NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 82776 [USA]: This does not meet the standard requirements.
Gulf states toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 110, "tire selection and rims." these vehicles were sold between september 1, 2005 and june 2, 2008 without the requisite load carrying capacity modification labels.
dealers will mail to consumers the corrected label or the customer will have the option for dealers to install the label free of charge. Dealers will also correct the owner's manual. The safety recall began on may 27, 2010. Owners may contact gulf states toyota at 713-580-3300.
owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.Safercar.Gov .

  • Recall 46518 [USA]: If the side impact seat-bolster and curtain side airbags inadvertently deploy, they could cause personal injury if an occupant is seated on the same side of the vehicle as the door that is closed with a high rate of force. until the repair has been performed, it is recommended that a minimal force/speed be used to close the driver and passenger doors or closing the doors after 90 seconds have elapsed from turning the ignition key from the "on" to the "off" position.
On certain vehicles, the side impact seat-bolster and curtain side airbags may inadvertently deploy. This condition can occur if the door for that side of the vehicle is closed with a high rate of force while the vehicle's ignition is in the "on" position or within 90 seconds of turning the ignition key from the "on" position to the "off" position.
dealers will replace the two side impact airbag sensors and install a urethane pad in the front doors, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on november 6, 2006. Owners may contact toyota at 1-866-548-1851.
toyota recall no. Ssc 60h.Customers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.Safercar.Gov.

  • Recall 50001 [USA]: This may increase the risk of injury to the occupant in the involved seating position in the event of a crash.
On certain vehicles, due to improper assembly of the air bag inflator, which is used in the side air bag, the curtain shield air bag, and the knee air bag assembly, some inflators were produced with an insufficient amount of the heating agents necessary for proper air bag deployment. In this condition, the expansion force of the gas may be insufficient to properly inflate the air bag when the srs system is activated during a crash.
dealers will replace the specific srs air bag. The recall began on april 6, 2006. Owners may contact toyota at 1-888-270-9371, scion at 1-866-548-1851, or lexus at 1-800-255-3987.

  • Recall 60540 [USA]: Pieces of the wind deflector glass may separate from the frame and fall upon the vehicle occupants causing driver distraction and/or injury.
On certain passenger vehicles equipped with a glass wind deflector, the deflector, if impacted by a projectile, such as road debris, while driving with the wind deflector in the upward-tilted position at highways speeds, may shatter and separate from the frame.
dealers will install a protective laminate to the wind deflector to prevent pieces of glass from separating from the wind deflector frame. The recall began october 27, 2005. Owners may contact toyota at 1-866-707-2466.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Glass moonroof shatters investigation as of 20060707

Odis investigation discloses that the subject vehicles sustain moonroof shattering and/or damage at rates comparable to those for most other similarly equipped vehicles. This review also discloses that such incidents occur in most vehicles with moonroofs and that while tempered glass panels commonly used in moonroof fabrication are shatter-resistant, some catastrophic failures do in fact occur.Impact with small stones or road debris may result in immediate or delayed shatter incidents, depending on the extent and nature of damage sustained by the glass moonroof panel. The manufacturer concludes that incidents of moonroof shatter are random occurrences that result primarily from impact with small stones or other objects while the vehicle is in motion. A safety-related defect trend has not been identified and this pe has been closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety defect does not exist. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

  • Sun/moon roof wind deflector breakage investigation as of 20050826

The manufacturer notified nhtsa by letter dated october 17, 2005, that a safety recall has been initiated.Nhtsa has assigned no.05v-483 to the recall. The corrective action will consist of installing a plastic film to the inside surface of the wind deflector glass. The corrective action will be performed on approximately 71,400 my 2005 and 2006 scion tc vehicles manufactured during the period of march 12, 2004 through july 21, 2005. Based on this action, the subject ea has been closed.

