Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel tank flange leak investigation # PE20018

The subject vehicles are model year (my) 2010 through 2011 land rover lr4 (l319) and range rover sport (l320) vehicles equipped with fuel tank flange part number ah229039ab. The office of defects investigation (odi) has received six consumer complaints (voqs) alleging fuel leakage from cracked tank flanges in the subject vehicles. In addition, odi identified 5 field reports and 200 warranty claims related to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles as part of the peer vehicle field data analysis in recall query rq19-004 regarding tank flange leaks in my 2010 through 2012 jaguar xf vehicles. In 2013 jaguar land rover llc (jlr) submitted a foreign recall report related to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles (foreign recall 13f-098). The foreign recall was conducted in eight middle east countries (bahrain, kuwait, lebanon, oman, qatar, saudi arabia, united arab emirates, and yemen). In response to odis information request letter for rq19-004, jlr indicated that a modified fuel tank flange was implemented as a running change in my 2011 production of the subject vehicles. Internal ribbing was added to the modified flanges, which increased the strength and creep resistance of the parts in the areas were cracking had been observed. Tank flanges with internal ribbing are identified by part numbers ah229039ac and ah229039ad. The modified flanges were used in approximately 27,882 my 2011 through 2015 lr4 vehicles and 32,822 my 2011 through 2013 range rover sport vehicles (peer vehicles). A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the failure rate and severity of the fuel tank flange cracking condition in subject and peer vehicles sold in the united states. The following voq numbers are associated with this opening resume: 11280630, 11220260,11155570, 11139276, 11132102, 11098107.

  • Spoiler cover detachment investigation # PE20007

The office of defects investigation (odi) analyzed complaints received from the public and complaint data submitted by jaguar land rover north america (jlr) in response to the information request (ir) letter for pe20-007. Odi identified a total of 132 non-duplicative reports alleging incidents in which the spoiler cover detached from the certain range rover vehicles while in motion, including 3 resulting in broken windshields, 6 involving detached spoilers striking trailing vehicles with damage unknown, and 4 in which the subject vehicle driver observed trailing traffic swerve to avoid the detached part. Odi’s analysis of warranty data submitted by jlr identified 266 claims to repair detached spoiler covers and 252 claims to repair loose covers. The subject vehicles are covered by a standard warranty of 4 years/48,000 miles. Analysis of part sales data found evidence of continued failures that may be related to the alleged defect after the warranty period, with 5,487 rear spoilers sold through may 2020. The number of spoiler sales related to the alleged defect is unknown. On october 8, 2020, jlr submitted a defect information report (dir) to nhtsa describing a defect in the adhesive bonding system of the rear spoiler covers in approximately 21,834 my 2010 through 2011 range rover sport vehicles manufactured from april 27, 2009 through march 28, 2011 (nhtsa recall 20v-623, jlr recall n499). Jlr’s report states that the recalled vehicles have a bonding agent that has insufficient adhesive properties. After numerous heat cycles the spoiler cover may begin to loosen from air turbulence experienced during high-speed driving. If a loosened spoiler cover is not detected and repaired, the cover may detach from the vehicle while driving and become an airborne road hazard. Detachments are most likely to occur during high-speed driving. Jlrs recall remedy will apply a new adhesive to properly secure the upper spoiler cover. This investigation is closed based on recall 20v-623. The odi reports cited above can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under the following id numbers:10984653, 11192264.

I received the notice in november of 2020 about this safety issue. Three weeks ago the rear spoiler flew off while driving at posted speeds down the highway, unbeknownst to me until i arrived at my destination. I immediately called the dealer to schedule the repair based on this notice, and am now being told the part is unavailable, with no eta. I am experiencing "loss of use" of my vehicle due to this safety recall, while i am waiting for this part. Land rover jaguar will not agree to cover any additional damage should i choose to drive my vehicle with the wiring exposed due to the spoiler not being replaced in a timely manner.
