The affected filters are marked with a date code a61451 through a72571 sequentially. The date code and part number appear on the filter housing. Fram racing hp4 and hp8 oil filters not bearing a date code in this range are not affected by this recall. The gasket of the oil filter becomes more pliable under high temperatures and pressures.

• Recall 51786 [USA]: If one cable fractures, the remaining cable may retain the tailgate in a horizontal position. if both cables fracture, the tailgate would drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. if anyone is sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured, they could fall and be injured. on vehicles without a bumper, the tailgate may drop to a lower position.
  Certain pickup trucks have galvanized-braided-steel tailgate support cables used to support the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position. Over time these cables can corrode and fracture when loads are applied to them.

  Aftermarket pickup truck over-the-rail bedliners manufactured for installation on 1999-2004 chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra pickup trucks. The toggle wing assembly used to attach the bedliner to the truck bed is not engaging fully in the stake pocket of the pickup truck.

• Recall 5948 [USA]: During braking, the pedal will be lower than normal and stopping distances will be longer. if this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.
  Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Some of these vehicles have a clearance condition between the front right-hand brake pipe and the body cross sill that could decrease to the point of allowing contact during the life of the vehicle. If contact occurs and the brake pipe becomes damaged, in half of the brake system there can be a loss of brake fluid and pressure. The brake warning lamp will be activated when the brake fluid level reaches the indicator limit.
  dealers will inspect the front right-hand brake pipe for wear. If there are signs of wear, this section of the brake pipe will be replaced with a new designed brake pipe section. If there are not signs of wear on the brake pipe, the dealer will install a spacer clip to ensure sufficient clearance between the brake pipe and the body cross sill.

• Recall 6336 [USA]: This contact with the wheel rim could, in time, cause the brake hose to become worn to the point that brake fluid leakage could occur. if this occurred, loss of front brakes is possible.
  This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Vehicle description: 1/2 ton light duty pickup trucks. On certain trucks, failure to follow the service procedure set forth in the service manual for removal of the front brake caliper can result in movement of the front brake hose relative to its knuckle mounting bracket. If this movement results in increased length between the bracket and the banjo fitting that attaches to the brake caliper, it is possible for the brake hose to come in contact with the wheel rim.

• Recall 10969 [USA]: If this condition is ignored, the steering gear to frame can wear and/or fatigue the attaching bolts to the point of breakage or the bolts backing out. if all the bolts break or back out, the steering gear would separate from the frame resulting in a loss of steering control.
  Vehicle description: extended cab 4-wheel drive pickup trucks. Some of these vehicles have a lower than specified torque on all three of the steering gear to frame attachment bolts. The bolts can loosen over time allowing the steering gear to move. This loosening can result in some unresponsive steering feel and some noise to the driver.

  On certain vehicles, the galvanized-braided-steel tailgate support cables used to support the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position can corrode over time and fracture when loads are applied to them. Tailgate support cable corrosion may not be visible because of the plastic sheathing covering the cable. If one cable fractured, the remaining cable may retain the tailgate in a horizontal position. If the remaining cable was weakened by corrosion, it could fracture within moments of the first cable fracture. If both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop approximately 10 degrees and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. If anyone is sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fracture, they could fall and be injured. On vehicles without a rear bumper, the tailgate may drop to a lower position. Correction: dealers will replace the existing galvanized support cables with stainless steel support cables.

  On january 11, 2011, odi opened ea11-001 to investigate allegations of premature brake line corrosion failure in model year (my) 1999 through 2003 general motors (gm) full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles sold or registered in the following region of the united states that nhtsa has viewed as salt states for investigations of corrosion related issues:connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin.The subject vehicles represent the first five mys of gms gmt800 platform production, of which approximately 2,038,504 vehicles were sold in salt states (the subject vehicles).The gmt800 platform includes the following vehicles:1999-2007 chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 series pick-up trucks; 2000-2006 chevrolet suburban, chevrolet tahoe and gmc yukon sport utility vehicles; and 2002-2006 cadillac escalade and chevrolet avalanche sport-utility vehicles.General motors produced a total of approximately 10,427,062 gmt800 vehicles for sales in the united states, including almost 5 million that were sold in salt states.Although there are over 60 different brake pipe routing configuration used in gmt800 vehicles, with the exception of the rear crossover pipes in my 200x-2007 vehicles that changed from rear disc to drum brakes, all of the vehicles use brake pipes from the same supplier with a common double-wall, brazed steel pipe design with a combination of hot dip zinc-aluminum corrosion protection coating and aluminum paint outer layer known in the industry as algal (astm-b750). Odi analysis of field data regarding gmt800 vehicles identified a total of 3,645 complaints of brake pipe corrosion failures, including 107 alleging crashes, and 40 injuries.Though only 20% of total gmt800 production, due to age and region the subject vehicles account for a disproportionate share of the failure experience; with 2,702 of the complaints (75%), 88 of the crashes (82%) and 20 of the injuries (50%) reported in those vehicles.Analysis of the complaints showed strong correlations to vehicle age and region.For vehicles with less than 8 years of service, the complaint rates were minimal for all regions.In the salt states the failure rates begin to climb as the vehicles advance in age, particularly in the northeast corner of the united states.The complaint rates in the salt states go from less than 0.1 incident per thousand vehicles (iptv) at 7 years in service to over 1.0 iptv after the 12th year of service for the subject pickup trucks and utility vehicles.Most of the failures reported to odi occurred in vehicles with more than 10 years in service.Odi?S investigation did not identify any specific defect conditions that were causing or contributing to the brake pipe failures.Nor did the analysis isolate the problem to any subject vehicle sub-populations when analyzed by vehicle type or production range.The investigation found that vehicles experiencing brake pipe corrosion failures were likely to have general patterns of excessive corrosion on the majority of the brake pipe assembly and appear to be occurring due to expected wear out for the brake pipe coating material used in the subject vehicles and the environmental conditions in severe corrosion states.A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.The agency will monitor t