Glass roof shattered unprovoked

I purchased a red 2005 scion tc for my daughter in february, 2019 from toyota auto nation in davie, fl. They had it priced in good condition, so i expected to get some use out of it. I paid almost $6,000. Month later it overheated on the highway (595) and my daughter had to pull over late at night on the highway and i had to have it towed to my home. Very scary and unsafe situation for a teen. Had it towed back to their service station and it turned out to be a problem, that cost me $600. I find it hard to believe that this company would not have seen any damage under the hood. Shame on them for selling me a car that broke down in one month. I have called them and they will not help with the payment. It is 'as is' i called and text the sales girl and never received a call back or response. Finally put a bad review on their website and received an e-mail to contact manager to help with the situation, only to find out that was an automated email and again told 'too bad'. It is now july and yet again it broke down on my daughter as she was at the gas station. It would not start up after she turned it off. Tried to jump it and nothing. Once again headed to go to the dealership service station. At first was told it was only the battery, so i say go ahead, i will pay the $140 and replace it and we will go from there. Only to get another callback from the manager stating that there is more wrong with the car, that after the $89 five point check on the vehicle and replacing the battery that it still did not start. They would have to keep it over the weekend. It is costing me an arm and a leg and i need help with this. I feel like they lied about this vehicle and allowed a car that is not safe to be bought at their business. I am concerned for my child's safety and only want what is fair.

While driving on the interstate 8/5/17, at approx. 70-75 mph, the rear moon roof exploded in my daughters car! There was a loud explosion like the car had been shot at. She was able to keep control of the car and then after looking around at all the side windows, the passenger noticed that the moon roof had exploded. After pulling over they removed as much loose glass as possible so it would not to blow off and cause damage to others or an accident. The glass was blown outward and looked like a volcano that had erupted. She did not take any pictures at the time due to shock and disbelief. Parents took photos once car was back in st. Louis in their garage. She had to drive from indianapolis to st. Louis with the car dropping pieces of glass onto and into the car . Also fearful the other roof might explode. After speaking with toyota they said it happens sometimes. Heat, pressure build up, or rocks can cause it. Heat could not have been a factor as the temps that day were approx. 68 to low 70's. The liner covering the moon roof was open. This situation could have been so much worse. An explosion like that at 70+ mph could have caused a wreck not to mention injuries.

When i returned to my car that had been parked for approximately three hours, i found that the deflector was raised and the sunroof was entirely shattered. The "legs" of the deflector appeared to have broken through the glass, as the sunroof was severely cracked and broken along each of its four edges. I had not used the sunroof prior to parking my car that morning. Upon reading similar complaints, i do recall also having heard an extremely loud pop while driving, but the sunroof did not shatter until some time after while the car was parked. *tr

I do not understand why toyota knows that there is a defect in their engines on these cars but they would not recall them. They recalled the camry with the same engine but not the scion tc. They redesigned the engine in 2007 to fix the defect. The known defect is the head bolts were too short, causing them undue stress and eventually stripping out the bolt holes for the heads. This causes the car to overheat blow the engines. This is a safety issue as many people have had this happen in the middle of the road and at intersections where the car dies. People can be rear ended and broad sided because of this. Toyota knew about the defect because they fixed recalled the camry which had the same engine. This is no small fix. For most owners this out of pocket expense is between $3000 - $6000 dollars depending on how much damage was caused by the over heating. There are complaints all over the internet of this happening but no one in the government is doing anything to push toyota into fixing their known screw up. *tr

I was driving back from work going around 60 mph on the highway, and heard loud bang like a gunshot. First i thought that one of my tires has hit on something and exploded but then i felt something falling from the roof and i managed to pull over right away. When i got out of the car i saw my moon roof shattered in pieces. There wasn't any debrief on the road or any small rocks that could've hit the roof and shattered it. The bang was very loud and very disturbing and i hope this can be investigated and prevented in the future. *tr

While driving down the road at about 10-15 mph (going very slowly because it was a dirt road), i heard an extremely loud pop which sounded like a gunshot. Immediately stopping to inspect, i discovered that the moonroof had shattered completely. The webbing of the broken glass was more clearly visible from the inside than the outside. There was absolutely no sign of any impact. No other cars were around anywhere and nothing that could have hit the glass. As i continued to drive home, the pieces began to fall into the back passenger seat and finally the whole thing started to fall inside. I called a local toyota dealership and they told me a glass replacement would be $1158.00. I had previously noticed that in my daily driving, whenever the car structure flexed in any way (as in on uneven terrain and sometimes even on highway or interstate driving), i would occasionally hear popping sounds as if there was some type of strain on the frame. I suspect some type of manufacturer defect, especially since i see that other people have experienced the same type problem with the moonroof or sunroof exploding without cause. On a different note, the rear hatch lift keeps falling off. In calling toyota to complain about the moonroof issue, i was informed that they did issue a warranty enhancement for the hatch lift. I had received no information in the mail about the enhancement, but the representative said it must be because the vehicle was still registered under the previous owner in their system. Don't know how that happened since we purchased from a dealership and have the title. *tr

