The brake booster accumulator is leaking so it makes a 'chirping' sound from the left side of the vehicle. This is a recognized fault with this vehicle and a recall was issued i did not get notification of the recall so did not get it fixed. It has now become a problem which i am told could cause the brakes to fail, obviously a serious safety issue. I have spoken to mitsubishi and they will not honor the recall. *tr

It has now become a problem which i am told could cause the brakes to fail, obviously a serious safety issue. I have spoken to mitsubishi and they will not honor the recall. *tr

I drove my family to their doctor app. And when i was parked gasoline was dripping down in front of the drivers rear tire onto the pavement upon inspection i saw gasoline running off of the top of the gas tank i then went and told the parking lot attendant what was happening he then had to blockade that area of the parking lot off. I had call to get us a ride home . I had my vehicle towed home and had a mechanic inspect it and he found the steel gas lines were completely rusted thru on the pressure side and the return line as well upon further inspection he found severe frame rot and said it won't pass inspection when it comes due next time.

Consequently this led to my entire home burning down.

This week i have had two occurrences where the horn just starts blaring and won't stop. Once was in the afternoon, and the other was at 5:00 am. My only diy alternatives are to disconnect the battery (obviously can't use the vehicle), or remove the fuse (very unsafe). The vehicle was stationary, no weather problems, temperature was mild (around 70 degrees). Prior to this happening, the horn rarely worked at all; at least not when i wanted it to work. I googled the problem and it appear to be very widespread on this vehicle. From what i have found out, it involves removing the airbag assembly, so getting it fixed is very costly (over $1000). I expect to spend some money on a few items here & there on a 16 year old vehicle, but i don't expect to spend over $ 1000 on a vehicle just to make the horn work right.

Gas leak from the front mount area of the sending unit on top of the gas tank. Significant leak, odor of gas overwhelming. Quoted $1200 to repair. All salvaged tanks/kits in similar condition. Fire hazard, and it was recommended by auto masters to have it fixed for safety reasons. It leaks when it is running due to the built up pressure. The hydraulic brake booster, manufactured by aisin, failed due to a worn out pump motor. This is a brushed motor with no service interval so much as mentioned in either the owners manual or the factory service manual. Moreover, you can not purchase brushes for the motor from the dealer or anyone else. Here is a photo of the motor: http://i.Imgur.Com/dui0x0k.Jpg as you can see it's completely worn out. This was taken after it was cleaned with compressed air. The motor was filled with the remains of the brushes and commutator. It is extremely irresponsible to power a breaking system with such a low quality motor and not even give it a service interval. When this motor fails, so do the brakes. Every single generation three montero will suffer from this failure, some catastrophically. As more vehicles rely on electric power to stop, this is surely going to be an issue that nhtsa will be dealing with. *tr

On july 8, 2014 i noticed that when i applied the brake pedal, i would hear a noise from the left side of my truck. I wasn't sure what it was and i asked a few friends to look at it. One indicated that it had to do with the brake assist and found under the hood where the noise was coming from. After that i did some research on the item and found through safecar.Gov that this vehicle was apart of a recall from 2001 for the accumulator that is installed on the hydraulic brake booster. I am not the original owner of the vehicle and proceeded it to go the local dealer to have them fix this. I was told that the car had been fixed under the recall back in nov 2001 and due to this they refuse to fix the item. I filed a complaint direct with mitsubishi ([xxx]). This is obviously a known safety hazard and the mitsubishi refused to fix a problem they know exists. How do i know if the part they replaced isn't also faulty. The recall report indicated that over a period of time, it could result is leakage of the pressurized nitrogen gas from inside the accumulator and could result in a crash. When i asked the cost to repair the item i was advised it would be $2,000. This is simply insane. They know they have a problem so now mitsubishi raises the prices on the item so they can recoup the costs of the recall. The car/suv still runs like new, it passes inspection ,every time ! It never failed inspection. The body rot and rusted frame lead to my spare tire fall off the car while i was driving home in the middle of the night. I bought it new in 2001 and taught my kids to drive with it. When i took the vechile to firestone thre manager didn't even want it on the lift stating he didn't want his men to get hurt if the frame decided to brake. He would not work on the car anymore and told me to get rid of it, i didn't understand but after eyeing for myself and experiencing the tire drop out of its well. I wanted a second opinion i got that and it was the same response. I didn't have the money for a new vechile at the time . It was my second vechile i used on weekends doing craft events but sometimes i would travel far to nj, ny, nh , va.. It's was too the point when the vendors saw me coming to events they worried about my travel with. The vechile. It has sentimental value to my i lost my daughter in a car accident and keeping the suv i feel like my memories of her are still with me positively and fresh, lasting, loving. After she past i said i would never get rid of the suv. Today the plates are off its still in the driveway and still running. I feel the frame should have lasted a lot longer, it has some body rust around the wheel wells . It's paid for and running i never missed a beat with the oil changes etc. I want to keep the car, but can't not and i am devastated to rid my self of our family air loom. I cohan one side welded last year but to do the other side for 1k it might not be a good idea because it's breaking down faster now. The first few years when ii had the suv i had a garage but later years didn't. Living in ct some winters can be brutal. The local body shop offers 150.00 which i feel insulting. I really want a rust free frame

