The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ball joints, wheel bearings, transmission mount, universal bolt, and tires needed to be replaced. On 5/31/14, my 1997 mitsubishi montero was parked in my driveway. When i went to get into the vehicle, i noticed a large burn in the back of the driver's side seat. After calling mitsubishi, the fire department came since it was still smoldering and disconnected the battery. They believed it to be an electrical short. After many follow-up calls to mitsubishi, they believe it was caused by wear and tear since the car was 17 years old. All of the cost to fix the issue was on me as the owner. *tr

1997 mitsubish montero 3.5 liter automatic- crank shaft bolt has come out on 5 separate occasions and has cost over $3000 to have it replaced. The inside of the crankshaft where the bolt goes is completely stripped to the point i now have to replace the engine. This is not an isolated issue as this appears to be an inherent problem with all years of monteros. There should be a recall for this and mitsubishi should cover the cost for there negligence. *tr

This is the 2nd mechanic who has told me that it's an engine defect because the pin/bolt is too short. There is no warning before it happens. I own a 1997 mitsubishi montero sport ls. There was a recall for a crankshaft pulley bolt, nhtsa recall id: 00v311001. I took my vehicle to the mitsubishi dealer and they replaced the bolt. This was back in 2000. In february of 2008 i was driving, getting ready to get on the highway when i heard a grinding and then a loud noise from the engine, i lost power steering and quickly pulled over. Popped the hood of my vehicle and noticed that the crankshaft pulley had broken off. I towed it to my mechanic who stated that the crankshaft pulley bolt had broken. He gave me an estimate of $2400 to have the crankshaft replaced, or $3100 to put in a rebuilt engine. I called mitsubihsi and talked to s lady who was very rude, she would hardly let me say anything. She stated that there was nothing that they could do and to contact the dealership that had replaced the bolt. That dealership is no longer there, went out of business. Looking online i have found numerous complaints about this happening to people who own both the 97 and 98 models of montero sports, even after bringing their vehicles in for the recall. If this had occurred while i was traveling on the highway i could have been seriously injured as i lost all power steering. I feel that this is a serious safety issue, i know that mitsubishi issued a recall to fix this but their fix did not resolve the problem. I also feel that mitsubishi should pay for fixing my vehicle as it is related to the bolt breaking. *tr

Started car, noticed 3 random lights illuminated on instrument cluster. Then power steering was intermittent. Then a/c went out and would not cool down. Then power steering failed completely. Car was driven to repair shop nearby, since no local mitsubishi dealer. Mechanic found crankshaft bolt broken that led to power steering and a/c pulley not working. Incident led to near loss of control during turning , as power steering would "kick" in at times during cornering and lead to oversteer. The consumer further stated the dealer also found another defect in the vehicle in which the consumer also had to pay out of pocket. Dt: the contact stated the crank shaft pulley bolt broke on 10-24-05. She had recall 00v311000 repair work done in october -2002. The contact wanted to file a complaint because she was still having problems with the crank shaft. She felt this should have been fixed properly the first time. She spoke to the dealer and to mitsubishi. Mitsubishi told her to contact the dealer and it may or may not be covered. She contacted the dealer, and he told her that at the time of the recall they tightened the bolt, as stated in the recall. She though the recall notice should have stated the dealer should have actually changed the bolt.*ak

On 7-26-03 the contact brought it back because the timing belt came off again. He found there was recall 00v311001 and the dealer fixed it at no cost last week on 9-29--0) the timing belt came off again. He had the vehicle towed, and the mechanic could see the bolt sticking out. Talked to the dealer, and the dealer originally said they would repair it because it had a lifetime warranty. Later the contact found out from the dealer that the warranty expired. The estimate repair expense would be $500.00. He called the manufacturer and neither wanted to accept responsibility. The manufacturer would not pay for the repairs because the dealer did not repair it correctly. *ak

Recall campaign 00v311001 concerning crankshaft pulley bolt. While driving 65 mph the vehicle lost power and control. Consumer was able to pull the vehicle off the main road. Then, tow truck was called, and the vehicle was towed to consumer's home. The tow truck driver informed the consumer that the crankshaft pulley bolt broke. Consumer stated this was the second time that crankshaft pulley bolt needed to be replaced within a year after recall repairs were done.*ak

1. Brake light came on and has stayed on for a couple of days. Car was checked out and estimated charges for repairs to front brake, including new rotor, would be $1000. I was not aware of the recall for 1997 monteros in regard to brake lines. *ak 2. Service engine soon comes on at random and only goes off when the battery is unhooked and rehooked or replaced.

