Known Recall Investigations
  • Throttle control malfunction investigation # EA05021

On november 14, 2006 volvo submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning etm failures in model year (my) 1999 through 2001 volvo models (not including the s40 and v40), my 2002 s60 and v70 with naturally aspirated engines and my 2002 v70s.According to volvo, ¿a combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light and the subsequent onset of limp home modes."volvo further stated that,"this resulted in a high number of these vehicles going into limp home mode without need.¿volvo indicated that this was the most severe consequence of an etm fault in the subject vehicles. The recall remedy is a software upgrade introduced by volvo on march 16, 2006 in a customer satisfaction program. At the time of the notification 161,202 vehicles of the population of 331,301 had already had the software uploaded and were therefore not included in the population count of the recall. Odi¿s analysis of complaints to odi and volvo, volvo field reports and warranty data found that etm failure could result in (1) engine stall; (2) mechanical limp mode; (3) lunging forward during low-speed driving maneuvers; and (4) faltering during high speed merges or when crossing traffic.Odi identified 12 crashes related to etm failure, with 6 caused by lunging incidents, 3 caused by stalling incidents, 2 caused by mechanical limp mode and 1 from the faltering condition.Odis analysis of complaint data and information obtained from consumer interviews identified 1,289 incidents with safety related consequences (389.1 per 100,000 vehicles), including 479 involving engine stall (144.6 per 100,000 vehicles) and 729 involving mechanical limp mode (220.0 per 100,000 vehicles).Odis analysis of warranty claim narrative text shows at least 14,965 warranty claims with codes indicating an etm fault resulting in vehicle operation in mechanical limp mode (4.5% of the subject vehicles). Volvo¿s recall addresses odi¿s safety concerns with etm failures.Odi will continue to monitor the subject vehicles to determine if additional action is required. This engineering analysis is closed.

  • Steering binding investigation # EA04016

Odis investigationconcluded that the legs that retain the turn signal canceling ring (tscr), part number 1607363, to the steering wheel installed in model year 1998 - 1999 vn and vhd series vtna (volvo truck north america) vehicles are prone to cracking and breaking. When the retention legs break, the separated pieces of the tscr typicallyrepose in the host cavity in the steering wheel hub where they were deposited.Odifound that broken pieces of the tscr either (1) migrated from their host cavity and dropped completely from the steering wheel assembly or (2) lodged in various areas of the steering wheel proximate to the tscr.Odi simulated various locations and positions that a separated piece of the tscr might become lodged within the steering wheel assembly, but none of these simulations generated any appreciable increase in steering effort.

  • Steering binding investigation # PE04014

Odis preliminary evaluation focused on the potential for a broken, bent, deformed, fragmented or displaced turn signal canceling ring ("tscr"), vtna part number 1607363, to restrict thevehicle operators ability to turn the steering wheel. The pe identified thirteen vtna warranty claims that allege that the tscr had "failed" and that the vehicle steering effort had been adversely affected. To date, odi has not found any samples of a "failed" tscr and has not been able to definitively establish whether a "failed" tscr can or cannot contribute to increased steering effort.Odi believes that it is appropriate to conduct further investigation(ea level) to better understand the characteristics of tscr "failures" and to assess the effect, if any, that these types of failures could have on vehicle steering effort.

Just got gas and started car and the tachometer started to rev up and down. I needed to leave as i was in a gas station and it was very crowded. I had to immediately pull into a parking spot. After waiting a few minutes, i left the spot and attempted to drive down the street. The car wouldn't shift into any gear except first and i was almost run off the road by several very angry drivers since i couldn't go any faster. I pulled over again and waited 15 minutes. In arizona when it's 115 out, that is not too much fun. After waiting, the car must have reset itself and it started up fine. This was the fourth time this week that this has happened to me but this was by far the worst. *nm

Volvo 1999 s70 glt - i had a problem when i was driving my car would loose all the power. I was on the highway several times and i thought i was going to be hit by another car when i had to pull over. It cost $1200.00 for volvo to fix the problem. *jb

10/04 purchased a 1999 s70 volvo. Check engine light was on; dealership had it maintenance, i was told it had to do with the way the gas cap was put on. Light went on and off intermittently the next several months. 6/20 the ets light came on, and the check engine light was coming on more frequently and longer. When the ets light came on, i took it to volvo of louisville. They diagnosed the problem and said the catalytic converter needed replaced ($1,400) and gaskets ($312). They made the repairs. When i picked the car up and drove it, i could still hear the sound plus both lights were on. They worked on it again, and said the o2 sensor needed to be replaced; instead they were able to fix it. I picked the car up, and before i could get home, the car was now running hot and the air conditioner wasn't working. I called them - they asked me to keep it over the weekend and call monday. When they picked the car up, i told them not only was the car running hot, with no air conditioner, but it was making a loud noise. They kept the car for a week ($364). I picked the car up and before i could cross the state line, the car stalled out in the middle of rush hour traffic. First the idle was extremely rough, and you could touch the gas pedal, but no amount of gas would make the car move forward. If i turned the car off a couple of times, then it would finally work normally. I called the dealership, they asked me to drive it for the weekend and call monday. On saturday, the car gradually became harder to get out of the stall mode. When i pulled off the road, instead of 2 times and it would finally start and work properly, on saturday it took 4 or 5 times to get it to work correctly. By sunday, after it placing me and my relatives in an incredibly dangerous situation, i parked it and told them to come get it. On monday, the rep who picked it up, called in a towing service because of safety. This time they put a new throttle body on the car ($812). *jb

On february 7, 2005, i took my car for service check and oil change. However, i was not notified of the recalls and other defects which i locate on the www.Fox5dc.Com web page link for nhts.Dot.Gov on various service bulletins which have been issue on the 1999 volvo s80. I was very upset at the bill received over $3,000.00 for repairs. I found this to be an outrage. Please forward all the service bulletin reports for the 1999 volvo s80 to me and bill me any charges as required. Also note that i was not sure what "oem" meant and i did not check yes. If yes is required in this filed then i should have checked yes. This can be found in the component section of this questionnaire. Thank you. *ak

I had my sunroof open. A large flat metal rod fell out of it and hit me on the head. The rod is about 3 feet long and weights about 2-4 pounds. It is like a crowbar in color, weight and thickness, but it is flat and straight.*ak i have since found out that it is the piece attached to the inner rim of the sunroof. The dealer called it a sunroof brake. It appears to have been held in place by double stick tape. I had a slight bump on my head and i have had headaches. I was very startled. At first i thought it fell off a truck or power line, not my own car. My car model is an s80, but it isn't in your list of choices.
