NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 151018 [USA]: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. an underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. these scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
Honda (american honda motor co.) is recalling certain 1998 acura 2.2cl, 1998-1999 acura 2.3cl, 1998-1999 acura 3.0cl, 2001 acura 3.2cl and acura mdx, 1998-2000 honda accord coupe, accord sedan, civic sedan, odyssey and acura 3.5rl, 1999-2000 acura 3.2tl, 1996-2000 civic coupe, 1997-2000 cr-v, 1997-1998 ev plus, and 1998-1999 isuzu oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with non-azide driver air bag inflators (nadi) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (psan) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the nadi inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began october 1, 2020. Owners may contact american honda's customer support & campaign center at 1-888-234-2138 or isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.
owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 61486 [USA]: Excessive corrosion can cause spring failure and a broken spring could puncture a front tire, which increases the risk of a crash.
On certain sport utility vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia. In areas where large quantities of road salt are used, the front suspension coil springs have insufficient corrosion protection, and may be susceptible to corrosion.
dealers will replace both front springs with improved springs. The recall began on october 11, 2005. Owners may contact acura at 800-382-2238.
honda/acura recall no. P92.Customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 62615 [USA]: Gear failure could result in transmission lockup, which could result in a crash.
On some mini vans, sport utility and passenger vehicles, certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission, eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or gear breakage.
on vehicles with 15,000 miles or less, the dealer will update the transmission with a simple revision to the oil cooler return line to increase lubrication to the second gear. On vehicles with more than 15,000 miles, the dealer will inspect the transmission to identify gears that have already experienced discoloration due to overheating. If discoloration exists, the transmission will be replaced if discoloration is not present, the dealer will perform the revision to the oil cooler return line. The recall began on april 21, 2004, for pilot, odyssey, and mdx owners. Owners of the accord vehicles will start receiving letters on june 28, 2004, and on june 29, 2004, for owners of the tl and cl vehicles. Owners should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009 or acura at 1-800-382-2238.
honda recall nos. P30 (odyssey and pilot),p31 (mdx), p38 (accord) and p39 (acura).Customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 2020015 [Canada]: Airbag
Issue: on certain vehicles, exposure to moisture over time could cause the driver-front airbag not to inflate properly in a crash. In some cases, this could cause an airbag not to fully inflate, while in others it could cause it to deploy with more force than normal. It could also cause the inflator to rupture. If the airbag inflator ruptures, small pieces of metal could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag and prevent its proper function. Note: this recall is for airbag inflators that may have been installed when the vehicle had the steering wheel airbag replaced. Safety risk: in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the driver-front airbag may not inflate properly or the inflator could rupture. This could create a risk of injury. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. There may be a significant delay before replacement parts are available. The company will send you a second letter once replacement parts are available and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the driver-front airbag inflator. If the inflator requires replacement, a newly design part will be installed.

  • Recall 2005260 [Canada]: Suspension
On certain vehicles, the front suspension coil springs may have received insufficient corrosion protection during manufacturing and, in areas where road salt is used, may be susceptible to corrosion. Additionally, rubber sleeves were applied near the top and bottom of some springs to eliminate noise. The sleeves can trap salt water, increasing the potential for excessive corrosion. Over time, excessive corrosion can cause spring failure. Spring breakage in the bottom sleeve area could puncture the tire. Correction: dealers will replace both front coil springs.

  • Recall 2004143 [Canada]: Powertrain
Certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission, eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or, in very rare cases, gear breakage can occur. Gear failure could result in transmission lock-up. Correction: on vehicles with 24 000 kms or less, the dealer will update the transmission with a simple revision to the oil cooler return line to increase lubrication to second gear. On vehicles with more than 24 000 kms, the dealer will inspect the transmission to identify gears that have already experienced discoloration due to overheating. If discolouration exists, the transmission will be replaced. If discolouration is not present, the dealer will perform the revision to the oil cooler return line.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Front coil spring breakage investigation as of 20050714

In an august 29, 2005 letter, honda notified nhtsa that it had identified a defect in the front coil springs of certain model year 2001 and early-2002 acura mdx sport utility vehicles.According to honda, some front suspension coil springs have insufficient corrosion protection and, in areas where road salts are used, may be susceptible to corrosion.Rubber sleeves applied near the top and bottom of some springs to eliminate noise can trap salt water, increasing the potential for excessive corrosion.Over time, excessive corrosion can cause spring failure. In some cases, a broken spring could puncture a front tire, which increases the risk of a crash.Evidence of tire damage was identified in at least 4 (29%) of the spring fracture reports and 13 (21%) of the warranty claims. One report also indicated that a fractured spring damaged a brake line failure, resulting in extended stopping distance. To correct the condition, honda is recalling approximately 22,861 mdx vehicles sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia where large quantities of road salt are used (honda recall p92, nhtsa recall 05v-385).There were no complaints or warranty claims involving vehicles from outside the recall region.Dealers will replace both front suspension coil springs with improved springs.