Recall on abs accumulator was performed years ago. Brakes once again failed almost completely with wife and 3 children. Luckily she remembered the parking brake and was able to stop. New accumulator replaced and brakes were again fine for 3 days...Complete failure again. Dealer informs us that the entire abs assembly needs replaced at a total cost and labor of around (between) $2800. And $3600.00. The recalled part (the accumulator) i am finding is a direct result of the entire abs assembly damage. If the pump tries and continues to try and fill the leaking accumulator the pump fails. As a result the pump and abs control (brain) module are all in one and the entire assembly needs to be replaced. What recourse do we have? How can we get mitsubishi to replace this defective "complete assembly" the vehicle is now useless as we save our pennies and scrape together what we can to fix a problem that we nor anyone else should have to fix. I see many reports of accidents due to this very problem. Please help! *tr

The horn randomly sounds off during the night. I've discovered its a temperature thing. When its cold or the interior cools down the horns starts to blow, but when warm everything is fine. So mostly at night this occurs. This should be a recall! As the connection ring inside the airbag is clearly faulty. The only fix is to replace the air bag or pull the fuse to the horn. How is this safe? I just bought this car and found the horn didn't work. There was no fuse! So i replaced it and that's when the problems occurred. I have had an issue with my truck because the horn quit working several years ago. I was told by the dealer multiple times that the airbag has a metal ring inside of it that makes contact to activate the horn when pressed. They claimed the ring has either deteriorated or broken internally and that is why the horn doesn't work and is a very common issue for years with these trucks. Based on the current recalls i am wondering if that also effects the airbags and if they will work properly or if there could be metal shards in there that when deployed could pose a safety issue. *tr

I had a total brake failure of my 2001 mitsubishi montero, found out there is a recall on them, yet mitsubishi will not honor it!.Here is recall. The accumulator that is installed on the hydraulic brake booster may have been improperly manufactured. Over a period of time, this could result in leakage of the pressurized nitrogen gas from inside the accumulator. Consequence the loss of this gas pressure could result in an abnormal noise from the left side of the dash panel when the brakes are applied, and possibly a delayed first time brake boost assist after the vehicle has been parked for a period of time, which could result in a vehicle crash. Remedy dealers will install an improved accumulator. Owner notification mailing began october 1, 2001. 2001 mitsubushi montero sport...Tie rod sleeve on passenger side unexpectedly came apart as i was pulling out from parking space onto busy roadway. This caused me to not be able to steer correctly. Mechanic replaced tie rod and feels that it was a manufacturing defect as threads where still intact just fitting was not proper. You have the ability to screw tie rod together and physically pull them apart by hand. Had this happened while driving on highway results could have been catastrophic. Before this incident there was no indication of a problem with the tie rods that failed so needless to say when they came apart it was a total shock. I do have the old parts that where removed for inspection if necessary. The repair bill was $285 i was hoping to be able to recoup our expenses. I'm hoping you can advise me on how to do this. Thank you. *tr

