata recall, airbag

The handle to the hatch broke off so many times after properly being repaired we installed a strap handle to the hatch so that we only need to touch the button and pull the strap. The damaged handle would prevent the hatch from shutting properly. The rear tail lights will suddenly blow fuses and mechanics can not find out why. This leaves you suddenly with no tail lights which have resulted in being pulled over many times and a few tickets. I have taken to keeping the repair ticket with me to avoid tickets at dawn and dusk. The car is unsafe to drive at night and can not seem to find why the fuse is blowing. This began happening before the warranty ran out had fixed many times. Last time it occurred was 2 months ago.

Aer bag lite on dashboard....Worried to explode as i ,m driving ??

Rear sub frame where the rear axle mounting brackets are rust out. Also side rockers rot out due to poor drainage of plastic side skirts

Power windows on the left side of the vehicle have issues; back windows no longer works, front driver side will go up in stages but only if actively moving. Driver seatbelt unlatches. Been going on for at least 5 months if not longer.

Accident involved on hwy traveling 65 -70 miles, rainy conditions, car was in motion and skidded a unknown length, hitting the rear end of a stopped vehicle on freeway, and 3x larger in size than the scion. The air bag on driver side and passenger side did not deploy. The driver has suffered injuries to the neck, spine,legs and chest. There was not a passenger. The scion has been deemed totaled at a loss. The injuries sustained were due to not being protected from the airbag.

05 xb trunk release handle broke loose. It was attached by 2 small studs that were friction fitted to the handle, the trunk is too heavy for this handle. Power door lock for driver and both rear are not functioning. Rear passenger window is not functioning.

I drive a 2005 scion xb, about two weeks ago the back hatch handle broke of, where the light shine to the license plate. I know that there was a recall on the handle like three years ago... I called toyota to see if the recall was expired, they don't see a recall ever been done. I do see this as a safety do to lighting and electrical. I know this has been an issue with other scion like the one i have. Some did get a recall and got fixed.

The air bag light came on and stayed on. We had our local mechanic look at it and he said the steering column needed to be taken apart to fix it. This sounds exactly like the current toyota recall for the spiral cable assembly yet my scion is not on the list of recalled vehicles. *tr

My scion overheated,lost oil pressure due to whatever damage the overheating caused and i've had a low battery charge all this time but none of these problems were indicated by any gauge or light on my dash. Now i have to replace the motor. *tr

The rear hatch door handle came off in my hand and is now dangling by the wires for the tag lights which is a safety hazard as it may fall off while driving down the road and cause an accident. *tr

I own 2005 scion xb first incident -thursday evening 6:30 pm, july 11, 2013 in martinez, california i was driving on the city street at about 25 mph. The car suddenly accelerated by itself to 40-45 mph. I braked (foot brake, hand brake & using gear) before almost hitting the car in front of me. Luckily it stopped with a loud braking noise; i ended up close to the side of the street but still not clear from the traffic lane. I tried to restart and move out of the way but the acceleration sound was horrible and the gear was locked up. I opened the hood and checked the accelerator cable, flipping the spring loaded cable back and forth, and it seemed to be loose on the cable spool. I then re-started the car, but it was still revving very fast, so i turned it off and continued flipping the accelerator cable until it appeared to be tighter. When i re-started it this time it was running normally at reduced rpms about 30 minutes after the incident. I drove back home slowly (one mile away) on the city streets. I drove it slowly to auto shop the next day. Checked by mtz automotive in martinez, california on friday, july 12, 2013. They found no problem. But i am scared to drive. Do not know what to do. I was driving my 2005 scion xb . As i slowed down to stop my car accelerated right through the stop sign across the highway and into a barbwire fence.. When i applied the brakes the engine accelerated . My 10 year old son was simply opening the back hatch to get out a bag and the whole rear door garnish broke off. It broke from simple designed use and now hangs off the vehicle and the hatch will not close properly. Driving on an access road, a car stopped suddenly in front of me at low speed, and i stepped on brakes hard and they did not work. Have had acceleration problems in past and reported to dealership. Car was included in the recall of cruise control sticking and acceleration and odometer going out and dashboard. Airbags deployed prematurely and did not inflate fully. Service light sticking preventing inspection until dealership can order part resulting in two traffic violations of no inspection even though presenting documentation of seeking inspection and failed. Replaced part on service bulletin, replaced three windshields having nothing hitting it but cracking anyway,back trunk handle broke,glove compartment broke,seat belt problems,car total loss by insurance company even though front had no damage visible, severe damage to front bumper underneath=six thousand dollar estimate-no transportation now-unsafe car , was loyal toyota customer but this is not a safe car four sets of tires before forty thousand miles, factory put wrong size on care, private tire company identified problem and tire rims were damaged. This was a rip off car. Bought new-never again. *kb