While driving a loud clanking noise was heard from the front. All electrical lights flashed on the dashboard. Steering column failed to move. Consumer was able to maintain the control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the main bolt to the pulley belt sheared off. *ak

In early 2003 i purchased a 1997 mitsubishi montero full suv. In april 2003 my girl friend was driving the car one day , when it just broke down on her .Hen she turned the key to start the car you could hear the engine, but the car would not start.I got it towed,and my mechanic looked at it and said one of the main fuse (mfi-multi fuel injection) had blown.*ak he replaced the fuse and the car was fine, two weeks later it happened again , so he replaced the fuse and i took it to the dealer. The dealer checked for any recall there was none.On 7/8/04 it happened again, but this time when the fuse was replaced i turned over the engine and the whole car was smoking through the hood and inside the vehicle i was so scared i ran away from it until the smoke went away.The car was towed to my home and my mechanic showed me all the burned wire in the harness, please let me now if there is a recall on this problem

1 - this just started happening, no accident or misuse. 2 - vehicle will not start at times and must keep turning ignition, eventually it stats. (changed battery, terminals, wires, etc, with no affect) alarm goes off sporadically or sets on it's own. Door locks unlock, then immediately lock back. Windows are not going up correctly and are tilting slightly causing a small air leak on both front windows. All problems are annoying but i can still get from point a to point b. This happens every day.*ak

Shoulder belt guide allows for belt to be trapped. This presents a safety concern in the the restraint system will not function properly in a crash.*ak

While sitting in traffic, passenger (wife) moved her window visor, a flame shot out towards her face coming from upper right corner of window visor, where wire for vanity mirror had chaffed over time, due to a plastic covering edge to hide wire.*ak flame was 4-5 inches long, 1 inch thick and flamed for 6-8 seconds, then large amounts of thick grey smoke came from area. Wire for vanity mirror had chaffed away the wiring cover and was touching the metal rod used to hold up visor. Fuse did not blow. This could have easily caught fire inside my headliner, behind dash, etc.

Problem with front and rear differential reported to dealership. They did nothing to fix, just reset check engine light. 3 weeks later car was in a rollover accident. Driver steered slightly to avoid collision with another vehicle that was making an illegal lane change and montero went out of control. Neither steering nor braking could stop or affect what was happening.

After vehicle crank shaft pulley was impacted and dealership indicated that it was okay. While driving the crank shaft pulley broke. The dealership is refusing to fix the vehicle. Please provide more details ts

While waiting for the light to change at zero speed, i was struck in the rear by a conversion van going approximately 40 mph. Primary impact caused the back of the driver's seat to collapse. The car was totaled and i as the driver experienced severe lower and upper spine injuries. Dt

While traveling at approximately 65 mph vehicle starting "thumping and squealing". Consumer stopped vehicle, and had vehicle towed to dealership, who determined that crankshaft/ pulley bolt broke, causing extensive damage to engine. There is a recall 00v311000 dealing with this issue. However, this vehicle has a 4.0 cylinder engine and would not be included in that campaign. I am inquiring on whether or not other other montero sport es owners have had the same problem with the bolt snapping and whether mitsubishi is doing another one of its cover ups. I've had same problems with my brakes twice now. My brakes pulsate at higher speeds. I've had my rotors resurfaced twice.(1) at 34,000 miles & (2) at 58840. The warranty the dealer ship gives me is 3 month or 3000 miles for pulsating, even if i were to buy new rotors. I' ve had to recently replace my right back shoe because it was rubbuing metal on metal but my left side was perfectly fine. They could'nt give me an explanation why. I'm tired of paying $ 500 for the same problem year after year. My antenna was replaced because it broke off, so i had the dealer put a new one in a year ago and now the antenna doesn't go down. My moonroofs cover (interior ) popped off while driving. I somehow managed to put it back in. These are the couple of problems i've encountered. I especially don't feel safe driving this truck when it starts to pulsate. I have a 4 month old baby & i'm always afraid something is going to go wrong.