When driving the car will shift into neutral. The only way to accelerate is to manually shift the gear shift into neutral and then back to drive. This occurs frequently at stops. There was a recall for this issue in 2004. The acura dealership in fort worth, texas indicated that the recalled part was replaced, however, this issue has re-occurred or was not properly fixed in the first instance. This is likely due to a replacement of the same defective transmission part. I have requested the acura dealership to look at the transmission as it relates to the recall (recall number 04v17600). Although they are aware that this is the issue, they refuse to redress the problem. They state that i will need to pay for an entire new transmission. This is an issue with the acura components and not a problem caused by the driver. Acura should be required to fix the issue. They are making the road unsafe for drivers at the driver's expense.

Travelling on city street tire came off with my 2 year old son and 14 year old brother in-law with me in the car. Purchased vehicle from travis @ kts auto sales on 09/23/19 on 09/24/19 the car was considered unsafe and basically not driveable.. Prior to my purchase of the vehicle travis told me he had the vehicle 3 weeks and counting and had been commuting his son back and forth to school and told me for sure the vehicle ran good and drove good. Well it dont and hasnt since the day after i purchased it. The only thing he will and has offered or tried to do to make it right is to trade it back for an old honda crv in possibly worse condition and way less in value than the vehicle i paid for, i have 3 children ( and travis knows i do) so i took the honda crv on a test drive anyways considering i have kids and really need a running and driving car and stopped bye my mechanic to take a quick look at it and he did and said absolutely not that he wouldn't not trade the original one we bought for the honda crv and said if it were him he wouldn't even pay scrap value for the crv it was rusted all the way around the entire car inderneath and around my mechanic said it was very unsafe that if we were to barely get hit or hit something it would crumble and fall apart and that this vehicle he was trying to give me to replace another unsafe vehicle would be even more dangerous than the 1st vehicle was. Also travis from kts lied when he said he had driven the car 3 weeks+ because i got to looking in to see how often vehicle was maintained and this and that found out he only had it 12 days befor selling the vehicle to me (that's not even 2 weeks!!)

Automatic transmission- i bought my 2001 acura mdx in march 2019 it has ran fine until august 2019. It started making a loud clanking noise on and off when i took out of reverse, then at about 40-50 mph it starts having a vibration then goes away at other speeds. About a week ago while driving straight down the interstate at 65 mph with my cruise control set my rpm went up to 5000 so i tapped on break which made it go back down to normal, so i went to accelerate back up to speed and nothing happened other then it acting as though i was driving in neutral and then it was fine again for a split second so i turned my hazards on and slowed down more and pulled off into gas station to see what was going on and noticed atf all over the place the ground was covered. I had to get trailer to get it home, once i did i pulled out my chilton's handbook for it to see if could figure out the issue was and it shows that the 2001 has a recall on the automatic transmission, but when i get online it only shows the recall if i put in 2001 acura mdx it doesn't show it with my vin. Number. Can i still get this recall issue fixed and if so how do i get it fixed? I called my local acura dealer and they told me to get on here to get more information.

I purchased my 2001 acura mdx in march 2019. Since purchase the car consistently makes a loud clunk when shifting the gear shifter into reverse. It also clunks consistently going from park to drive. There is hesitation in the cars shifting. At times i either have to speed up or let speed off for a transmission shift to occur. The car shudders horribly when braking at low or medium speeds. It feels unsafe and scary and only a matter of time before a complete wipe out occurs. Seeing this as a ongoing problem with this vehicle and yet california is not in the vehicle recalls seems ridiculous. These happen on city streets and highways daily while driving said vehicle.

The goodyear viva 3 set of tires installed on my vehicle the first of the year have less than 3000 miles on them and i have had six flats once i had 3 in one day.. I am registering a complaint against goodyear, the manufacturer of the viva3 now, because the last (today the 7th flat caused by a pin prick size hole in the outer sidewall) tires do not get pin sie holes in the sidewall except by defect. These tires,on their wheel are lighter weight than my smaller size convenience spare (donut). I can almost push my finger through the rubber on the sidewall and pushing on the tread flattens the tire when deflated. The treads are so far apart 25 % of the tires are bald at installation.

Takata recall i have a 2001 aura mdx and when i first got the vehicle w months ago like 2 weeks after i was on the freeway and the d 5 light started to flash the speedometer went all the way down and the rpm was high then the speedometer went back up it did it a couple of times but i was still going the same speed it jerked a little bit i pulled over tried to put in park but it was stuck so i pushed the shift unlock and i was able to put it in park then everything seemed fine but the check engine light stayed on now a month in a half later it would stall to go when i'm taking off the roads were blocked off so i attempted to do a u turn i pulled in someone's parking lot and tried to reverse out and couldn't it would just rev two guys helped me and pushed it out thank god i had my infant with me and older daughter i was able to go forward to make it back home but the whole way the car was revving loud and the rpm was high and when came to. A stop it would rev then jerk hard and go luckily i didn't crash into the car in front of me there should definitely be a recall on these considering seeing how many people have the same issue ita crazy and i had always thought acuras were very good running cars please fix this issue in overall i love the acura mdx and would have hoped it lasted me longer i hope it is addressed thank you *tr

A bolt fell out of my rack in pinion steering. It caused me to lose a lot of control of the steering while driving (just before getting on a highway). I still had some steering, but i had to drive slow and the direction of the steering wheel had no relation to my direction. (i.E. The steering wheel was at 90 degrees and i was proceeding straight.) eventually, i completely lost the ability to turn left. Note: i am reporting this, because acura failed to include me in a recall of a shock, because they did a regional recall. I bought and drove the car for 4 years in cleveland, oh (included). But i moved to colorado (excluded) and i was not covered. My shock broke dec 24th on a highway and the tire shreded at 55mph. Acura took tons of info from me, but took no responsibility.