By 2011, both back windows inoperable (motor burned out due to electrical issues) and i am having issues with the air conditioning and electrical dash display. The dealer (avenues toyota in jacksonville, fl) said there are no recalls and instructed me to call toyota directly about the problem. The dealer wants to charge me $500 each to replace the motor in both back windows and claims there are no issues that they are aware of at this time. I found numerous claims on the internet to substantiate that this is not an isolated case and the electrical issues extend throughout the toyota line during the time the vehicle was manufactured. *tr

The power door locks and windows work sporadically. This has been going on for at least 7 years. Sometimes the door lock won't unlock manually either. The windows seem like they run out of power and the back passenger one stopped going down.

2005 scion xb windshield crack in the midline, between the wipers. For no apparent reason the crack continuously increasing length. Didn't hit anything nor it occured from some object. Bought this car used from the dealer and from the looks of it this windshield is not oem stock, might be replaced windshield and possibly this issue has occured before. *tr

Hatch handle, made of flimsy plastic and held on by a couple of screws, broke off. This part, which contains the handle, lock mechanism and the license plate light, gets a lot of use, opening and closing the hatch, and is not very well made for the amount of use it is subjected too. *tr

Rear hatch outside opening mechanism broke after routine use. This appears to be design flaw using flimsy plastic door apparatus. This is dangerous situation - it has resulted in improper closing of rear hatch door which can cause exhaust fumes to enter the inside on the car. This could also cause objects to fall out of the rear of the car while on the road. (anecdotal note: i see numerous scions of this era with taped up rear hatch door handles indicating that they have the same problem. *tr

Trunk latch came off, made of plastic and held by two screws, happened twice, first time had to glue screw to thread on plastic latch base but it wont hold. Door will not open while this problem persists. A 4 door xb without a trunk access? C'mon man!! *tr

Driving about 4 miles an hour, the accelerator over powered the brake system. Rpm's where maxed even after the initial collision. With foot on the brakes and in park, the vehicle moved forward another 3 -4 feet to hit the same car again. The car will still move with the e-brake operated and full force on the brake pedal. *tr

1. Driver's side lock intermittently won't open from inside. Neither manually nor pressing the key fob will open. The only way to open the door is from the outside and manually using the handle. I have taken this to 2 toyota dealers and nothing has been done about it. *tr

I have a 2005 scion xb. I have 2 children that sit in the back seat in booster seats. The lap belts are really loose on this vehicle(my children can actually stand up on the floor and move to the middle seat with the seat belt buckled in, don't know if this is normal). Yesterday my daughter was pulling on her belt while i was driving and looped it around her neck. Since the belt is so loose it didn't bother her. When she unbuckled the belt the belt went up into the wall and tightened around her neck. At that point it wasn't choking her and i ran around there (passenger rear) and tried to help. Her head would not fit through the loop to get her out. I could not get the seat belt to come out any because it was locked up. The more we struggled the tighter the seat belt kept getting around her neck. It started to choke her and i grabbed a pair of scissors that i keep in the glove department and cut the belt. I only recently started keeping scissors in the car and if i did not have them my daughter would probably be dead right now. I would have had to watch her get strangled to death and nothing i could do. I don't understand why there is not some kind of emergency release to unlock a seat belt in an emergency. She should not have been playing with the seat belt, but kids do stupid things, and there should be an emergency way to release that seat belt. I know have to pay almost $300 to fix the seat belt, but i guess that is a small price to pay for what could have been the alternative.