I have a 01' mitsubishi montero sport xls 3.0l as of the last week in march i had a problem with my a/c and call auto repair shop to make a appointment. To my surprise the mitsubishi/saturn shop, the place that i had taken it to 6mths to a year be4, my oxygen sensor to be replaced and some other things, was gone out of business. So i call where i purchased the vehicle from, and was told that i could goto a licensed mechanic shop to get my a/c fixed, oxygen sensor had default again, but it still had warranty on it with the previously shop so the recent shop could not replace it and i also still had warranty coverage with the credit union that i pay monthly payments to. So i called the warranty group, and the warranty group paid for a/c to be fixed and i only had to pay 100 deductible. I received my suv back about a week later, then i noticed a knocking within the motor so i went back to the repair shop, and was told that i needed a oil change, but i just recently had a tune-up and oil change. So i knew that i didn't need a oil change. The shop could not determine what caused the knocking noise, but on 5- 23-10 my suv had malfunction this time my crankshaft, pulley, rods had separated and the only thing that was holding my engine together was the main bolt. So i got it towed back to the repair shop and i had to get my engine replaced. The warranty group paid for the pre-used engine, and i received my suv back on 6-11-10. I did not drive my truck no more then to my home and parked it in my yard, but on that tuesday june 15, 10 i went into a furniture store for about 20 mins. And left my a/c on, came back and only the fan was blowing, so i cut-off my suv and waited for 5mins. Cut my suv back on and drove back home with no problems. I was driving my vehicle, suddenly my brakes fail. I almost struck a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. My brake pedal was very hard. I had my mechanic check the vehicle. My brakes pads were fine. I later learn from the mitsubishi dealer that i need a abs hydraulic unit. The repair is very expensive. My car is in good condition only 58,000 miles. Mitsubishi refused to cover the parts. At this moment the car is park. Can't seems to understanding how an abs unit fail suddenly leaving the car with no brakes. Believed it's a manufacture defect. *tr

Our 2001 mitsubishi montero ltd. Experienced a near complete brake failure after the vehicle had been parked overnight. My wife was taking our children to school when the vehicle would not stop at an intersection. To avoid running into traffic, she was forced to throw the vehicle into park because there was less than 10% braking power, even after pumping the brakes several times. There was a strange noise coming from the engine compartment near master cylinder assembly. Local dealer in murrieta, ca told us that the vehicle already had been serviced for hbb accumulator recall, and that the vehicle did not qualify for repairs. Also mileage was over 150k at 184k. We had the accumulator replaced by another certified mitsubishi mechanic which solved the braking problem. 6 months later, we experienced a second brake system failure, also losing about 90% of braking power. This time the brake and abs lights on the dash came on and a buzzer sounded continually. The problem was initially intermittent, but now the lights and buzzer stay on continually. Took vehicle to the same mechanic who fixed the hbb accumulator and after diagnosing the vehicle he stated that the hydraulic control unit was malfunctioning. The vehicle is currently awaiting repairs. I am writing the complaint due to the fact that the loss of brake power is nearly total and without warning. We avoided serious accidents only by divine providence. It seems that any brake system on a modern vehicle out to allow for some subsystem failures and remain able to stop the vehicle. I have heard of abs or booster failures on other vehicles, yet they maintain the ability to stop the vehicle, that seems to not be the case with the mitsubishi montero. It also would seem that the manufacturer has had ample opportunity to remedy this situation since 2001 and yet seems unconcerned that their design is so significantly flawed. *tr

The horn on my mitsubishi montero sport is defective. It constantly blows fuses, and when i can finally for some reason get one in the fuse slot without blowing, i will be driving down the road and my horn will just start going off and it wont stop until i pull over and take the fuse back out. *tr

The horn button sometimes sticks when used and goes off frequently in the cold of the evening many times in the 4-6am hours. The horn is very loud and wakes the neighbors. This has become such an inconvenience that initially removed the fuse for the horn - this is very unsafe! Right after disabling the horn someone almost backed up into me! So i have re-enabled the horn system (put the fuse back). This horn button is also the airbag unit - so it is very expensive to replace. So i have wired a switch in the horn circuit, so that i and my neighbors can sleep at night - i just have to remember to flip the switch back on when i get in the truck. *tr