I love my scion however i bought brand new from expressway toyota in dorchester ma in 2005 and with all the recalls i see on here i've only done one, and that the glass windshield. Every other time i go the dealer and tell them that there are recalls, they ignore me and say that there isn't . I have some rattling noise going on under my car...I fixed once at the dealer and it came back again but now the dealer wants me to pay again to fix it and i think it's a safety concern in the car, the tires are also uneven, i keep having to change tires too often, the hatch lift in the back keeps breaking...Major failing and cheap. It feels like it was glued on. I would an answer from the dealer where i bought the car as to why they keep denying my visits on the recalls and why in being charge the same safety work that i've paid once to get fix and now the same rattling noise keeps coming. I never get any information in the mail from my dealer either informing me of these recalls. I guess they are refusing to fix them. *tr

Back hatch door handle garnish just came off the vehicles rear hatch handle has a design flaw which makes the part fail. The rear hatch handle is fastened to the trunk/hatch with plastic clips. When the release button for the hatch is pressed, it only unlocks the hatch door. It does not spring upward like other vehicles. In the manual it shows to hold the release button and lift with the hatch handle. Because there are no springs to help lift it applies lots of pressure to the clips which weaken them. Eventually, they just snap. They are also known for snapping when the hatch is locked, in cold weather, and there are even reports of the release button melting. Replacement costs for this particular piece from the dealer is $170 for the handle and upward $200+ for labor. This price does not guarantee a permanent fix. This is the cost for the same faulty part. Because scion owners are aware of this, many have resorted to their own means of fixing which is where the safety issues arise. Scion calls this part an exterior garnish which implies it is for decorative purposes only and is not covered by warranty, but it is not just for looking at. This piece is a housing compartment for some vital components. Because scion knows about this, they should be held liable for putting their consumers at risk. Sign the petition to recall scion defective rear hatch handles and improve our safety. . It is very strange when i called toyota they claim there are no recalls for airbags which i see in fact there is by this website. They also state that the airbags would not deploy in this type of accident , with her hitting the pole direct and the car being totaled because of the damage how can they say this? I've been pulled countless times here in texas and most troopers inform me that it "is a safety hazard and unsafe". I was driving approximately 65 mph on a highway during a somewhat cold, wet evening when all of the sudden my sunroof shattered. At the time i was not using my sunroof and it was completely closed. Unfortunately my sun shade was not closed and as a result i experienced a shower of glass while driving on the highway surrounded by moderate traffic. This could have caused a major accident! The noise that came from the sunroof was similar to a small handgun going off in my car and for a minute or so i thought someone had taken a shot at me. After searching throughout my car for evidence of any type of road debris that might have caused this i could find none. As i was driving down the highway i accelerated to pass and it seemed as if my throttle shorted out. My car's rpm's dropped and i started to decrease speed. I removed my foot from the accelerator and it seemed to catch again, but as i pushed the pedal again my accelerator went out for a second time. At this point and my engine shut down. I shifted into neutral and tried to restart my car multiple times while rolling with no success. I had to try to maneuver my car through traffic with no power, rolling at a speed of about 40 miles per hour and decreasing rapidly while on the highway with a speed limit of 65. After i made my way over two lanes to the shoulder i tried to restart my car and it would catch and then turn off. I waited a few minutes and tried again, it started as if nothing had happened and i continued on. I could not take my car to the shop but planned to take it the next monday. On my way home on a sunday evening i was driving on one of the busiest streets in arlington, tx and the car started to shut down on me again. I pulled over and turned the vehicle off and waited a few minutes as i have done before and headed home. As i was driving again the car's throttle went out completely and i could do nothing except roll down the street. As i pushed the throttle my car would not exceed 2,000 rpm's and the max speed was 25 mph. I made it to a safe spot after rolling for about 2 miles at 12-20 mph on a 45 mph road. I had to wait until monday before i could have someone tow it away. The salesman and i did the research on the scion tc and assured me before purchasing the car, that acceleration was not a problem. I was concerned due to the problems toyota was having however i did not see any recalls or major problems except airbags, windows, and the sunroof recalls. I was expecting a great car, with great safety features and durability but issues with a throttle body going out while on the highway is a major concern that needs to be investigated. *tr