Apparent design defect whereby heavy weight of rear vertical tailgate door places stress on two plastic connectors. No practical way to open door from inside or out. Part also houses rear license plate lights and electronic opening latch control which becomes inoperable. Dozens of similar experiences posted on edmonds.Com. Dealer refused to fix out of warranty period. After complaint to toyota, they agreed to reimburse for part cost only as one time concession. *tr

While entering a freeway with full acceleration the gas pedal stuck. The car was out of control and after applying the brakes put it in neutral it finally unstuck. Scion xb 2005 soon after this happened all the warning lights came on (service engine brake light etc. Took it to the dealer and they replaced a computer. I do not know if the problem was due to the computer failure but it did happen at approximately the same time. *tr

As i slowed down and turned into a parking space when i applied the brakes the engine accelerated to 3000 rpms jumped the curb and ran into the back of the building. I was a passenger in the back seat of my '05 scion when we were rear ended at low impact approx 15 mpr. I immediately felt intense pain between my shoulder blades from the impact of the frame around backseat and headrest area. I have been receiving treatment for my injury ever since. Had it not been for the metal frame within the back of the backseat, i would not have any injury. Several lights turn on console due to technical recall. Dealership did not fix issue due to lights not being on. I've taken to 2 other mechanics who said take car to dealership. I was driving southbound on delaware state highway 1 towards ocean city, maryland, maintained a constant speed of 50 mph when the tail pipe on the scion xb 2005 released series 2.0 fell off without warning. It bounced against the road, flew up, and hit the suv driving behind me in the windshield. Fortunately, the windshield did not crack, and the driver , after we both pulled to the side of the road, drove off without incident. I was unable to find the tail pipe. The vehicle has approximately 45,000 miles on it, and has been kept in excellent working condition with frequent routine maintenance. Only 2500 of the cars with this muffler were produced, and over a dozen complaints were easily observable online. I was happy that the car behind me was an suv instead of a motorcycle, as the flying tailpipe could have seriously injured a motorcycle driver. I am presently attempting to replace the part, but my local dealership informed me that it wa sno longer available. Scion has replied that the dealer needed to search for the part number via the vin number, and i am awaiting the result on this count.*ak

June 19, 2007 i noticed that my muffler was louder than usual and noticed that the tip of my muffler was missing. I own a scion 2005 xb release series 2.0 vehicle. There were 2500 of these cars manufactured and they have a special dc sport exhaust system. The dealer initially told me that i would have to replace the entire exhaust system and that it would not be covered under the warranty. Upon looking at the web site entitled scionlife.Com, i found a forum that contained many scion xb release series 2.0 owners whose muffler tips had come apart. I provided this information to the dealer. The noise inside my vehicle can be oppressive when i step on the gas pedal. July 6, 2007 the dealer states that he is ordering a muffler and that it will be covered under the warranty. As of july 19, the part is still on order. After seeing the number of people that have experienced the same problem with the muffler on these vehicles, i believe that it is a defective muffler and should be recalled before someone is injured by a flying muffler tip. The manufacturer should replace these mufflers with a safer and more reliable exhaust system. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota scion xb. While driving at various speeds, the tip of the muffler would sporadically crack and then fall off. Prior to the failure, the contact heard a loud noise. He took the vehicle to a dealer and they stated that the exhaust system was potentially defective and they replaced the exhaust. One year later, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. I am now forced to replace my windshield for the third time on my scion xb 05'. Every time it starts out with a tiny chip that leads to a crack that spreads quickly. The design of the car and the angle of the glass contribute to this problem. *jb

