Known Recall Investigations
  • Extended stopping distance investigation # PE21003

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this preliminary evaluation (pe) based on twenty-two (22) vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) for soft rear brakes caused by air seeping into the rear brake lines of model year (my) 2012-2020 ducati monster, multistrada, supersport, panigale, scrambler and diavel motorcycles. The consumers were alleging that the rear brakes would not properly function unless the rear brake pedal was applied several times or that there was a total loss of rear braking during normal applications, increasing the risk of a crash. In a march 2020 meeting, ducati indicated that they were aware of certain models in which air may enter the motorcycles rear braking system through the brake lines, due to exposure to heat from the exhaust system. Although this condition compromises rear braking performance, ducati stated that they did not consider this to be a safety defect because the front and rear brake systems are hydraulically independent from each other, and a motorcycles front brake system performs most of the stopping. Additionally, they believed that routine brake fluid replacement would resolve consumers concerns, however complainants and dealership service technicians reported that, in some cases, after a dealer serviced the rear brake system, the rear brake pedal would feel soft and spongy again (indicating compromised brake performance) less than a year later--well before the recommended two-year brake fluid service interval. As a precaution, ducati issued a series of technical service bulletins (tsbs) to replace the brake lines with redesigned ones, rerouting them away from the exhaust system.Odis position is that all of the brakes on a motorcycle are considered necessary for safety. Analysis of the data identified that neither the entire model line nor the entire model year range of motorcycles covered by the investigation were affected, but rather certain sub-models or narrower model year ranges of motorcycles incorporated brake lines with a higher exposure to the heat from the exhaust system. Because of the unique routing of each models brake line, some motorcycles are more susceptible to the condition than others. As these specific models and model years were most likely to exhibit an increased risk of a crash from the lengthened stopping distance, ducati converted the previously issued tsbs into a safety recall. After receiving a total of 94 voqs, odi is closing this pe with ducatis safety recall 21v-315. With the recall action taken by ducati, this investigation is closed. However, the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist on other models or my vehicles outside of the recall scope. The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

I purchased this motorcycle brand new in 2014. Since that time, the rear brake has never worked properly. It is extremely weak and does very little to slow down the motorcycle. It is available for inspection upon request. Many times i have used the rear brakes (in conjunction with the front brakes) and the rears do very little to slow down the motorcycle. In a panic stop situation, the rear brakes don't add anything significant to the stopping power. Multiple dealerships have inspected the rear brake and have told me that the weak rear brake is "normal" on all ducatis and especially the multistrada. Some have called the rear brakes "worthless." there were no warning messages, but the problem has persisted since the initial purchase of the motorcycle in 2014.

Rear brake pedal is very soft. With maximum force applied the abs seems to either lock up or fail altogether. The rear brake is very ineffective on this motorcycle.

The rear brake on the multistrada has a known issue of the brake fluid boiling and causing the rear brake performance to be non-existant. Recommendations have included not using the rear brake, which is not an option. I lane split, and the rear brake is perfect for controlling speed in small margins. I've run through multiple brake fluid services for the rear and lose performance within an hour of ride time.

The rear brake is lacking power creating an excessive and excessive stopping distance. It takes several applications of the rear brake pedal for the brake to build up pressure to have the ability to preform its intended function. Braking is so weak that it seems as if there is no rear brake at all most of the time. This occurs at all speeds, all riding situations, and all driving conditions. Rear brake is essentially no functional.

Motorcycle is designed with keyless fob. Fob will not always activate the dashboard as designed. Battery in the fob and the motorcycle are less than 1 year old. The fob's battery tests good using a battery tester. The bike basically leaves you stranded when you least expect it. Sometimes you can get it to activate by holding it in a certain spot, but not 100% of the time. Very unreliable. You should be able to walk up the bike with fob in your pocket, and it should detect its presence. It cost me a $50 tow. When towed to the dealership, the bike magically started.

Rear brake does not work. The pedal when depressed goes to the stop but does not slow the motorcycle. The rear brake is completely ineffective.