The trunk hatch handle of my 2005 scion tc broke off one day when opening the trunk hatch. The trunk handle is needed in opening the trunk. It has an electronic button release that must be pressed at the same time that the trunk is lifted. The handle broke off the car without warning and with only normal use. Upon inspection of the part i and several mechanics (including toyota technicians) determined that the part is flimsy and of poor design. Toyota technicians also admit that this is a common failure. It is a part used to raise the whole trunk hatch and is mounted to the car with weak plastic. I have searched online forums and have seen many people have experienced the same failure. Although since most had their hatch handle break in the first 3 years (covered under warranty), the problem has not been specifically addressed. It is a problem for those of us that have failures outside of the warranty period because the part has not been officially determined to be defective. I have had the part replaced at my local dealership. I have tried to get the toyota distributors to determine this part defective, but they deny my claim saying it is outside the warranty. Being covered under warranty is not the issue. I would like this part to be determined defective so that if i or other owners find it breaks off in the future it is replaced by toyota as it is an essential part of the normal functioning of the car. *tr

1. Driver door required more force to close. Later, i noticed the driver window would not raise more than half way. 2. The window regulator arm is bent, and the internal attachment point is broken. The window gets progressively worse over time, and the raised height becomes lower. 3. The dealer stated their must have been previous damage to the vehicle, and they were unable to resolve. Maaco said they were unable to resolve. More than a year later, took it back to the dealer, and the new service personnel were able to replace the regulator arm, and weld it to the door in march 2010. It's now june, and the window will no longer go past the half way point when attempting to close. Each time i've attempted to get a resolution, the dealer has insisted the internal door damage is a result of a previous accident (carfax is clear) or due to the previous owner replacing the door mounted audio speaker. Now, i read another complaint with very similar damage that makes me believe this is an inherent problem that the dealer should have fixed when the car was still under warranty. *tr

Hi, i was involved in a car accident december 2, 2009. I own a scion tc 2005 model. I was traveling on highway 440 outer beltline near ext 7 glenwood avenue. It was raining heavily at approximately 6:30pm when i hit a puddle in the left far lane and began hydroplaning, i hit the car next to me on my passenger side and started spinning approximately 4-5 times and hit the cement barrier on the bridge of crabtree creek. I hit the barrier head on and the spun around again and hit the back drivers side on the cement as well. My car ended against the cement barrier on the far right side of the road facing the wrong direction. My complaint is that my airbags never deployed. Luckily i was not severely injured but hitting head on it is my opinion and that of the owner of the collision repair shop that my car was brought to, that the air bags should have deployed for safety reasons. I was driving at a speed of approximately 50 miles per hour, no more then 55. I have done research that shows it only take speeds of 8-14 mph that the air bags should go off at a sudden deceleration, and i was certainly going faster then that. There were a few recalls on the airbags on my make and model of vehicle but these were mostly pertaining to the side and knee bags. I have filed a claim with the toyota/scion customer service representatives and sent them pictures and i do have a case number with them. The dot people that came to the site of the crash had mentioned that this site of road is being investigated for previous accidents. *tr

I was driving my 2005 toyota scion tc at approximately 7am on an expressway at 55mph my sunroof closed as well as the shade cover both closed. I heard a loud pop followed by bits of glass falling in on me and the car through the top vent holes of the sunroof. I pulled over as soon as possible off the expressway to assess what had happened not an easy task when cars are doing speeds of 55-70+ .When i view the damage it appears that some how the front wind deflector of the sunroof had popped up and shattered the glass of the closed sunroof all around the edges along the track of the middle glass and it appears that it may have push the glass upward causing the middle glass to shatter and crumble inside the vehicle on to the shade cover that thankfully was closed leaving about an 8x4 inch whole in the glass and the rest of glass cracked and crumbly with chunks of glass on the inside as well as outside the car. Extremely dangerous but very thankful it did not cause serious injury to myself or anyone driving on the road with me. I brought the car to my dealer and they claim the car was hit by something that shattered the glass and told me to contact my insurance company to do the repair. After reading about the numerous other complaints for the exact same problem i will be returning to the dealer today to further argue my point , no repair made at this time . My concern is that i have read that people have had multiple incidents after repairing the damage . There is no doubt there is a major flaw in the design of the sunroof . There was a recall on the wind deflector that involved putting some type of film over the deflector that would prevent it from cracking if hit by debris while open stopping it from breaking apart and flying off. I had that recall done in 2007 . I was told now that this incident had nothing to do with the recall issue, i disagree i believe the recall should have been for the mechanics of the wind deflector it some how was forced to open up. *tr