We have a 2005 scion xb we have had to have the windshield replaced twice so far due to cracks caused by rocks. In addition we have had to have chips repaired several times. I have heard that this seems to be a common issue with scion xb's but even though scion is no help. In all my years of having cars i have never had any type of problem like this and have never had to have a windsheild replaced. This car seems like you have to replace a windshield like you replace your oil !! I have contacted scion with no luck or no remendy. *nm

While opening the rear hatch door the handle snapped and no longer can be used to open the door. The electric no longer works on the passenger side of the vehicle, i can not open or lock these doors. The dash board lights remain on no matter how often i take it back to the dealer to fix. These problems are expensive to repair and it seems they can not repair these problems. *tr

My scion sb has had the rear hatch lock, and lighting with license plate break 5 times, scion dealer did it first and charged $599.00. Since then i have bought the parts and did the work myself. *tr

(1) cornering hard at high speed (45-60 mph) (2) my 2005 scion xb's abs system applies the brakes without my touching the brake pedal. This causes the car to veer opposite away from the direction i'm steering toward the oncoming traffic lane or off the road. (3) the mechanic at the toyota dealership indicated that this is normal for that braking system and he could not repair it. *nm

Subject: 2005 scion xb structural safety item after purchase of the above automobile it was discovered there is no mechanical way to open the rear trunk door. It has no key, no external handle, and no cable release. Entry and exit is dependent solely on the battery-powered wireless remote control. If that should fail or break, one has to climb into the rear and remove a panel secured with fasteners to release the lock. Consider - south florida with numerous water-filled canals - across alligator alley cars run into canals often, nose-first. Driver has no way to release rear lock. Your office recently issued a directive to install emergency internal lock releases for normal car trunks. How did the scion pass inspection? I tried contacting the scion organization on this subject, and was unable to speak to anyone with any knowledge of this subject. Should you concur with my report, perhaps scion could be encouraged to provide a fix. *jb

On four different occurrences (6/2005 and 8/2005, 6/20,2006 and 6/23, 2006) while driving and approaching a stoplight, the car revved up and lunged forward. Car was brought to the dealership on july 3, 2006 and they could find nothing wrong. *nm

Front end collision on 2005 toyota scion xb, both sensors were smashed and air bags did not deploy! *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the airbags did not deploy during a collision. The vehicle was side swiped then hit a rock wall with the passenger side front end. This occurred at 65 mph and the damage was between the corner and headlights. The seatbelts were worn, but the occupants received minor injuries. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and has not been seen by a mechanic.

Earlier in 2011 while accessing the rear of my car through the hatch door, my hatch handle snapped off completely. After further looking into the issue, i discovered that the plastic clips built into the handles broke. My local toyota dealer is aware of the "issue" and acknowledges that it is a "defect" with this specific make and model car. On top of that, i have both seen many broken hatch handles while on the road, and read many other incidents similar to mine on several notable scion forums online. Others report that their toyota dealers fixed the issue, free part, but still charged upwards of $100 for labor. I would like to see this problem get fixed by toyota as it is clearly a defective part. *tr

*****attention***** *****scion xb seat belts very dangerous for little kids********* rear driver side seat belts locking to the point of extreme pain and suffocation. The belt mechanism once locked it continues to rachet backward to its locking state so that if one leans back on the seat you become glued to it. The seat belt will not give in forward which makes difficult to reach the unlatch button. This is extremely dangerous for young children!. My son (7 yrs old) fell asleep while on the freeway only to wake up with his seat belt locked, i suggested to lean backward on the seat to give it some slack and then to pull forward, to my surprised the seat belt became tighter. Once i pulled over it had become so tight around my son's chest that it was causing him pain and difficulty breathing. I immediately attempted to unlatch it but it was impossible to push the button down. The only option was to remove the rear side panel (behind the back seat) and remove the entire locking mechanism from the car frame. It's been two days since the incident and the belt is still locked. This is very dangerous!!! And if it were to happen in a fender bender, fire or an accident could possibly cause serious injury if not death... I'm very concerned will get rid off this car..... I will be filing a complaint to the manufacturer. *nm