In 2001 when the car was still very new this recall was conducted and my vehicle was "fixed" according to dealer records. Now i am having the same problem again and the dealer and mitsubishi motors say it is my problem now. If their recall does not work then they are liable, not me. This is a safety issue, other people have had their brake fail completely and not be able to stop because of this issue. In jan. My wife started to get a whiff of gasoline every now and then when she got out of her 2001 montero sport. It was not enough to arouse suspicion. In the week of 3/27/06, the smell became severe. I found gas running down the gas tank, dripping onto a hose running below it, and to the ground. I brought the vehicle to be repaired at vachon mitsubishi on thurs., 3/30/06. I was contacted by vachon and told that the tank was rotted at the seam and would need to be replaced. I asked if this would be under warranty as the car was only 5 years old and had 44,000 mi. Vachon informed me that it would not be under warranty. The repair would cost $1083. I called mitsubishi to question the warranty as i have never heard of a gas tank wearing out so quickly. They informed me that it might be covered under the 7 year/100,000 mile corrosion warranty. I contacted vachon and had them look into it. It was discussed with regional management and they decided that it would not be covered, it would be part of the expired emissions warranty. I again called cust. Service. I told them that this failure was too far out of sorts to be out of warranty. Gas tanks last 20 to 40 years and this decision should be reconsidered. I was told that it would be reviewed. I was again refused. I asked that a higher level of management review the case. I was told that it would be done and someone would get back to me. 5 days later, i called back because nobody called me. I was told that the case was reviewed again and again they decided against me. My case never got to a higher level of management, it was decided by mr. Tessmer, the regional parts and service manager every time. I asked if i could speak to mr. Tessmer. The answer was no. At this point the car is fixed. It will cost me $1100.06 to pick it up, more than the price quote. My wife and 7 year old had been complaining of frequent headaches. I drove the car 2 more days and the wheel bearings locked up on me while driving - the car almost came to a sudden stop, veered off to the left of the road... (3) i found the parts cheaper on the internet ($233/per hub) and had a local mechanic install them and saved hundreds. **while searching for the parts, i found several other bulletins, notices even on the nhtsa website, and plenty of unhappy 2001 montero customers that have had to spend nearly $1,000 to replace both hub assembly's **i think this is ridiculous that these hubs are going bad for such a new vehicle... I purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero ltd from gibbons toyota in eynon, pa. I also purchased a warranty from them. My engine light comes on. They say sensors have to be changed. Light came back on. Changed another sensor, light came on. Now they say it is the catalytic converter. They tell me it is covered by mitsubishi for 8 yrs. They try ertley motor world numerous times and cannot get them to respond. They are in wilkes-barre, pa. Gibbons mgr then contacted domiano's in archbald. They to did not want to have anything to do with this. Why is it that mitsubishi dealers will not stand behind their warranty's. This is the 4th mitsubishi i have owned, and now that i see the service, it will be the last. They are very ignorant people. They treat you like dirt. Very arrogant. Something should be done about this. There is an 8 yr warranty on the converter, and it should be changed with no hassle. Thank you. This has been going on for the last 6 months. *jb

Dt: the contact stated that while driving on an incline the gear shift indicator moved from drive to neutral. The vehicle would not move forward, so he pulled over. Upon stopping the check engine light came on. There was smoke coming from under the hood, but no fire. He walked away from the vehicle and called 911 and a towing service. When the tow truck arrived he discovered a lot of oil underneath the vehicle and suspected this was from the transmission. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, who noted that the transmission line disconnected from the vehicle. There was no explanation as to why this occurred. The dealer installed new lamps, refilled fluid to proper levels, and cleared the code. The transmission line was also replaced with a new one. No further problems since the repair. *ak

I purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport used in march 2004, one month after purchase i brought it to the dealership with a complaint of a knocking noise in the engine. The dealership said nothing was wrong. I have properly maintained my vehicle since day one and learned to live with the knocking noise. On oct 23, 2005 the while driving down the highway the knocking noise became excessive so i pulled over, turned the engine off, waited a minute and restarted. As i started to accelerate there was a loud knock and smoke was coming from under the hood. Mitsubishi is claiming the vehicle threw a rod due to sludge in the engine. The are saying this was due to neglect of the vehicle due to the owner, although they have never once asked me for records of maintenance, which i have. They then say it was from neglect of the previous owner. In a report i received from the dealership my vehicle has been sitting they say "engine failure due to oil starvation". I have records of 5 oil changes in 18 months. Right now my vehicle is still inoperable and have a date set with the national center of dispute resolution. Hopefully mitsubishi will suck it up and do what they are suppose to do under warranty. *jb

