• Recall 250679 [USA]: Insufficient air volume can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
  Paccar incorporated (paccar) is recalling certain 2009-2021 kenworth c500, 2014-2015 kenworth t440, 2009-2015 kenworth t660, 2015-2024 kenworth t680, 2009-2024 kenworth t800, 2013-2023 kenworth t880, 2016 kenworth t470, and 2009-2019 kenworth w900 vehicles. The air tanks have an insufficient volume of air for the brake system. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard number 121, "air brake systems."

In the event that the anti-lock brake system (abs) loses battery and/or ignition power to the controller, the dash warning light for the abs may not illuminate to warn the driver of the loss of abs. The display that indicates which transmission gear the driver selected may display incorrectly. The display can indicate 'n' when the shifter is set into 'd' or 'r', and the as a result, the truck will not move.   Issue: on certain trucks, the warning light for the tractor anti-lock brake system (abs) may not turn on if the system loses power. If this happens, the driver will not get warning that the abs is not working properly. Note: this problem would also cause the traction control (tc) and electronic stability control (esc) lights not to turn on. Safety risk: if a driver is not warned that the abs is not working properly, there could be an increased risk of a crash. Corrective actions: paccar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to update the software for the cab control module (cecu).

  On certain trucks, the intermediate side marker lamp/turn signals do not comply with the requirements of canada motor vehicle safety standard (cmvss) 108 - lighting system and retroreflective devices.   On certain trucks built with a cummins x15 or isx15 engine equipped with nylon fuel lines and a banjo bolt on the fuel pump, a blockage in the fuel cooling system may cause a fuel line to burst. This could result in a significant fuel leak onto the roadway, which would create a road hazard for other motorists. Additionally, this condition could also cause an engine stall without warning, without the ability to restart the engine. Both of these conditions may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: cummins-authorized dealers will replace the affected nylon line with a steel line.

  Certain vehicles equipped with eaton ultrashift plus or eaton advantage automatic transmissions with right hand stalk shifters may not comply with the requirements of canada motor vehicle safety standards (cmvss) 101 - location and identification of controls and displays and cmvss 102 – transmission control functions. Under certain conditions, the d-r-n (drive-reverse-neutral) display in the instrument cluster may incorrectly illuminate the "n" on the display when the transmission shifter is in the "d" or "r" position, which is contrary to the requirements of the standards.   Certain vehicles equipped with neway adz tridem rear suspension may not comply with the brake timing requirements of canada motor vehicle safety standard (cmvss) 121 - air brake systems. The brake control airline between the two relay valves is plumbed with a 3/8" airline but should be plumbed with a 1/4" line to balance the service brake application timing and meet the requirement of the standard. An oversized airline could cause a delay in brake activation and increase stopping distances, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will update and modify the brake piping of the air brake system.

  On certain vehicles, the engine control module (ecm) may develop an internal electrical short circuit that could blow a fuse in the ecm's electrical supply circuit. This could cause the engine to stall without warning and prevent the vehicle from being restarted. Engine stalling without warning would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Turn signals fail to continue to flash even after selected. Dash indicator light will rapid flash but nothing outside the tractor or the trailers will illuminate. Tractor has been back to dealer several times. They "reflash" the truck cab control computer but that has never yet fixed the problem. The dealer mechanics and techs simply shrug and say it is a "kenworth thing" and they don't know what to do next. The company i work for has two of these tractors with serial numbers only one number apart and both tractors have the identical problem. It is an intermittent problem and sometimes the tractor will run several days and never fail to illuminate the turn signal lights and then it will suddenly fail again. Usually the turn signals flash a few times and then begin the rapid flash sequence and stop working. I have had several close calls with surrounding motorist not understanding that i still intend to begin or complete a turn but they get confused because the turn signals stop working. Sometimes selecting the opposite direction will get them working again. Sometimes pressing the brake pedal to illuminate the brake lights (if not already pressed) will get them flashing again. Vehicle can be in motion or stationary, pulling one trailer or two (i usually pull doubles or two trailers). I have spoken with several other t880 kenworth drivers from other companies and they too have noticed the problem. Dealer is michigan kenworth grand rapids mi. The problem has been going on for over 3 years and 219000 miles. I have written it up on our dvir forms and it has yet to be corrected. Our shop doesn't know how to fix an intermittent problem like this. Of course it never fails in the shop during a routine service.
