MAINTENANCE INFORMATION DATE : SUBJECT : MI19-06 February 2019 SECTION : 12 BRAKE & PNEUMATIC Prevost Brake Caliper Orientation on Drive Axle First Release 02-07-2019 APPLICATION Model All Models Model Year : 2014+ VIN All vehicles equipped with N2G Brakes H-Series Vehicles from: 2PCH3349XEC712486 X-Series Vehicles from: 2PCG33497EC735526 DESCRIPTION This Maintenance Information is published to answer some questions regarding the inverted or “trailing” mounting position of the drive axle brake calipers on Prevost vehicles. Please take note that: Since the introduction of N2G brakes (see application table above), all Prevost vehicles are equipped with Bendix/Knorr-Bremse disc brake calipers installed in a trailing configuration on the drive axle. This configuration (also called inverted), although not the Bendix/Knorr-Bremse preferred way of mounting the caliper, was found by Prevost to deliver satisfactory performance and good brake pad durability. Trailing configuration is approved by Bendix/Knorr-Bremse as an alternate mounting method and is described in their Application Guideline (see below). This configuration also complies with the DOT requirements regarding brake pad indicator position. MI19-06 Page 2 / 2 INFORMATION FROM KNORR-BREMSE APPLICATION GUIDELINES (Y042177_2_EN_007) 5.1 Choice of the direction of rotation Brakes must be mounted on an axle as a pair. The position of the fixed guide pin relative to the direction of rotation of the brake disc has an effect on the fatigue characteristics of the brake assembly. Depending on the direction of rotation of the brake disc, the assembly is designated “leading” or “trailing” relative to the fixed guide pin. The position of the fixed guide pin is determined by the available space. Most applications trailing by KNORRBREMSE SFN were found to have a longer working life in the “leading” configuration. Nevertheless all applications should be considered from a theoretical point of view and also trailing on a practical basis.