Two issues with drive-train: first is a grind/rumble (like driving over a highway rumble strip) felt at low speeds (20-30 mph) with light acceleration. Shakes vehicle slightly. Can be reproduced. Vehicle can accelerate through the grinding/rumbling by further depressing accelerator and sometimes accelerates through the 20-30 mph range without noticeable grinding/rumbling. If, however, the vehicle is accelerating slowly and it does begin to grind/rumble, maintaining a consistent speed/rpm level (without drastic change in road surface or grade that would cause computer to change gear due to increased/decreased friction) the driver can create a continued duration of the grinding/rumbling until releasing of further depressing the accelerator to change out of that gear/rpm/speed/load combination which results in the grinding/rumbling described above. The second issue is a whirring/lugging during highway speed cruising on level surface with d5 automatic transmission gear engaged. Once the vehicle accelerates above around 45 mph, more consistently at speeds above 50 mph, on level terrain at consistent speed via accelerator or cruise-controlled, the vehicle will frequently increase by approximately 200-300 rpm and begin to make a whirring sound which lasts a few seconds then the rpm return to previous speed and the whirring subsides. A few seconds later the same thing occurs and this cycle continues throughout the duration of the maintained speed. The phenomenon is more noticeable with cruise-control as the speed and rpms likely have more computer regulation but it is also noticeable without cruise-control engaged. My concern is that in either situation the transmission internals could be worn in a manner not intended by manufacturer resulting in overheating or breaking of internal components that could cause a sudden and violent reaction of the speeding vehicle.

The 2001 acura mdx touring is equipped with front driver and front passenger heated seats controlled by three-position rocker switches (one switch to control driver seat a second switch to control passenger seat) in the center console allowing passenger to choose between low-off-high temperature settings. The seats are designed to warm the seat cushion and the lumbar cushion of both front driver and front passenger seats. Currently, the front passenger seat works as designed. The front driver seat, however, only heats the lumbar cushion when the heater is engaged and the seat cushion does not heat. While cleaning the vehicle i noticed white rubber underneath the driver seat. The rubber looked like wire insulation and some of the pieces looked to be charred. I suspect that the heating element could have broken or shorted somehow causing the wire insulation to crack and over time to disintegrate. My concern is that a break in the heating element and/or circuitry could result in a short or spark or even a fire which could cause harm to the driver if sitting in that seat were such an event to occur and potentially cause a hazardous situation if such an event occurred en route where a driver's reaction to shock, smoke, burning smell, or fire could endanger the driver, passengers, and other vehicles/passengers on the road. Even if the vehicle is used without intentionally engaging the seat heating system, the design and location of the rocker switches allow them to easily be engaged inadvertently.

Driving south on i-5 at 9:30am sat morning. Light traffic. Overcast & 58 degrees f. Traveling in lane 3 (four lanes) with no vehicles in lane 4 next to me or ahead of me. No vehicle ahead of me in my lane either. We had just reached the apex of the seattle ship canal bridge. One adult guest riding in front . A sudden loud crunching/shattering sound & my driver's side window completely shattered to a translucent but non-transparent green color & within two seconds the heavy glass chunks began falling inward onto my body & some into back area. I thought i had been shot & didn't feel the pain yet, my heart raced, my guest exclaimed "my god what just happened?" & then she turned to check for traffic on right side to assist me in pulling over. Due to the light traffic i was able to quickly cross the other 2 lanes & exit on the roanoke exit to stop. My guest went around to the outside drivers side & said she could see no signs of anything amiss other than the shattered window. I was continuing to experience glass fall so i tried to pick & direct falling pieces to floorboard. Then i got all the visible pieces out of the frame & onto my floorboard. The car was drive-able & i did not cause a problem on the freeway so i began driving back toward my home on side streets. As i drove my friend called my husband who called acura of lynnwood & told them what happened. He ordered a new window for which they charged him $300.63 to order a new glass window (note: the service guy said he had never heard of something like this happening). Today, they put the new window & i paid $208.36 for labor. So total was $508.99 which is right at our insurance deductible so it becomes out of pocket expense for us. We are the original & only owners of this well cared for & garaged acura mdx therefore i'm disappointed that this failure wasn't just taken care of by the dealer or manufacturer. *tr

I have a 2001 acura mdx and in recent days have experienced a fluttering noise coming from the engine compartment at speeds around 30 mph with hesitation in acceleration. The problem has been diagnosed as a bad torque converter. I have done much research and have learned that this problem is alarmingly common and potentially life-threatening. No recalls have been implemented though the risks are severe and the high percentage of incidents certainly qualifies for a recall. Not much investigation is needed to determine that action should and must be taken for the safety of the consumer and for the responsibility of the manufacturer. *tr

