  • Recall 2015612 [Canada]: Accessories
On certain buses equipped with a ricon s-series wheelchair lift, the platform could potentially crack due to bent knuckle link arms and/or defective bearing. Overtime, the platform could separate of the rear portion of the pivot plate making the lift inoperable and putting the lift operator at risk of injury. Correction: owners will need to make an appointment with the local ricon dealer to have the lift inspected and repaired.

  • Recall 2014489 [Canada]: Accessories
On certain buses equipped with a ricon wheelchair lift, the lift platform sides may crack, which could cause the lift to lean against the vehicle door(s) and potentially fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, putting the lift operator at risk of injury. Correction: dealers will inspect lift platforms for cracks and repair as necessary, and install a repair kit.

  • Recall 2013124 [Canada]: Label
Certain buses fail to conform to the requirements of cmvss 217 – bus window retention, release and emergency exits. Specifically, push-out windows and other emergency exits may only be identified using unilingual text, instead of using text in both official languages. In the event of an emergency, this could hamper passenger efforts to quickly exit the vehicle, which could increase the risk of personal injuries. Correction: dealers will install updated labels.

  • Recall 2012328 [Canada]: Engine
On certain buses equipped with an i-6 engine, the high pressure engine oil line (between the cylinder head and the high pressure pump) may fail. This would cause an engine oil leak, which could result in sudden engine shut down. Lost vehicle propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road condition, and the driver’s reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. In addition, oil may contact a hot engine or exhaust component, which could result in a fire. Correction: dealers will replace the high pressure engine oil line.

  • Recall 2011305 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain buses equipped with a maxxforce 7 engine, the positive alternator cable may rub against the engine control module mounting bracket. Continued contact could wear through the alternator cable's insulation, which could cause an electrical short circuit. An electrical short could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: dealers will inspect the alternator cable for signs of abrasion damage and install tie straps to route the cable away from the engine control module mounting bracket.

  • Recall 2010078 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain vehicles, the parking brake may release if the brake system's electronic control unit misinterprets signals generated from turning the ignition key more than once at a specific rate. The release of the parking brake may cause a sudden, unexpected shift in vehicle position, resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will reprogram brake system electronic control unit.

  • Recall 2010202 [Canada]: Powertrain
On certain vehicles equipped with an international® vt365 engine, the engine calibration normally responds to a failed open accelerator position sensor circuit fault by returning the engine to low idle speed of 800 rpm and disabling the driver's ability to increase the engine speed. However, if the open circuit condition corrects itself within 30 seconds of its initiation the engine calibration misinterprets this event by going into a "limp home mode" where the engine speed is increased from low idle speed to the high idle speed of 1200 rpm. This increase to high idle speed may occur without warning causing a sudden and unexpected shift in vehicle position possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will install an updated engine calibration.

  • Recall 2009038 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain buses, the heater blower motor located in the entrance door stepwell heater unit as well as the rear wall-mounted heater unit may fail. This could result in elevated temperatures that could ignite nearby combustible materials. A vehicle fire could cause property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs

  • Recall 2008068 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, the engine oil cooler base plate may crack, allowing pressurized oil to leak into the engine compartment. This may cause engine shut down without warning, and a risk of fire, which could result in property damage, personal injury, or death. Correction: dealers will replace the engine oil cooler.

  • Recall 2008266 [Canada]: Electrical
Certain buses may exhibit engine hard start, no start, or stall conditions due to possibly damaged terminals in the fuse holder connector of the injector drive module (idm) clean battery power circuit. These terminals may have been damaged during electrical continuity testing done during the manufacturing process. Loss of vehicle propulsion, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

  • Recall 2006124 [Canada]: Brakes
On certain buses, the park brake system may activate while the vehicle is under normal operation. Although the vehicle is brought to a stop in a safe, controlled manner, the activation may occur without warning or input from the driver and may strand the vehicle in an active traffic lane. A stranded vehicle may contribute to a vehicle crash, possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury, or death. Additionally, the spring applied, hydraulic release (sahr) park brake actuator could experience a hydraulic lock condition that will not allow the park brake to apply. A vehicle roll away can occur and may result in a vehicle crash, possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

  • Recall 2005399 [Canada]: Other
On certain buses, the door control bracket for the door control arm does not meet the requirements for door entrance and handrail design. Failure to meet the specification can result in passenger coat strings or carry-on items getting caught as the passenger exits the bus, which could result in personal injury or death. Correction: dealers will affect repairs.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Front leaf spring breakage investigation as of 20080917