The driver door detent on the 2005 scion xb vin jtlk324154008954 does not hold on a modest incline, creating a serious injury hazard. Reported problem to dealer (riverhead toyota). Response: "vehicle not designed to. No problem found". The dealer is wrong. There is a problem. The problem appears to be a combination of 2 problems -- an inadequate detent for the weight of the door combined with application of excessive white grease. Toyota needs to design a stronger detent and all service personnel need to be warned not to apply any grease to the detent and to remove any grease applied at the factory or in prior service. *nm

The first night that i drove it, i was in the hilly country and noticed what i thought was a serious problem. With low beam on the light does not shine any higher than about 3 feet off the ground. Going down the hill the lights only shine on the bottom of the hill, not up the other side like a normal vehicle. When i reached the bottom of the hill, my wife screamed at me. There in the middle of the road was a large buck. The lights did not illuminate him. With another car coming i couldn't use my bright. I took it to the dealer a few days later because they had only 2 mechanics and couldn't handle anymore work. They called me that friday and told me to bring it in monday. No-one at that dealership knew how the lights were supposed to work. No knowledge of the trucks they sell. The master mechanic worked on it twice. He told me that he drove his daughters tundra and that what i had described was fact. He also stated that it was very dangerous. I have contacted toyota corporate complaints. They had no idea why it was like that. After 3 telephone calls to try and get some satisfactory after the sale customer service, from a dealership where there is none, i was told that the dealership closed my case. I will not drive at night. Too dangerous. *jb

Passenger side front seat belt (may apply to rear belts as well) retractor does not function properly. The belts appear to have a limit set on them that is too short for the vehicle configuration. A simple act such as leaning forward slightly in the passenger seat to open the glove box can cause the seat belt to limit up and begin it's lock down. It then begins to ratchet backwards and will not give in the forward direction at all. If the passenger leans back it tightens further, and becomes difficult to disengage from the latch mechanism. The only option if the limit is accidentally reached is to undo the seat belt, let it all the way back, and pull it out again. My wife and i often find ourselves having to do it while on the freeway or in other situations where the vehicle is in motion, because of the ratcheting action. This is completely unacceptable. The driver's belt is the only one that seems to function properly without this limit and ratchet back system. Driver's side has no issues for the same person doing actions that may reach even further than the passenger might normally do. Also, paint very easily chips and scratches. Leaning against the car too hard, or accidentally running a fingernail on it causes severe white scratches to appear on my dark red scion xb. *nm

Glass roof/sunroof assembly constantly creaks and pops. Taken to dealership and tsb performed, noises went away for approximately 2 weeks and noise returned. Took back to dealership, was informed it needed "lubrication" and it should be fine, noises have returned again. Also, the hatchback always rattles, as recommended by a scion message board, slightly larger bump stops were purchased, which lessened the rattling, but is still present when going over bumps, sounds like if hatch was not fully closed, but it is. All of the above information is for a scion tc, option for this vehicle was not available in complaint form so a scion xb was selected. *jb

The windshield in my vehicle is not very good. In the first two weeks it cracked and soon after i had another crack. I did not hear any hit on my windshield while driving. I think that it is the way the vehicle is built. I have heard the same complaint from other car owners so i thought i would voice me concern here. Thank you *tr

Dt: the brake system (not abs) failed. She was not getting a warning sign when the brakes were going bad. Dealership and the manufacturer said that it was normal wear and tear. The brakes went out at 12,000 miles. *ak

On, 4 jan 2006, my daughter was driving a toyota scion xb, 2005. She attempted to stop behind a vehicle that has stopped at a yield sign. She could not stop because the throttle had stuck. She ran into another vehicle, damaging her front end. *nm

There is a driving problem with a new car when starting it with a cold engine. The vehicle bucks and jerks when driving at slow speed until the engine is warmed up. The vehicle does not produce trouble codes. Therefore, the dealer claims it is operating normally although the jerking and bucking is quite disruptive and not at all normal. *ak