Purchased 2005 scion tc new on 12/29/2004 have had several problems with interior trim and paint. Then last june (2009) when opening the trunk (hatch back) the latch plate came off the car in my hand hanging by a cord. This plate is made of very thin plastic and attached to the car with thin plastic clips. The clips are not strong enough to with stand the constant use and amount of upward pressure it takes to raise the hatch. In december 2009 the lever on the drivers seat back to move the seat forward to allow passengers in the back stuck and wouldn't move. Couple days later the lever would move but didn't work. The seat back can only be moved now using the lever at the side of the seat bottom. The car had less than 50,000 miles on it when the trunk/hatch piece broke off and under 60,000 miles when the seat lever stopped working. All the interior trim pieces that line the hatch window have broken off and they are also only held in place with these very flimsy plastic clips. Once that "soaked" in, i realized i heard wind noise (i remember thinking that was odd because windows were up and sunroof was closed). I pulled back the sunroof screen and, to my astonishment, saw that the sunroof had spiderwebbed into thousands of tiny pieces...Pieces that were already starting to fly off into traffic behind me. I pulled over and got out to look at the damage. The sunroof looked like something had blasted it from the inside out. I cleaned up the glass the best i could on the side of the highway and headed straight for the dealer. I had heard of deflector shattering (recall was completed on my deflector), but not the sunroof. The dealer refuses to pay for the sunroof even though i have the extended warranty. They claim that it was caused by a road hazard. The weather was mild, nothing hit my sunroof from the outside and, based on similar instances filed here, i firmly believe there is a defect with the design. Toyota should do the right thing, fix this issue and honor their warranties. *tr

The car would stall when trying to accelerate more quickly than normal. This occurred three times in approximately 10 days. This occurred twice on town roads, and the third time while entering the interstate to deliver the car to the dealer for repair. A diagnostic test was done which produced code #P2112--throttle actuator stuck closed. Three new parts were replaced: hose, throttle body; body assy, throttle; gasket , throttle bod. *tr

I own a 2005 scion tc (manufactured by toyota). Recently the driver side power window was unable to close. The window would go half way up and then stop. It would go down fine from the half way up position. The motor was in good working order. I took my car to a local garage and they said that the window had come out of the run channel and that the metal piece which holds the run channel was bent and cracked. As the door and window mechanism has never had any kind of trauma and as the parts are all within the structure of the door i can only assume that the parts and/or installation of the window pieces were defective. I surmise that over time (vehicle is just 3.5 years old with 45k miles) the force of the normal window operation has warped the defective parts holding it in place. In my research i noticed that toyota issued a safety bulletin (nhtsa action # ea08004) for 2004 on their corolla and matrix models for a power window problem on these cars. I think my problem may be related to this. My local toyota dealer is not being cooperative saying my car is out of warranty so i intend to take up the issue with the regional representative. Ps my mechanic said that he'd guess that my car wasn't the only scion tc that had this problem.

The throttle body stuck open causing it to rev to excessive rpms and then would finally die. This happened while driving at highway speed in 7/08. The throttle body was replaced and then once again it failed, this time sticking closed causing the car to die in an intersection. This was in 3/11 (this year) with only 73k on it total miles ( only 30k on this throttle body). When we received the new part this time, it had been obviously redesigned with a vent allowing corrosion not to occur. This is a real hazard when you have no control over engine speed while driving. With the redesigned part ( a toyota/scion part) it is obvious this was a "known" problem, yet no recall was ever issued or received. *tr

I purchased a 2005 toyota scion tc on may of 2005, which currently has aprox 35,400 miles. The problem i am having relates to the front suspension. When ever i pass over rough surfaces there is a distinct metallic rattling sound originating from the suspension area . I have taken the car in to the hollywood, ca toyota dealership twice to have this problem addressed, but as of yet it has not been resolved. I was driving on an interstate highway at approximately 60 mph with all the windows closed, including the sunroof. Both the sunroof had the shades pulled as well. The outside temperature was about 85 degrees, and the a/c was running in the car. Suddenly, i heard an extremely loud pop which sounded like a gun shot. Seconds later, i heard bits of glass bouncing down the back of the car. I opened the shade of the sun oof only slightly enough to see that the entire sun roof shattered and as i drove, chunks of the glass were flying off the car. When i was able to pull off and assess the window it almost appeared as if it had been hit from the inside. The glass around the entire portion of the window was broken and pulling away from the sides and it puckered up toward the center of the window. This was an extremely distracting incident, and potentially dangerous. I was lucky to have the shades pulled so that the glass did not fall into the car. We had previously taken the car to dealer to have the deflector shield treated because of the recall. *ak