Odi opened this investigation in september 2008, based on 18 warranty claims of fractured front leaf springs. At 2008 year-end, international truck and engine (ite) has advised odi that an additional 11 warranty claims have been reported to date (total 29).Odi s investigation has determined that a manufacturing flaw exists in an indeterminate number of the 1600 front leaf springs manufactured between july and august, 2007 by its supplier, hendrickson, usa, llc.Investigation has determined that fractured springs have been detected solely by visual or audible indications such as vehicle sag or tilt and/or front end vehicle noise.Evidence indicates that there is no significant effect on vehicle control if and when the lower leaf of the two leaf front spring assembly fractures in the suspect vehicles since the intact upper leaf spring continues to provide adequate load bearing support and front axle alignment for the vehicle. There are no reports of loss of control and no crashes. Therefore, this investigation is closed.A safety related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources is not currently warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists. The agency reserves the right to take further action on the vehicles if warranted by the circumstances. Odi will continue to monitor field reports and take appropriate action if indicated.

  • School bus stalling investigation as of 20080509

This pe was opened after odi became aware of 7 events on school buses where the fuse for the ecmoverheated and burned the fuse holder and/or fuse holder terminals.Once overheating of the fuse holder occurs, the fuse blades would no longerbe secured in the plastic holder, thus interrupting the electrical flow. The complaints centered aroundeither a no-start, hard start, erratic engine performance or engine stalling. Odi was also aware of reported battery box fires. Thepe was opened to examine the safety significance and gain a technical understanding of this problem. After discussions with odi and further review of field incidents, ic decided the proper way to handle this issue was to conduct a safety recall during which they willreplace the fuse holders and the power electrical connector on the affected vehicles. This recall action resolves the issues raised by this investigation. Therefore, this investigation is closed.

  • Dash/interior fire investigation as of 20070710

Based on the data provided by international and further review of the alleged fires, a safety related defect trend has not been identified at this time. A review of the warranty data provided no additional claims that describe step-well heater blower thermal events. No warranty claims indicate fires or additional property damage to the bus.Similarly, a review of 64 applicable dealer reports found no reference to smoke, fire, or burned components.Other than the three fire claims mentioned in this pe, international has not identifiedany other reports of fire relating to the alleged defect for the 23,000 subject buses. With regard to the three fires identified, international was only able to determine that the origin of the two elgin fleet fires occurred in the area of the step-well heater around the blower motor area. The origin of the st. Paul fire was not in the area of the step-well heater, rather, based on the burn patterns of this unit, the fire originated to the left of the step-well heater.International plans to continue to monitor field reports and warranty claims related to the step-well heater and the front electrical system. No field action of any kind is planned at this time. However international is continuing the investigation with regard to the elgin buses to try to understand the root cause of those two incidents.A safety related defect trendhas not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources is not currently warranted. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists. The agency will continue to monitor reports and take the appropriate action ifwarranted by the circumstances.

2007 international ce school bus #19: meritor/wabco brake systems. The driver of this bus was approaching a stop sign. According to the driver's estimates, he was going 15 mph when the brakes suddenly locked up tight. The driver then called in stating the brakes were locked up and that he was unable to release the parking brake. The first thing we did was transfer those kids onto another bus that happened to be driving by. Assuming this was the same problem the other ce busses have had with the parking brakes, we went out and cut the short cable to get the vehicle out of the busy intersection. I cut the cable while my assistant mechanic jumped in the bus to pull it away. While attempting to pull away, he was about halfway into the intersection when the brakes again locked up without him touching the brake pedal. The short cable was cut, so this meant the service brake system was causing this to happen. We slowly drove the bus about 500 feet to get it off the road and parked it. In that 500 or so feet, the brakes locked up 5-6 more times. I called up a tow truck company and had them haul it to the dealership. They were unable to duplicate the problem. To make a very long story short, meritor said the lack of a trouble code in the service brake or park brake system indicates that the problem was probably (they're not sure) due to a corroded tone ring on a rear rotor. Due to the corrosion, the computer did not pick up a wheel speed reading. This activated the traction control system which applied brake pressure to the opposite wheel (which is what locked up the brakes) in an attempt to apply torque to the wheel that wasn't getting a wheel speed reading. Their suggestion was to replace the rotors (at my cost) to the performance friction brand with the anti-corrosion tone ring. We have dealt with corroded rotors before. It's a very common problem. The question is, what happens to the next bus when the brakes apply unexpectedly with vehicles behind it? *tr
