P0418

Secondary Air Injection System Relay "A" Circuit Malfunction

DTC P0418, sometimes indicated as P041800 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the auxiliary emissions system causing secondary air injection system relay "a" circuit malfunction.

The most common cause of this DTC is a bad relay. The relay can be tested with a voltmeter. The relay should have 12 volts on one side of the coil and ground on the other side of the coil. If there is no voltage on the coil, the relay is bad.

2014 TOYOTA TACOMA with 66000.0 miles

Air injection pump and air switching valve assembly. Vehicle generated an obd code of P0418 and P2441. Vehicle only has 66k miles. Vehicle is unable to accelerate to normal driving speeds, very sluggish. Cost to repair is $2k. This is the same problem on 2012 Toyota Tacoma and experienced on 2013 - 2015 being reported. This is dangerous to drive!
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

2013 TOYOTA TUNDRA with 58000 miles

On two different occasions i was driving my Tundra on the freeway at approx. 70 mph. My truck lost power and i almost caused accidents on both instances since i could not accelerate past 40 mph. I had to manage my way out of the freeway to a safe place. 2two diagnostics were performed and i received codes P0418, P1604, C1241, P2445, P2441. I was told by the Toyota dealership that there was a problem with a faulty secondary air injection system pump and other components related to the system and i was provided a repair cost of over $3,000 dollars. I was later informed, and i discovered through research, that Toyota had installed faulty/defective air pumps in thousands of Tundras 2013's like the one that i own. I reached out to corporate office but they stated that my vin number somehow did not "qualify" as one of the affected pickups. My Tundra only has 60k miles and i use it to commute from and to work basically. I perform routine maintenance. There is obviously a problem with a defective secondary air pump system that Toyota refuses to fix. My truck is a liability on the road and this is my only means of transportation. It looses power and the check engine light activates. Toyota recalled thousands of vehicles like mine and fixed them after they acknowledged that they had placed faulty air pump systems. My truck is a potential possible cause for an accident since it unpredictably looses power on the freeway. I have not received a solution from headquarters/corporate office to repair my truck at no price since it is affected by their faulty pumps. They did offer $750 dollars towards the cost of parts, meaning that i have to come out with over $2000k out of pocket. I need Toyota to take responsibility and fix my truck.

2012 TOYOTA TUNDRA with 87992.0 miles

On 4/5/16, i started my 2012 Tundra to go to work. Engine light comes and stays on. Called local dealer and took the truck in. 5 hours of diagnostic testing reveals code P0418 (secondary air intake system) issue on my 2012 Tundra. Cost of repairs, $2048.00. After some research into this code P0418, i find that it is a reoccurring problem for Tundras, tacomas and sequoias dating back to 2000 - 2010. Repair costs of up to $4,000. Supposed to be resolved in 2011 + models. Not so. If this is not corrected, the truck could go into limp mode, restricting power and depending on where this occurs, could lead to a dangerous situation. No way preventative maintenance will help identify this issue. I called Toyota customer service and they (Toyota) were willing to pay for half of my repairs, which i appreciate. However, they knew this was a problem dating back to 2000, made attempt to correct and still an issue. Seems like this should be investigated further based on the fact that this continues to plague owners.

Check engine light went on. Got a code P0418-vehicle will go limp/not able to go over 25mps. Toyota has a warranty repair program in place for all 2012 Tundras with a 5.7 size but not mine because it is a 4.6 even though it is the exact same problem!!!

2012 TOYOTA TUNDRA with 92500.0 miles

I see several other complaints here with my exact problem. The secondary air injection system relay and secondary air injection system switching valve. Obd ii codes P0418 and P2442. My experience is the same as other complaints in that my truck is now permanently in limp mode and cannot be driven due to these known defective parts. On pre-2012 model Tundras Toyota has extended the repair warranty to 10 years/150,000 miles as this is a widespread problem. For some reason they will not include later year model trucks like my 2012 4.6 liter. This is a safety issue as the truck slowed severely in traffic and will not accelerate or go up any hill. Cars behind me in traffic had to swerve around me. I was stuck dead at the bottom of a hill as these chronically failing parts shut down the vehicle's power. Toyota customer care has denied my attempt to seek compensation or repair of these parts that they know are defective. The fix needs to be extended to all year model and engine size Tundras as these defective parts exist on models past 2011. A side note, somehow these defects are reported to be affecting the vehicle skid control as that warning light comes on when these parts fail on most of the affected Tundras.

2011 TOYOTA TUNDRA with 91260.0 miles

My 2011 Toyota Tundra while it was being driven the engine light came on. It was driven to a nearby o' reilly's for a code check. The code was P0418 which is the air induction pump which is an emission's code. The truck then went into a limp mode while driving home on a busy city street which meant it would not accelerate over 35 mph. This is a very dangerous situation not having the ability to go any faster due to an emission's code putting the truck into a limp mode. After researching this problem i found out that Toyota has extended the warranty for this air injection pump for the 2007-2010 Tundra models. Toyota has refused to help cover the cost for this repair even though it is a known problem on Tundras. I read that the same faulty air pump which allows moisture to enter is still being used in my 2011 Tundra model. This is a $2,200 repair which Toyota should cover since it has occurred to their earlier models and mine as well. Not only is this a costly repair, but also a very dangerous situation when your vehicle is unable to accelerate on an emissions problem.

2007 TOYOTA TUNDRA with 51000.0 miles

Service engine light came on while driving under 30mph. Engine no longer starts correctly. Only 51,000 miles. Air pump assembly and air switching valves error code. (P0418) known defunct parts for 2007 Tundras which Toyota extended warranty to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Warranty not sufficient length for this model year for low mileage vehicles. Could not have had properly fixed until check engine light comes on. However, parts fail at 50k+ miles. Please extend warranty to appropriate length for this issue. Numerous similar instances noted upon internet research.

Had codes check and it turns out i have the dreaded secondary air injection system (emissions) defect P0412, P0418 ,P1440/P1443, P1441/P1444, P2440, P2445, P1442/P1145 , which is a recurring problem. Replacement is a nightmare for self repair or a $2000+ repair.

2005 TOYOTA 4RUNNER with 146000. miles

Stationary on startup - my 2005 Toyota has been rendered worthless because of a factory defect in the blower fan that only runs when cold starting the engine. It triggers the "limp home" mode in the vehicle which overrides transmission shifting and makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. The error code for this problem is P0418 secondary air injection system relay. This is a well-known problem and has occurred in many, many of the Toyota 4.7 l engines in different vehicles. Toyota is aware of this defect in this/these part(s). This could not be predicted or prevented by servicing the vehicle at regular intervals, or any other method of typical consumer maintenance. The price for repair is in the $3-thousand dollar range. This was not a consumer neglect item. Toyota has a part in their engine that is defective, and they know that. I do not have that kind of money for this vehicle, so i use a computer to reset the code until this gets resolved, or the vehicle completely shuts down.