Car: 2005 scion tc purchased: mcgee toyota of hanover, ma in may 2007. -emergency brake failing 2 weeks after purchase, which caused an accident. -the dealership misdiagnosing the wheel bearing (2-3 times, finally fixing it). -we've been to mcgee toyota probably 5+ times now, and woburn toyota twice, all for problems with a 2005 scion tc. One of the other issues was when my wife bought the car, she bought a toyota extended warranty. We noticed a few weeks after purchase that the weather stripping was dry-rotting, and woburn toyota said they wouldn't replace it since it wasn't a factory windshield. We were originally told by mcgee toyota that we could take this car to any toyota dealership and the warranty would be valid. Why were we not told by mcgee toyota when she bought the car, that the windshield had been replaced? Mr murphy said he would do anything in his power to make us happy. Mr murphy said he would replace all four tires on the car (because we also noticed there were 3 different tires on the car), as well as replace the windshield for us. We picked the car up yesterday, to find her seats leaned back (it looked like some teenage kids just got done joy-riding), two bubbles in the middle of the new(another aftermarket windshield, which is not covered under warranty ? Again!) windshield, a loud squeal coming from the engine when revved, and the clutch making a very loud and noticeable squeak when depressed. It seems that when we bring the car in for something, we leave with 2-3 more problems. When addressed by a manager, it comes to no avail. I attempted to talk with a manager about those issues, and when i refused to shake his hand, we were asked to leave! There are many more issues with this car, which are too many to list in this initial complaint. *tr

At lunch time i made several stops (never opening the sunroof) and after coming back from the last store, i found the wind deflector shattered. I never heard anything hit my car. I did have the recall laminate in place but there was glass shards and pieces from the edges and the bottom. Both dealers i went to cannot tell how the damage happened since the whole thing is shattered. There is no sign of a rock hitting it. 2) i cannot open sunroof or window for fear more glass will break off into my car. 3) i have gone to 2 dealerships (toyota) and both told me to that my insurance will have to pay for the damage. Part has to be ordered through deal only. The first dealer was not helpful and even told me any glass place could replace which turned out to not be true. Around 10 months ago i was driving down interstate 27 with my sunroof completely closed. There were no other vehicles around me. Suddenly i heard a loud noise, i swerved a quite bit and then i noticed glass was falling on my head. I looked up to see my sunroof was gone. I immediately went to the dealership where they replaced the glass on warranty. Since it was replaced at no charge to me i was satisfied. The second incident happened last saturday night (9-16-06). I was driving home with the sunroof closed. There were no other cars around. We heard a quieter noise that sounded like glass shattering; we looked at all the windows but saw nothing wrong. The next day i noticed that the wind deflector was completely shattered. Most of the pieces of glass were still there except the leading edge of the glass. I've had the plastic film put on the car according to the recall but it isn't completely effective because there is glass missing. The dealership wouldn't replace the part on warranty. I am now in a dispute with scion to get them to replace the deflector. My car is still under warranty yet they won't replace the defective part stating that they have a policy against replacing glass for any reason. I have tried for a week now to resolve this with scion. They have told me that a representative will call me the next business day yet they don't call me. I have told them every time that i called that i can't drive my car until this has been resolved. I have done some research and found, on scion's forum (www.Scionlife.Com), many other people that this has happened too. There are many people that state their deflector has shattered, other people's sunroof has shattered and still other people's moon roof has shattered. Some people were moving when it happened, others were parked.Scion replaced the part on most of the other vehicles. With all the glass panels in the roofs of these cars shattering for unknown reasons it's obvious to me that there is a dangerous design flaw.*nm