  General motors is conducting a safety recall to remove and replace the tailgate support cables installed in 805,368 model year 1999 and 2000 gmt 800 model vehicles.The model year 1999 and 2000 gmt-800 series vehicles that will be campaigned had contributed a significant majority of the total complaints (87%) and injuries (79%) associated with the tailgate support cable breakage in the model year 1998 - 2000 c/k series vehicles addressed by this investigation.

  Odi is upgrading rq04-010 and opening an engineering analysis to further investigate the tailgate support cables installed in 1998, 1999, and partial year 2000 silverados and sierras (c/k models).General motors is conducting recall campaign 04v-129 to replace the tailgate support cables originally installed in certain model year 2000 - 2004 sierras and silverados.General motors has advised odi that the materials used for the tailgate cable sheathing installed in c/k models had inadvertently changed in october 1999, increasing the propensity for voids in and around the galvanized steel cable strands which can allow moisture to wick among the strands, leading to oxidation and weakening of the strands.Since odi initiated rq04-010 in september 2004, odi has received 10 additonal non-injury complaints on my 1998-99 c/k vehicles, but no additional injury complaints.During this same period, gm has received 564 non-injury and 35 injury complaints. Odi has received 6 injury complaints and 38 non-injury complaints from owners of model year 2000 c/k vehicles and requires further investigation to determine whether these incidents occurred in vehicles within the scope of campaign 04v-129 or should be added to the injury summary for rq04-010.

• Parking brake failure investigation # EA04011

  In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.According to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.Gms action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.Dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. A total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.These included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.Odi is aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.Though the conditions described in gms letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.This engineering analysis is closed. • Parking brake failure investigation # PE03057

  Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.These vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.Complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake systems torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.Gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.Effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.This part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.Gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. Odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

• Tailgate cable breakage investigation # PE03049

  During the pe, odidiscovered that one or both of the tailgate support cables can break due to the effects of metal fatigue at the point where the cable flexes when the lift gate is opened and closed. Concurrently, the strength of the cable degrades over time due to corrosion of the wire strands in the support cables.When the vehicle is stationary and cargo is being loaded or unloaded, the tailgate can tip downward displacing cargo and/or people to the ground without warning.Odi is also aware of one total separation of the tailgate from the vehicle.Owners cannot easily detect whether the support cabes are damaged or corroded because they are covered by a protective sheath.Odi is upgrading this preliminary evaluation for further appropriate action.Model year 2003 vehicles will be added to the investigation.Further, we will incude additional vehicles, those being the avalanche and cadillac ext, model years 2002-2003, and the sierra, model years 1999-2003.

I went to have an oil change and when the garage went to lift the truck the frame buckled. There was so much rust damage that the frame was soft in numerous places. The 1999 silverado z71 1500 truck is an lt with only 104,000 miles. It has been garaged since i purchased it new. It looks and runs great! The brake lines rusted out 10 years ago and i replaced with stainless steel lines.

Brake lines have rusted through. First the rear brake line burst. A few months later a front line burst. Both times vehicle was in motion.

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 800 (1500). While the contact was pulling into a parking spot, the anti-lock brakes seized abruptly and the vehicle almost struck a tree. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the contact did not remember being notified. The failure was similar to the symptoms listed in the recall. The contact called the manufacturer and a case number was provided. No further assistance was offered. Jeff barnes chevrolet (6110 sykesville rd, eldersburg, md 21784, (410) 970-6363) made an appointment for the recall repair promptly. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The failure mileage was 150,000.

In addition, the driver and passenger side plastic rollers were fractured and caused the seats to move. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. While the vehicle was parked, the contact attempted to accelerate and lost the ability to steer the vehicle. The bolts that held the gear box to the frame had been sheared off. The dealer (cooper chevrolet buick, 1300 s quintard ave, anniston, al 36201, (256) 405-4155) stated that the bolts looked like they were torqued too tightly. The dealer and manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 230,000. *tt updated 12/07/18*jb

Passlock system engages without cause. When starting my truck, it acts like it will and then shuts down after a second, and then the security light comes on. This is common with past lock system errors. This happens about 1 out of 4 starts. To get the car started, i have to go through a reset process that takes over 30 min, which causes battery drain. This has left myself and family members stranded in unsafe situations several times. Most recently i was stuck on the side of the highway, after stopping to change a flat at 11pm. After not starting with these same symtoms, while trying to do the 30min. Relearn process, the battery did not have enough to start the truck. So i was then stuck there for 3 more hours waiting on a tow truck for a jump. I was stranded for over 3 1/2 hours. This issue has been happening for the last 2 years, and have spent about 4k dollars to try and fix it.

The vehicle was taken to the local independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission components in first gear were shattered and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Also, brake fluid was leaking from the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the brake lines were rusted and corroded. The brake lines were replaced and the failure was remedied. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact attempted to open the hood, but the latch failed to release the hood. Also, flames were seen underneath the hood. The contact believed the fire originated from the fuse box, which burned the engine wire harness. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. A police report was filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not destroyed. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was unknown.