I have a 2001 acura mdx and i experienced some safety issue on highway a few weeks ago. The transmission had skip/slip problem while i was driving uphill on i-680. All of a sudden, the car transmission couldn't switch gear and caused me almost crashed into another car. I did some research on the internet and found that all acura mdx 2001-2003 have transmission problem even they did recall. But, they didn't make the transmission functioning well after normal use. I contacted acura on 12/2/2010 and they told me that they are not liable to this situation. They don't care about public safety. Please invest this problems seriously. I hope that you can order acura to be responsible for this transmission defect and eventually save people's lives from potential accidents on the highway. *tr

We have a 2001 acura mdx which has developed a "speed bump" shudder at around 30 mph. The acura dealer didn't mention that this is a recurring problem as i found out at this link --- http://townhall-talk.Edmunds.Com/webx?14@@.F1775eb/461 --- there are many, many people on this forum discussing this same problem. It appears that this problem is widespread and common. Acura's way of fixing the issue was to give us 15% off of a new transmission which is not a very friendly way of fixing a problem which has apparently been in the car's dna since it was built. We then got a software update letter in november of this year from acura for this same problem for a 2005 mdx which we no longer own. One of the key lines in the letter is "this (fix) can help prevent your transmission from being damaged." wow --- will it take a failed transmission and the death of a family as with the toyota debacle to get them to act responsibly and do a voluntary recall on all mdxs??!!

Tranmission failure caused by plugged fluid cooler in radiator. Following occasional undiagnosed high transmission temperature fluid warnings when towing a trailer, car shifted unexpectedly into 2nd gear at highway speeds. Just prior, shifting had become slightly erratic, including sharp engagement above idle when pulling away. Erratic behavior was noticeable, but not disconcerting. Once the transmission started shifting into 2nd gear at highway speeds, the vehicle was slowed, and pulled off the highway briefly to cool. Upon restarting, erratic shifting continued. Trip completed by holding car in 2nd gear. Vehicle operated normally next morning driving to shop. Diagnosis was computer unable to determine what gear transmission was in. Shop performed complete transmission overhaul. Car then operated normally - until trailer towing again attempted. Trailer had been towed with indetical loading for some 6+ years without problems, including mountain passes in 3rd gear. Now when towing transmission overheated without warning in cold weather, including over-temperature light, & transmission fluid spraying out, wetting the underside of the car & exhaust system, creating smoke cloud. Repeated attempts to fix were unsuccessful until transmission shop finally found fluid cooler integral to the radiator plugged solid, allowing no fluid flow through that cooler or the factory-installed towing package cooler. Warning! If you have an older acura that experiences transmission fluid overheating, radiator replacement is likely needed. It is likely that the overheating hastened the failure of the transmission. The severe deceleration of the vehicle when downshifting on its own into 2nd gear at highway speed could easily have resulted in a serious accident. Transmission problems are common with this model of vehicle. I am surprised that honda has not done something about it. *tr

I took it to the acura dealer and during the first visit they ignored the problem and instead suggested replacing engine mounts. After that expansive repair i was still able to hear the grinding noise between 25-30 mile speeds. I took the car back to the dealer and today i found out that is the torque converter. I was told that it will cost me over $2000 . . . Highway robbery !!! This model had a recall on transmission in 2004 but the acura seems to be blind to all those claims about failing transmissions and potentially dangerous situations. The sound comes and goes unpredictably but seems to occur most in the 42-50mph range - without any dramatic rpm changes. Normally during shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, sometimes sound like loud drum brake vibration or shaking, scary and at 150,000 mile when i took it for tradein at buerkley acura mpls mn they admitted it has faulty tc but before that last 6-7 years i took it to white bear acura & so more dealers they completely denied it has any issue with tranny or tc, according to them the tech could not reproduce the noise/vibration, now they are saying just avoid driving in d4 to avoid the issue, im really felt like being cheated by fraud company with poor ethics! *tr