Last year in november of 2005, i had to replace the passenger side wheel hub bearing because the bearings inside the hub broke down. Prior to getting it replaced, loud metallic grinding noise was coming from the wheel area. I took the hub bearing apart and found that the bearings were damamged and no sign of grease inside of the hub bearing. Now, on may 5, 2005, i have the same kind of problem and i inspected the hub bearing by taking it apart and discovered the bearings were damage. Within a few weeks of purchasing our vehicle, we brought it back to the dealer due to violent shaking from the front end. We were told we needed 4 brand new tires. Buying new tires did not fix the problem. Within a few days we began to hear a humming, vibrating, and growling noise coming from the front of the vehicle when you hit approximately 40 mph. We brought the vehicle back to the dealer and brought the sales manager for a test drive to hear the noise. When my wife explained that she was scared to drive the vehicle, they assured her that it was not a safety hazard and the vehicle would be fine to drive. The service manager called and said they had to replace the free wheel valve solenoid. We picked up the truck and on our way home the noise returned. We called the service manager and explained that the noise was still there and we were to bring the vehicle in again and take the technician for a test drive in it so he can hear the noise. While on test drive the tech advised her that they had other montero's that made the same noise and when they changed the sensor it went away. Then they said the "torque" converter was bad - they changed it but it didn't fix the problem, then they drained the transmission fluid, didn't fix the problem. Then we were told they might have to replace the entire drive shaft. They never changed the drive shaft but instead replaced the left hub bearing assembly. My wife picked up the vehicle 2 days later and the noise was gone but the engine was "jumping" every time she stopped at a red light. This has happened several times, but we keep getting told that the computer isn't showing any problems. Why has nothing been done about all the roll over cases we keep hearing about? *la

In december 2002 i purchased my car (2001 mitsubishi montero sport xls 4x4) from a local private seller. The car had about 38,000 at the time and was still under the 60,000 mile manufacturers warranty. The seller insisted he did not have the records of the repairs, but did give me a spreadsheet of routine maintenance for the car. After having the car checked by my regular mechanic i bought the car despite the lack of records since it had low mileage and was still under warranty. I then drove the car and performed the routine maintenance. In december 2003 the car reached 60,000 miles and was therefore due for routine maintenance. Due to my low income while attending graduate school i could not afford to get the service done until the car reached 61,000 miles. I opted not to get the service done at the dealer because of cost. The mechanic (carolina import and domestic, 4235 capital blvd., raleigh, nc, 919-872-0350) immediately informed me the car was slipping between gears and the transmission fluid was black- meaning the transmission slipping was causing the fluid to be burned. The mechanic told me the transmission would need to be repaired soon but suggested i change the fluid every 15k in the meantime. After learning this i immediately approached the seller and requested the service records, if any, and he finally relented. The transmission fluid was changed at 38k by leith mitsubishi cary and it was black then too- demonstrating leith mitsubishi ignored the problem while the car was still under warranty. I then contacted leith mitsubishi and they said the fluid should have been changed at 30k instead of 38k which caused the transmission to fail and they would not fix the car. Following this i contacted numerous mechanics and they all agreed that changing the fluid late would not cause the transmission to fail, that the transmission was failing before the fluid needed to be changed. *ak

Defective hydraulic brake booster accumulator (nhtsa id#01v254001) on my 2001 montero caused my brakes to fail while stopping at an intersection which resulted with me rear ending another vehicle! I have 2 complaints. First: i have had the car checked several times by the dealer to locate a very loud noise coming from the front of the car. It has to be in something that has to do with the steering or i guess suspension. I have had the right front hub assembly replaced, new tires and a brake job that i wasn't supposed to have done on the truck and i still have the noise that has been confirmed by the dealership technician. When driving straight, the car has loud hum. When i steer to the right and the weight of the truck shifts to the left, the noise goes away. When i steer to the left and the weight of the truck shifts to the right, the noise gets louder. I haven't noticed anything yet with the steering that might seem dangerous, but i feel very uneasy about the car. I feel like one day i am going to be driving and something will just snap. The main thing is i don't have the money to keep taking the truck to dealerships to investigate what is going on and finding nothing.*jb second, i was wondering if there is a standard for the placement of the brake and gas pedals with respect to the placement of the seat. When i purchased the truck i realized that the seating was kind of wierd but i didn't think anything of it. Now, after having been seen by several dealers. Because of extreme pain in my back, but primarily my hips to the point of considering surgery. They ask if i have been in an accident or fallen or had any trauma and i haven't. Then i realized the pain did not begin until i got this truck and i primarily feel poorly when i am driving and right after i drive. So i really started paying attention to the position my body is in when i am driving and my legs are in a very awkward position in order to reach the pedals. Thus my question: do these types of standards for pedal placement exist and where might i take my truck to have it measured or tested for compliance.*jb

