• Recall 124481 [USA]: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

• Recall 68478 [USA]: A missing or incorrectly installed rivet could compromise the ability of the steering column to support the occupant loads in the event of a frontal crash, decreasing the effectiveness of the frontal impact safety system. as a result, the condition may increase the potential for injury in a frontal crash.

• Desiccated air bag inflator rupture investigation # EA21002

  From 2000 through 2017, takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("psan") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004l. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 blomquist report at www.Nhtsa.Gov/sites/nhtsa.Gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.Pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in us vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004l that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All takata inflators produced with propellant 2004l contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated psan inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- takata (now known as tk global), the independent testing coalition, and exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of takata desiccated psan inflators using propellant 2004l (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004l is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004l.The office of defects investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated psan frontal inflators manufactured by takata. This investigation will require extensive information on takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated psan inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.Gov/recalls?Nhtsaid=ea21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). • Engine stall, fuel delivery failure investigation # PE12032

  In a letter dated april 3, 2013, chrysler group llc submitted a defect information report (dir) to nhtsa identifying a safety defect in the fuel delivery system in approximately 20,532 model year (my) 2012 jeep patriot (11,624) and compass (8,908) vehicles manufactured from october 18, 2011 through may 7, 2012 and equipped with certain fuel tanks produced between october 18, 2011 and january 26, 2012 (recall 13v-120).According to chrysler, jeep patriot and compass vehicles equipped with saddle type fuel tanks built during the affected period may experience low siphoning rate through the transfer tube from the secondary to the primary side of the fuel tank.Chryslers investigation determined that a material change by the transfer tube supplier (ti automotive) led to malformed tubes being shipped to the final tank assembly supplier (kautex).The malformed transfer tubes may make the siphoning process more difficult to start and maintain under certain operating conditions.Sustained driving during this condition may deplete fuel in the primary side of the fuel tank and lead to engine stall without warning.Kautex established a 100% sort on january 26, 2012 as a countermeasure for the malformed tubes being used in production.Chrysler is able to trace fuel tank build dates by vehicle identification number and recall 13v-120 only includes vehicles equipped withsaddle tanks made during the affected period.Approximately 97 percent of the recalled patriot vehicles (11,277 out of 11,624) were from october 18, 2011 through january 26, 2012.Chrysler determined that a few suspect tanks were used on vehicles produced as late as may 7, 2012 and is including any such vehicles in the recall.The office of defects investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by chrysler as well as complaints submitted to odi from consumers to identify stalling incidents related to fuel delivery.Odis analysis identified a total of 64 engine stall incidents related to fuel delivery, all of which involved patriot 4x4 vehicles equipped with saddle type fuel tanks.The patriot 4x4 vehicles account for a little over half of the subject vehicle population (59,783 vehicles).Forty-nine (49) of the incidents involved the approximately 11,277 patriot 4x4 vehicles that were built from october 18, 2011 and january 26, 2012 and equipped with tanks from the period associated with the transfer tube material change.This equates to a complaint rate of 434.5 incidents per 100,000 vehicles sold.Fifteen (15) fuel delivery related engine stalls were identified in the remaining 48,506 patriot 4x4 vehicles, resulting in a complaint rate of 30.9 incidents per 100,000 vehicles.The rate in the non-recalled patriot 4x4 vehicles increases to 68.0 incidents per 100,000 vehicles if stalls with no-restart and unknown cause are added to the analysis.The patriot front-wheel drive vehicles are equipped with single reservoir fuel tanks and are not affected by the saddle-tank fuel delivery issue.Owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified to take their vehicle to a jeep dealer, who will replace the fuel tank transfer tube to prevent any incidents related to this issue. Chrysler will begin notifying dealers and owners in may 2013. The front subframe rusted through on the left hand side which in turn caused the lower control arm to shift outward preventing full steering capabilities. There was a warranty extension dated back from 2017, brought into service on december of 2019, to the chrysler dealership where it was purchased for lights on the cluster and a steering vibration and no one mentioned the subframe issue that was persisting on this model year. Was told rather that it needed a new bearing and a speed sensor. Replaced both and the issue wasn’t fixed. I am told now (july 2021) that this extension expired in march of this same year. Was told by both the dealer and the customer service hotline that there is absolutely nothing they can do. They also mentioned that there should have been a letter sent out for this warranty extension but nothing was ever received. Been at the same address since well before the purchase date of this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2011 jeep patriot. The contact stated while getting the vehicle inspected, she was informed that the front and rear cross member had holes due to rust. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 11v315000 (steering). The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not eligible for the free repair. The failure mileage was approximately 131,641.

Front and rear crossmembers have significant rust/corrosion. Fiat chrysler tsb 23-007-17 rev. B provides 10 year warranty extension for cross-members on 2008-2012 jeep patriot vehicles in rust belt states (including maryland and dc, but excluding virginia). My wife's 2011 jeep patriot has significant front and rear crossmember rust, and for most of it's life was parked in arlington, va, 2 miles from the washington dc border. Fca says that our vehicle is not covered by the tsb extended crossmember warranty. I contacted fca customer care to request that they apply this extended warranty coverage to our vehicle, based on the close proximity to rust belt states (~2 miles), existence of significant rust on both cross members, and the vehicle clearly being within the affected model years covered by the tsb. Fca documented my complaint in case number 79657231, but advised that there is no process for me as an owner to request that the extended crossmember warranty be applied to our vehicle. Basically, nobody at chrysler is even going to consider my request. I am reporting this to nhtsa because i believe the tsb that fca issued fails to remediate safety concerns on all affected vehicles. Their unwillingness to even review my request demonstrates they are not at all concerned about customer or vehicle safety. They should be forced to fix this safety issue on all impacted vehicles.

Bought vehicle from ray price dealer 2 years ago with 81k miles vehicle passed inspection with them(was already inspected upon purchase) was clearly told by salesman that vehicle didn't need to have warranty. Should raised a red flag being i purchase it cash for 10k. Began to notice a clunk sound..Took it to my mechanic figuring it was just brakes and or rotors. He called me immediately and said the entire frame was rusted out. And good thing i made it to him and further driving i would have been in a severe accident. He told me to take it to the autobody shop. Upon inspection they found the entire subframe completely corroded. $2000 in repairs( not covered under any warranty) 3 weeks without car. Subframe and control arms had to be replaced