Beginning in the summer of 2009, i heard engine noises while driving around 35-45 mph that sounded like i was driving over the rumble strips at the side of the road. Over the months the sounds began to get louder and we took it in to carx, but they couldn't figure out what caused the noise. On 3-29-10 we took my 2001 mdx to acura. The mechanic asked me to drive it at 28 mph so that it was around 1500 rpms. It made the noise numerous times for him and he knew exactly what was wrong. He said it was the torque converter and it would need to be replaced. I've had my 2001 mdx for 3 yrs and it's not under warranty so we replaced the torque converter to a tune of $2,400. Am a second owner of 2001 acura mdx with 84,000 miles, owned since approx 35000 miles. While driving home the automatic transmission began to slip, causing higher than normal engine speed while up shifting. Down shifting while slowing to a stop caused sudden and severe engine braking and very rough shifting. This could have easily resulted in an accident. No prior issues noticed, and vehicle had major scheduled service in the past. Took to local independent service and was informed transmission was a total loss requiring replacement. Contacted acura client services, and took to dealer who will only cover 25% of repair. My cost would be nearly $4000. Transmission failure of 2001 acura mdx at 74k miles. Many, many (hundreds) complaints on-line with same issues (mdx and sister vehicle the honda pilot). Dealership pretends there is no issue with these cars yet it is documented all over the place. We need a recall, this is terrible. They also told us that since we didn't get it serviced at a dealership "we were looked badly upon" when making their "offer". We all want to sue them as this is supposed to be a quality vehicle and acura is not taking any responsibility. We cannot afford this. Also, some owners are on their 3rd transmission in these cars b/c it's the same faulty transmission that goes in. We don't feel safe nor do we feel like we can drive it much. Purchased 2001 acura in 2007 with 90k miles, right after purchase wife began to notice a "flutter" sound from the front of the vehicle. It sounded like you drove over very small speed bumps. After 2 different trips to 2 different dealers they reported they never heard anything. Gradually the sound became more and more pronounced to the extent i was worried that car would lock-up while driving as i have heard/read other have done resulting in a crash. I took again to the dealer recently and they reported the problem now as a common technical service bulletin. The tsb and dealer stated i need to replace the torque converter and pcm. The pcm or ecu is the computer module that controls the whole engine. If the torque converter failed or wore out, why does their tsb and acura service recommend replace the pcm/ecu? Could it be pcm/ecu is the root of all of these transmission problems and caused the torque converter to fail? $2600 after fighting for reduced parts and labor costs. My 2001 mdx has been having this issue for over 2 years. It happens only sometimes but usually when accelerating from 2nd to 3rd gear. It makes a shuddering sound and then the rpms go up and it will not accelerate. You have to then stop or slow down to make it go in a lower gear. Sometimes this will happen 2 to 4 times a drive and sometimes will go days without happening. Mechanic thought it to be transmission issue and said drive it until it stops. However...After reading hundreds of complaints online...It appears that individuals have fixed the tranny or torque converter only to have the problem soon reappear. I am hesitant to replace tranny/trans as i have 163,000 miles on it and do not want to replace these items if they won't fix the problem. Many, many complaints of the exact same thing all over the web. Honda should be made to address this issue and see what the problem is! I am the original owner ...Bought it new in 2000. We purchased a 2001 acura mdx, used, for our 18 year old son. Within 9 months, it began shifting poorly. Of course, with a young driver, he didn't know what was going on. Just by happenstance, we were taking it around for tires, oil change, etc. They pulled the tranny dipstick and said 'you're tranny's shot'. We had it towed back to the car lot service department, where they confirmed. Then, luckily, we were at just under 122,000 miles, which is where my extended warranty would have expired! It was replaced under that warranty, with my only having to come out of pocket just over $700.00, which i paid for betterment b/c i elected to get a brand new transmission, rather than a used one with almost as many miles on it as the original! I have looked and asked around and i am not able to confirm that there is, indeed, a recall on the tranny itself, just on the converter, which was not replaced in my circumstance. I contacted the dealership(acura of tempe) and they said this would not be covered under warranty. I also contacted my insurance company (ameriprise) and they said this would not be covered under comprehensive coverage and to them it appeared to be a manufacturing defect. I feel this defect is a manufacturing defect, and could have been a very serious hazard if left untreated. Acura should have paid for this repair. I would appreciate your suggestions / feedback: do you know of other complaints along the same lines? Note: i have 2 pictures of the gas tank showing the leaks that i can send you if you like. *tr

I purchased the 2001 acura mdx on 3/29/05 for $24,000.00 w/aprox.57,000 miles. The 1st incident was in 11/23/07 with 90,000 miles i felt vibration and metal grinding sound and the vehicle hesitated for a second the dealer stated the torque converter needed to be replaced,it was changed and it was still under warrenty. The 2nd incident was the same as the first except i was entering the highway, it was on 5/12/08 and the vehicle had 93,000 miles and the dealer stated once again the torque converter needed to be replaced,it was replaced and still under warrenty. The 3rd incident is the same as the other two with much louder squealing. Now 6/25/09 with 106,000 miles the dealer states again the torque converter needed to be replaced only this time i am not under warrenty. The dealer sales person and technician recommended that the transmission be replaced since this was the third time.I feel that this should have been fixed correctly the first time instead of putting band aids on it.Spoke directly with acura and they swear that one part has nothing to do with the other.I beg to differ and told them that i knew alot about cars and the automatic transmission will fail if the torque converter fails. They want to put another torque converter at my expense, this is not right and is a huge hazard to me and my family that includes 2 small children. I did a quick search online and found many people with the same issues on there 2001 acura mdx. Please help me, no one else seems to think this is defective product and a huge safety risk. *tr

My 2001 mdx transmission began hesitating when shifting (84.849 miles). I immediately parked the vehicle and then had it diagnosed by a local mechanic who followed the owners manual instructions and flushed the transmission. Modis scan for codes, none in memory. Transmission fluid was extremely black and full of small metal debris and fiber material. Flushed several times with same results. Called acura dealer to check warranties, etc. They advised that the ecu causes transmission failure and that it along with the transmission would need to be replaced, warranty expired. Ecu are known to short out and will cause new transmission to burn up if not replaced. Acura should have recalled the ecu long ago when they knew about the problem. The failure of this component could cause transmission failure resulting in a crash. *tr