Entire fan and clutch assembly. Sheared off while i was traveling in inter city traffic, if this failure would have occurred while traveling on a highway this assembly could have damaged either the steering, fuel or electrical system. The local dealer and factory representatives have reviewed and come to the conclusion that this is just a failure due to mileage. If this is the case there potentially are many vehicles of this type that may experience the same failure. *ak

My suv on numerous occasions has stalled when vehicle comes to stop. On one occasion, my wife was accelerating from a standstill-when the vehicle stalled. On each occasion, we were able to restart the vehicle without problems. However, with the vehicle stalling upon accelerating from standstill in the middle of an intersection could prove to be very dangeroul!!!!!!!!!!!

Manufacturer's recall sr-98-005; vehicle was taken in for repair work on brakes, dealer found problem in the brake motor, and wants consumer to pay $570 for additional repairs before the recall problem can be remedied. *ak

Child safety seat with the seat belt extended in proper locking mode the css still moves around on both sides. Gives more than 2 inches, which does not meet the fmvss of installing a childseat, (evenflo regular ultria), consumer has tried three different css in vehicle and nothing is compatible. *ak

This car has been in the shop 17 times within a year. It was bought brand new. The major problems we have with it are the wheen bearing, airconditioning and the engine shutting down with no warning. When we take it in either they say they cant duplicate the problem. With the wheel bearing, they fixed it the first time. It started to leak again and they said that it wasnt the wheel bearing.

Steering column knocks and rattles while driving under 30 mph. Dealer will not address the problem. Taken in 12 times. *ak

Left front brake lines are too close to air conditioner lines. Friction caused brakes line hose to have hole in it & leaked fluid. Was applying brakes & vehicle did not stop quickly. Had it repaired. Took to dealer & was reimbursed. *ak

Driviing at approximately 35 mph in center lane, hit side of another vehicle head on, both fenders and entire front was hit. Consumer almost hit windshield. Driver's air bag failed to deploy. Had seat belt on. Around $4500 worth damage on front alone .This defect can result in injuries in case of an accident. *ak

Abs brake problems; during normal braking, no inclement weather, when the brakes were applied the truck would pulsate very badly. The front rotors were resurfaced on december 31, 1997 at 4462 miles. At 7600 miles on mar 10, 1997, both rotors were replaced because of warping. Rotors are being replaced every 3 thousand miles. The problem still exists. *ak

After driving the car for 49 days the oil plug came out, all the oil fellout of the car and engine locked, dealer says it is not covered my warranty*ak

Design of the cup holder does not hold a cup properly. This allows the cup to fall over which distracts the driver. Also, causes liquid to spill all over the dash, which causes electrical problems. Please provide any further information. *ak

Consumer experienced the defect and had to pay $1355.56 for repairs and $130.00 for towing. I read in nov. Import service magazine that the rear brake hose will fail if the vehicle is lifted by the frame. If this is correct won't the brake hose fail when the rear wheel drop into a hole in the road? I do not own such a vehicle but am concerned if there report was correct that this will be a problem. They reported that the rear brake hose was too short and the rear axle will need to be tied up before the truck is lifted by the frame. Page 19 in tech. Tips section.

Despite repeated attempts to balance these tires - they consistently return to their original state and cause vibration at highway speeds( dot number: tire size: 265-70-15 )

I believe there to be a defect in the positioning of the seat belt mounts in the second row seats (seats directly behind driver's seats). The mounts are placed too high on the frame to allow proper installation of child car seats like the evenflow on my way base and the gerry brand booster seat. It is not possible to obtain a snug tie down to prevent lateral movement of the child seats. *ak

Front and rear brake rotors are prematurely warping due to excessive hea., dealer cannot identify why overheating occurs. Also, when applying brakes, brake lines leaked fluid, causing vehicle to vibrate and fade, resulting in extended stopping distance prior to/after recall repairs. Please give any further details. *ak

On certain occasions when applying the brakes, engine stalls, and vehicle has to sit for a few minutes in order to be started again. Dealer can't duplicate the problem. *ak

When driving over 50 mph a very loud wind noise has been coming into passenger's compartment through windows. Noise is so loud that it is drowning out radio. Consumer has contacted dealer. Dealer has not determined cause of problem. Please provide any further details. *ak
