As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard number 221, "school bus body joint strength."

The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.

Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.

  On certain school buses, an information label may detach from the auxiliary heater fuel pickup tube and block the engine fuel suction tube, which could restrict or stop the flow of fuel to the engine. Engine stalling would result in a loss of vehicle propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road condition and the driver’s reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. • Rear leaf spring fractures investigation # PE19007

  Nhtsas office of defects investigation (odi) has identified field reports in daimler truck north americas (dtna) 2018-4th quarter early warning reporting (ewr) data describing cracked rear leaf-style suspension springs in thomas built school buses. Odi reached out to 3 municipal school bus fleets operating subject vehicles who described similar failures where a fractured piece of leaf spring separated from the vehicle while driving. Odi also contacted a major nationwide school bus transportation service provider who also identified numerous potential failures.A fractured piece of leaf spring that detaches from a moving school bus could potentially strike a pedestrian or a following vehicle.Odi is opening this investigation to evaluate the cause, consequence, scope and frequency of the alleged defect (item detachment) in the subject thomas built school buses.