I am writing to nhtsa to report a transmission lockup incidence on the highway of my 2001 acura mdx suv. On 1/23/2009, while i was driving at the highway at 60 mph, the car has abruptly stopped to low 30 mph and almost caused a catastrophic accident to my family. The car didn't have any warning light on the dashboard console prior to the failure. The car has 148,000 miles and it's in a good mechanical standing (with regular interval maintenance). Since then, i have done some research and found that this vehicle is known to produce such symptom. It's clear that the vehicle transmission has design issue at its beginning, and at high mileage, it might exacerbate more severely. Should nhtsa regulate acura to concern more for the safety of its customers? Action that acura can help could be as issues new errata bulletins or courteous accident preventive measurement to make its older(high mileage) car safe. I have tried to contact to acura but didn't think it has any use. For one thing that acura factory won't make its customer safe is to collect actual older high mileage failure transmission and investigate for preventive safety measurement. Acura showed no interest despite my effort in talking to them. I have driven cars with failure transmission, but have not experience one that locks up at high speed in highway. This type of failure symptom is totally not acceptable. Surprisingly, i was able to find report of many mdx transmission lockup cases on web. Should there be law to prevent high mileage unsafe mdx go ride on highway unless some safety inspection has been performed. And, this is for the safety of others. I am currently having the transmission replaced at my own expense. *tr

I purchased my 2001 acura mdx new. . . I have been the only driver. . .Around 100,000 miles i began to hear this gurgling noise coming from under the engine compartment. . . I took it to two acura dealers and one independent repair shop. . .All indicated that the torque converter was shot and that i had to replace the transmission at a cost of over $3,800 . . . Highway robbery . . . I have continued to drive the vehicle and besides the noise between 35 - 50 miles per hour, it continues to run good. . . I purchased my 2001 acura mdx in aug 2004 and the transmission recall had already been serviced per records on the acura owners website. Approximately 18 months ago i noticed the car sporadically behaving as if going over rumble strips on a road. I took it in for service however could not get the vehicle to replicate the event. In the fall of 07 again i took it to the same acura dealer and told them to check out the bizarre behavior. Again, to no avail. In feb 08 i took it in for the 120k mile service which included cleaning brakes, checking belts etc. I reminded them of the noise once again. They said the car was fine. Last week i took it in again after determining the rumble-strip noise was occurring between 25 & 35 mph. Initially i was told i needed a serpentine belt & when i rejected that notion, the diagnosis was that i needed a new transmission. I called corporate acura and spoke with 3 different people. The last representative read the report taken by the prior person and i had to correct my actual statements several times. When asked what action i wanted acura to take, i said that acura should absorb the cost since my car was involved in the transmission recall the "fix" was merely a "patch" as other cars had the same issue upon reaching the 100k mile + mark. My car has 125k. When corporate acura called me today, they said essentially they were not gong to bear the cost of any of the repairs that it was my responsibility. I have been a loyal acura owner to one dealer and was preparing to purchase yet another mdx. These cars cost a lot of money in the first place and there is no reason for them not to absorb the cost. In fact, their cost is way less than the consumer cost and they can write it off as customer good faith expense or something of the sort. *tr

This has been a recurring problem with these vehicles and alot of owners have been compensated in one fashion or another according to different threads i have read online. 2001 acura mdx vibrations lead to dealer/ manufacturer to focus on other components then the true issue. Were different finds stated to divert attention of know problems, to minimize financial and reputation? (lemon laws or poor design run around?) i'm not the primary driver and then when i drove it (my wife is the primary driver), same problems were felt and it only had dealer service since purchasing it in 2001. I investigated the noise myself on 7/15 /2007 and noticed the motor mounts were broke. How long were they like this, who knows, but a noticeable engine vibration is gone after i pointed this out to the dealer/ manufacturer and had it repaired. I asked for reimbursement for the motor mounts from the manufacturer since it is a documented problem. The manufacture, acura/ honda, would not reimburse due to the age and mileage. I paid for the replacement of the motor mounts. A vibration was occurring around 30 - 40 mph, dealers/ manufacturer state it was a egr valve not allowing transmission to shift smoothly, and it was due to running below grade gas. Premium has and was ran, yet the transmission was 1.5 quarts low of transmission fluid, where is it going? Is it heating up and pushing back through the egr valve in gaseous state and then cooling, clogging the intake, thence effecting the shifting? There is known issues with the transmissions and the dealer/ manufacturer should replace it and step up to the know issue. Lastly, the sway bar has been lose and i've been told it was the a/c compressor to a strut. I got under the vehicle and was able to identify it the first time. Is the manufacturer hiding know issues on these items stated above? *jb

My mdx shakes while driving not specific to acceleration, but periodically it will shake severely for a few seconds and stop with no intervention from me. I do not slow down or stop when this hard shaking occurs--course it's normal for me but my passengers are startled and concerned. This mdx has bee doing this for years. Dealer says i need a new transmission. Other repair facilities have investigated and tried repairs that did not resolve the problem. This mdx also "growls" there is a loud sound that is heard while driving that ends with the vehicle nearly stalling out but i continue to press on the accelerator and it has so far not stalled. I brought this to the attention of the dealer also during the inspection for severe shaking and i was told i needed a new transmission. This was 4 years ago and i am still driving the vehicle with these concerns. Since the original complaints of shaking and loud growling sounds i have had issues with the gear shifter. When i wanted to put the gear in drive it would not go. There was something preventing it from moving-locked maybe? I used the key release for the gear and put the car in neutral to start the engine and then into drive. This happens sporadically maybe a couple times a year so far. I have not had this issue investigated. I started to hear front end sounds almost immediately after the recall work was performed by the dealership. Since that dealership and i had a mutual disagreement that was distasteful enough to cause me not to return there i have tolerated the clunking sounds from my front end. Now that particular dealer is no longer in business (sold the franchise) i am bringing my vehicle back to the dealer for possible investigation of the front-end noise. *tr