I took my 2005 scion tc to dealer to have a routine warranty oil change. Tech told me that power steering fluid was completely black. When pressed for an explanation, i was told this was normal wear (even at only 25,000 mi). I had the fluid replaced for a hefty fee, but called to speak w/ a service manager and was again told that this is a normal wear issue "for all toyota's" and was assured that nothing was wrong with the steering system. I have never heard of this being "normal" as this is a contained system. Another friend mechanic said it sounds as though something within the system is corroding or wearing (possibly metal chips or wearing of black rubber hoses). I am in the process of writing a letter to toyota/scion headquarters, as i haven't been able to find a reasonable explanation or a service bulletin and my warranty will be up in another 5000 miles. While driving my 2005 scion tc on the interstate highway, i heard a loud pop. After the pop i heard glass shattering and flying off the top of the car. The only thing protecting me from shattering glass was the sun shade. Yet, almost immediately glass started coming through the vent holes on the sun shade and falling down on my head and flying in from the sides. When i stopped to look at what had happened, it appeared that the top sun roof had exploded. Nothing had hit the car from the outside that i was aware of. I know that i would have seen it or heard something hit the car, not the loud pop that sounded like an explosion. I looked on your site and was able to see that other owners of scions have experienced this same problem. I am waiting on toyota to determine how this will be fixed and if they will cover it. I was cruising in my 2005 scion tc at approximately 40 mph on a smooth road with the moon roof closed. Air temperature was in the high 90s and, as i had been driving about an hour, the interior had been cooled by the a/c. There was no traffic within sight either ahead or behind me and no trees, overpass, etc., above. I heard a loud gunshot-sounding "bang" and found, when i pulled over, that the glass of the front wind deflector of the moonroof had shattered. There was no evidence of any object impacting the glass. Because the moonroof had been closed, glass particles did not enter the passenger compartment. The moonroof wind deflector glass was replaced by my local authorized dealer under warranty (after i called their attention to similar failures of other vehicles); the fragments of the old glass were removed and disposed of by the dealer. Subsequent to that, a "safety recall notice" (#ssc 50s) was received from the manufacturer and a "protective laminate" was applied to prevent glass fragments from entering the passenger compartment in the event a recurrence of the failure is experienced when the moonroof is in the open position. Contrary to this manufacturer's recall notice, i was not driving with the moonroof open, i was not driving at "highway speeds" and the glass was not impacted by road debris. I feel there is a flaw in the manufacturing process of the glass used in the tc's moonroof. *nm

As he was getting something from the vehicle and shut the door the deflector broke. I purchased my car at the end of nov in 04, about a week after i noticed a ton of scratches on my vehicle. I took it to the dealer and had the gm look at it, no help. I made an appointment and they said they would look at it. Still has not been looked at and it is now jan of 05. My car has over 500 small scratches and the clear coat is bubbling off the paint. I have done a lot of research and found this is a big problem with the 2005 scion tc. I was treated like a complete moron and no one wanted to help me and i was dismissed out the door.*ak

My 2005 scion tc purchased new had several swirl marks in the paint i was told it was from the porter washing the car to deliver to me. I said i refused to accept the car with the paint like that. They said i could bring it back and they would have it buffed out. I should have known then that there was a problem with the paint. This is my 6th new car 2nd new toyota i have never seen paint scratch, chip and bubble like this not to mention on a new car. My best friend owns body shop for high end cars and has cars shown at the concourse level he said that the problem is insufficient layers of paint and poor quality clear coat. My car is washed only by hand with the best available products and waxed the same way. I live in southern california several miles from the beach drive on city and freeway roads there is nothing in my driving habits that would cause the amount of paint damage i am experiencing. I even picked my car up from being serviced at the dealership and there were many scratches down to the metal and the dealership won't acknowledge them. I am on the phone with scion customer experience at least once a month over this car. There are so many complaints filed with the nhtsa for paint issues, this problem will never be a safety issue but it is an issue and i don't know who else to contact that has the ability to make the manufacture/dealership correct this for all the current owners and future buyers. My side view mirrors look like they have been sitting out in the desert for years the paint is completely cracked and faded. The slightest piece of road dirt hits and the paint is chipped all the way to the bare metal. This is not normal. Cars that cost less and are years older have better looking paint. This is an expensive problem to fix but that expenses shouldn't be the consumers that trusted the reputation of toyota and spent hard earned money for the privilege of owning a new car. Its unfair to the consumer, unjust and beneath toyota. *tr

The manual transmission toyota scion tc has a violent cold start jerking and bucking at a slow speed when it is started until the engine is warm. The dealership has tried to replace sensors and it continues to do the same thing. Toyota claims it is operating as designed as there are no computer "fault codes" displayed. Others have driven it and claimed that it is not normal, but toyota refuses to do anything about it - "it is operating as designed." many dealers have looked at it and have not been able to fix it, although they agree that the manual transmission vehicle is not as popular as the automatic and few people pursue the problem. Autoweek magazine wrote about the problem in the september 19, 2005 issue and the official response from scion was that there was no problem with the vehicle although it would buck and jerk for them as well. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle's front brakes made a loud screeching noise when the brakes were applied and caused increased stopping distances. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on 6 occasions and the front brake pads and discs were replaced twice. This did not remedy the problem. The manufacturer was not contacted.

