On february 28, 2010, my 1992 toyota 4runner had a repeated accelerator issue. My truck accelerated several times while my foot was off the accelerator. I was stopped at a traffic light when the truck surged forward. I pressed on the brake with both feet and the accelerator continued to race. I watched the tachometer go from 1.1k rpm to 4k rpm without touching the accelerator. This happened over and over again over a 1/2 mile stretch of city blocks (el cajon blvd in san diego, ca). I had to pull over several times because i could not control the speed. It was a very dangerous situation. I removed the placemat and the issue continued. In fact, when i applied pressure on the accelerator, the tachometer went from 4k rpm to 8k rpm in the red zone even though i was barely touching the accelerator. This is the first time this has occurred but it was extremely dangerous as i had to place the truck in neutral when actually riding on the street just to control my speed. My truck has 143k miles and i have never had this issue before. I am worried about my next trip. *tr

Mysterious coolant loss, pressurized system found no external leaks. Watched problem for about a month, kept topping up coolant. Driving home last night sudden loss of power on free way temperature spike, almost caused a major accident getting off freeway. Head gasket failure. Towed. Campaign has been done, toyota dealer will not honor labor or even the part, and it is quite an expensive repair for something that will fail sooner than later. My nissan has over 300,000km on it and never had a problem. Flawed design in head or block. *tr

I have a 1992 4 runner. I purchased it in 1997. I took it in for the recall on the head when i bought it. I now has another problem, on of the cylinder is only producing 20% compression. My mechanic said that it has to do with a problem with the head. Is this covered under the recall also? *nm

1992 toyota 4-runner, 3.0 liter, v-6, 4 wd truck in shop for blown head gasket & possible cracked block. I understand this vehicle has a design flaw which causes head gaskets to blow over and over in spite of so-called gasket "fix" by toyota which i had after 50,000 miles. Toyota should make it right to their customers by either fixing the flaw or reimbursing for costs to repair, tow & rent replacement vehicle. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle accelerated beyond the driver's effort 8 times and to 4 separate drivers. The first incident occurred on a freeway in 1998. While traveling 50 - 60 mph with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle accelerated to 80 mph. In an attempt to decrease the speed, it was placed into neutral, the brake pedal was depressed and the key was turned to the off position. This normally occurs at speeds of 50-60 mph, however there was one incident on local roads at 35 mph. On several occasions, the vehicle was taken to a service dealer where the throttle plate was cleaned. After each throttle plate cleaning, there was a reoccurrence. On the last visit to the service dealer, the throttle cable was replaced. The vehicle is currently not drivable.

I have a 1992 toyota 4runner with v6 3vze engine which toyota knows has a bad head design and head gasket failure. They have a recall for one time only replacement which was doen in 97 at 51k mi. By the previous owner. Last dec. I started having problems and the toyota dealership did not advise me that i had a blown head gasket. They wanted to change out fuel injectors since it was running rough. The roughness was from coolant leaking into the cylinders. After research i found all this info. Out. At the time i was ignorant as to this problem. Fred has toyota should have been up front with me and advised me f the situation instead of making me pay for something i didn't need. As they have done to me in the past. The exhaust gases escaping into the coolant system are over pressurize my system and it got to the point where it blew the bottom hose off the radiator. If i would have been in a parking lot or even my own family would have been standing 15 feet in freon of the vehicle they would have had 3rd degree burns. Thus, i had been driving it since dec and learning of what my problem is. It was a slow leak at first , but got progressively worse. It started overheating on me so i changed the thermostat, fan clutch. Radiator, and radiator cap. Paid all that money to find out that does not solve the problem. The problem is the exhaust gases over pressurize the coolant system due to the blown head gasket. Toyota has stood their ground and said they've lived up to their one time only recall. Im sure you are already aware of this "massive" amount of complaints about their head gasket problem. I just wished toyota valued customer service/loyalty. *jb

My wife and i own a 1992 4runner. The head gasket in the engine malfunctioned causing oil and water to basically get mixed. We took it to the local toyota dealer in our area (kendall toyota in miami florida). We tried to explain to them what is listed on your web site as known defect in our car's model and year. However they refused to acknowledge that. We ended up spending $2896.62 at the dealership shop to fix the engine problem. Considering that problem is a known defect as published on this web site. Is there a way your office can help us recover some or all of our money that was charged by the dealer inappropriately. *nlm

Had to replace battery, alternator was not charging. Alternator was replace on oct. 13,1997 because of my extra care warrenty. Again had to replace battery on dec. 6,1999. I was told by strauss auto who replace battery that the alternator was not charging enough. Took car back to b&l toyota at 3333 boston road bx, ny and they said everything was fine. But my car is still given me problems, the voltmeter keep shaking all the time back and forth from high to and just before the danger part of the voltmeter. On oct. 5,1998, headgaskets were replace because of a recall. But on oct. 19,1999 my car was leaking oil, so i took car to get service for brakes and to check oil leak, air condition which was had not being working. B&l toyota, did the brakes and they claimed that there was noting wrong with the air condition and that the oil leak was just a loose bolt. The next day i found oil leaking from my car again and the air was not throwing cool air. I tool the car back and they found that the headgaskest were damage and that the air condition valve was no good and kept the car from oct. 27,1999 to nov. 10,1999 to replace the parts. In the process of replacing the parts they cut wires from an extra cut off switch that i have in the car. They tried to fix the switch and had big problems trying to get my car to star. They fix the switch different from the original way it was done by someone else. My brakes are still making the same sound that they were making from the time they replaced them. It cost me $366.60 to fix my front brakes and to replace steering stops that only cost $3.26 each. They have not check to see if is something else other them the brakes. All i know is that since they replaced some parts and did the brakes, patched up the wires from the extra cut off switch my car has not being working fine. Now i have encounter another problems were driving home on christmas, my chesh engine light came on and is still on. I spoke to the customer relations manager diane.

If toyota had a recall on the head gaskets, why did/do they not notify the owners of these vehicles? I live in montana and if you have problems on the roads of out great state, you usually have alot of miles to travel for any kind of road side assistance! I've also noticed on someother 4 runners that the windshield just started to crack from around the edge under the seal! Mine started from the drivers side, top and down/across to center. Niticed some others starting from the bottom up! Did seem to start on the drivers side mainly! There was no indication of outside cause for crack to start (ei-rocks).

My husband, stanley w. Sirnik bought a 1992 toyota 4-runner. He only had it for two weeks when he decided to travel to west virginia. Stanley, my brother -in-law and my young son was coming back from shopping the next day. Stanley put the truck into cruise control at 40 mph. He was traveling along at 40 mph when all of sudden the truck started to accelerate up to a very high speed. He tried to take it out of cruise control but he could not. He applied the brakes, but the brakes would not work. To keep from going over a cliff, he ran up an embankment and the truck flipped over. Stanley was killed instantly. His brother was badly injured and my son was in the back seat in shock. I retained two law firms. The engineers said the cruise control caused the accident because of a defect in the design. Right before it was time to go to court in january of 1996, my big lawyers asked the court to withdraw from the case. The court granted their wish. I never knew what was going on with my case and why my lawyers wanted to withdraw after keeping and working on the case for four years. The lawsuite was filed in the state of maryland.