2001 mdx transmission failed and was replaced with rebuilt transmission by dealer. This was after 4 visits over 9 months complaining about a shudder between 40 - 45 mph. Another repair shop (non-dealer) had diagnosed a faulty transmission on the first visit. Transmission fluid was burnt. Dealer refused to accept that diagnosis and replaced egr valve (had already been replaced once), 4th gear pressure switch, and one time claimed not to be able to reproduce the problem. Dealer denied knowledge of any history of transmission failures in this model, despite many documented cases which i discovered after the transmission failed. In retrospect, the car was obviously dangerous to drive the entire period from the first occurrence till the replacement. Acura cs has refused any sort of good will reimbursement, partial or otherwise, due to the fact that all service was not exclusively done at a dealer. I purchased a '01 acura mdx as a pre-owned vehicle on october 23, 2003. The car ran great except for the occasional recall. The first recall was done at 35,000 miles for the front springs and then at 39,000 miles for the transmission overheating issue. On march 17,2006 i was traveling down the highway when i completely lost all power to my vehicle and have to swerve off the road to avoid getting hit. I was quite scared. After pulling off to the side of the road i got out of my vehicle to see if there was anything wrong externally and there wasn't, but i noticed that the check engine light had come on. I immediately brought it into my dealer and had then check the car over. They stated that the check engine light indicated a total transmission failure. They told me that this type of thing was common in these cars and that the recall was supposed to fix the issue. Apparently it hasn't. At 77,000 miles my transmission failed and acura wants nothing to do with it. Their headquarters have stated that the two problems, the recall and my transmission issue are unrelated. After doing a consider amount of research on the internet i've noticed these cars are known for transmission issues and that a total transmission failure can result because the recall was not done properly or because the recall didn't catch the problem in early enough. My problem is that the car was driven 40,000 miles before the recall was done and during that time some damage had to have been done to the transmission to warrant this transmission. My question to you is, where do i go from here?? Acura wants nothing to do with the car because they know it is a major safety defect in there vehicles. In the least they could have provided me with a rebuilt transmission, but they denied even that request. They should be stopped!!*jb

Dt: the contact owns a 2001 acura mdx. While driving at 25 mph the transmission seized and caused other vehicles to swerve to avoid the consumers vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an acura dealership and they confirm ed that the transmission seized. The contact told the dealership to inspect the transmission to see what the repair should be, and an explanation as to why this happened. The dealership told him that they could not give an explanation as to why this happened. However, they could send the transmission to acura for inspection. The vehicle was regularly maintained, and had 149,000 miles on it. The vehicle was traded to the dealership a couple of weeks ago for another vehicle, but the contact assumed that the transmission was replaced. Spoke with the service manager and he could not give an explanation, but mentioned that there was a recall in april or may 2004 , and during a scheduled maintenance they did a diagnostic test. Therefore, it did not need recall repairs. Also, there was a variable torque converter management system, and in the owner's manual it explained, that if using the variable torque converter management system it could cause rear differential damage. The contact felt that this was a safety issue. Transmission seized on august 16, 2005. The contact contacted acura service hotline, and they agreed to pay 25% of the cost. Ak *jb

I own a 2001 mdx (first year release) and we love it! The reason for my complaint is that when having routine service today at my acura dealer (leith acura in cary, nc), they noticed that one of the alloy wheels has a crack that appears to run across the back of one 'pillar' of the wheel and toward the front facing on both sides of that spoke or pilar. I've never had such a problem with any alloy wheel in 35 years of car ownership and wouldn't expect it particularly with a luxury vehicle such as the acura mdx. The dealer would not offer any assistance other than to sell me a new wheel. I want to know if acura will warranty the wheel, as this appears to be a real anomaly. There is no indication of impact to the wheel which might have caused the damage. Please advise.

I had just picked up our acura mdx that morning after getting a maintenance check-up completed. Later that day after picking up my son the check engine light turned on and for some reason the light that illuminates around the gear the car is driving in was blinking. It seemed like the car was going haywire. After all that, the car suddenly starts to surge and is having a difficult time accelerating. I called the dealership and was told to bring it over immediatly. Each time the car was at a stop the car would not accelerate properly even if i had pushed down on the gas pedal all the way. The car barely made it half way up the drive way and i ended up just leaving it right there. The mdx has cut-off while driving about 5-8 mph, about 4-5 times now. The mdx has had a history of stalling and all indicator lights turning on while driving. Before the transmission failed, the mdx has had the egr valve replaced due to another stall after the engine was running for sometime already. The mdx did have a jet kit installed at 76,847 miles, but after 16,248 miles the transmission failed and replaced and i got billed for it. I believe that the transmission should have been replaced in addition to the jet kit and should be covered by acura since they put out a defective transmission.

