• Recall 116928 [USA]: If the stem corrodes, the door handle could detach from the emergency door opening mechanism, delaying the opening of the door and the evacuation of the bus. in the event of an emergency, this may increase the risk of injury to the bus occupants.
  Daimler trucks north america llc (dtna) is recalling certain model year 1998-2002 thomas built buses saf-t-liner conventional, 2000-2002 saf-t-liner er, 2000-2017 saf-t-liner mvp-ef, 1998-1999 vista, 2003 saf-t-liner fs65, 2013-2017 saf-t-liner c2, 2000-2002 saf-t-liner mvp-er, 2013-2017 saf-t-liner hdx. In the affected vehicles, the stem that connects the outside emergency door handle to the emergency door opening mechanism may corrode.
  dtna will notify owners, and dealers will either replace the stems or protect them against corrosion, free of charge. An interim notice was sent to owners on july 28, 2016. A second notice was mailed to owners on december 16, 2016. Parts are available. Owners may contact dtna customer service at 1-800-547-0712. Dtna's number for this recall is fl-713.

• Recall 32950 [USA]: Columns with two welds missing may fatigue and fracture and allow the steering wheel to progressively be moved out of its normal position which may cause the steering to respond differently than expected. if this condition is ignored, a crash may occur.
  Certain freightliner school buses and trucks manufactured from october 23, 2004, to march 21, 2006. During the steering column manufacturing process two welds may have been missing.

  On certain buses, the stem which joins the outside emergency door handle to the emergency door opening mechanism may potentially corrode. Excessive material loss of the stem due to corrosion could result in the outside handle separating from the door mechanism while trying to open the door from the exterior of the bus. In the event of an emergency, this could delay evacuation of the vehicle and increase the risk of injury to occupants. Correction: dealers will inspect the stems and either replace or protect them agianst further corrosion.

• Steering column weld cracks investigation # EA07002

  As a result of the odi investigation, freightliner has agreed to recall (number 07v-289) all of the vehicles manufactured with steering columns potentially missing welds.The recall remedy will involve inspecting the recalled vehicles for missing welds and if found replace the steering column.Early warning aggregate data submitted to nhtsa by freightliner suggested that a steering problem (ewr code 01) existed for the 2004 and 2005 century and columbia class vehicles.The count of field reports submitted for the first quarter of 2006 was higher than the average of the previous 6 quarters for the aggregate steering data.Odis further review of the ewr data foundfield reports that described steering column failures as a result of steering column welds cracking or breaking.Information received from freightliner detailed failures of the steering columns on the subject vehicles.These failures were the result of missing and cracked welds on the steering column assembly.During testing of vehicles containing defective steering columns, odi determined that weld failures in the steering column create a situation where the vehicle becomes difficult to steer or may startle the driver upon failing, thus presenting a safety risk.A copy of the recall is attached.Freightliners action resolves the issues raised by this investigation and, therefore, this investigation is closed.

The bus quit running, start running without turning the ignition, and they have numerous other electrical malfunctions. The biggest consequence is when the bus quits running while there is a bus load of students on. This leads to students being late to school or home. Furthermore, they lose power steering when the engine dies. This is especially dangerous when the buses are at railroad crossings and intersections.
