  • Recall 2020148 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
Issue: on certain trucks, the warning light for the tractor anti-lock brake system (abs) may not turn on if the system loses power. If this happens, the driver will not get warning that the abs is not working properly. Note: this problem would also cause the traction control (tc) and electronic stability control (esc) lights not to turn on. Safety risk: if a driver is not warned that the abs is not working properly, there could be an increased risk of a crash. Corrective actions: paccar will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to update the software for the cab control module (cecu).

  • Recall 2020090 [Canada]: Electrical
Issue: on certain trucks, the battery cables to the jump-start terminal may be too long. As a result, the cables could contact and chafe against the left-front suspension leaf spring. If this happens, a short circuit could occur and cause the positive cable to overheat or melt. Note: this recall only affects trucks with a left-hand under-hood battery jumper terminal. Safety risk: an overheated or melted battery cable could create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer for an inspection of the jump-start terminal cables. If the cables are too long, they will be replaced.

  • Recall 2018527 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain trucks built with a cummins x15 or isx15 engine equipped with nylon fuel lines and a banjo bolt on the fuel pump, a blockage in the fuel cooling system may cause a fuel line to burst. This could result in a significant fuel leak onto the roadway, which would create a road hazard for other motorists. Additionally, this condition could also cause an engine stall without warning, without the ability to restart the engine. Both of these conditions may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: cummins-authorized dealers will replace the affected nylon line with a steel line.

  • Recall 2018389 [Canada]: Brakes
Certain vehicles may fail to conform to the requirements of canada motor vehicle safety standard (cmvss) 121 - air brake systems and cmvss 136 - electronic stability control systems for heavy vehicles. In the event that the anti-lock brake system (abs) loses battery and/or ignition power to the controller, the abs indicator lamp may not illuminate to warn the driver of the loss of abs, which is contrary to the requirements of the standards. This could result in the loss of abs function with no warning to the driver, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will reprogram the cab control module.

  • Recall 2018077 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
Certain vehicles equipped with eaton ultrashift plus or eaton advantage automatic transmissions with right hand stalk shifters may not comply with the requirements of canada motor vehicle safety standards (cmvss) 101 - location and identification of controls and displays and cmvss 102 – transmission control functions. Under certain conditions, the d-r-n (drive-reverse-neutral) display in the instrument cluster may incorrectly illuminate the "n" on the display when the transmission shifter is in the "d" or "r" position, which is contrary to the requirements of the standards. This could create confusion to the operator, which could increase the risk of injury and/or property damage. Correction: dealers will update the transmission software.

  • Recall 2017374 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles, the polyfuse for the spotlight could develop a short circuit in the cabin fuse box. A short circuit could result in overheating and melting of the fuse box, and could increase the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will replace the optional polyfuse switch in the spotlight circuit with a standard fuse.

  • Recall 2017361 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain vehicles equipped with cummins isx 15 engines and certain fuel pumps, the drive gear on the fuel pump may spin loose on the drive shaft. This could result in a loss of pumping function, which could result in an engine stall without warning and not being able to be restarted, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: cummins-authorized dealers will replace the fuel pump.

  • Recall 2017093 [Canada]: Fuel supply
On certain vehicles equipped with 2017 emissions engines, a tee fitting in the fuel supply was improperly manufactured and could leak fuel. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will inspect and replace affected fittings as necessary.

  • Recall 2016482 [Canada]: Structure
On a certain vehicle, the mounting bracket for the trailer to tractor air hoses and electric connector may create a tripping hazard. The bracket protrudes upward from the left hand side of the deckplate from the top step, which a person could trip over and could cause them to fall, increasing the risk of injury. Correction: dealers will relocate the trailer air and electric connections from the left hand rail to the right hand rail.

  • Recall 2016289 [Canada]: Engine
On certain vehicles, the engine control module (ecm) may develop an internal electrical short circuit that could blow a fuse in the ecm's electrical supply circuit. This could cause the engine to stall without warning and prevent the vehicle from being restarted. Engine stalling without warning would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the ecm.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Quarter fender failures investigation as of 20200921

The office of defects investigation (odi) is opening this preliminary evaluation (pe) on model year (my) 2017 - 2019 peterbilt and kenworth vehicles equipped with quarter fenders. Odi has received reports with allegations of quarter fender failures resulting in road debris or collateral damage to the subject vehicle. Peterbilt and kenworth vehicles are highly customizable, with several options for fenders.Quarter fenders are approximately two feet by two feet square and can be made of either plastic or metal.N some events the plastic fenders have fractured leaving only the mounting tube. The separated pieces of plastic or metal fenders pose a safety risk to both the subject vehicle and other motorists and pedestrians who may be struck by the separated fender.Odi is aware of one (1) consumer complaint alleging multiple separations. One such separation reportedly damaged the air brake system. Odi is aware of additional fleet reports of quarter fender failures.During complainant interviews, odi learned that the alleged defect in the plastic fenders may be limited to a specific production period. Fleet interviews indicated that only factory equipment fenders fractured, and replacements performed better.A preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the frequency and severity of this failure mechanism and understand the conditions that might influence this failure on the subject vehicles. The odi report cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid using complaint identification number 11349017.

  • Intermittent loss of power steering assist investigation as of 20200501

On may 1, 2020, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe20006 to investigate complaints of intermittent loss of power steering assist in daimler truck north america (dtna), volvo trucks of north america (volvo) and paccar vehicles equipped with a zf/trw (trw) thp60 steering gear.  the investigation focused on 2010-2020 dtna freightliner cascadia, m2 and wst; volvo vn, vah and vhd and paccar 337, 365, 389, 567, 579 model vehicles.Field reports and interviews with fleet drivers allege that high power steering fluid temperatures could result in internal seal and bearing failures causing pressure fluctuation, affecting left and right-hand turns.  the inability of the driver to steer the vehicle as intended can increase the risk of a crash and injury. Odi analyzed data provided by trw, dtna, volvo, and paccar in response to individual information request letters.Odi found that most failures occurred within the first two years and/or 50,000 miles of service.  the claim rate decreased with time and miles in service and remained less than 0.5%. Odi normalized data from each of the manufacturers and determined that there was not a substantial difference in the failures.Additionally, trw improved a seal in the steering gear in december 2015.Trucks built on or after 2016 (as 2017 and newer model years) show a decreasing trend of failures. In view of the overall low failure rate, the nature of early-life failure, and failure rate trending downward for model years 2017 and newer, this preliminary evaluation (pe) is closed.  the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the odi reports cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.
