Known Recall Investigations
  • Motorcycle stalling investigation # PE07040

Early production ducati 1098 model motorcycles are subject to engine stalling, typically when the engine is operating in the upper limit of its acceptable temperature range and when the operator rolls off the throttle to the idle position. Odi was aware of numerous instances where this has occurred (though only two owners have formally submitted reports to us) and that ducati has undertaken an ecu exchange program to address the issue.Subsequently, after opening this pe, ducati elected to conduct a safety recall to correct the issue on the subject motorcycles.Since the recall addresses odis concerns, odi has dropped its request for information sent august 16, 2007.

The gas tank on my 2007, ducati 1098 motorcycle cannot be secured to the bracket located on the frame of the motorcycle. The gas tank on this model motorcycle is made of plastic and expands due to the ethanol in the fuel. This makes the motorcycle unsafe to ride. I contacted ducati north america to try and get the tank replaced and was informed extended warranty on tank replacements were limited to 72 months from date of purchase and my motorcycle was purchased 82 months ago. The limits were set by the courts after a class action lawsuit. I was never informed of this time limit by ducati or the courts. Now i have to purchase a replacement and the tank is over $2000. Isn't there something that can be done to hold ducati responsible for the replacement of the tank? A recall? Thank you. *tr

My plastic fuel tank is unsafe. I am the original owner and operator of a 2007 ducati 1098s tricolore superbike. All required maintenance services have been performed by a factory authorized ducati dealer. I was shocked that ducati north america has placed the safety of their customers at risk by using cost-cutting methods to authorize the manufacture of an unsafe and defective plastic fuel tank. The shock continues as ducati north america has failed to step up and offer the replacement of a safe oem metal fuel tank to resolve the associated safety problems, cosmetic troubles, and overall resale value of these very valuable and collectible motorcycles. Ducati north america has utilized metal fuel tanks on both prior and subsequent superbike models. I have already had my plastic fuel tank replaced once under factory warranty. (1) i am asking ducati north america to have a factory authorized dealership replace my 2007 ducati 1098s tricolore superbike plastic fuel tank with an oem aluminum replacement fuel tank (oem part number: 969a06907b) shown on page 36 of the 2011 ducati performance accessories catalog and on page 24 of the 2012 ducati performance accessories catalog. (2) i am asking ducati north america to have a factory authorized dealership repaint my oem aluminum replacement fuel tank to original specifications with the factory-correct color scheme and associated factory-correct decals. (3) i am asking ducati north america to have a factory authorized dealership install my newly painted factory-correct oem aluminum replacement fuel tank with all factory-correct fuel lines and fuel related components. (4) i am asking that there will be no cost to me for any of the above actions. (5) i am asking that a factory recall be issued for all ducati motorcycles that are affected by this well-known and well-documented problem. *tr

On most ducati motorcycles with a plastic fuel tank, the tank has been known and does indeed deform. It is said to affect motorcycles built as far back as they have used a plastic tank. It is said it is because of the ethanol in fuel sold here in the states, but now it is starting to happen in europe as well. The tank swells and deforms until it no longer will seat or seal properly causing a serious health and safety risk. My own motorcycle, a ducati 1098 made in 2007 is also in this group. Currently, ducati says they will replace the affected tanks, but they are replacing them with the same tank, so it will continue to happen. In addition i have been waiting nearly 2 months with no word from ducati about this. *tr

On ducati motorcycle, model year 2007, model multistrada 1100s, fuel tank deformation (expansion) causing tank to lock in place (unable to remove from motorcycle to perform periodic maintenance) or alternatively expand while off motorcycle while performing engine maintenance and causing inability for the fuel tank to be reinstalled. Problem appears epidemic among these model motorcycles. Possibility of rupture or fuel leaks post deformation exists, manufacturer's replacement tanks are made of the same material as the original, thus perpetuating the hazard. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ducati 1098s tricolor. Almost everytime the contact accelerates from a stop, the motorcycle stalls. He must restart the engine for the vehicle to properly accelerate. The most recent failure occurred while riding 5 mph. The failure has not caused any crashes, but a few close calls have occurred from vehicles almost rear ending him due to not taking off at lights. The contact is also very concerned about an engine oil leakage. The engine oil was sucked into the airbox through the breather of the vehicle. There was so much oil in the engine that it began to leak out of the airbox, directly beneath the vehicle. This caused a dangerous situation for when the vehicle attempted to accelerate. The vehicle is also experiencing brake rotor failure. The brake rotors were rubbing against the brake discs, which caused a loud grinding noise and wore out the brake pads. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on numerous occasions, but the only repair that was performed was the cleaning of the airbox. The dealer cleaned out all of the oil, but the leak continued. The airbox was refilled with oil. The contact called the dealer to obtain recall information and was informed that none were available for his vehicle. Through online research, he discovered three recalls on the same model vehicle. He also learned that numerous people were experiencing the same failures, in which some led to death. The contact stated that he is experiencing other failures that have not been recalled, but should be recalled. The recall numbers were unknown. The failure mileage was 20 and current mileage was 1,200. Updated 06/25/08 *bf