After collision the wheel was at an angle and joint at the right upper control arm was loose at the hub. Also, the right rear wheel rim was broken and the rear tire had become flat. There was no damage to tire to indicate any kind of blow out. Parts that required replacement included right rear hub, right rear axle assembly, right rear shock, right rear wheel and tire, right rear upper control arm and right lower trailing arm. Observation of the damaged hub indicated that the slot that holds the bolt from the upper control arm was distorted into an oval shape. Dt

I'd noticed previously my car would shake as if it was going to fall dead, but wouldn't or there would be a thump like someone had hit me and the car would move slightly. This would only happen when the car was stationary at a light/stop sign or if i was waiting to make a turn. On yesterday, after taking my car in for scheduled maintenance and having that maintenance completed, i left the dealership. On my way home, i was waiting to turn into a parking lot car shook as if it were about to fall dead ,then lunged forward. I called the dealership to alert them and advised them that the incident frightened me. I was told by the service advisor that another woman with the same type of car had reported a similar incident and had to bring her car in and that they had to replace her engine. I was told at this time, they belied it might be the torque converter. I drove the car back to the dealership and was told they would keep the car, and a technician would drive it to see if the same thing occurred. I called today 3/19/01 and was told by gary, that the technician drove the car for 1 hour and nothing happened. Then out of the blue , the same thing i described had occurred. I was told he had a call into the engineering line and they were waiting to hear back. I advised gary i did not want that car back until i was comfortable this would not happen again. He said a tsb had been issued on this situation, but when i checked the website, i was unable to find it. I located only recall info. On the hydraulic brake system. *ak

I was traveling the florida turnpike to orlando from boca raton on vacation. As i approached the orlando toll plaza, i slowed down and eventually came to a stop in order to pay my toll. Before i could even roll my window down to hand the ticket in, my car lunged forward and began shaking as if it was going to stall. At first i thought i had been rear-end because my son was is ten let out a scream. The car lunged forward so far that i had to back up to pay the toll. I proceeded to exit the turnpike, and when i came to a red light at the intersection, the car did the same thing. I was only a mile from the hotel so i drove to the hotel and called the mitsubishi dealership in coconut creek where i purchased the car. They suggested that the car be taken to a mitsubishi dealership in the orlando area to be checked out. The car was towed to a mitsubishi dealership in orlando on orange blossom trail. I contacted this dealership and explained what happened. They kept the car for two (2) days and could not duplicate the problem. They claim that the car was put on the computer and that all these tests were run but nothing showed up. Since they couldn't find anything wrong, i picked up the car and drove it back to boca raton. The car continued to do this periodically so i limited the driving of the vehicle. On july 13, 2002, i was driving the car on the expressway and when i went to exit and came to a stop, i was almost rear-end the vehicle in front of me because the car lunged forward, shook, and felt like it was going to stall out. On monday, july 15, 2002, i took the car to the coconut creek dealership where i purchased it. I explained this problem and my concerns to the service advisor. This advisor, rafael, told me that this problem has been reported by other car owners. He said that the problem only occurrs in 2001 mitsubishi montero sports in florida and that there have been 11 reported cases at this dealership. He said that mitsubishi is aware of thiw

My husband and i purchased a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport 3.5xs june of 2001. It now has 37,000 miles on it and during those 37,000 miles i have had to have the rotors turned twice and have the brakes pads replaced three time since june of 2001. I am not a hard driver nor do i drive recklessly. In my opinion, this is not acceptable for a brand new car. I also know someone who owns a 2001 montero sport es who has also had the same problems. Wondering if there was anything that can be done. Or if this is normal for a mitsubishi product because if it is, i will never purchase another. Thank you for your help. *jb

Our dealer informed us yesterday that both front brake rotors on our vehicle are warped. This has occurred with only 22000 miles on the new vehicle. After investigating further, we've learned that this problem is quite common for the mitsubishi montero. Based on the experience of others, we may very well have to replace both rotors every time we replace the front brake pads. This tendency for abnormal, accelerated wear of the rotors is an obvious safety issue. Excess wear can lengthen stopping distances, making it difficult for drivers to avoid obstacles. Given the frequency with which this problem is occuring (abnormally high rates of rotor warpage), we believe the problem is best explained by either manufacturing defects, or, more likely, a design flaw in the brake/rotor system. Both the dealer and mitsubishi customer service have been contacted and the problem disucssed at length. Neither party is willing to replace the rotor assembly. Rather they simply wish to turn them - an approach which only delays correction of the problem and ensures added customer costs. Please investigate this as we feel it could be a serious safey issue with this particular vehicle.*ak