I was driving in a center lane about 45 mph in my 2001 acura mdx when the front wheels locked up and the car went into a skid and came to a complete stop. Within seconds, the lady behind me ran into me causing damage to the front of her vehicle and the rear of my car. Neither of our airbags went off. The other women said her knee was hurting, but she did not request any medical attention at the scene of the accident. There were no other injuries. There was no warning, no strange noises, no jerky actions - the front wheels just stopped. The car was taken to the local honda dealer and acura was contacted. The transmission had broken and acura arranged to have the vehicle transported to the closest dealership which was oklahoma city. The dealership replaced the transmission (and the front wheels after i inquired about a flat spot because of the skid) and transported the vehicle back to amarillo to have the body work done. The second row of passenger seats is split whereby the end seat folds down and slides forward for entry to the rear row of seats. We have a six month old baby who rides in a car seat which is attached to the center of the second row of seats. She rides in the car seat facing rear, and she can stick her arms out on either side. When went to exit the vehicle, our older son slid the second seat forward, and it hit her out stretched arm, bending it backwards. She screamed and we immediately removed her from the seat. She appeared to be fine, but i am concerned for the future. There would be no danger to a passenger facing forward because the worse thing that could happen is the right arm would be bumped forward. Dear nhtsa: we have had our 2001 acura mdx in (apple acura in york, pa) for the recall involving the automatic transmission. We knew something was wrong before the recall notice because the mdx would hesitate and almost stall at low speed at gear changes. Our mdx is still under factory warranty (4 year- 50,000 miles). *ak the recall (apple acura in york, pa) service included a test drive, inspection, and installation of a oil recirculation pump. This recall work was completed but the transmission hesitation has persisted. I have had this vehicle in three times to find the problem (apple acura in york, pa). The first they changed the transmission oil (my request) and did not find anything wrong. The second time was the recall service. The third they cleaned the egr valve and ports. The problem still persists. I feel this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed. The problem only occurs at low speeds under light throttle response. This hesitation does not happen at half or full throttle. I was told by the service manager that this flaw may be part of the vehicle design that was fixed on the 2004 model year. I asked if our mdx transmission can be fixed like the 2004 design? He was not confident that he would have authorization to do this work. I just do not feel that the problem will be addressed. Should i go to another dealership? Do they have to demonstrate that they fixed the problem under the recall? How do i formally put in a complaint? Summary: the jack supplied with my 2001 acura mdx slipped while i was changing a tire in my driveway, causing the car to fall on my right arm as i was mounting the spare tire. I received a crush injury across my right elbow, which is useable now but still sore 2 months later. Whys: i almost did not report this because i was stupid and forgot to set the emergency brake. I am reporting this because my brother-in-law in dallas, who owns a 2001 accura mdx, had a similar thing happen to him (without injury) a few months earlier when his emergency brake was set; he had not mentioned it to me until he heard about my accident. I would love to be the last person that an mdx falls on. Both my brother-in-law and i had decided to change our own tires as we had flats in our driveways (both of us have changed many flats in the past, although it had been several years since i had done so), were in a safe, level, and dry place, and had no need to wait an hour for roadside assistance. I think many people would make the same choice in that situation, or, more hazardously, along a roadside (where the road's crown makes the ground uneven, and where passing traffic will shake a car). My brother-in-law's 2001 mdx shifted (even with the emergency brake on) and bent the jack, but did not fall all the way off of it. He called roadside assistance. When the r.A. Man arrived to help, he looked at the jack and said that it was way too small for a car as heavy as an mdx. My jack also bent. Although my emergency brake was off, the car did not roll or shift when my neighbor came over with a larger jack to re-raise my car and install the passenger tire for me. (at that point we didn't realize it was not set). I was negligent, but my brother-in-law was not; this jack may be dangerous when supporting this car. Will you please follow up on this? *ak

My 5 1/2 year old son was belted in the driver's side middle row seat of my acura mdx year 2001 which has 3 rows of seats. Next to his right shoulder is the shoulder strap of the middle seat which is connected to a mechanism in the seat and extends to the roof of the car. As it turns out, despite previous warnings, he was playing with that middle shoulder strap and inadvertantly it looped around his neck, retracted and began to hang and strangle him. He called out to me while i was driving in a crying, raspy voice. I immediately stopped the car and looked back. I am an emergency physician, and what i saw was my son being lifted off the seat, being held down by his seat while his head was being pulled away. His face was red and he could hardly breath and his breathing was getting more labored. I jumped in the back seat and tried to pull the shoulder strap down to give hime some slack, but it was locked. He must have pulled in out all the way prior to the seat belt retracting, and it was locked. I had to release his belt and hold him up with my hand. I could not place my finger between the belt and his neck because it was too tight, and there was no way to unwrap the belt. I looked down at the locking mechanism. There is a way of unlocking the middle seat belt and retracting it all the way into the roof for storage, in my panic i could ot identify it. I called outside to people in their cars parked at a stop light for a knife. No one had a knife. I went back and thought again and remembered that a key was required to unlactch this mechanism. I took my key out of the ignition, and found a small rectangular hole along the side of the buckle mechanism, placed my key into it and released the belt. I was able to then unwrap the belt from this neck and save his life. If i hand not previously been aware of this mechanism, he would have hung/strangled to death. I look forward to your comments. It seems to me there should be an easier way of unlocking that belt.