I was driving down the highway at approx 70 mph. I had the sun roof opened. While driving i heard a loud crack and glass came pouring in from the sunroof opening. I went straight to the dealership by my house. The front panel that angles up was broken all around the entire piece of glass. They said they could not see a point of impact where something may have hit. He said he could still hear it cracking as we were standing there talking. He said since there was no point of impact it should be covered under warranty. (i've only had the car a month.) i am currently awaiting for the piece to come in. This has happened at least one other time that i've heard of from a scion web site. I can only imagine what could have happened if i hadn't ducked down when i heard the crack. Even with ducking down i had glass down the front of my shirt, the back of my shirt and in between my back the the seat of the car.*ak

I purchased a silver scion tc in late july of this year, 2004. I noticed after less than two months of driving on regular suburban roads that there were several large chips on the front of my hood. Since july, more and more chips have formed and begun to peel and get larger. Even the bumper has chipped badly and there are several chips that actually stick out of the paint- as if they're bubbling. After waiting 2 months to see the "scion" district manager, he blew me off after 3 minutes of being rude and barely bothering to look closely at my chips. I believe there is a defect in the paint and that there are others that are having this problem with the scion brand.*ak

On august 17 @ about 4:30 p.M. In ther afternoon the wheels on my scion tc locked up going about 35 mph on the hyperion bridge. I applied the brakes in order to slow down on a slight turn at the end of the bridge and the rear of the car fishtailed and my rear right wheel hit and scraped the curb. Nothing yet has been done to correct the problem. I have reported the incident to toyota/scion. It has taken them a week to even get back to me to tell me that a field engineer will be inspecting the vehicle. The car is still at the dealership (toyota of glendale. *ak

Scion admits there is a problem with the combination of accessories:1) auto-dimming mirror and 2) side curtain air bags. When the mirror is installed there is a chance that the wiring obstructs the air bags. They claim a tsb will be issued but can give me no time line for the issue of a new wiring harness. Dealers will not even pull the driver's "a" pillar trim to see if the wiring happens to be correct. So, we just wait ... And wait ... And wait and pray that there is no need for the airbags to function. There is also a problem with the "lid" covering the radio. It functions when it wants - often taking many attempts to get it to open. On the open road this is quite a distraction. We all know how many accidents are cause by such "minor" distractions as tuning the radio, talking on my phone, etc. *nm

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 scion tc since purchase on 7/16/2004. The day after purchase the front tire was sitting on the rim. Terrible problems with scratches it seems as though you look at it and it scratches and the paint is peeling and bubbling all over, the power lock button fell inside the door within the 1st week i had the car. Have been to dealership 3 different times concerning the sunroof making terrible rattling noises and it sounds like the whole top of the car is moving when you make a turn, then after it rains, i live in fl and no visible water is on the top, open the window and water on the lip of the sunroof leaks water all over you. They have took the car apart for sun roof and can't fix, tore out the headliner. Also the inside metallic parts scratch easily, the dealership tech destroyed the part around the gear shift. My car insurance has doubled since i bought this car because of accidents i have less than 9,000 miles on this car, have met with gm, and everyone thinks your crazy. This is the worst car i have ever purchased and it has been nothing but a nightmare, the people at the dealership say oh your the only one with the paint problem , it's wear and tear, yet we have another new vehicle that gets driven to work every day and the paint looks better than my car. I am very disappointed with toyota and i traded in a toyota to get this car, i guarantee you i will never buy another scion, i have wondered why they are not advertised on tv, now i know why. I spend my time going to the doctors and the dealership being treated like an idiot. They kept my car 5 days last time and want it again. If your car leaks like mine please report it as they have had an outside rain doctor check it out an it says it's designed that way, yat it did not do this in the beginning. I hate to trade it in and pass this nightmare on to someone else. I have come across tons of complaints and many service advisories.*jb

A youngster weighing 140 lbs. Leaned on the windshield and it shattered. It has been 5 days, and when contacting manufacturer's headquarters, they refused to replace a windshield for free on the basis that they could not confirm it was defective after the fact! It bothers me to think that a 'perfectly good, safe' windshield can be shattered by merely 'leaning' on it! What will happen if i crash? Or if a palm tree branch falls on it? I guess i will have to die or get injured to find out! *ak
